Radiohead - The Daily Mail (Dec 08, 2012 - 02:28) | No matter how much I agree with the sentiments, it's not in tune and it's not clever.

I've just listened to an interview with Joni on Woman's Hour {1} on Radio Four (on the BBC) and she revealed (at 14:30 into the program) that the cat's name is Telemachus (the father of Ulysses) and Gerry (Goffin) named him. Alas the cat (kitty) is no more. {1}. The program is at http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00jpg35/Womans_Hour_08_04_2009/ for UK listeners, but if you use ipdl.exe anyone can download it and listen to it at their leisure.

I see that I've already awarded a 1 to this whiner!

Wouldn't that make the score wrap around past 10 to arrive back at 1 again?
Good!

Neil Young - Powderfinger (Aug 31, 2007 - 00:30) | I LOVE IT when Neil Young comes on RP!!
It's such a potent reminder to switch over to the LRC.

I just uploaded it. And, yes, it's much better. More power. More intensity.

And it's been rejected with no LRC plays. Color me puzzled. :-(

Harmonica is acceptable, lyrics fine, singing (aka whining) awful.

Counting Crows - Anna Begins (Mar 04, 2006 - 08:10) | Listening in the other room, I had to come in to see who it was -- I thought it was Nizlopi.
Oh well.
Not bad anyway. 5 or 6, I think.

Finley Quaye - Maverick a Strike (Nov 05, 2005 - 01:54) | A friend of mine once said that you have to listen to rubbish occasionally because that makes you appreciate good stuff even more.
Well, I've done my bit for today -- back to the good stuff please!

1 Giant Leap - My Culture (w/Robbie Williams & Maxi Jazz) (Oct 30, 2005 - 09:54) | BassHombre wrote: Robbie Williams is the dude from Faithless, no?
Robbie Williams is originally from the boy-band Take That.
When the band split, he moved on to a very successful solo career. He's very big here in the UK. Gives excellent concerts. A natural showman. I suppose he mainly appeals to mums and daughters. Usually ends with his shows with his first mega-hit Angels.
I like quite a bit of his stuff.

Love - Alone Again Or (Sep 24, 2005 - 15:42) | If anyone's looking forward to a Love concert this year, you'd better read this first...
I'm not saying that the band aren't good (they are) but it may not be what you expect.
Bummer. :(

Leon Redbone - So, Relax (Sep 15, 2005 - 10:52) | apd wrote: was this the song used in the British Rail ad from the early 90's?
Yes. Shot in soft-focus and with lots of furry-edged props visible (slippers, cardies, cushions, edges of lamps, etc) and the camera moving gently from scene to scene while the outside world races past.
It came No. 76 in the Channel 4 program of 2000 "The 100 Greatest TV Adverts" which was hosted, 'in the best possible taste', by Graham Norton.
Another of Kaye's ads -- this one for Dunlop -- came in at No. 69 and had Velvet Underground's Venus in Furs as the backing track.
More than you wanted to know, eh? ;)
|
KT Tunstall - Other Side of the World (Jul 25, 2005 - 11:47) | Quite memorable.
Hmmm... That sounds a bit hi-falutin.
What I meant was that I keep remembering this song, and it's a pleasant memory.

It's the tune of the song which Kaa the snake sings to Mowgli in The Jungle Book. The title is Trust in Me.
|
Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros - Long Shadow (Aug 15, 2004 - 05:43) | Hmmm... At first, I thought it was one of those joke songs, y'know?
Subsequent hearings don't remove it from that category. :puke:
Uh-oh... I hear Cash approaching. Time for the LRC...
|
Youngbloods - Get Together (Jun 29, 2004 - 10:29) | Hmmm... It's been a long while since I heard this.
Very reminiscent of Richard Thompson's playing on some of his first Fairport tracks.

Jesse Cook - Red (May 19, 2004 - 12:09) | Crikey! I've not heard Jesse Cook before. Wow!Â

Cesaria Évora - Sodade (live) (May 12, 2004 - 13:06) | I liked this well enough to come here and give it a 6. And surprising for me to add a comment, given that I've never heard them before.
I mean... it's pretty good for a live performance.
And 'audience clapping too much'? C'mon guys... have you never been to a live gig?

Robert Earl Keen - Furnace Fan (May 07, 2004 - 09:17) | I though, for a moment, that Phoebe from 'Friends' had actually released a record.
This is very reminiscent of her Smelly Cat.

Johnny Cash - Hurt (Dec 27, 2003 - 03:24) | Unfortunately, every time I hear this, I have to come back to lower my initial rating for it.
And it started at 4.

Sinéad O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U (Jul 27, 2003 - 02:31) | From way back in 2000:
After all the play this one has had through the years, it still stops me cold every time.
Amen. Such passion.
|
Neil Young - Like a Hurricane (Jul 27, 2003 - 02:16) | ::sigh:: I know that I should like Neil Young, but his voice is just so whiney and his guitar work is so... well, it just doesn't quite 'Get There'.
|
Love - You Set the Scene (Jul 15, 2003 - 14:17) | Yay!
Hey, did you know about the Calexico version of Alone Again Or? It's been played on BBC Radio 2 over here in the UK.
|
Indigo Spirit - Legends (Jul 12, 2003 - 09:27) | Sounds enough like the theme from "Old Grey Whistle Test' to drag me in from the other room. Nice. :)
|
Cinerama - Cat Girl Tights (May 25, 2003 - 01:51) | The only redeeming feature of this one is that it fits right in with the current sequence. Score: 2
|
Elliott Smith - Waltz #2 (May 25, 2003 - 01:22) | This doesn't even have the distinction of being simply terrible: it's just terribly simple.
|
Love - Alone Again Or (May 10, 2003 - 10:29) | a "little too LA".
Actually, they're playing in LA (UCLA Royce Hall) on May 30.
|
Johnny Cash - Hurt (Apr 27, 2003 - 07:42) | Some of the words in this have been tickling away at the back of my mind until, today, I remembered where I'd heard them before...
In Robert Heinlein's _Time Enough For Love_, Lazarus is talking to his identical twin daughters ('clones' of himself actually) and, because nobody else can tell them apart, he's wondering if they know who is who.
One of the twins says,
*----------cut here----------*
"Oh, yes, I do! Sometimes she goes away, but I'm always right here."
Lazarus paused in midflight, looked thoughtful. "That may be the most succinct statement of the solipsist thesis I've ever heard. Write it down."
*----------cut here----------*
Isn't it great when you rememeber something that's been niggling away at the back of your mind for ages. :)
|
Luka Bloom - Diamond Mountain (Apr 26, 2003 - 03:59) | I had to wait until the end before I awarded this a 1.
I just couldn't believe it would be this bad all the way through, and I kept hoping it would have just one redeeming feature -- a half-decent riff, a spot of amusing word play, whatever. Sadly, no.
|
Love - You Set the Scene (Apr 04, 2003 - 16:26) | does it ever end??
Yep. It's an almost perfect end to an almost perfect album.
:)
|
R.E.M. - Wall of Death (Mar 26, 2003 - 14:37) | Not bad. But...
I have to echo the other comments re: the Richard and Linda Thompson version.
|
Jethro Tull - Skating Away (on the Thin Ice of the New Day) (Mar 08, 2003 - 09:23) | Oh, this is just SO good.
And, as for affectations such as the codpiece and tights... well....
... at a concert in 1968? as the obligatory 3 minute drum solo started, I saw Ian dismantle his flute, pack it away, retrieve a packet of Benson & Hedges out of his furry sporran, light one, smoke it furiously down to the tip, drop it, grind it out with a leather-booteed foot, open the flute case, re-assemble the flute, put it to his lips, spin around and come in again perfectly on cue for the rest of the number.
He's been an entertainer from Day One. :)
|
Pearl Jam - Alive (Feb 10, 2003 - 09:48) | I don't know. They've got enthusiasm, skill, power, etc etc, but they just seem to lack something. To me, they just sound a little... thin.
Sorry. Only acceptable, I'm afraid.

Tori Amos - God (Feb 10, 2003 - 09:09) | Gosh! I was in the other room and heard this playing... Alanis where are you?
Most excellent.

Spirit - Fresh Garbage (Jan 25, 2003 - 10:28) | As was said a year ago... this was a mainstay in my college days. Cool!
|
Pavement - Range Life (Jan 19, 2003 - 03:25) | This is the first record I ever bought from Sonic Sounds in Lincoln, UK, after hearing it on Mark Radcliffe's radio show on Radio 1... cool. :)
|
Love - Alone Again Or (Jan 18, 2003 - 06:02) | Went to the 'Love with Arthur Lee' concert last night in Cambridge. The house was packed, the band was excellent, the brass and strings a delight and Arthur's voice is still superb.
|
The Who - The Seeker (Jun 28, 2002 - 13:02) | But what a way to go -- not stuck at home whiling away his last days, but up there on the edge, just about to start another tour. Rock on, Ox!
