A fish story

Posted by bokey - Mar 30, 2009 - 12:06pm
So you're out there in the morning. The sun is just starting to peek over the edge of the mountain to your east.

There's a little pool near the river bank  where the water is really still. There's a line of rocks that run at maybe a 20 degree angle, actually angling into it while you're angling.

It was probably built by Indians hundreds of years ago as a fish trap.

As you contemplate that, you suck it up, dispel with the poetry and get back to the mission - to catch the evil fish by being smarter.

There are little foggy smoke like incantations dancing above the water. No doubt they are mere minions of the bass that lie beneath, clearly on a mission to distract you from your purpose.

You cast your topwater lure into the almost calm pool.

Nothing.Hmm.Clearly the light refraction of the rising sun has made the sneaky little bastids go over there, under that log.

You cast again, just about 2 inches under the overhang of the log. Wait....Wait. Now just twitch that sucker  enough to make the evil fish think about it.

 wait..................... and BAM!!!!!!!

Then a few minutes later you and that evil fish have an eye to eye confrontation.

The fish knows he is defeated, why prolong his suffering?

Yep, back into the water you go, you evil fish bastid. And if we ever meet again- I'll be using 6 pound test line.

From ancient times wise people and sages have often lived near water. When they live near water they catch fish, catch human beings, and catch the way...

Furthermore, there is catching the self, catching catching, being caught by catching, and being caught by the way.

- Eihei Dogen, "Mountain and Waters Sutra" (1240 A.D.)

When Studying Fish, Please Remember These Facts:

Badgers eat fish

Fish feel pain

Some fish have bones in their hair

Fish choose not to sleep

Isolation is your enemy

Never re-unite a lost fish with his mother

An albatross will show you some fish

Fish think differently than most bipeds

The Clear Waters may be deep and fast

Separate studies may require squid

Fish have little use for modern tools

The sun may affect the habits of larger fish

- Thank You
