Unlock means to disassociate the phone with any specific carrier. Most phones are locked, but - with a bit of web searching - can be unlocked for a small fee.

The iPhone has my Address Book, iCal, notepad, iPhotos, Stocks, Google maps, Weather widget, clock, calculator, Phone, email (all 7 of my accounts), Safari -without Java or Flash- and a video widescreen iPod.

and it works as smoothly as the ads showed. It's just as fluid.

I'm already with AT&T, so I'm okay with the carrier.

I wonder if one can install a suitable PIM. Can you add software, or are you limited to the apps it came with?

In this case it is worth noting that the visual voicemail feature probably wouldn't work with a different carrier.

And Pilate - "unlock"?

I'm using the phone to post right now. I hit wrong keys on most of the words here as I typed, but the phone caught it and corrected of as I hit the space bar. I was curious as to why the space would be the button to accept the correct spelling but it becomes obvious as you type - it's the key you would hit next naturally.

So far I can see some deficiencies but it's still a heck of a replacement for my old phone and 3rd gen iPod and palmpilot.

You can get the 4G for $500, I've got to believe someone will figure out a way to unlock it, and, well the last part I would think would go without saying (You can show your photos on it, that should be the clincher!)

I got to play with one for an hour this evening! It's totally cool, I put it through the paces finding our restaurant, (and warning us of a traffic jam), listening to music, practicing typing, taking pictures, browsing some websites, receiving a call (automatically and wirelessly integrated with the sound and navigation systems in the car)... definitely want!

You didn't mention that the it switches over to wifi when you're in a hot spot for high performance network access.

Um, yes it does, and yes I did.

Wi-Fi ability is cool for at home and in hot spots, but the iPhone's asposeta be a portable, aint it?

I get great speed on the AT&T 3-G HSDPA/UMTS data network using an aircard on a laptop. I just think its odd that iPhone/AT&T uses the lower speed EDGE side of their network when their 3-G system is available.

That's the only reason I suspect a second generation iPhone might be a smart wait, but isnt that just the way of the world?

Will future iPhones be better? Of course! But I still want one now. And I'm guessing lots of others will too.

The first version of the Iphone will not be a 3-G cellular device.
