Nothing but a cheap sell. Or maybe it proves that going to foreign lands & murdering brown skinned people in their own countries is a noble act to be honored by good Americans ?
Noted with great interest is that the highest ranking of all these musicians you mention & who was honorably discharged after years of exemplary service did not get a mentioned. Now I wonder why . . . ?

Mostly, I agree with this. However, I think that collectively, sometimes a tendency toward elitism pushes us to think that anyone involved in the military is somehow duped into doing what they do. Two of the absolute brightest minds I have ever known chose to commit themselves to that life. I can assure you that neither went into it lightly. They both fought knowing the pitfalls and the potential for shadiness. One didn't survive, and one hasn't been able to communicate with his old circle of friends for over 20 years. Any way you look at it, that's rough. I respect that level of dedication...period.

We sell our souls for the vague promise that we might someday feed at their trough. The brightest minds who sink as low as any human being can.

It's not just those who fight, it's whole societies that are duped - it takes a whole society to go to war. Those who fight simply make the ultimate sacrifice. If I implied otherwise, I apologize.
I am so torn about this day. I really don't know how to feel about it. While I respect the sacrifice made by so many in good faith, I hate the lies they are told to convince them that such sacrifice is required. While I appreciate the service, I abhor the deception. All my life I've been sickly fascinated with the mechanics of warfare but repelled by the motivation.
For those who have made what in their own hearts was a sincere sacrifice I have infinite respect. For those who create the circumstances I have eternal hatred.

Let us remember all of the warriors who put their lives on the line regardless of the reasons and the politics. Memorial day has NOTHING TO DO WITH POLITICS. We thank you for putting your selves in places and circumstances that no one should be put in.
Memorial Day has everything to do with politics & prettying up the "nobility" of war to guarantee a steady stream of human sacrifices for Corporate bottom line. Me, I want nasty. I want to see the flag draped coffins paraded on the nightly news, every single night, until the duped masses begin to get it.

Good luck with that.
Honoring the soldiers without acknowledging what war really is, and how many civilians have died as well, is like the big red white and blue elephant in the room.
How can we not look at the men and the women who died in Iraq and Afghanistan without admitting that they died because the Bush Admin got greedy.

It is better to be violent, if thereis violence in our hearts, than to put on the cloak of nonviolence to cover impotence.
If we were to follow that advice our streets would be even more over run with random acts of violence. It is by our willingness to recognize the violence within our hearts, and to choose peaceful resolve, that we can work together cooperatively to build a society with a greater peace.
