I have a Roku. A buddy has Apple TV. And I have a disc player that streams. By far it is worth the less than $100 to get a dedicated streaming device, either the Roku or ATV. Any disc player I've seen just doesn't have the versatility and quality the stand alones do. |

This is the cable that runs from an iPad to an HDMI cable. I just airplay to apple tv fom the iPad so I am cable free at that end. I still can't figure out how to get everything I want to airplay tho. |

I centered my home theater setup around my HP laptop, the latter providing many other roles due to its portability. I stream everything though it: RP, Amazon, Netflix, PBS, The Masters, America's Cup....whatever. We haven't had a cable TV subscription in over ten years.
We used to subscribe to both the DVD and streaming services at Netflix and loved it. Netflix had a ton of great documentaries, music concerts and other stuff for streaming, with the DVDs providing our thirst for first-flight movies. Alas, the pricing debacle they inflicted upon themselves last year changed all that; I was one of those who cancelled everything in protest. We now subscribe under my wife's name to the streaming service only.
Alas, since Netflix lost their contract with Starz, so went the bulk of their programming that was worth watching. 98% of what's left is just not of interest, and I'm not about to pay more every month for their DVD service. The thrill is gone. That said, there are some things we've found, such as the TV series Drop Dead Diva, that are well-written and keep us amused. But I'm on the verge on cancelling if we can't find more value from the monthly subscription fee.
Meanwhile, I picked up an Amazon Prime membership since I buy so much stuff through them anyway. It's been very worthwhile, and with an AMZ charge card (through Chase), dealing with them is easy. Their customer service has been first-rate, and unlike Netflix they know that the customer is king (remember those days). I even accumulate reward points that I've used for several "free" purchases.
Anyway, along with the Prime membership comes all sorts of free streaming video, a lot of it to our liking. And when compared to movie theater prices, paying $4 or so for a recent first-run film is OK in my book, especially when I can get up in the middle of it and get another glass of wine to consume while viewing. (I didn't have to pay for gas and dinner out, either.)
PBS offers a lot of free streaming; that's how we were watching each episode of Downton Abbey one night after each Sunday evening premiere. We've also really enjoyed Doc Martin and are looking forward to watching the next season (currently in production). |

We have a Roku which is fine and cheap. But it's kind of a dumb box too. I think when it dies we'll finally get a game console; I think they all stream netflix and some of them replace your DVD player, streaming music too. |

It connects to my netflix account and my amazon prime. There are a lot of free movie channels which show mostly old classics form the public domain. You will get a few decent movies and old tv series without paying for any channels - I'd say it's well worth the price of a roku of that's all you're going to watch. I don't use any of the pay roku channels. I got my device from a groupon deal for about 30 bucks. You can get the previous generation of roku devices really cheap and they work just as well. It works as advertised and I've not had any real problems with it apart form a couple freezes.

We had the DVD's by mail and liked it just fine when we were in Richmond, but now that we live in backwater, Alaska I doubt the shipping would be fast enough to make the turnaround times reasonable.
Had it and it was OK but almost every time a movie came to mind that I'd be interested in, they didn't have it on instant. I ended up canceling due to that and trying to save money and was thinking about giving it another try but if their selection has indeed gotten worse since then, not sure I will. |
