Great review, Alexandra! It was one of the best shows I've seen in a long time!
They played an amazing set that lasted about 3-1/2 hours, and we still wanted more!
Here's the set list: I wasn't sure of every title...
Flags of Freedom Flashing
Carry On
Wooden Ships
Military Madness
After the Garden
Living With War
Don't Need No More Lies
Shock and Awe
Very bluesy Stephen Stills song - "Wounded World"???
Almost Cut My Hair
Immigration Man
Neil Young Song for Iraq Vets -
DejaVu
Second half:
Helplessly Hoping
Our House
Only Love Can Break Your Heart
Guinevere
Treetop Flyer
Old Hippie Highway
Southbound Train goin down
A song from Neil and Stills - Trouble???
Carry me above the World...?
Teach Your Children
Southern Cross
Find the Cost of Freedom
Lets Impeach the President
For What it's Worth
Please Come to Chicago
Ohio
Rockin' in the Free World

They did a carefully chosen mix of old classics interspersed between many of Neil Young's latest songs off of his war album.
This tour isn't about the fluffy love. They have anti-war cry message that they're wanting to amplify, and it seemed to be very therpeautic for them, as well as like-minded fans. It was very affective to begin with the cover Flags of Freedom Flying, while various nation's flags kept switching on the backdrop behind them.
They threw in a lot of their old political songs such as Please Come To Chicago, Ohio, and BS's For What It's Worth.
There were very heartfelt and poignant moments in which they showed heartbreaking casualty footage from the Gulf War--especially as a backgrop to Find the Cost of Freedom.
Other moments, Neil did his hunched-over, bobbing, eyes shut, transported to another place emoting as he sung don't need no more lies.....(from a song on his current CD)
(I just have to take a moment here to say.....Neil absolutely f-ing RAWKS live)
I was very happy to hear Our House, Carry On, Helplessly Hoping, and Teach Your Children--the songs I used to sing in 3 part harmony with my sisters growing up.
Musically, they seemed like they'd never left one another's side for the last 20 years...harmonies were solid and tight, they grinded away on their guitars and even MOVED together in perfect harmony.
Each of them got to showcase their own solo efforts, sometimes backed up by other members of the group...and sometimes they did old and new duets.
We were surprised that they did no encore, but their ending song (Neil's Rocking In the Free World) was so completely kickass, searing and powerful (I'm suprised the bowl is still standing) that there really wasn't any way to follow it up. They wanted to leave on a high note.
This show was an expensive one, but worth EVERY penny.
My apologies to all the people I tried to call from the show on songs I thought you would love....cell reception was sketchy inside the Bowl...
Sounds like an awesome time - thanks for sharing a little of it! |

CSNY is a great group. But I know something personal about Neil and I just can't like him anymore. Some of his songs are good , but I would throw free tickets to see him in the trash. |

No but you wouldn't feel like you were getting ripped off. With a group like CSN(&Y) the vocals are such an important part of the music, and in an arena environment that is the first thing to suffer. Last time I saw CSN in an arena I was sitting about 30 feet from the sound man, which would be about as good as it gets soundwise, and it sucked. Instruments were ok, vocals were not. Nothing like the big echo off the roof and upper seating bowl too... |

Youch! Last year when I saw CSN, in a relatively small concert hall the big dollar tickets were somewhere around $85. Time before that was floor seats in an arena, but I didn't buy the tickets so I don't know how much they were. |
