I believe Quebec is as much a part of Canada as Texas is an essential part of the US. Yeah, much of the territory is populated with loudmouthed fringe. Yeah we'd like to disown them about 25%of the time, and they would like to disown the rest of us about 50% of the time. But just like our most difficult family members sometimes help define the family, so too do these difficult states help define us as countries. |

You speak truth, friend. Nicely stated. Wish you well with your lady. There's NOTHING like the whispers of romance in one's ear - from a woman speaking French. Yyyyiiikkkess! |

Or Facialbook. Cheers. I was recently in Quebec. it was beautiful! Rolling low mountains, deep forests, green meadows, quaint villages set amid valleys. Nice, really nice. Of course, Quebec isn't Canada... not really. You know, 'jade', you're not far off. Funny stuff. But I've lived here on Planet Earth 56 years. Mostly in Canada. I've never quite figured out how we Ontarians are to "treat" Quebecers in this country. I mean, they have a substantial voice in government, 50+ seats in a 300-seat parliament. They tend to hold the balance of power when the #$%^ hits the fan. AND, they want to be a separate NATION. What a screwed-up country we are. My brother-in-law lives in Quebec now, having met a young lady on the "other side". He commutes to work in Ottawa. We've visited a couple of times. As soon as you pass the Quebec sign, it's so odd. Obviously, the French language dominates. As does the way of life for Quebecers. Can't explain it. They do speak English, most of them; just choose not to! Funny. My wife's French, bilingual. She finds it funny as well. Quebec = Canada? Not so much. Not in their eyes, for the most part. You are right about the language thing... I am a first-language English speaker. My French is non-existent. So I had a local as a translator for my work (ever been in a sweat lodge where everything was translated? Whew!). Few participants spoke English, I was led to understand. Now, me, I am a quick study, so I picked up some workable French in a matter of hours - days. During one of the rounds I asked my Quebecua fire tender: "Je voudrais sept grands-pères, s'il vous plaît" he looked at me with eyes wide in surprise. There were gasps and chuckles in the lodge. Lo and behold, all of a sudden 3/4 of the group understood and spoke English after that! It is, as I find often, that when we make a sincere attempt to meet another culture on their doorstep that they open the door and invite us in.
Must be something about those Quebec women... I met a wonderful Woman while there and we are now exploring our relationship with each other.
