Beth Orton - Central Reservation (original version) (Aug 20, 2003 - 12:45) | Do you think Minnie Ripperton music best known, like Nick Drake, from a commercial (in her case Burger King!)

Or Minnie Ripperton's "Loving You"....which oddly enough I heard last night at a poker game, after how many years?....and last Friday someone told me their first concert ever was - yes - a Minnie Ripperton concert.
Coincidence? I think not!
Perhaps this would be a propitious time to look up Minnie's birthdate and invest in some lottery tickets.

Love - Alone Again Or (Aug 20, 2003 - 12:38) | Great Great Song on a Great Great Album. RIP Brian McLean. I guess Arthur Lee is out of Prison.
BTW, anyone ever hear the Damned cover of this incredible song.
|
Flaming Lips - Fight Test (Aug 20, 2003 - 07:53) | Awesome song. I think I gave it the highest rating of any song I've ever given on RP (8). Can't beat that virgin listen to a great P!O!P! tune. I had a girlfriend who loved the FL but I wasn't always so into them. Anyhow, this definiely made my day. :D

Placebo - Sleeping With Ghosts (Aug 20, 2003 - 06:52) | redeyespy wrote: Still trying to deal with his voice.......
His VOICE? Have you ever seen him. He looks like a very sexy girl.

Belle & Sebastian - I Don't Love Anyone (Aug 19, 2003 - 13:37) | This band is incredible and it's from one of their best two albums. BTW, the reference in the song to "I met a man today, he told me something very strange...that the world is as soft as lace" refers to Lawrence from Felt (and Felt's excellent "The world is as soft as lace"). Of course, Felt is another band that should be played on RP.
|
The Verve - Lucky Man (Aug 19, 2003 - 12:29) | This band is awesome and this album is awesome. RP should play them much more often.
|
Eleanor McEvoy - Precious Little (Aug 19, 2003 - 10:50) | FakePlasticWatch wrote: Yes! The George W. Bush theme song!
...I do remember this one from the '80s, I think. Liked it then, like it now.
Wasn't it 90's? I just associate this with my master's thesis.
|
Liz Phair - What Makes You Happy (Aug 19, 2003 - 10:39) | Not bad. Much better than that "Supernova" garbage I over-heard (as in the sense it was overplayed) during the 90's.
|
Elvis Costello - Deep Dark Truthful Mirror (Aug 19, 2003 - 10:35) | You know, this is going to PO a lot of people, but in my mind, there's not too much difference between Elton John and Elvis Costello. Even their names are similar. The only difference is that Elton John came first so I guess he's more original. But I kind of like Elton John, at least the first few albums. Can't really say the same for Elvis Costello.

Moby - Porcelain (Aug 19, 2003 - 10:23) | What do you mean?!? He's been around for more than 10 years already! If this is just the beginning, his career will be like 60 years!

Cocteau Twins - Road, River And Rail (Aug 19, 2003 - 10:20) | Oh, I love the CT. I had a phase where I bought all there albums and even got to see them live. Elisabeth Fraser is so unbelievable live. How such a powerful voice can come out of such a tiny body, I'll never know. I recently saw the video for "pearly dewdrops drops" on that VH1 classics channel (on JetBlue airlines enroute to LA). The video was pretty lame, but the CT are still great. BTW someone asked about why the CT stood out in terms of bands with unique guitar. Anyhow, they pretty much invented, or at least made widely well known, the genre of dreamy ambient pop. I mean what would 4AD have been without them. Pretty much nothing.
|
Belle and Sebastian - The Boy With The Arab Strap (Aug 18, 2003 - 13:51) | This band should get played a lot more on RP. Their first two albums were unbelievable (as well as singles they've done between albums which feature tracks not released on albums), This is not nearly their best song. Try "The State I'm In" or "Judy and the Dream of Horses."
|
Fleetwood Mac - Tusk (Aug 18, 2003 - 12:33) | I guess this is the disadvantage of being an eclectic radio station.
|
Dada - Dizz Knee Land (Aug 18, 2003 - 12:21) | I remember when this song came out and I thought it was pretty boring and still do. But it is funny how "I just flipped off President George" ports pretty well after all these years.
|
The Smashing Pumpkins - Rhinocerous (Aug 18, 2003 - 12:09) | Come on, this is a nice classic. SP aren't the greatest of bands, but certainly not worthy of the indie-snob ire accorded to them.
