DOG found 2000km away ... nine years later
    Missing dog

    Missing dog Source: AP

A FLEA-bitten dog rescued from a squalid Melbourne back yard is to be reunited with her overjoyed Brisbane owner - nine years after she disappeared.

And 17-year-old Chloe Rushby, who was only eight when her best mate disappeared, can't wait to have Muffy back in her arms.

Chloe and her family screamed with joy when the RSPCA called to say Muffy was alive - much older, very scruffy and 2000km away in Melbourne.

    Gallery: Amazing animal escapes

"It would be fair to say that they were extremely elated and extremely excited by the call," said RSPCA inspector Gail Coulter, who found an emaciated Muffy after an anonymous tip.

"They were initially shocked and confused, but when we mentioned the name Muffy - which is part of the microchip information - and gave them a description of her, they knew it was their pet lost so many years ago."

What happened in between is largely a mystery.

The fluffy white bitser is known to have been kept in a filthy back yard for the past two years.

The previous seven years of her life are a mystery.

Ms Coulter found Muffy sleeping on a tattered piece of cardboard after a tip-off about animal cruelty.

The skinny mutt with matted fur was suffering severe dermatitis caused by flea allergy.

The last thing Ms Coulter expected was to find was the bag of skin and bones had been microchipped.

She was even more astounded when her original owners were found in Brisbane and were overjoyed to have their old dog back.

"It's an amazing, extraordinary story on several counts," Ms Coulter said. "The fact that someone went to the trouble of calling in her case as one of neglect probably saved her life.

"Then the fact that she was microchipped made us realise she had probably come from a very different home and background to the one we found her in.

"And then, most remarkably, that we were able to track down her original owners, nine years later and even though their contact details recorded on the microchip information were hopelessly out of date."

Muffy will be flown home to Brisbane VIP-style next week to be reunited with the girl who never forgot her.

Mum Natalie Lampard said Chloe, who shared her bed with Muffy for three years, still talked about the missing pooch right up until the RSPCA called. Now Chloe can tell Muffy herself how much she missed her.

Miski is so fine!  At 10 years old now, she looks much younger except for the white on her face.  She runs every day twice a day while hunting rabbits and seems to love it.  She like to try to organize my day when I'm home - the smells from the kitchen must be produced on time!  I feel so lucky that she is in my life.

    it is awful.
pretty rough handling for moving a puppy. two collapsed lungs, a skull fracture, broken ribs and various cuts and bruises and although not mentioned, was probably unconscious or it wouldn't have taken 10 minutes to find him. Puppies don't get those kind of injuries from being moved. Granted, the baby is much larger than a puppy, but still, those are serious injuries. I think the dog thought it more of a play toy than a puppy.

Never never never leave a child alone with a dog, no matter how friendly the dog is. We were playing in the yard the other day with a toddler, and Maggie snapped at him, a very uncommon behavior for her. She was giving him a warning, she didn't break the skin, but you never know. Dogs are unpredictable.

People who keep mixed wolf breeds as pets generally deserve what they get, but here a baby suffered for it.

Dog drags newborn from family home in Ky.

    By JEFFREY McMURRAY
    Associated Press Writer

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — A father was frantically calling 911 to report his missing newborn when he spotted the baby, bleeding from the mouth and clutched in the jaws of a family dog who had carried him from his crib to the heavily wooded backyard.

Four-day-old Alexander James Smith was rushed to the emergency room at University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington, where he was listed in critical condition Tuesday with two collapsed lungs, a skull fracture, broken ribs and various cuts and bruises.

His father, Michael Smith, said doctors were optimistic the boy would survive, but a day earlier they braced the family for the worst and had to use resuscitation paddles to get a heartbeat.

"They took us straight to a consulting room with a pastor and gave us pretty much what was the last visitation," Smith said in an interview with The Associated Press from a hospital waiting room.

Smith said he and his wife, Chrissie, had just put Alexander James (or A.J.) in his crib Monday afternoon in their Nicholasville, Ky., home. Smith said he was preparing to leave for the store to buy various baby items, including a video monitor that he now believes could have prevented the entire ordeal.

"It'll haunt me because that was my job," he said. "It's a nightmare."

When Chrissie returned to the bedroom minutes later after going downstairs to look at the shopping list, one of the doors was ajar and both the baby and their Native American Indian dog - a breed that looks similar to a husky - were gone.

Michael Smith initially headed to the backyard, knowing that Dakota, a mixed breed with wolves in its ancestry, had a reputation for stealing household items like cups and wallets and depositing them there. He spent 10 minutes searching among the trees and bushes in the two-acre fenced yard before finding the dog and child in tall grass some 200 yards behind the house.

He grabbed his son and sprinted toward the house, handing him over to emergency workers who had just arrived.

"When you're running through the backyard and you can't find him, every worst fear comes through your head," Smith said. "We had to try to stay positive, try and find him. My guess is five more minutes and he wouldn't be here."

Jessamine County chief deputy sheriff Allen Peel said no charges had been filed, but the case remains under investigation.

    "It's unreal," Peel said.

Smith, who is the owner of a corporate security business where his wife also works, said the dog was treating the baby as a puppy and wasn't being vicious. Still, he doesn't want her back in the family home.

Dakota was taken into custody by animal control, and although Smith remains hopeful a good home can be found for her, he acknowledges the animal may have to be destroyed.

A call to Jessamine County animal control was not immediately returned.

The 4-year-old dog was one of three - including one from the same litter as Dakota - that the family had owned since they were puppies. None had any history of aggression, even when playing with Smith's two other children from a previous marriage, he said.

"It wasn't a vicious dog attack," Smith said. "She had A.J. for 10 minutes on her own, and if you look at A.J.'s belly, there's about 100 little marks. All the dog had to do was one bite and A.J. wouldn't be here."
