I've got a rain barrel, and have had one since shortly after buying the house. I love being able to collect that water, but it does have to rain first! If you get one (or make one) be sure it has good, brass hardware! Plastic doesn't last. |

Things you've learned?
I've done some online gathering of info, and so I'm looking at practical implementation.
We rent but our landlord went overboard on this. Installed a 1000 litre cistern and pump and uses the rainwater for the garden tap and to flush the toilets in the house... correction.. used the rainwater. After ten years of hassle with the pump they got the plumber to reconnect to the water mains.
Economically it was heavily in the red. There is no way the water saved in any way justified the expense of buying, installing and fixing the hardware.
So, if you go this road, keep it simple. I'd use a reliable mobile pump that you can keep an eye on yourself as that is the weak point in the system. If that works, the system is fine. This summer I've simply collected rainwater run-off in a tub and that has been enough to water our planters.
Ideally, some kind of automatic watering system would also be a good investment. Our plants never look so good as when we are not there to look after them Seriously, the regular water from the system seems to be what they thrive on, as opposed to our erratic forget some days approach. I remove the system when we get home because it's such an eyesore, but if you could hide it I am sure you'd be really happy with the results.

My 1890 house has all the gutters routed through clay pipes to a brick lines cistern that used to supply all the household water. Not all the gutters are still actually hooked to it but it still fills up and is great for watering the garden. Perhaps you could use your house gutters to fill a fiberglass tank? A friend of mine does exactly that to water his garden... Dave
