That was confirmed for me when I saw her in concert a few months ago. Turns out her range in vocal and songwriting ability is quite limited. Plus, she has a HUGE ego, which was offputting. Sigh.

I love this one - it keeps capturing my attention - like a war-chant or a prayer. It would feel good to have this playing as people danced around a bonfire on a starlit night in the desert...
 

Oh my lord, my sweet sweet lord, where have I heard that opening riff?

This is one of those songs that seems new every time I hear it. Maybe I approach it differently each time, changing my perception of it, or maybe it just has a way of becoming something else whenever I hear it. Whatever the case, this will never be boring for me, because I enter into the listening with different eyes and ears each time.

I know - I'm not making any sense. But this is how I feel.

The guitar caught me. The vocals held me. I'd love to see a video of this. "Seven days to live my life, and seven ways to die..."

I finally figured it out: the reason I do not like this guy's voice is because it is a panty-burner. You just know if this guy walks by and says "pardon me"  the girl with you is gone. She is going home with him tonight. Jealousy, pure and simple.

Weird.... I borrowed all of the Wilco CDs from my daughter-in-law about eight years ago and didn't get into them much. Upon hearing the group over the past six years on RP, however, I've come to really appreciate Wilco.

This is a song about refugees, highly apposite for our times, and extremely moving. The guy has a brain and a conscience and a sense of solidarity.

That's so funny (as in strange) - The first time I heard this song was as the theme song of one of the DJ's at the local AM/FM radio station. I called in to ask what it was and who did it, and after that, the next time I heard it was by somebody like Henry Mancini.  I loved the song itself, so I recorded it on Dad's Ampex reel-to-reel while he was at work, and when he got home, I played it for him.  He and Mom loved it, so when I finally got the original recorded, I played it for them, and they were puzzled.  "Why would this guy mess up a perfectly good Mancini song?"

I laughed until I cried.

help me out — who does his voice sound just like...   I can hear another song in my head, can't put my brain-finger on it.

This makes me really miss sitting under the bridge across the river back home.  I used to lean against the cut stone piling in the sand and look out across the Hocking River while just sitting and thinking and listening to music.  I figured out my life so many times in that spot, too bad I wasn't able to keep up with all of those dreams.  Reality has a hard way of waylaying even the best laid plans... 

Still, even if very few of those daytime dreams ever came true, just dreaming them was a worthwhile experience that I wouldn't trade for anything.

I was about to slam this song, but then I realized that this is the stripped-down, stark, real version of it, without the "hahaha - bless my soul!" histrionics that, for me, distracted me from the actual lyrics. I like the Gnarls Barkley version for its danceability and sense of fun. And now, I like the Shawn Colvin rendition for the eerie, skeletal viewpoint.

Good song, whoever's version I hear.

For the last year or so, Beth Orton has been at the very top of my music diet.  Can't get enough of this woman's voice.  I wanna curl up inside her voice and stay there.  So tasteful, so beautiful.  Wouldn't have heard of her without RP.

I'm pretty sure that if I hear this song one more time, I'll be forced to bump it to a 9.  Yeah, I really like it a lot. The Verve are/were an amazing band, far ahead of their time, in retro- spect.

As a rule, I don't like the Stones with the exception of a few select songs.  This is added to the list of songs I like.

I love this song, too... The beauty of slow-dancing is that you don't have to move much - it's more of a sway, and even if it's not to the beat of the music, it still works.

Lady Madrugada, indeed, with the guitar and arrangement...and her voice is like lots of great singers silkily rolled into one...I LIKE IT!

I cannot listen to Mr. Hoyem's voice without shivers.... He has such a strong, powerful, confident voice - the fact that he's performing this song without a full band lends credence to his talent.  Man, I would LOVE to hear him sing the national anthem, after having heard so many horrible versions of it...

Then again, his voice just makes my entire internal system vibrate. Say what you will - Sivert Hoyem has a voice that could charm the stars down from the sky and make them dance.

Mine too.  I've seen the Hip play a few times. They are awesome live!

Coldplay are popular? Like you I miss all commercial TV and radio, because I don't watch or listen to it. Thus, I too like Coldplay. 

I also recommend this to everybody. Turn off your TV and block out all Main Stream Media including most 'News'papers and Magazines. Trust me, I'm a doctor.

For all of you that "like the blues, but not BB," I'm guessing you haven't seen him live.  He's such a genial man, laughing with his band, telling jokes and stories, and then ripping into a whiplash blues riff that kicks off the band into another tune — just like artistmarty's photo illustrates.  I'm sure those moments, and that feeling, gets edited out of TV concerts.

Saw him at the original Grand Ole Opry (Ryman) in Nashville two years ago.  I tell people it wasn't a concert, it was more like he was hanging out with us and some of his musician friends.  Lucille was in fine form.

I know, I know... But I have a version on MP3 of "Skyline Pigeon" from his first release, and it's a REMIX!  Jayzus - if you want the really good stuff, get the vinyl. At the very least, get the original, unmastered version. I hate technology sometimes...

I've listened to this song for over 30 years now, including seeing Pete Seeger perform it live several times (I live near him) and I have never thought of it as a religious song. Rather, I have always thought of it as a song about the Earth, a rememberance of how things move in cycles. That there is renewal and rebirth after death is not necessarily a religious notion. One only need go for walks in the woods throughout the seasons of the year to see the truth of this.

What?  What the hell was wrong with me that I only ranked this as a 6?  This is easily an 8.

If I could pick any male singing voice to have as my own, this guys voice would be on the short list.

I've never heard the complete version of this song before!  It seems amazing to me that every single version played on the radio has been edited!  Thank Gaia for Radio Paradise and the people who offer new music to the upload page.    I love THIS version of the song.

I saw him about two years ago and was greatly dissappointed. He'd play about half a song, then yammer on bout this or that, play half a song, etc. I don't think he played a full song the entire night. Really dissappointed.

Up next...Rufus Wainwright! Maybe Leonard Cohen will make a cameo too.

I love this song anyway, but a live version - slowed down a little, with more nuance, more emotion - this takes me to another place. (I still wish he'd substitute a cello, a harp, or a mandolin for that ever-irritating harmonica part.)  Not changing my 10. Neil Young will be what I have in my MP3 player, my CD player, or whatever I've got when the end of the world happens.

Weird thing... I go to sleep with RP playing on my computer. I have the volume turned down, because I share a house with my brother and I don't want to keep him awake. But I swear - every time this song comes on in the dark hours, I wake up, recognize it, revel in it, and carry it into my dreams.

I bought the CD, and tomorrow, I'm going to change out the music in my 10-CD player in my vehicle,and this, and Ludovico among others, will be on my new playlist. I suspect that between this music and my camera,some pretty good pictures will emerge. Meanwhile, I just love this song beyond words.

The more I hear this, the more it intrigues me and makes me feel creative. I have a sort of screenplay in my head to this song. Needs a lot of work, but the gist is of a woman who hears a pleasant female voice singing outside her bedroom window at night. She opens the window, and the singing stops.  Then, the woman notices that her baby, who cries incessantly, quiets as soon as the singing starts, and the baby starts crying again when the singing stops.  The house next door is vacant, so the woman has no idea from where the voice is coming...

Like I said - lots of work. This song would lend itself to the mood of the story I have in my head...

I'm ambiguous about The Cure - some songs of theirs I really like, and others make me run for the volume control to turn it down.  This is a good song, and a superb version of it.  9

I really wish you'd just go away, Stingray. You make it almost impossible to skip over your comments, which are usually gibberish and contain terribly misspelled words. Moreover, you're harsh, unforgiving, vindictive, childish, and insulting. I don't know what kind of world you live in, but I'm guessing it's mostly a self-centered, "me-me-me" place over which you rule with absolute tunnel-vision and quite a few tantrums and rants.

(Sorry, have to weigh in, too...)  With Elton John, the "change" seemed inevitable.  His stuff was so good and unique and he was so successful that it was too good to be true.... couldn't last forever.  lmic expressed that idea well.  With REM, their evolution seemed more deliberate than inevitable.  Hence the muddle.

What about Joni Mitchell?  Early stuff super good, later stuff has no appeal to me, yet she was such a creative genius and innovator that there was no way she would keep to her early form.  So, one is stuck between anger and resignation.

Bills does not play Coldplay to piss of the haters — the haters will always be there (and be annoying). He plays them for the simple reason that their music is very good and they have some brilliant songs.

P.S. for Coldplay Haters who continually whine: we know you hate their songs but shut up already. R.P. is not all about you.
