Michelle Shocked - If Love Was a Train (Apr 11, 2013 - 09:14) | Good Gawd folks, the song was great when first released, it's still good now.
For her to show up in Frisco and make that rant,...well, somethings wrong there, right?! Does anyone suppose that she might be in a slightly diminished capacity?! That she could be or has broken down in some way?! Is anyone really thinking this through? Because if it doesn't look right and doesn't sound right clearly there must be something wrong!

Ive seen very interesting arguments that Judaism was primarily responsible for the destruction of the Roman imperial tyranny through its Christian branch. Similarly, it could be seen as a significant contributor to the destruction of European monarchical tyrannies through its Protestant sub-branch. Other examples could be cited. One could make an argument that Judaism is one of the worlds greatest and most powerful cultures. Of course these viewpoints are predicated on a cultural and not racial argument. As an American this is a natural viewpoint as we are a culture that does not have a race. As such, Id certainly say that they were one of the winners.

Where were you when it happened?

Were you at the front of the stage?
Or in the underground?
From SF out to Old Bridge
New York back to LA
The world of metal changed forever
Back in the day
Well that was back in the day
And if you weren't there
It doesn't matter anyway
Because you wouldn't understand
Live to die and die to play
Every day and place
Leave a path of metal
Across the world from stage to stage
Well that was back in the day
And if you weren't there
It doesn't matter anyway
Because you wouldn't understand
In denim and leather
We were all part of one force
Knocked rock and roll on its ass
And put metal on the course
Back in the day
And if you weren't there
It doesn't matter anyway
Because you wouldn't understand
This is our way of life
A life that was born free
To fellow orders how to live
Was never meant to be
Oh, oh-oh, oh, oh-oh
Peals of thunder, sheets of lightening
The power hits the stage
The music was exciting
The mania raged
Oh, oh-oh, oh, oh-oh
We all had the fever
Our ears started to ring
Feeding the wildfire
Consuming everything
Oh, oh-oh, oh, oh-oh
Metals king back then
Still to this day
Others imitate or challenge
But it never goes away
Oh, oh-oh, oh, oh-oh

If there's a memory to be had, it's for those of us that get to say "I knew him when..." in a few years.
Almost two years to the day. Thanks, Bill.
So, Monkeysdad, how's Jack Johnson doing these days?
Ah, here's a good one:
Music's still a 'hobby' for singer Jack Johnson
Friday, August 12, 2005
Johnson's laid-back approach to his music -- and life -- belie his success as a platinum-selling star. Since his debut with the album "Brushfire Fairytales" in 2001, his albums have sold a total of about 3 million copies. His latest best seller is "In Between Dreams."
Pretty good for a guy who considers himself a surfer first, contributes heavily to the environment and Hawaii, and calls music a hobby. Memory indeed.
Still sucks Mr. Fish...two years later and he still sucks. At least there's still music we do agree on.

In any case, I think Radiohead is divine, and often their music is otherworldly. I did not convince myself of this. The recognition of sublime music was the key. If you have to convince yourself music is worthy, you need a new hobby.
Here, here. It grows on you doesn't it. Somewhere back in these logs I've mentioned in the past that I'd bought 2 CD's of theirs in '98 after being recommended by someone whose taste in music I did not question, did'nt like them.... Then I pulled them out after hearing a song here and there on RP and gave them another go and much to my surprise I absolutely love this stuff now. I guess you have to let it catch up with you instead of trying to keep up with it.

ok, i'll play. impact, schimpact. PG is the apex of LZ's musicianship. There are some interesting cuts on Presence, InTTOD reflects the bands dissipation, with JPJones coming to the fore, and not always for the better. Excellent raw power; great electric blooz on LZ1. I like 3 more than 2, maybe because of overplay of 2, but maybe also because 3 to me was more interesting. LZ1 did all of what 2 did, but better to my ears. 4 and Houses are undeniably strong. I just find myself gravitating to PG, 3 and 1 when I want a Zep fix. This note reminds me to pop in Presence as it has been too long. Lots of less commercial Zep continues to sound good on radio stations such as RP and an increasingly smaller number of Triple A's that dabble in cool (and typically less familar to the masses) classic rock. Seaside, Evermore, Ten Years Gone, Out on the Tiles, Dazed, How Many More Times, Custard Pie, In My Time of Dying (when it you really want to rawk!) and lots of others.
1. PG
2. 1
2. 3
4. 4
5. 2
6. Houses
7. Presence
8. InTTOD
Don't dismiss the entire output because so much of it has been burnt. Some good stuff in their catalog that sounds great in the RP mix.

Giraffes - Gone Again Gone (Oct 29, 2003 - 15:24) | Tongue in cheek, reminds me of Primus somehow. Isn't this somehow related to Presidents of the United States of America?
|
Tracy Chapman - Crossroads (Oct 28, 2003 - 17:04) | :puke: I'm not sure who I dislike more, Tracy Chapman or her brother Jack Johnson
|
Focus - Hocus Pocus (Oct 27, 2003 - 10:19) | grahamophone wrote: This song is the punchline to a joke that starts somewhat like this:
"So... J.S. Bach, Wylie Gustafson, the guys from Jethro Tull, Weird Al Yankovic and his dad are all in an airplane which is about to crash...."
:butt:
Ze Germans have a word for it (which can be construed positively or negatively): "Verarschung" (hence the emoticon!)
I'm sure those Dutch have a similar one ....
Sank you very much ladees and schentlemen, he vill be here all zee veek!
|
Focus - Hocus Pocus (Oct 27, 2003 - 10:17) | Nice move Bill, every now and then you pull a rabbit out the hat!
|
Joseph Arthur - Redemption's Son (Oct 23, 2003 - 09:46) | I't s getting to the point that when I hear the first notes of this song, I just sit down and enjoy it. Wonderful tune.
|
Warren Zevon - Werewolves Of London (Oct 22, 2003 - 15:18) | To all the naysayers: It's just tongue-in-cheek, light hearted fun. Stop taking every song on here so friggin' seriously!
|
Kate Bush - Cloudbusting (Oct 17, 2003 - 13:49) | I love the way they incorporated the marching band type beat/drumming in there, different.
|
Pearl Jam - Can't Keep (Oct 14, 2003 - 14:20) | At last, something "new" from PJ. Never one of my favorites but this song hooked me.
|
White Stripes - Apple Blossom (Oct 14, 2003 - 13:24) | Not quite as polished as Elephant (which isn't to polished either) but these two are where it's at right now, solid, raw, unapologetic, and original. Not too many bands can say that anymore.
|
Joni Mitchell - California (Oct 10, 2003 - 09:13) | Thank God Joni embraced jazz and all it's influences put away all that shrill singing and found her husky smooth smoke filled bar voice.
|
Beth Orton - Thinking About Tomorrow (Oct 09, 2003 - 16:25) | NotApplicable wrote: Give up Beth!
There is no tomorrow, it will only be today's events remixed and repeated, ad infinitum.
'Cause we all like the comfort of familiarity.
Sometimes I think rigor mortis sets in the moment we realize we are alive. Fear of the 'unknown' sets us firmly within the bounds of the comfortable 'understood/recognizable'.
Are we nothing more than a collection of dead memories? Snapshots of times that never existed?
I keep looking for the spice of life that is today, but all I ever find is imagined nostaligia, and the comfort of fitting into its associated 'routines'.
Meanwhile, I've heard this song in the place of hundreds of others...
But it's probably just me. After all, when I go CD shopping, I only buy stuff I've never heard of.
What the hell are you on???

Autumn's Child - Forever Dreaming (Oct 09, 2003 - 15:41) | KevDog wrote: What's that old saying? "Autumn's Child is bland, repetitive, mind-numbing, boring, and imminently forgettable?" Yeah, that's it.
Wooooord, KevDog!
|
Patti Smith - Frederick (Oct 09, 2003 - 13:17) | So much more upbeat than anything I've ever heard her do. I'm pleasantly surprised.
|
Jeff Buckley - Grace (Oct 08, 2003 - 16:02) | Spliff wrote: This is like a Star Search show gone bad.
Ha Ha Ha Ha!
|
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Otherside (Oct 08, 2003 - 15:52) | Anyone remember "Fight like a Brave", they still had energy then, they don't even sound interested in doing this song.
|
Radiohead - Backdrifts (Oct 03, 2003 - 13:25) | reindeer wrote: Excellent tune. I love it!
I love the way this album slams Bush's right-wing extremist ideology. Heh.
You mean their lyrics are actually decipherable and have meaning? That kind of takes the fun out of it all, next thing you're going to tell me is that Yes' words have meaning too.
|
Bruce Springsteen - Human Touch (Oct 03, 2003 - 12:47) | beelzebubba wrote: I have NEVER gotten the Bruce thing. I don't hate the man, but I just don't get it.
Is his music really THAT good?
I've had some friends who have always said to me, oh you have to listen to his lyrics, you'll love his lyrics.
Sorry, but if I can't get into the tune, then what's the point of listening to the lyrics? I might as well read poetry then, eh?
Whew! I thought I was the only one out here that thought that!
|
Radiohead - Go to Sleep (Oct 01, 2003 - 12:43) | I agree with redeye, I had bought a couple of their albums 5 years back, listened to them and filed them in a big pile of never listened to CD's. After hearing them here on RP, the songs grew on me a little more and more, I recently dusted those CD's off and that's all my son and I are listening to for weeks now, it gets better all the time, grows on you.

John Kongos - Tokoloshe Man (Sep 26, 2003 - 14:34) | guymac wrote: Sounds like John Lennon "lost weekend" stuff with, like, three drummers at once, all manner of drugged-out session players going in random directions at once... please retire it!
That bad huh???
|
Frank Zappa - Joe's Garage (Sep 23, 2003 - 13:48) | How fun is this?! We need more of this Bill, how about "Wild Love"?
Amaaaaaaazing! Someone actually gave this a "1"
|
Solas - Dignity (Sep 17, 2003 - 13:31) | Another RP regular that gets better with every listen!
|
Better Than Ezra - Good (Sep 17, 2003 - 10:34) | I'm with Vingenzo and Lily, good song, it went away long enough that it sounds fresh again in my mind.
|
Blue Oyster Cult - Astronomy (Sep 16, 2003 - 10:42) | Like so many acts, this one had it's time and is now only a fond memory, better stuff is played on RP, now and then they remind us of our past.
|
Tornadoes - Telstar (Sep 16, 2003 - 10:28) | Kinda sounds like the muzak you hear in old folks homes. Cheessssssy!
|
Throwing Muses - Golden Thing (Sep 16, 2003 - 09:38) | I'll differ from Knucklehead (appropriate!) this song does have a specialness, it was far more special in 1988 when there wasn't a huge rush to come up with a bunch of "chick bands". TM established themselves well as a viable band in my eyes. Wonder what Kirstens doing now????
|
Warren Zevon - Mr. Bad Example (Sep 11, 2003 - 11:21) | That was just Brilliant! It's a shame that it's taken his loss to rediscover the talent that I embraced as a teen, and lost for whatever reason. I'll rectify that with Amazon.com. Keep 'em coming Bill!
|

Maybe you should take a hint and stop whining, turn off the PC and go on about your business, if you're offended by whats played online maybe you should move on to PBS or something nice and Politically Correct thats made it through all the screeners and scrubbers, you don't belong here.

Jack Johnson - Taylor (Sep 10, 2003 - 13:23) | Roverfish wrote:
Gotta disagree here...
Facts to the contrary:
Amazon.com Sales Rank: 10
Featured on NPR.
Supported and followed by numerous major artists.
If there's a memory to be had, it's for those of us that get to say "I knew him when..." in a few years.
Well Roverfish, I guess that makes all the difference in the world. If any of this were of consequence, I guess I'd feel the same way and be watching ABC, CBS, and NBC with all that cheesy stuff that the masses like too. Your same argument could be used for Britney Spears for crying out loud.
|
Doves - Darker (Sep 08, 2003 - 16:55) | Someone said: A mix between Radiohead and U2. Definitely!

I was gonna get all pissy at you but then I look at the songs you gave 10s to, Little Feat and Earl Srcuggs. Let's just leave it at that.

i think i am the only person to have said anything negative. oh well. i think it was 'everybody hurts' that turned me off. waaaaaaaaay off. since then, i don't see the appeal. :???:
Let's not forget "Losing my Religion", conceited geek that Stipe is!
|
Yes - And You And I (Aug 19, 2003 - 16:53) | Quite a fine song to wind down the workday, goosebumps and everything, Thanks Bill!
|
Madrugada - Majesty (Aug 18, 2003 - 15:49) | An awful lot like Leonard Cohen, who the Norwegians look up to in a BIG way!
|
Elton John - Amoreena (Aug 18, 2003 - 15:13) | samiyam wrote: I don't understand, did I hate Elton John a younger man because he's so crass or do I love him as an older man because he's sooooo goooood?
I don't understand. I wouldn't have been caught dead with an EJ album when I was in college. Now, I have about 7 and they get constant listening. Did Elton change or did I?
Samiyam :-k :-k
Good acts always stand the test of time I'd say Sam!
|
Poe - Haunted (Aug 14, 2003 - 16:40) | This one just keeps gettin' better with every listen!
|
Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Aug 14, 2003 - 15:15) | Some think that DSOTM is their best work but I feel Wish You Were Here is, this song being the proof. Gilmores guitar is like ice cutting ice.
|
Greg Brown - Just A Bum (Aug 11, 2003 - 15:55) | KevDog wrote: Greg Brown is a national treasure. If this were 70 years ago, people would be recording him for the Smithsonian as they did with Leadbelly and Woody.
You're a fool!!!
|
Greg Brown - Just A Bum (Aug 11, 2003 - 15:54) | This is Jack Johnson's more evil twin. Both slovenly devils if you ask me.
|

Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Relax (Aug 05, 2003 - 13:58) | This isn't eclectic, intelligent, or anything like it. This truly sux. 'Ol Holly is probably laughing in his/her grave that anyone even remembers this bit of tripe from the 80's!
|

Ah yes,one more pc twit, we can't have conservatives with opinions can we? Nice to see that the League of the Perpetually Hysterical is still out there sucking thier thumbs and crying foul as usual.
