That would have been 1988-89 when I was a regular.
 
That cheesesteak shop does it my way. I've been to the one in Berkeley a time or two. There's one in the City on Columbus I think that a co-worker took me to ca 1983. He's a Philly native and vouched for those being the real deal. Cheeze Whiz and everything

So a soft sourdough roll is a decent substitute?  Geri has been at me to make her a "real" cheesesteak but I think I'll cheat and take her to the local cheesesteak "cheat" shop where a guy wid a Philly Accent makes fake cheesesteaks...

(BTW:  If Red's cheeseburger/beer combo was $2.45 last time you was out here... you musta been out here about the same time I went to SFSU!  )

I use london broil. I cook it very rare and then let it cool and chop it up in the food processor. I caramelize onions and then throw the really rare meat in to the pan after the onions are caramelized almost to the point of being burnt.I use any kind of sharp cheese. Tonight I will use a gruyere' and sharp cheddar combo. I put the cheese in a few minutes before I think it will be done and mix it all up. I put it in the bun and then bake it in the oven on high heat for a few minutes. I like squishy buns.

Might not be proper, just like Sean's , but the best cheesesteaks are on those hunks of sourdough like what Red uses for his burgers and devil dogs. Hmm. Looks like Red doesn't use that for dogs anymore. And a double cheeseburger/beer combo was $2.45 last time I was there.

Ha! The most popular places are apparently the worst here. I have never been but I like driving past at night.
