The Mormon religion couldn't be more White Male. They are mostly very wealthy people. And very conservative and patriarchal.
Religion is story, and living in story is no virtue.
And yet we all know what religious persuasion you are.
Mormons come in as many shapes, flavors and genders as most other religions. They have their share of quacks as most other religions and groupings of atheists as well. They also have many fine upstanding people. To treat them all as one because of their affiliation is bigotry. |

Romney's failings had nothing to do with his religion. You might say the way that he approached his religious life was one of the virtuous things about him. His problem IMO was his lack of compassion for the poor, working class or at least the complete ignorance of it having lived an entire life of pure capitalistic priviledge. Romney was no idealogue unless you consider his worship of money at all cost an idealogy which I suppose you could argue. As a matter of fact, his lack of idealogy is what the Evangelicals that rule the Republican party did NOT like about him therefore he had to pretend he cared about their concerns when he clearly did not, ala Reagan.

You can be supremely virtuous and be severely out of touch with the common man. Even if they had let "Mitt be Mitt", that fact by itself would probably still have been his undoing in a close, hard fought campaign.

People willing to play at that level all have suspect motives. But they also have noble intents. No one wanting to go through all of the hassle and heartache to make a presidential bid wants to do harm to this country. The things said about Romney and the fear fostered were way out of proportion to the reality.
That means also that the things said about Obama and the fear fostered on that side were equally false. Obama is no more going to give the government over to the socialists than Romney was going to give it to the corpratists. The big scandals you dug up for Obama were his birth certificate and the church he went to. You fell hook, line and sinker for the same crap that you are accusing the other side of. They even got you to come out and work for them, despite the fact that you stated you didn't really even like him as a candidate. The last four years haven't seen us given over to the socialists, property hasn't been seized, taxes haven't been raised to support hordes of lazy welfare queens, guns are still for sale and the only bullet shortages have been because the supply couldn't keep up with demand (I'd say Democratic presidencies have been very good for the armory business).
We've had a weak recovery following a very bad recession, and we'll continue to see growth, not because everything that Washington does is good or bad, because Americans get up every day and go out and do. Tax, regulation, foreign and social policies all play a part in how things work. And both parties have some differing thoughts on what works best. But neither is completely right, and neither wants to do anything to hold back the country. There intents are noble, and whether or not they help us, we will get up and go forth and do work.
The powers that be will try to hold their positions by whatever means necessary. It is up to us to demand better from our representatives. If we fall victim to the fear mongering on either side, then this cycle will continue. America will go forward regardless. What we get out of it as citizens is up to us.
Well said. |

The problem with the Republicans changing their message is that, because they are ideologues, they can't change their message. It's like the Catholic Church changing their message. It's completely against their grain to believe in anything other than what they believe in. Even the younguns like Josh Mandel (son of a high school classmate of mine) is far right and would have to move to the center to be viable. |

I've been there for a while, actually. Why I went with Romney is old news.
I'm not going deep now as I'm headed out the door shortly.
There is only one mainstream person left that I will be paying attention to in the coming years and that is Rand Paul. |
