Mainly by boarding their vessels, murdering the crew and bringing the boat back to Dartmouth. Funnily enough, the local church, St Saviours, is known as the vintners church - there are bunches af grapes prominently carved in the rood screen - and a lot of the town's prosperity came from the wine trade, mainly from Bordeaux, until a regretable, and apparently short-lived contretemps that became the "100 Years War", although with hindsight I bet they wished they came up with something a little snappier. So from then on, it was Port wine only in England, causing a massive increase in the incidence of gout amongst the Upper Classes (one takes one's pleasure and class warfare where one can) and the lifelong affection of Scottish wine drinkers for French wine, and Claret in particular. This is because the Catholic French would not and could not supply the Protestant English, but would happily supply the then Catholic Scots. History does not recall if the grateful Scots reciprocated by sending south great amounts of haggis. Or if they did, the recipients were too polite to say. I envy you for living in a place that actually has a long and rich history. Out here if something goes back fifty years it's practically ancient. |

Let's don't talk about those. It draws the attention of some less than ideal participants, and before long we're all listening to jabber about feet and God knows what else.

Ovals. Hundreds of laps. Apparently we like to know who has mastered the high-speed ninety-degree left turn. (Sharper turns and right turns are for sissies, Frenchmen, and bankers.) |
