Sure!

Only because I'm extra cautious, I like to repair permissions between software installs as well. YMMV.

Only thing I've installed so far is Opera, guess I could do that now.

It sounds like a success!

Using Opera here too. It's a bit clunky at times at RP.

Come to think of it, the command was "erase."

Anyway, I'm back in business with the new hard drive. Boot up time went from 1 minute, 27 seconds to 33 seconds and it's running mighty snappily. Trying out Opera for a browser.

That was super fast for zeroing a hard drive. Maybe it was just an erase? Probably okay either way. Zeroing is just one more of my (likely unnecessary) conservative precautionary steps.

Since it doesn't sound like you're going to clone the old operating system, this is what I would do.

Install the new drive in the laptop. Move the old drive to the enclosure.

Boot from the installer DVD.

Trying to remember how this goes.......

You need to decline the installation and (from the file menu, I think) open the disk utility and zero the hard drive. This may take up to an hour or two.

Once the drive is zeroed, run the installer.

Reboot from your new operating system and run software update. I'm a little anal about this and like to do updates in increments, while running permissions repair from the disk utility between updates, and occasionally rebooting.

Once you're all updated we can discuss the next part of your plan.

Hopefully I'll see you in a few hours. Thanks!

Partition usually means to create more than one partition. When you do this the drive looks like more than one drive (one, two, or three or more) to the operating system. Each partition behaves like a separate drive. Do you want to do this? Or do you want to zero (erase/format) the drive.

I always partition my drives and move my home folder and data/pic folders to the extra partition. This way if I have to reinstall the OS my personal stuff is already there in the other other partition (Unless of course the hard drive itself dies). This is a carryover from my UNIX days.

I understand that new drive must be partitioned before installation of the OS.

I'm assuming from buzz's reaction I have it all wrong.

don't assume. i just needed to find a new RPeep to laugh at, ya know*. i picked you.
