I'll admit I use photoshop. Unfortunately I haven't used iPhoto enough to give any pointers. I'll say that it took me a long time to have the guts to make my images dark, and I had to ignore those who said they were too dark and just do what felt right for me. I think I'm done fighting that battle, but I'm forever in doubt as to whether anything I'm doing is worthwhile. Um, what I mean is, the process is worthwhile for me, and that's what matters most. But I don't offer up my work much for serious critiquing.

As someone who enjoys landscape photography in the northwest and gravitates toward black and white images, when asked whose work I admire, the easy answer is Ansel Adams. In fact I was fortunate enough to place well in a contest in his honor a few years ago, and had my print on display at the Ansel Adams Masterworks exhibit in Portland Oregon for a period of time. That was very cool.

It's hard to imagine that Carleton Watkins was shooting in Yosemite some 60 years before Adams. He lugged his Mammoth Camera and a stack of large glass plates around Yosemite, and among other places, The Columbia River Gorge. His work is outstanding. Viewing it online doesn't do it justice, but here and here and here are a few links to some examples anyway.

I was fortunate enough to have a print of mine place high in a contest in honor of the "Wild Beauty" exhibition, and received a copy of the book "Wild Beauty: Photographs of the Columbia River Gorge, 1867–1957." It's a beautiful book containing several photographs by Watkins, as well as other great photographers who spent time in The Gorge.

Watkins died when Adams was a teenager. The timeline just blows me away.
