The most realistic depiction of the post-nuclear apocalypse. Unfortunately, it's right in your neighborhood and the victims are your friends and family.

One of the most emotionally powerful movies I've ever seen. Not a good date movie, however.

Unrelentingly dark and depressing. It's main point (nuclear war would be really, really bad) is made in the first half hour. It keeps going, keeps hitting you over the head with this (fairly obvious) theme. After a while it just feels like audience abuse.

That said, it's been 23 years since I saw it and I still have scenes from it etched in my memory.

This is San Francisco. We have lost our New York signal. Radar sources confirm the explosion of nuclear devices there, in New York, and up and down the East Coast. Ladies and gentlemen, this is real. This is...

Atmospherics aside, I think Blade Runner is pretty overrated. I just don't see the colossal appeal.

Some of my favorites, in no particular order:

Star Wars (the original)
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
The Matrix
Dark City

I love Dark City... it's too bad it didn't get more attention.

I also liked the re-make of Solaris with George Clooney in it... rather decent job.

The actual title of the article (published by the Gardian Our expert panel votes for the top 10 sci-fi films.

When I worked for a large university I moved through some decidedly werid circles - one commonality between the physicists, financiers, human resource directors, communications, materiel services, risk management, care flight, and various other personnel and job descriptions who I ran across was - yep, speculative fictuin (I really don't like the workd "SciFi" - it sound cheesy, like a pulp reading for kids.)

So, when I started looking for comments by Dr. Stephen Hawking (who is a great fan of speculative fiction), and Dr. Robert Foreward (now deceased NASA physicist), or some of the other passionate scientists, I was appalled when I found how unscientific the writers at the British publication were, sketchy even, in providing any "scientific" information - top scientists, indeed!

Who is this expert panel that slaves for the Guardian, my science professors always demanded that I be meticulous in identifying the hypoetheses, elements, processes, and conclusions of an experiment.

All I see here is a list of (mostly) cool movies with a claim of SCIENTIST SUPPORTED on them. Bad Guardian, !

If you haven't checked out Firefly yet then I urge - no, I BEG - you to do so. It is an absolute travesty what Fox did to this show but almost worth it for all the goodies you get in the DVD set.

They did almost the same thing to Futurama. It's amazng that they're still in business if this is how they treat some of their best programming. Then again, I'm not sure that the "When the World's Best Police Chases by Attacking Animals Goes Wrong 8" audience is realy the market for quality sci-fi fare.
