Having been to the Police three times in the 80s, I was anticipating goose bumps all over seeing them again.
It didn't happen though. It was a very enjoyable concert, however, and it wasfun to see them have fun as well.
Plusses: the sound was much better than expected (the Arena is normally terrible).
A beautiful "wrapped around your finger" and " walking on the moon"
The concert lasted 2 hrs!
Stewart Copeland!
Stings voice was still intact!
Minusses: A kind of rounder, slower version of " next to you". Worse remakes of "voices inside my head" and " when the world"...
A sometimes noodling Andy Summers.
Fun concert, I would say a 7.5 on a scale of 1 to 10.

I told the girls during VM to get the hell out--they were pirating the seats next to us anyway. Arnie can tell ya...he watched me do it.

I guess I've missed this forum on the RAF before. When I saw it today, I thought, "Whoa, maybe snappy answers for when a cop stops you?"
Wrong again, Pyro. Can't buy an Irish couple, and no snappy answers to cops trying to make quota.

Yes. I said, "I know that these aren't really your seats, which is fine if you're not making noise. But if you want to talk, please go somewhere else." So they left.
I'm pretty sure they were all coked up, too. Why the f*ck did they even come if they just wanted to talk and laugh the whole time??? |

Yep. Historically. But it looks like they are going to luck out with nothing but sunshine these last days and temps during the day tomorrow of 30C. By show time, it will probably still be 23C or so. With a chance for maybe some showers too. And that should translate into another kind of light show.
Might be fun. Might not.
C'mon, 'beaker, you're loaded. Grab a seat on the sunny side and enjoy the show. They'll be running on all cylinders by then. |

Well at least he's honest and not making excuses.
I've seen some of the best bands you can think of, in terms of musicianship, have bad gigs. They're human just like the rest of us.
When Yes played Atlanta on "The Ladder" tour the club they played (The Tabernacle) has a main hall and a smaller basment club. The venue's genius of a booking agent had some industrail death metal type band in the basment room the same night as the Yes show. The bleed from downstairs was so loud that the band couldn't hearthemselves through the monitors. Everytime the monitor engineer tried to give anybody enough volume to hear what they were doing it would be so hot that it would feed back - cut your frakin head off type feedback.
It was a strange mood onstage. The guys went from 'here we are' to 'why can't I hear anything' to fuming mad 'I CAN'T HEAR ANYTHING DAMMIT!!' to 'screw it, let's just play and we get what we get.' There were several points where Squire started singing god knows what (not the proper lyrics obviously) and he and the monitor engineer were throwing things at each other. Not viciously, mind you, They just took on this attitude of 'what the hell, it's not like we're going to be able to make this any better...

Thanks for this excellent review! I'm still undecided ... though tix in all prices are still available. Hmmmm.
Of course, an outdoor football stadium also isn't my favorite idea of a prime musical venue.
Little early in the year for Commonwealth, isn't it?

Not gonna go. Not at these prices. Now if I had some uber-cheap ducats, I'd consider it.
Anyone in Vangroovy take the show in and have a report on the sound quality? Phin? Welly?
The vid clips I caught on the news showed a rather uninspired Sting unable to deliver the passion of days gone by.
I saw highlights on TV afterwards, and was also uninspired by them. They didn't do the concert justice at all.
I was there on the Monday show and enjoyed it thoroughly. The sound was clear and not too loud as to be distorted, but Andy's guitar was overshadowed or washed-out at times. I found myself straining to hear it - could be i'm just getting old and losing the high frequencies in my hearing ;-)
As with any stadium concert, where you sit will make a difference. GM place is generally good as long as you're not in the "nose-bleeds" and tucked under the corporate boxes where the sound gets deadened.
The passion was there. Copeland on percussion was extraordinary; providing full, complex, rhythmic percussion on tunes such as King of Pain and Walking in Your Footsteps. Sting's vocals were fantastic. He would have some people guessing when he didn't hit the high notes when expected but then hit them easily at other points in the song when they weren't expected.
The versions of the songs they did left some people wanting if they weren't familiar with their overall style, but if you've seen them in concert before, then their extended reggae grooves and melodic interludes are not only expected but relished. To a fan, (can you guess I am one?) these moments showed off their musicianship.
They slowed some songs down such as Don't Stand So Close To Me, which was closer to the '84 version (not my preference)than the original, yet stepped up and belted out the punkier tunes such as Can't Stand Losing You and Next To You.
I'd go again. |
