He surprised me with his chops when he was featured during the beginning of Tom Dowd & the Language of Music (<== really interesting DVD). I was also surprised by his performance on one of Clapton's Crossroads DVDs... probably the 2004 concert in TX. You're absolutely right, though, in that he hasn't really done much since his one monster hit years and years ago.

EDIT: OK... enough about Mayer. Back to your regularly-scheduled thread.

he definitely has some serious talent on the guitar. i remember the crossroads thing...but his song writing and breathy singing bugs me.

I wonder what John Mayer did @Apple to cause SJ to remark that "He's out of control." I know John was quoted on the 'Net yesterday (at least that's when I saw it) that he just LOVES to fork his gal. I also know that he's a BIG proponent of slammin' the ole ham. Is THAT what SJ was referring to... that John is a fiend?

Very interesting story. I liked when he asked the biographer how can somebody so smart do something so stupid like letting his cancer metasticize for 9 months? Mind-boggling.  I guess he thought he could cure it with pure organic fruits and veggies and herbs. He reverted to his hippie days.

Then how he lived such a relatively simple life living on a regular suburban street claiming how he saw his Apple friends lives ruined by becoming suddenly rich and promising himself not to fall into that trap.

In fact my sister lives a couple blocks down the street from him in Palo Alto CA..

She wrote me this a few days after he died.

"This is a sad time, to be sure. After he announced his retirement as Apple's CEO in August, I knew he must not have much longer to live. So, on my late-night walks, I began to keep a vigil of sorts for him by passing his house and offering up my thoughts and wishes for his well-being. It was on the second or so night that I began to realize that he was being watched over by men in a big SUV. One night, they were standing outside the car, so, of course, I engaged them in conversation and learned that yes, indeed, they were surveilling "the area" (as they put it — they never mentioned his name) around the clock, and that I shouldn't worry, because everything was all right. There was another such SUV post at the other end of the block; so, our friends who live in that immediate area said they'd never felt more safe! All this happened the day after he announced his retirement.

The bodyguards are gone now, but there are barricades set up on the street, and even on the sidewalk; but I walked over there at 1 a.m. on Friday night, and there is the most massive and poignant floral and graphic and written-note and pictorial display you can imagine. His house is on the corner, and the dsplays flow out from the corner, down both sides of the fence that border both front sides of his property. It's very, very beautiful and touching! One of my favorite graphics left there reads simply "iSad." Lovely, and yes, sad. He was an icon, the likes of which we may not see again in our lifetimes. But, for all his fame and wealth, he lived simply and very much like the average man. RIP, Steve."

I recorded it and will probably watch it tonight.

Nice words from your sister. Thanks for sharing.
