This reminds me of the idea that if you wake up and say to yourself, "Today is a great day, it is (will be)". Or another example, "smiling is contagious". Those kind of ideas.

This made me recall a couple of books I read many years ago by David J. Scwartz, PhD, called The Magic of Thinking Big and The Magic of Self Direction. The first book deals with job/career issues as well as relationships in general. The second book continues on where the first left off focussing on affecting how others treat you. Both are good books and I would recommend reading them with an open mind. Not a bunch of huey, rather good ideas that seem logical and are backed up with real world examples.

For the thin-skinned, Schwartz is a Christian and spirituality is a part of his writings. I am not, but did not find his refernces to Christianity offensive. I just substituted aspects of my beliefs which were related to whatever he was trying to convey.

I will check them out. I also recommend to those of you out there something I was introduced to after I started on this particular train of thoughtwith a freind of mine. It is called "The Power of Intention" by Dr. Wayne Dyer. I am starting to listen to the recording of it. It is like you describe about the other books. It seems to be based in logic and reasoning and not some "new age mysticism". Well, so far, anyway. :)

The saddest words of tongue or pen are these ,"it might have been".

John Greenleaf Whittier, I believe. "For all sad words of tongue or pen, the saddest are those, 'it might have been.'"

BluEyes, Eliot was quite the advocate--anbd exemplar--of the kind of thinking embodied in the quote you used with your students--a kind of thinking that includes basic charity, I believe. "What do we live for," she (also) wrote, "if not to make the world less difficult for each other?"

There is an idea that I know of which is similar to this concept. It is called by many different names. Anyway, the basic nature of this concept is that, as in science, all things are composed of energy. This is energy that can have many different forms. For example, our moods and beliefs can affect the type and alignment of the energy of our body. As a result, how we react and respond to others and the world can be affected. It is, in essence, like the ideas of magnetics and electrical interaction.
So, by aligning ourselves with a positve(good) concept or action, we affect positve change in our energy patterns. And since like attracts like(at least in this case), we will attract positive energy people to us. Also, it feels to good to have our energy be positve.

This is the basics as best I can explain them. I feel that is more instinctual than intellectual, though.

I suspect that this idea --in one form or another -- can be found in many belief systems: Buddhism, Christianity, etc... even Secular Humanism.

There have been times when I didn't like what I saw when I turned my eye towards a mirror. I'm not talking appearances here; I'm thinking more along the lines of characteristics and habbits. Things that deep down I wanted to abolish or change. Usually these would be things that I found excruciatingly difficult to act upon.

When faced with this situation, I had somewhere learned that instead of acting immediately to fix what you didn't like, do something nice for another person! The idea being that in order to feel worthy of rewarding yourself with some form of personal growth, you needed to do something for someone who was in some need of assistance first. Not neccessarily aiding them in their changes, but any help at all. For example, the last time I did this, I took some yard waste to the landfill for a co-worker, who was physically unable to do it himself. Maybe this is a nudge to encourage a little dose of good karma? Some form of sacrafice?

Anyway, I have used this from time to time throughout my life. I learned that the good feelings derived from helping another make you feel better about yourself and somehow make it easier to facilitate your own changes. Kind of a selfish act of charity, I guess. Unfortunately, I really don't know the source of this philosophy. It did not specifically come from my parents, but I believe it was something I got from Sioux teachings. Haven't been able to verify this, though.

So...I am really interested in the true source of this train of thought. I am hoping that one of you might have been taught this way of thinking and know it's origin. If not, I think it would be interesting and even helpful to other RP'ers to hear others' ideas and strategies on successfully achieving positive change in one's self.
