a bit of southern italy for the arm-chair reclined

enjoy

i love this country. the people the food, the volcanoes, it's got it all.
apart from the attack of the medusa and the threat of melanoma (averted I am happy to say) we had a stunning time. Met a restauranteur (sp?) from Switzerland who runs a hut at 3000m where you have to book a table to get in (i had visions of hypothermic mountaineers feebly knocking on the door pleading for shelter from the storm and getting the response, "have you booked?" by crisply dressed waitresses accustomed to serving tarty young models and aging movie stars) who cooked like there was no tomorrow and drank a class of wine just slightly above my budget..oh well, if you insist.
the swimming was also awesome.. almost tropical.. schools of fish surrounding you, parrot fish, zebra fish, little red guppy like fish, funny fish with swallow tails.. amazing.  and the food.. stunning.. some of the best I have ever eaten.. a farmer's restaurant with a terrace overlooking Stromboli and an organic garden with a seemingly contented pig tied to a stake (there's a novel in there somewhere).. young families of racy decolletees and expensive sunglasses and spoilt kids invading the joint and the men disappearing.. (something I generally welcome).

and the markets.. the fish market, the vege market, the trash market, brilliant. Topped off with one of the 70 different flavors of gelati..

great place, just two weeks is far too short for a holiday.

Sounds GREAT, Bruce. Food, volcanoes, and (for me) the ancient remains are all good reasons for a Sicilian/Southern Italian vacation! Yeah, two weeks = too short.

Hey the END!!  wow, we must have just missed each other. I WAS on Stromboli (for all of 3 hours) on June 4. I remember you saying you had family from Salinas. You lucky thing. Got any pics to post? It is such a fantastic place.

We took the night cruise and saw about four lava fountains (from the safety of a boat deck) but it was amazing how bright they were with rocks falling down the sciara del fuoco. pretty awesome stuff.
thanks again everyone!

Oh Lord above, send down a dove; With wings as sharp as razors; To cut the throats of them mean blokes; That sells bad beer to sailors.

bit chilly: 33° in the shade, water about 21 to 23° no clouds for the first week then a bit of a storm followed by fine weather and sea breezes..

absolutely lousy in other words.  Can't wait to get to England for some decent weather for a change.

Bruce, exquisite photo journal!  I didn't want the slideshow to end.  VERY nice photo of you drinking espresso.  It's nice to see your face up close and personal.  Lucky Hannah...BAH!  {#Hug}

Thank you so much for allowing us to travel with you.  I'm having a yearning.  A need to return.

Some stunning pics there, enzo. As for "undeservedly"... feck that... you "deserve" it because you're a good egg.

Thanks R, R, W.

fwiw the greater part of my life was spent struggling to earn a crust and now, for a brief moment at least, the gods have graced me with the chance to do this stuff so I am going for it, totally undeservedly as it turns out but we'll ignore that for the moment. Glad you got some pleasure out of it.
