For some reason TCM is showing Laurel and Hardy films with Spanish dialogue. They are not dubbed but were actually filmed with L&H speaking thier lines in Spanish. Strange.

Oh and for the non-Spanish speakers there are subtitles.

Yea I have seen some of those; I watch them for awhile to practice my Spanish!{#Lol}

My personal take: I'm no fan of musicals. If I've got to watch one, West Side Story it will be.

The Apartment had me laughing, crying, and on the edge of my seat. WSS was good, but IMO the dancing/singing are just filler.

IMO the dancing/singing are the point of a musical and the dialog is just filler. not being argumentative, just sayin.

i can understand not liking musicals.  there are several genres of which i am not a fan.

Last night they were pouring it on with Oscar caliber movies that were really good. The Apartment with Jack Lemmon and Shirley Maclaine, followed by West Side Story.

Interestingly, both get a 93% rating from the critics, and The Apartment gets the same rating from viewers (35K worth) while West Side Story gets only an 82% rating from viewers (150K worth).  My question is, how can someone not appreciate the quality of either of these?  What's wrong with these 7 percenters?  And how can one in five people not like West Side Story?

I did not realize it when I posted the above that this past Friday was the 100th anniversary of Danny Kaye's birth.

Currently watching the Dick Cavett interview with Kaye that was done in1971. DK was a fascinating man and according to him did most of his stunts without a double.

My mother was totally in love with DK and was very disappointed to find out he was gay.

To me, James Mason's character comes across more as "pathetic" and duped than "unlikable" in that film, which is essentially the way the character is in the book.  Apparently, Kubrick asked Laurence Olivier and David Niven to play the part, but they refused because of the controversy surrounding the film.

Yes, that is the best word in spades. And the reason I so loathed him is not for his lust for the beautiful young girl, that is natural. No because he was so weak to succumb to the lust and yes pathetic in what he was willing to do to be with her. In short he was a shameless weenie.
