The grandparents are wrong. Selfish and wrong. As others have mentioned, I'm disappointed somebody did not stand up to them. Like, oh, their son.

Even if you don't put much stock in the Bible, it has some nuggets of good advice, one of which is that when two people get married, all of their other relationships take a back seat (slightly paraphrased, you understand). In our dealings with our families, we'd all do well to remember that our spouse is the single most important person in our life, and act accordingly. Easy to say from the bleacher seats, I know.

But it doesn't matter. It sounds like you're making the best of it, that's all anybody can do.

Jekyll family is a a good name for us! I usually refer to our extended family as the Manson family, for example, Holiday gatherings are referred to as the manson Family Xmas Special!! {#Wink}

I hope this makes you laugh, but at first when I saw the title of this journal (with my glasses on and not my contacts) I thought it said "jekyll family ..."

I made sure that my children got to know their out-of-town grandparents by visiting at least once a year, because even though they were people I greatly disliked I thought my kids were entitled to know them as they were.

I was wrong. Know it's getting thrown back in my face. I should not have made them spend time with people who were negative, racist, and unpleasant in many ways.

I'm sorry you have to deal with these petty, little people. And it sucks even more that they're relatives.

This is disappointing - on more than one level. I suppose it's unfair to deprive your children of even nasty grandparents (what, is she afraid of dog hair???), that she would place her own discomfort ahead of her grandchild's need for his service dog says a lot about THAT family. I found myself angry that your husband didn't stand up for his son. I know, I know, I'm not "supposed" to judge, but damn it's hard.

Manipulative people! They make a loaded offer, and then make you suffer because of it. Your husband should say, it's all of us or none of us. Doesn't seem fair to deprive the kids of the shore, but it also isn't fair that they are manipulating you. What if Ben was blind?

Personally I think that in the end you would all be better off staying home, because hanging out with people like these sucks anyway. You know I can relate, because I went through the same thing with my crazy in-laws (not to mention my own crazy mother) and my husband never had the balls to stand up for his own family. Try calling their bluff and say you all aren't coming unless the dog can come. See what happens.

I hope you can work this out to the satisfaction of everyone.

Service dogs have a special place in my heart.

This has just got to hurt at so many different levels.

Be brave and try to keep smiling.

Maybe you and Buster can have a good cry together.

Well I don't know the whole story, but I hope that some day you all will be able to spend the very close family times together...at the shore.
