Susheela Raman - Orama
(May 22, 2011 - 16:58)
Lover of Lakshmi
Scion of the Solar Dynasty
I can’t bear this separation
Your lotus eyes instill in me
Belief that penetrates the depths of my heart
And yet you treat me as a stranger
Have you no place for those
Who have mastered the body
And fully realized themselves? I shall walk ahead
And you will follow
I shall walk ahead
And I love you all
Rest easy now, my child
Rest easy, I know you
The praise you gave
That my eyes were like flowers
Rest easy now, my child

Creedence Clearwater Revival - I Heard It Through The Grapevine

Jeremy Kittel - Disconnect
(Aug 20, 2010 - 19:07)
Nice - and extremely reminiscent of Montreux from 20+ years ago.

K.D. Lang - Helpless
(May 13, 2010 - 21:50)
Not the best tune for her to exercise the beauty of her voice.

Am I the only one hearing Summertime from Porgy and Bess?

Basement Jaxx - Scars

Vaguely reminds us of "Oh Industry" from the movie Beaches.

Hank Dogs - I'm an Angel
(Mar 09, 2010 - 22:13)
Much better than the dogs/M16 song. Maybe because it's not overplayed here like that was.

Cold War Kids - Audience
(Mar 04, 2010 - 20:19)
I can't abide this dry, pinched voice. Though it's not as grating as in Hang Me Up To Dry.

Calexico - Alone Again Or
(Mar 04, 2010 - 00:28)
This blows slightly less than the original.

The Be Good Tanyas - Scattered Leaves
(Jan 29, 2010 - 17:55)

Arcade Fire - My Body Is A Cage

Get your pitchforks and torches. I've always thought this sounded weak and cheesy. I frickin' HATE Tommy. All of it.

Television - Marquee Moon
(Jun 12, 2009 - 22:53)
Cold War Kids being strangled?

Can't help it. That kind of dry, tortured voice is far more unpleasant than nails on a chalkboard for me. There's no accounting for taste, of course.

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
(Jun 03, 2009 - 13:26)
Exquisite. Listening on headphones for the first time.

Wish I could give it an 11.

Cold War Kids - Hang Me Up To Dry

Neko Case - Prison Girls
(Mar 09, 2009 - 16:21)
Ponderous.

Neko Case - I'm An Animal
(Mar 03, 2009 - 15:01)
Is her voice supposed to sound flat in this? I'm not talking about the jarring - though blessed - lack of reverb.

U2 - No Line on the Horizon
(Feb 26, 2009 - 21:54)
What? is this what I'm listening to now? Really?

Jerry Douglas, Russ Barenberg & Edgar Meyer - Big Bug Shuffle
(Feb 21, 2009 - 22:18)
Edgar Meyer on stage is painful - he barely acknowledges the audience, and will chat with his colleagues during ovations - but his musicianship is brilliant.

Beethoven - Symphony No.5 - Allegro Con Brio
(Feb 19, 2009 - 21:18)
DJ pee-break music?

Passenger - Night Vision Binoculars
(Feb 16, 2009 - 21:14)
Love the snappy beat with the creepy sentiment. Can't help it. But totally, totally creepy.

George Winston - Cast Your Fate to the Wind

Johnny Cash - Hurt

I never liked Johnny Cash when I was a child. My stepfather, who I could not stand for so many reasons, loved him and used to sit around playing his guitar and singing a lot of Cash's songs. As a kid, I really didn't understand why I disliked Cash so much and it took a long time to vanquish the connection I'd made between he and my stepfather.
After that, I found that I love Johnny's music, the man and his heart. RIP JC

As for the Nine Inch Nails cover?   no comment ; )

I love Cash's music. I hate Cash's voice. He has ALWAYS sounded to me like he's about to cough up a lung. Can't help it. Sucko-barfo.

AC/DC - It's A Long Way To The Top

Hank Dogs - 18 Dogs

18 dogs is way too many. So is the number of times I've heard this on RP over the years.

Roger McGuinn & Calexico - One More Cup of Coffee
(Nov 13, 2008 - 15:21)

Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill

Supertramp - School

U2 - Dancing Barefoot
(Sep 29, 2008 - 13:59)
I think this cover sucks the life out of this song.

Neko Case - Maybe Sparrow
(Sep 14, 2008 - 01:56)
I could do without all the reverb once in a while, and with some subtlety in her voice. Any subtlety.

Neko Case - Behind The House
(Sep 13, 2008 - 17:19)
She's not my cuppa tea in any case, but this seems particularly uninspired.

I shouldn't be surprised that I can't remember why I like this so much.
Underworld - Ring Road

Is that north end (in Chatsworth) or south end (in Topanga)? The fire started at the north end and is presently not threatening any homes there. I spoke with my Dad in Chatsworth, he says that everything is covered in ash, but no problems other than that. Only one home is reported destroyed so far, and it was in Bell Canyon. We were lucky that this was the only fire this time, more of the states fire fighting resources were sent to protect property in this fire. We weren't so lucky last time when much more of the state was on fire at the same time. Topanga was never in a target area of this fire, but that only leaves them vulnerable for future fires. All the burned areas are now candidates for mudslides in the first heavy rains, since there is now nothing to hold the soil in place.

I'm tired, going from a disaster from too much water to one from too little water, and I miss my dogs, who are still enjoying their visit at their cousin's house, but everything else is ok, thank God. Sherri and I did not have a good evacuation plan, so if things did go the wrong way, everything in the house would go with it. I think we are going to work on a better plan on what to take with once we're rested.

Even with all that has happened, and all that could yet happen, even with the state and nation's politics the way that they are, I still can't think of a place I'd rather live and raise my kids, and I'm happy I could afford to do exactly that.

Oh heavens!

Wow.

My friend's address is Topanga Canyon Blvd, Topanga. I'm a geography retard, don't know more than that.

My prayers with you all.

Arnie! I have a friend at the very end of Topanga Canyon Road. Any idea what's happened up there? Glad to hear you're home and I hope it stays that way, and safe.

Hello, RP! Missed ya lots!

I was just about to ask whether I was the only one who's noticed that this guy can't sing.

I noticed it right off but found it mostly pleasant and actually somewhat charming within the context of the composition - right up until the strings, which went a bit farther than I cared for. I don't remember hearing this song before, and I did have some powerful drugs this morning, so I should probably just keep my mouth shut.
Modest Mouse - Float On

This song has some vague appeal (though I'm kinda wearied of it from their TV commercials shilling this album) but I have to ask: do they work real hard to sound that bad?

Mike Scott - Bring 'em all in

Though the lyrics are indeed repetitive, I find the sentiment, the meaning, to be so moving. The words speak to me as I try to find my way in a violent, cold, twisted, angry world that I want to shut out, but that shuts me out of the good stuff, too. The only way to walk consciously in this world is to embrace the whole catastrophe, and for an empath like me, that's really really hard.
