Talk Talk - I Believe In You
(Mar 20, 2013 - 15:36)
This album was their swans song ... but by gosh was it excellent then ... and still solid today :)

Gary Numan - Cars
(Dec 14, 2011 - 09:06)
Cheesy?

Seriously - this song will last the ages ... how many snyth bands took birth after hearing Gary and the Tubeway Army. I can clearly remember hearing him for the first time from an LP my brother brought back from the UK to our little town in isolated British Columbia where all we heard on AM radio was "Clap for the Wolfman", "Snow Bird" and "Wreck of the Edmund's Fitzgerald".

This music is timeless to me... will always remember pulling out the album - dropping the Nad needle on it and cranking up the Sansui's way up for this ...

There is a great rendition of this on YouTube with Nine Inch Nails with Gary ... simply amazing live performance actually :)

Love the TH that I've heard, and only have 1 disc.  What are the top CD recs from fans of theirs? Love to get 1 or 2 more of their best.

Road Apples is the best - hands down
Trouble in the Hen House would be second

The Tragically Hip - Nautical Disaster
(Dec 05, 2011 - 12:47)
Just had visions of Gordie jumping around the stage - transported  to a different state of being ... I was very lucky to be a young man when these guys came out - so few Canadian acts sing / talk about Canadian issues as they all dream of making the big bucks south of the border.

They still have a great impact on me when I listen to them ... fantastic back in the day

Waterboys - Fisherman's Blues
(Mar 10, 2011 - 16:15)
Some of the best road trip music one can play while driving... I can not think of the Canadian Rockies without thinking of this tune blasting on the sterio as we drove along the mountain streams and the spring flowers

The two are now forever intertwined to me :)

Norah Jones - Come Away With Me
(Dec 22, 2010 - 10:49)

When it first came out this record was simply amazing to listen to - however like many things that have been hyped a little too much by the record executives; Norah, Cowboy Junkies and Natalie Merchant seem to fall into the same space for me.

I can enjoy it still - but only in minute doses, as more than anything the songs remind me of years past, love and relationships ... maybe the works have become more than pieces of music - but associations of an event and hence its harder for me to just "enjoy" the songs for what they are.

Sorry Norah - you get very little air time with me now - your tucked away with the Junkies and Tigerlily.

Traveling Wilburys - End Of The Line
(Dec 13, 2010 - 12:49)
As much as I love LOVE the talent in this group - I find it like Oatmeal ... its perfect for safe top 30 radio ... but to listen for enjoyment ... I would have to say pass.

Its ok background music in a soap shop or a place where you buy crafts and such - not something I would play at home to kick it to or relax to.

Old people music really ... pretty safe stuff.

Tori Amos - Silent All These Years (Live w/ Leonard Cohen)
(Dec 13, 2010 - 12:40)
Kate Bush called, she wants her style back

R.E.M. - Me In Honey
(Dec 13, 2010 - 09:45)
Before the band started to slide ... as much as I loved LOVED REM - I believe they should have hung up the skates a few years back now and should have left on a high note.

Rosie and Me - Bonfires
(Dec 13, 2010 - 09:41)
I would in a million years would have never picked these guys from Brazil ... wow ... great happy music, and would agree this is commercial music just waiting to happen.

All the best of luck to these folks to make a buck or two off this happy tune :)

Patty Griffin - Burgundy Shoes
(Dec 07, 2010 - 13:01)
As for Richard Marx - I think this chord progression is used in about a thousand tunes... I think its almost stock file like using Chuck D or James Brown to a hip hop band for sampling.

That aside - I wonder how many of us will be thought of in this way by our children? I do so want my children to look up to me this way, I guess I want to give them everything that I didnt have and opportunity to have, and I would be so incredibly proud if one of my daughters was to write a song like this... I cant think of anything better than being a parent and mentor to my kids.

Even if it does have the same progression as Richard Marx, Journey and about a hundred other bands :)

Zero 7 - Home
(Dec 07, 2010 - 09:15)
Tina would be allowed to have her way with me - Just saying

R.E.M. - Orange Crush
(Nov 30, 2010 - 10:42)
This is when REM was good - and a band, we forget how fantastic they were after the sub-par music they have been recently putting out. Man this album was simply amazing to listen to.

Sinéad O'Connor - Downpressor Man
(Nov 30, 2010 - 10:32)

I always think they're singing about this guy.   Poor guy.

Tounge - pressor Man ... yes, yes she is signing about this very man :)

Ok - I laughed when I read this ... I get it ... people this is funny right here

The Cars - Moving In Stereo
(Nov 03, 2010 - 11:06)
Phoebe Cates  ... simple as that - anyone who doesnt understand - was not a teen boy in the 80's

Elbow - Mirrorball
(Sep 15, 2010 - 11:38)
Magical ... reminds me of holding my baby girl in my arms, I would sway her back and forth to this song.

Heather Nova - Walk This World
(Sep 14, 2010 - 13:42)

Doesn't do anything for me ... she is trying to use provocative language to catch attention ... which when done right is smart and clever as anything ( Wynona Big Brown Beaver) for example, however the pause after "I want to come" ... it seems so freaking obvious

Maybe I am jaded - to each his / her own ... I personally will pass on this

Nitin Sawhney - Mausam
(Sep 09, 2010 - 10:13)
simply magic ...

Bruce Cockburn - Night Train
(Aug 31, 2010 - 10:59)
That bass ... that snare ... perfect

Phish - Birds of a Feather
(Jul 01, 2010 - 14:55)
Never got the Hype of Phish or the Greatful Dead - sorry just dont get it ...

Neil Young - When You Dance I Can Really Love
(Feb 04, 2010 - 08:58)

Where do you start with this guy? He keeps shifting and changing what he wants to do - YES! he has slowed in recent years, but my goodness what a collection of music and the styles are so incredibly varied.

I saw him at his Bridge School Benefit - in Mountain View last year - simply amazing and so incredibly diverse...

I remember our walk back from the concert we all started asking ourselves, "Will the stars of today last as long?" Will we see the Jay-Z's and the Kanye Wests still make amazing music into their 60's

Who is current now that you can see still pumping out amazing music at an elderly age?
Beck? Pearl Jam?

They Might Be Giants - Istanbul Not Constantinople
(Jan 27, 2010 - 08:52)
I have to admit - this and their childrens album are the only songs I can listen to from these guys -

Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
(Dec 12, 2009 - 11:31)
They Simply dont make albums like this anymore - this will go down with some of the greatest songs of all time

Devo - Freedom of Choice
(Dec 04, 2009 - 16:18)

I just saw a thing about Devo and Neil Young jamming - it was probably one of the craziest things ... got to love the riff on this with the guitar, the keyboards and the drums oohhhh the drums

who doesnt air band to this?

This would be perfect for Guitar Hero or Rock Band

White Stripes - Seven Nation Army
(Dec 04, 2009 - 12:03)
I have to admit - the video of this captivated me - I was stuck watching it time and time again looking for mistakes - I couldnt believe the work it must have taken to create.

Amazing

The New Pornographers - The Bleeding Heart Show
(Dec 03, 2009 - 13:36)

I think the greatest thing this song does for me is remind my two daughters who were 6 and 4 when this song came out - how they would sing along with it - and when it comes to the "Hey La Hey La" section would break into an almost teleported state jumping around the room - grabbing their toys and making them dance -
Unabashed absolute frenetic childhood energy without worry of appearance or conformity

It was probably one of the greatest moments with my girls - I jumped right in with them and tried to capture whatever they were feeling ... alas I think I only got a part of it

thanks for playing that RP - totally makes me think of my daughters

A Perfect Circle - The Noose
(Dec 03, 2009 - 11:06)

Tool > Perfect Circle > simply amazing music

Few have the ability to put such incredibly powerful thought with equal amounts of powerful music in the same 3 minute package.

The Airborne Toxic Event - Sometime Around Midnight
(Dec 03, 2009 - 11:01)
Brings back thoughts of 80's music - Big sound Anthem like pieces .... I love this song, simply fantastic visuals and thumb tapping all the way.

Matthew Good Band - Strange Days
(Dec 01, 2009 - 10:32)
Good to hear Matthew - Yes his music can be heavy ... but he had some really great songs - Weapon!!!
Thanks RP for playing this

U2 - Red Hill Mining Town
(Sep 22, 2009 - 09:23)
I think its the Strings in the back of this tune (This and One Tree Hill) by I believe the Armin Familiy with Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno that made those songs so strong... even now - so many years later they still leave a mark

So well done

The Tragically Hip - Stay
(Sep 22, 2009 - 09:11)
 andrewimft wrote:

The Hip remind me of Travis, a UK band huge over there that can't get anywhere in the US. Tried to like Travis and can't, I assume Travis taps into the sociocultural vibe in England and makes some statement that fits with the times over there that doesn't translate here, since their music and lyrics are, to my ear, slightly above average. The Hip are more interesting but musically not that much better. There are just some bands that fit into a time and place in a country that evokes something powerful for those who were there, and I assume that's the case for Travis and the Hip. I can't think of an equivalent popular American band that fell flat in Europe but I'm sure there are some examples.

I still like hearing the Hip and Travis on radio & RP just to get a feel for the popular bands in those countries, and they are good enough for a pleasant listen.

As a Canadian - I grew up listening to CONCAN legislated radio (where 30% had to be Canadian content) and hence growing up in the 70's I was inundated with "Wreck of the Edmunds Fitzgerald" and "Snowbird" and the forever scorched into my brain "Clap for the Wolf man" - believe me, they only played maybe four or five artists again and again and again ...

The Hip were different as they talked about Canadian issues, concerns, history - and yet made our feet tap along with the story, something that really hasn't been done before in Canadian rock music.

They aren't as popular as they once were (check Road Apples Album) but they still have a place in our hearts ...

"You said you didn't give a fu*k about Hockey - Never heard anyone say that before"

It's good that there is a distinct difference in thought and feeling in the UK with Travis or the Canadians with the Hip - I want there to be something more to differentiate me from my American brethren than how I say

Pro-cess not Praw-cess

Ray LaMontagne - You Can Bring Me Flowers
(Sep 21, 2009 - 10:34)

Nice to hear real soul music is still alive and kicking ... IMO Soul & RnB has taken a kick in the head in the past few years, taken away from its roots of sadness and love lost to... well... when I was a boy growing up to Otis, Ray, Muddy Waters, BB King and such ... hell even Earth Wind and Fire ... all of it had this sort of touch to it.

I don't hear anything from the "top" RnB or Soul artists that even comes close

Ray is a fantastic element in music today

Talk Talk - Renée
(Sep 17, 2009 - 14:23)
Spirit of Eden was my fav by far - however I also think it was sooo different than everything else at the time - it was the end of them ...  I still chuckle when I hear "Its my life" as it reminds me so much of music videos and my first girlfriend

Bruce Cockburn - Night Train

Info from CD Universe website, pretty reliable.

Bruce is an outstanding acoustic guitar player, one of the best just playing the acoustic guitar. I've seen live acoustic solo, absolutely stunning playing both technically and with feeling.

Bruce is simply amazing - I saw him years ago with just a 12 string at the Stein River festival north of Whistler - he was magical and probably one of the best finger pickers I have ever seen - I remember him doing "Wondering where the Lions are" and the entire crowd singing along under the stars - it was amazing ...

I had no idea the backup group on this song though - holy cow -

Scissor Sisters - Take Your Mama Out
(Aug 26, 2009 - 11:24)
I want to slide in lyrics like - You got to have faith a faith a faith a

54-40 - Casual Viewin'
(Aug 26, 2009 - 11:16)

Kind of sad that 54-40 best songs never caught on in the US - Baby ran was really an anthem for most Canadian teens in the early 80's - It wasnt until Hootie and the Blowfish did a cover of "I Go Blind" that I ever heard any of their music on American stations

Now Bill pulls this one out of the vault - good choice - but Baby Ran is much better
Thanks Bill :){#Bananasplit}

Jill Barber - Oh My My
(Jul 31, 2009 - 22:44)

Oh My My .... (rinse & repeat) until I want to shut the radio off
sorry Bill - Madrugada + RadioHead were amazing - this was a let down of epic scale .... I guess you cant win them all the time

Dolly Parton - Shine
(Jun 08, 2009 - 12:20)
Seems like Dolly is taking a note from Johny Cash and doing remakes to make them hers - I have to admit - she will always be too hill billy for me - but I appreciate her and you have to imagine what kind of Crap she must have put up with trying to make it as a singer

I doubt very much that any female artist now would have to deal with the crap this lady went through to get into the business

sexual harrasment then was just "playing around"

Junkhouse - Shine
(Jun 08, 2009 - 12:17)
The "Best of Junkhouse"??? Were they not a 1 hit wonder? They had this and a great tune called "Out of My Head" that simply kicks ass - However being Canadian Artists - They either make it big down south or - Keep a day job

So Im guessing they are plumbing or doing roofing or drywall work now in Ontario somewhere

too bad - Out of My Head is still one of my all time favs

The Wailin' Jennys - One Voice
(Jun 02, 2009 - 12:33)
This is the result of living in Winnipeg - 6 months of winter, then 6 months of black flies and mosquitos - will force you inside to play music and learn to sing

Martha & the Muffins - Echo Beach
(May 27, 2009 - 08:21)
OK - Love this - totally reminds me of early 80's Canadian Pop music, because of ConCan - 1/3 or Canadian Radio has to be of Canadian content - so - for the longest time all we heard was Edmonds Fitzgerlad and Snowbird and American woman -

When this came out, we had something a little funner, actually hip (for the time) and it was my introduction to Ska in sorts - Martha and the Muffins were a nice fresh change from the 70's music that we were forced to listen to for so very long :)

Thanks RP

The Raconteurs - Top Yourself
(Oct 22, 2008 - 13:03)
Totally felt like it was Zepplin going on here ... very cool

Rachael Yamagata - Duet (w/ Ray LaMontagne)
(Oct 22, 2008 - 08:22)
Wow - goose bumps folks ... even the hairs on my big toe are standing to attention - so very nice

Ennio Morricone - The Good, The Bad & The Ugly
(Oct 21, 2008 - 11:02)
Well folks - have to remember how totally different this was when it first came out - when you listen to it - it does remind me of a mash-up of music ... like sampling but better

Olivia Ruiz - J'traîne Des Pieds
(Oct 13, 2008 - 14:09)
Being Canadian - French music to me was Mitsou and Celine Dion ... Aldo Nova ... so my appreciation to French music was slanted - But!
Olivia Ruiz
Carla Bruni

they changed my mind :)

Silversun Pickups - Three Seed
(Oct 13, 2008 - 13:07)
sounds a lot like Cherub Rock album in a way ... but Hey! love this stuff

Chris Isaak - Two Hearts
(Oct 13, 2008 - 12:55)
Met him in Vancouver when he was filming his TV show ... super relaxed and quite funny guy ... Him and his drummer were at a fish market picking up Crab Cakes for a party ... it was really nice to just hang out waiting for our numbers to be called and shoot the shite ...

His music is pretty relaxing - hitting those high notes freaks me out - but I think hes awesome
Chris Isaak ... you da man!

The Dandy Warhols - Welcome To The Third World
(Oct 09, 2008 - 11:26)
reminds me of Zappa / Tubes / Some Girls Album (Rolling Stones)

Ani DiFranco - Smiling Underneath
(Oct 09, 2008 - 11:20)

I don't know ... I kind of like the fact that she has found love and obviously she sounds happy ... why do we need her angry? I think I like her more now that she has some sort of inner peace within.

I found her ramblings as an angry woman kept me at arms length (as I am a man) I couldn't share in her experiences in her work ... but now that she has mellowed a little ... I can embrace what she is saying that much more, I don't know ... maybe women have the same experience with angry male singers ... that they cant "get" what they are about ... because its foreign to them ...

But we can all understand the feelings that love create, that being in love makes us feel

I am happy for Ani ... I like this stuff

Stone Roses - Fools Gold
(Oct 09, 2008 - 10:36)
How funky these stoners from Manchester are ... what ever happend to these guys?

The Wailin' Jennys - Long Time Traveller
(Oct 08, 2008 - 14:14)
Reminds me of something I would hear in Halifax harbour during the summer ... very nice stuff

Vivaldi - The 4 Seasons: Summer
(Oct 07, 2008 - 10:58)
So incredible ... so perfect ... how many hundreds of years later will people still listen to this in amazment

Erik Satie - Gnossienne No1
(Oct 06, 2008 - 10:26)
Wasnt he only like 22 or 25 when he composed this?
His music is honestly a must - have if you love piano music ... simply magical

They Might Be Giants - Birdhouse In Your Soul
(Sep 26, 2008 - 12:48)

Never got these guys ... simply didnt dig them at all sorry

The Cure - In-Between Days
(Sep 26, 2008 - 12:47)
how can you not love the intro to this song - regardless on how you think the band might be depressing ... that his visuals can be odd ... this song is amazing ... simply amazing

Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me is probably one of my favourite albums of all time ... the Cure was one of the last bands that would extend songs well past radio friendly time ... loved that about them ... its hard to carry emotion and expression in exactly 2 minutes 30 seconds

David Bowie - Heroes (single mix)
(Sep 26, 2008 - 12:45)
Well ... I think this song makes my mind Race of all the events in my life where this tune has played a part ... love it, love his library of work ... it is so incredible to think it has all come from one mans head

Amazing

Feist - I Feel It All
(Sep 26, 2008 - 12:43)
Her voice has a sort of gentle tapping affect ... like rain on the window ...
calm ... gentle ... soft

Love it

Patty Griffin - Long Ride Home
(Sep 23, 2008 - 10:54)
I had to stop my frantic work at my cube and respond to this song - I have lost both of my parents ... I guess it eventually happens to everyone, just this song just rips my heart out listening to it

I know Bill plays it a lot, I know that someone might find it sappy ... I dont know what its like to loose a spouce, I know how my moms passing affected my father, he slipped away so shortly after her passing - mostly from a broken heart.

this song is almost like it was written about him - and it makes my eyes well everytime ... everytime

Johnny Nash - I Can See Clearly Now
(Sep 23, 2008 - 10:43)
Love the note he holds through the bridge ... amazing

The Grapes Of Wrath - All The Things I Wasn't
(Sep 23, 2008 - 10:38)

Youth is wasted on the young :)

Lizz Wright - Hit The Ground
(Sep 23, 2008 - 10:34)
I have to admit ... this is one of the top picks of mine for nookie music ... would totally suggest this added to anyones "selection" of tunes to have playing when you want to get ...uhhh

well ... you know

Taj Mahal - Corinna
(Sep 23, 2008 - 10:18)
Grew up listening to the blues ... reminds me of the rain of the BC coast when I hear this ... listening it to my mom and dads Realistic Sterio System with the Sansui speakers with wooden grill - the crackle of the needle

love this stuff

The Wailin' Jennys - Arlington
(Sep 22, 2008 - 16:34)

Still gives me chills ... I remember the snow falling all around me as I walked to work one very cold Calgary morning, this was in my IPod and it was almost like my stride, the movement of the snow ... all of it was put into perfect unison.

I remember stopping ... just looking around - watching my breath escaping my nose and mouth - creating ripples of steam in the piercing cold air.

I love how music can make me remember things

Israel Kamakawiwo'ole - Ka Huila Wai
(Sep 22, 2008 - 16:30)
I remember listening to him signing "Over the Rainbow" when I held my first born in my arms after her first bath at home. I remember thinking that my life was perfect.

Thanks to his gentle, perfect voice ... it is my daughters favourite tune (shes now 7) and mine too

thanks RP...

Ani Difranco - Amazing Grace
(Sep 22, 2008 - 16:16)

Ani Difranco,
First off - as a male who likes / loves her music ... I have found her going through stages in her life from pure angst and then to abandon to now what almost seems like she has found a level of inner peace.

All done without compromise - without selling herself out

She has been amazing to watch (sometimes almost like watching a car accident) but I have loved the way she has walked the razors edge with her fans (of both sexual orientations) she has done a very savvy job of keeping all interested / all on their toes with (what will be next)

Love it

Cowboy Junkies - Sweet Jane
(Sep 22, 2008 - 15:24)
Margo and the band were never "rockers" they were relaxing music in a sea of sh*t, try to remember it was either Grunge or Shlotzy pop crap at the time ... these guys made dinner music that didnt make you want to shut off the sterio.

I love this album ... very mellow - though listening to the junkies can bring you down, so everything in moderation

English Beat - Mirror In The Bathroom
(Sep 22, 2008 - 15:01)
brings back soooo many thoughts of drinking in basements sneaking my mixed tapes in amoungst the Led Zepplin and Iron Maiden ... ahh being a teen in the 80's

The Tragically Hip - Nautical Disaster
(Sep 22, 2008 - 14:50)

I can remember seeing them perform this song before Day for Night was released ... I remember how frantic they were on stage - how Downie was basically taken by some spirit and was shuffling around the stage as under a spell.

Those from America or the UK may not understand the importance of this band, to as a Canadian... they were really the first band that sounded good - that talked about being Canadian ... putting our lives into lyrics, our surroundings to a beat

Most Canadian artists basically either die off due to limited Canadian Sales (or keep a day job) or they sell out and push themselves to the lucrative American audience (Bryan Adams is a perfect example of that)... not that I don't like him, I just don't think he captured our identity at all.

Though the Hip don't mean as much to me as they did 20 years ago ... they still stand for a part of my identity as a Canadian, I was proud and surprised when I listened to them as a young man, and even now - some of there songs strike a chord with me

Thanks RP for playing that

David Bowie - Ashes To Ashes (Live)
(Aug 12, 2008 - 10:45)
Such an incredible live tune ... so professional its scary ...

David Byrne - Make Believe Mambo
(Aug 07, 2008 - 14:27)
Would love to see a Reality TV show with David Byrne and Bjork working and doing stuff around real people for a living ... could you imagine them both working at a Dairy Queen?

What kind of items would they create to eat? how would they call out your order? what would they wear?

Its too perfect ... thow in Missy Elliot as a guest appearence and you have TV perfection

k.d. lang - Coming Home
(Aug 07, 2008 - 14:12)

I have to admit - I loved her Cow-Punk Stage days with Turnin me Round ... it was simply amazing - she was insaine live ... she seemed to be a mix of Jello Biafra meets Patsy Cline ... it was insaine

I saw her at the Savouy in Vancouver back in the late 80's early 90's and it was earth moving ...

Cloud Cult - When Water Comes to Life
(Aug 07, 2008 - 14:04)

Feminine Protection Ad ... totally makes sense ... all they need is the lyrics to include spring rain

Emerson, Lake and Palmer - Lucky Man
(Aug 04, 2008 - 13:34)

Was this not from Brain Salad Surgery originally? if so - best album cover / concept / design ever done by any band

Ennio Morricone - For A Few Dollars More
(Jul 16, 2008 - 09:58)
how can you not want to ride a horse to this?
Waterboys - Fisherman's Blues
(Jul 07, 2008 - 10:49)
When I am in my car, and this comes on - My thumbs tap along with the beat, and yes! I do the Whoo! when it comes along as well

This is some of the best road trip music ever done.

Love IT
Elvis Costello - 45
(Jul 03, 2008 - 14:53)
Love LOVE the way this song settles down then just POPs and bounces around ...then settles down again

Well done Elvis
Roger McGuinn - King Of The Hill
(Jul 03, 2008 - 14:50)
Is this or is this not Tom Petty?
Who the hell is Roger McGuinn? Like wasnt he like on a 60's band ... the Byrds or something?
Michael Franti and Spearhead - Time to Go Home

Show of Hands - Roots
(Jul 01, 2008 - 17:30)
I kind of like the tune, the lyrics are funny as I think England has been the biggest masters of change across the globe since the days of Queen Victoria and her Golden Age.

Its nice to see that now English are feeling that their culture has changed ... shoes on the other foot

Black Sabbath - Paranoid
(Jun 30, 2008 - 09:10)
Remember all those times as a teen, with your feathered hair and denim jacket and French-cut jeans would say

Man, I don’t ever want to become my parents ...

Well for all of those that speak ill of this song, I want you to reflect on how you sound.

This music is classic! Just because it isn’t some light fluffy music doesn’t take away from the beauty of it. I love the fact that I can listen to the cowboy junkies and Black Sabbath on the same station within 10 minutes of each other

Thank the Gods for the Internet :)

Zero 7 - In the Waiting Line
(Jun 30, 2008 - 08:52)
This album on a winter’s rainy day ... the gray light filling my kitchen as I make coffee and breakfast, the rain tapping against the window as I stood at the sink looking out the window at the fallen fall leaves.

It’s amazing how a song can bring back memories of days gone past...

Fantastic album

Talk Talk - Give It Up
(Jun 16, 2008 - 11:01)
How can you not Love Talk Talk - such a great band - ahhh the memories this creates
Michael Franti and Spearhead - Time to Go Home
(May 30, 2008 - 10:26)
All the Dems sat on there hands and said nothing ALL OF THEM

SHAME SHAME SHAME ... f'n sheep all of them

I voted for it before I voted against it - what the hell is that!!!

Michael has always been on the leading edge since his time with disposable heroes... he has created some of the best poetry I have ever read / heard

He might be on one side of the compass - Orielly and others the other side ... Thank GOD somebody in the USA can call it how it is.

I moved here from Canada and I am amazed on how little American News is of the World, and how slanted the view is. Where is the clinical view? Where is the voice of challenge to authority? What happened to the hippies and how they challenged authority in the 60's and 70's - Did they all sell out? are they all too busy driving the Mercedes Benz to visit the grandkids?

Sorry for the rant - just reading the thread frustrated me a little

I might have called it differently if you'd been laying on your comforter without so much affectation. But, hey, that's just me.

Point taken... guess I was all in that mushy new Love sickness thing (new relationship) ... its all good - Peace

Wow - dont know if telling somebody about someone who died from cancer and sharing a moment listening to music is pretentious..

I was only being honest -
Pretentious is > making claim to or creating an appearance of (often undeserved) importance or distinction

I wasnt claiming anything of importance or undeserved distinction - it was a statement of that when we all die - what do we have to leave behind

Maybe instead of being bitter and negative - try thinking of what you will leave behind when you are food for the worms

Thats what I was trying to point out -
Azam Ali - Abode
(May 12, 2008 - 09:54)
Sounds North African (Egypt - Algerian - Morocco)

I hate to assume but I wonder how negative this sort of music is to the fundamentalist Muslims I know that the Taliban destroyed fountains and artwork in Afghanistan after taking it over as it was found to be against Sharia law.

Does Sharian law allow Music? Art? Dance? Recording Music? Watching Movies? Comedy? Can you tell a joke?

The Dandy Warhols - Godless
(May 12, 2008 - 09:38)
What a great diverse band ...
Spacehog - In The Meantime
(May 12, 2008 - 09:38)
love the dial tone as a rythm piece ... its such a cool thing to find musical beats in the strangest of places - what a great song
Liz Phair - Perfect World
(May 09, 2008 - 12:47)
I think Liz has done some smart marketing to push her sexuality and lyrics that turn heads coming from a woman (HWC) I think she is a great way-point for how we perceive women and sexuality in lyrics in comparison to men.

But I would like to see if she is more than just sexual marketing + half decent song writing

Honestly if a man was to sing songs like she does - would we even take notice?

Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter
(May 09, 2008 - 12:16)
Ok simply put - has to be one of the top 10 best song intros in the world

Who WHO is the goddess who sings backup on this

I get chills everytime I hear her
Donna The Buffalo - If You Only Could
(May 07, 2008 - 10:24)
I see the comments of "its too long" and I think we have bought this idea that a song needs to fit our range of 2-3 minutes in length so we can stuff it between ads for male enhancement drugs and energy drinks.

Try to remember that they are building a landscape of sound - while trying to have fun doing it ... I say go man go, I don’t care for the Grateful Dead, but I understand the primal sort of groove they create with those long extended jams.

There are only a few bands that come to mind that have wonderfully long songs in today’s music marketing world. The Cure's Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me was probably one of the last albums in memory that had songs that just seemed to be jams that eventually added lyrics to them.

Another band is the Stone Roses, however I found that they never really caught on as the Manchester Scene was over before they hit in North America.

Not these guys are Handel or Mozart, but before the advent of radio – songs were created to build a theme regardless of time and format.

Yes - Roundabout
(May 06, 2008 - 09:39)
I forget who it was that was interviewed about playing a concert where YES opened up for them and there was basically silence after they came on because Yes blew them off the stage

Something about the quote was like,"After seeing Yes play it became very clear to me that we actually needed to practice"
Eva Cassidy - Fields of Gold
(May 01, 2008 - 08:23)
I was just playing this for my girlfriend the other day ... she is a big sting fan and at first was mocking it, but we laid there on my duvet listening, quietly listening, I whispered to her about the story of Eva and how she died of cancer - and that she left the world much too early.

I don’t think we moved from that spoon position for about an hour or two … it was a very precious moment and it made me think. That one must remember that so many of us leave this mortal coil without any real record of our being.

Eva left us, but she left something behind that is simply amazing, something to aim for before we all check out – to leave something worth remembering us for.

Thanks RP for playing this

Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill
(May 01, 2008 - 08:16)
Kate is simply amazing - some of her music from hounds of love is probably some of the best collection of sounds, textures, emotions and cultures mixed with incredible eclectic taste.

She was doing stuff that others (male or female) were completely terrified of doing, I think that here and Laurie Anderson, Brian Eno and Kraftwerk will be remembered huge for taking music of the 70’s and 80’s in a very different direction

The Tragically Hip - Fiddlers Green
(Apr 18, 2008 - 09:40)
OH my ... thoughts come rushing in of being at a wake of my childhood friend who died in a car crash in my hometown on the central coast of BC.

We were in the local watering hole, we had all come back from Vancouver and points east to say goodbye to our friend...

I remember driving back that night to Vancouver and didnt want to get out of the car when pulling into the ferry, I was still in my suit and sat in my little Rabbit with this song playing on the deck.

I remember balling my eyes out thinking of him and playing street hockey, kick the can, talking about the girls getting boobs ...

How a song can bring back thoughts - Thanks so very much Bill for that - its almost 15 years ago now.
Secret Machines - Nowhere Again

Bjork should do a reality TV series ... Like the Flavor of Love

Could you imagine the weirdness that would come out of a TV show with Bjork and 12 Bachelors? I would be by far the craziest tv on the planet

She is simply amazing ... I remember her talking about recording bubbling mud in the volcanic areas around her home in Iceland and she turned that into a beat for a song she did

She talked about hearing musical rhythm in everything in the earth around us

Now every time I go to the Copier to get a report I listen to it chug away with this really cool sort of Samba beat as it pushes out the copies... I never would have listened to that if it wasn’t for Bjork

Dengue Fever - One Thousand Tears of a Tarantula
(Feb 14, 2008 - 08:56)
I have to admit ... I learn / hear something new every time I turn on this radio station ... simply awesome

Bill you got the craziest ass play list - I would have loved to see my program director back in the day look at this list, he would have died on the spot.

Thank GOD for internet radio - what a mix
David Byrne
Gorillaz
Dengue Fever
Iron and Wine

Dude - that’s messed up - LOVE IT

Johnny Cash - I'm Leaving Now
(Feb 04, 2008 - 09:28)
who is this singing with Johny? Im sorry to the Country and Western Fans ... Im not up on who is who... all the same this is great stuff... what a great camp fire song
Patty Griffin - Long Ride Home
(Jan 28, 2008 - 13:50)
This song touches me in so many ways; I had this playing after driving back from spreading my Fathers and Mother Ashes off the coastal town where I grew up last spring and I think I played it about 5 times on the 12 hour road trip.

I can remember my father feeling absolutely lost after my mothers passing, the depression and thoughts of remorse for not doing enough for her in her final years, trying to escape his loss by lashing out and blaming others around him.

Its like this song is a song about my parents, I miss them so terribly... they were my best friends and when I hear this I am taken back to when we were trying to help my dad cope with the loss of mom, his wife of over 50 years.

Others might find is mushy or boring, I find it like a musical rendition of my parents life and I cant help but get emotional whenever I hear it

Cake - Mahna Mahna
(Jan 23, 2008 - 15:50)

The Be Good Tanyas - Light Enough to Travel
(Jan 23, 2008 - 14:05)
You have to give props to anyone who has to throw away their accordian so they can get away from the police.

What kind of anarchy does BC have to allow vandals to be walking around with accordians?

what are the mosh-pits in Vancouver like? more like polka-pit

cool - Two stepping in a mosh-pit - I dig it
Bonobo - Between The Lines (feat. Bajka)
(Jan 23, 2008 - 11:09)
Me thinks this album will be mine in the near future ... very cool sound

Bajka is a pretty sweet singer
Gomez - How We Operate
(Jan 23, 2008 - 10:23)
Its the bottled rage in his voice when its quite that makes this such a great song

However I find the start so incredible it ends in a whimper

I can hear sorrow in his voice, it shakes a little ... there is some thought to the lyrics, celtic blues kind of thing going on here... the horns rolling in was a nice touch

Would like to have heard sax and trombone added rather than just all trumpet

That would give it a Van Morrison kind of groove
Nik Kershaw - Wounded
(Jan 22, 2008 - 16:21)
Is this the same Nik Kershaw from "Wouldnt it be good" back in the 80's?
Big Sugar - All Hell For A Basement
(Jan 22, 2008 - 14:54)
I always thought these guys were from TO, Medicine Hat?

Mind you Alberta as red-neck as it is has produced some seriously amazing artists

KD Lang
Jane Arden
Terry Clark
Teagan & Sarah
Big Sugar (more just Gordie Johnson)
Nickleback (Im kinda sick of them though)

Not bad considering the two musical styles there are country and western - Anyone who has been to Stampede will confirm this
Feist - 1234
(Jan 22, 2008 - 14:45)
The video for this is simply brilliant in its complexity and completion

I love Feist, she is simply amazing

The Waterboys - Old England

X - Burning House Of Love
(Jan 22, 2008 - 09:26)
Why does this remind me of background music during an 80's Action film montage? Can you hear this playing in the background while Sylvester Stallone gets into shape for the fight or Steven Segal is looking for the Puerto Rican Drug king-pin in the streets of New York?

Totally can see it … that is great cheesy montage music

The Who - I Can't Explain

8. Leo Kottke
9. Andres Segovia
10. Jeff Beck

Really depends on the type of guitar playing - finger picking isnt included on the list except for maybe Leo Kottke or Knopfler

BBKing is the king of the high E - hes tone deaf, its his band behind him that makes him as good as he is

I would add Robert Frip to your list or Adrian Belew or Richard Thompson or Bruce Cockburn
Yoshida Brothers - Overland Blues

Loreena McKennitt - Kecharitomene

she must have during the Mommers Dance stuff
Led Zeppelin - Kashmir
(Jan 18, 2008 - 11:31)
Oh my what a great couple of songs ... This song will be played for years to come

What a great sound ... I have to admit I was into New Wave as a teen and shunned Led Zeppelin because of the crew that was listening to them dissliked what I listened to

I have a new appreciation for them now more than ever actually ... Fool in the Rain is one of the all time classic jump around while washing dishes songs in my house

thanks bill ... nice work
Cowboy Junkies - A Horse in the Country
(Jan 18, 2008 - 11:00)
Oh how I love these guys ... They can sing anything ... I love the Dinosaur JR remake they did.

Mind you too much of the junkies will result in your brains slipping out your nose

great background dinner music though
Talking Heads - Once In A Lifetime

Ramasutra - Kwaidan
(Jan 17, 2008 - 11:11)
How can you not love taiko drums? If you ever want to see guys with real 6-packs (ladies too) you need to go no further than a Taiko drum troup

I actually remember seeing a guy hitting the big drum (using drum sticks that looked something like sticks of firewood) who had probably an 8 or 10 pack

there is nothing more powerful than a good Taiko drum troop

This song captures a hint of it, I like it ... needs more bass drum though
Meyer, Douglas & Barenberg - From Ankara to Izmir
(Jan 17, 2008 - 10:01)
I cant find this album anywhere ... maybe its been taken off the shelves for the high demand of its graphically stellar cover art
The New Pornographers - Adventures In Solitude
(Jan 17, 2008 - 09:57)
The BareNaked Ladies were nobodies until an official in the Toronto City council banned them from performing because of the name of the band

it was the best marketing they could have ever recieved

The New Pornographers - Adventures In Solitude
(Jan 17, 2008 - 09:55)
I have to admit - they are the best band from Vancouver ever

Oh there have been good ones
But not like this

Even Brian Adams and his Rhyming couplets can’t touch this stuff

As Brian would say,
There was a day, where I ate some hay, then I had to Say, If she comes my Way... I just May eat some Hay

Id eat some Hay
Rinse and Repeat ... make a million

Aaron Copland - Fanfare for the Common Man

I wish I could crack into the PA system here at work and have this going right now ...

So very cool ...

I can remember making breakfast onetime to this and my little daughters dancing around with stuffed animals to it in the morning sun

What a great day that was
The Who - Magic Bus (live)
(Jan 17, 2008 - 09:18)
I have to admit I love this version ... they rock ... very clean ... polished even ... This would have been a great concert what year was it?
Big Joe Turner - Shake, Rattle & Roll
(Jan 14, 2008 - 10:47)
Boogie Woogie Country Girl is my favorite of his... I bounce around like an idiot (and embarrass my daughters quite a bit) when that comes on

Its just such a great tune

The Clash - Clampdown
(Jan 14, 2008 - 10:41)
I can remember listening to this first time ... I remember thinking I have never heard an album like it before in my life

I almost wore this album out
Zero 7 - In the Waiting Line

Ok I know I heard this yesterday ... Bill you got your groove on dont ya?

Very cool

Iggy Pop - Lust for Life
(Jan 11, 2008 - 13:43)
Do you think Carnival knew what this song was about when they purchased the rights? Maybe they did because they knew it would perk our attention

good for them and the marketing people with some balls to step out of the saftey zone

Good for Iggy getting some coin after all the years touring ... enjoy the old age Iggy

Ali Farka Toure & Ry Cooder - Soukora
(Jan 11, 2008 - 13:32)
This is the kind of music you have on in the background ... when wearing your white panama hat surveying your plantation, sipping some alcoholic drink with edible flowers used as a garnish.

Sure beats sitting in my cube looking at a jar of pencils beside the monitor

Diana Krall - Temptation
(Jan 11, 2008 - 13:20)
I have to admit I dont know too many Sexy & Cool folks from Nanaimo, they are either one or the other - not both

Diana certainly has both down in spades

I am amazed by her performances, considering its a little mill town on the coast with no real Jazz music community around it to foster this kind of talent.

Maybe its the laid back lifestyle, the grey skies, the rain ... who knows

Van Morrison - Tupelo Honey
(Jan 11, 2008 - 13:01)
How good is Van Morrison? Think of this and his remake of Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd and I am at a loss for words at such a talent

Santana - Put Your Lights On (feat Everlast)
(Jan 11, 2008 - 11:26)
I wonder what kind of financial problems Santana was in to do all that duet work, mind you Franky started that bloody trend

I vomit in my mouth everytime I hear Mack the Knife with Franky and Jimmy Buffett.

all the same, Santana is a legand, and hes trying to capture a new younger audience with his music partnering with todays artists

I can totally see the money reasons for doing this, but its certainly not black magic woman
Johnny Cash - Hurt
(Jan 11, 2008 - 11:21)
Trent and the NIN crew must be so proud that something they made that started as an angry statement lashing out at the world

That song was taken by someone looking back at his life, knowing what good and bad that he had done, getting ready for the final letting go.

Johnny Cash's video for this song is nothing short of perfect, I am moved every time I hear this song, I only wish I can produce something that stands as a record of my life like Johnny did with the video of this song

So powerful ... wondrous

Rob Costlow - Woods of Chaos

Holy George Winston Batman ..
Jane Siberry - Everything Reminds Me of My Dog
(Jan 11, 2008 - 10:05)
Jane Siberry - Oh my ... Map of the World and all that crimped hair and messed up 80's clothes

Mimmi on the Beach ... flashback to me being 16

she had her moments, I believe her song Calling All Angels on soundtrack Pay it Forward was probably her highest point

Interesting hearing her again
Richard Thompson - Sibella
(Jan 11, 2008 - 09:46)
I have to admit, his "Vincent Black Lightning 1952" is probably one of my favs as songs goes... its an amazing work

I like his other stuff, but the vincent song blows me away

this is good - like the other posts, his voice seems so incredibly strong ... great stuff
The Pierces - Secret
(Jan 11, 2008 - 09:41)
not digging it ... the whole thing doesnt fit my vibe right now, for some reason it has like some sort of 50's French thing to it ... sorry Bill, Im not digging it at all
Sufjan Stevens - Casimir Pulaski Day
(Jan 10, 2008 - 16:06)
I remember a girl I was crazy about as a young boy (age 13 or 14) and I found out she had CF, and what that meant.

I always thought she had asthma or something like allergies or something... I remember sitting beside her at the government wharf looking out towards Vancouver Island as her parents were pulling the boat onto the trailer at the boat launch.

I wanted to ask her "are you scared?" I wanted to ask her "If I could kiss her"

She died the next summer after spending most of the time in and out of Children’s Hospital in Vancouver

I haven’t thought of her for years until I just heard this song.

Thank you for that...
I have to go wash my face, hide what’s running down my cheeks

Zero 7 - In the Waiting Line
(Jan 10, 2008 - 11:57)
Tina makes me feel all squishy inside... Wow

RP - I have told so many people about this station... what a great introduction to fantastic music like this

Rodrigo y Gabriela - Stairway to Heaven

perfect remake
Tom Waits - Chocolate Jesus
(Jan 08, 2008 - 14:04)
but if you nibble off his ears first ... do you burn in hell?
The The - This Is The Day
(Jan 08, 2008 - 10:34)
How can you NOT love this? the simple beat machine reminds me of an earlier time in Techno music. The The was an amazing band and this album

is my absolute favourite ... I can remember playing Soul Mining over and over again ... Chanting along with the tribal beat

Simply amazing work
Ani Difranco - 32 Flavors
(Dec 28, 2007 - 10:53)
She needs to be commended on just how she did it her way, I only wish all of us had that trust in our abilities and talent.

she is amazing
Arctic Monkeys - Fluorescent Adolescent
(Dec 28, 2007 - 09:27)
Simply love these guys... so cool... I was amazed when I finally saw them interviewed on CBC; I was so surprised they look like they need their mom and dads permission to go out and play a gig
The Pretenders - Middle Of The Road
(Dec 21, 2007 - 13:20)
The guitar in this is magical... I can remember hearing this first time and thought

how very very cool ... and so nice to here a woman singing with some balls (have to remember all the girl bands back then in New Wave were far from radio play)

It had a grit to it that made it stand out then - it stands out now
Big Sugar - All Over Now
(Dec 11, 2007 - 10:22)
Probably one of Canadas best exports (especially in the blues) They were great to see live lots of great slide guitar and funky bass
Calexico - Close Behind

How can you not love this ... reminds me of like late 60's westerns or something

very cool retro kinda groove

Depeche Mode - Strangelove
(Dec 10, 2007 - 09:27)
The club was Loveafair in Vancouver BC, I was dancing out on the floor by myself and this came on and the crowd filled the dance floor. I remember this beautiful woman (like super model kind of beautiful) came up to me and we started dancing very provocatively, it was almost like a primal moment that you would read about when people go into a trance.

I remember that she had the greatest smile on her face, she was so happy and it was obvious she was having a great time (if it was drug induced I have no idea)

When the song ended her boyfriend came, the guy looked like the statue of David except with a tan, His glare at me was something to behold, there was no way in hell that a woman like her would have ever talked to a guy like me in the real world.

They marched off with her eyes locked on mine until they disappeared into the crowd and I never saw her again, man here I am in my cube writing this smiling thinking that was my moment and I let it slip, its funny how music can trigger memory banks that have laid dormant for so long.

Thanks, Ok Back to work

Soggy Bottom Boys - I Am A Man Of Constant Sorrow
(Dec 06, 2007 - 16:25)
This movie changed how I look and thought about George Clooney ... he was simply amazing in this

The Cohen bros did an amazing job putting the love of the south, blue grass and Greek mythology into a wondrous and beautiful classic movie.

It’s really interesting how I grew to respect and appreciate the southern US (especially the blue grass music scene) from this one movie and soundtrack.

Hey remember when you were a teen and you said to your friends,"I will never become someone like my parents"

guess what...

Its that crazy rock and roll stuff thats leading our kids to ruin and sex and violence

or is it Canada? maybe both

I hear what you are saying, it maybe not what you are into... but I think this music is classic, fantastic stuff that makes the blood pump and I dont know one guy who hasnt done the air guitar or air drums to this song

Bill back me up here... where you doing power chords while listening to this?
Robert Plant - Big Log
(Dec 05, 2007 - 08:40)
I remember thinking of him as "Just" Led Zepplin stuff... I remember this album being released and I thought "Wow - hes good" this album really changed my perceptions on Robert Plant ... this and the Honeydrippers work was sure a depature from the Led Zep stuff of old

The Decemberists - The Perfect Crime #2
(Nov 30, 2007 - 11:24)
sorry one more "perfect" please ... Im not sure what kind of crime it was

Man ... Please dont play that again
George Winston - Spanish Caravan
(Nov 30, 2007 - 11:14)

this was nice... thanks RP

He has a "best of" which has alot of stealing fire plus his earlier stuff ...

He is probably one of the best finger pickers around... I remember seeing him at the Stein River Frestival years ago ... I remember being in absolute awe

Him and a 12 string... simply amazing
Mike Doughty - Ossining
(Nov 30, 2007 - 08:54)
Something about his voice ... totally works for me ... driving beat without the Bryan Adams rhyming couplets or the Chad Kruger (we Canadians have a monopoly on the Rhyming couplet rock thing)

I like it… he sounds flat at first then you realize it works … very cool sound

The Dandy Warhols - Godless
(Nov 29, 2007 - 09:09)
what a great tune

Patty Griffin - Burgundy Shoes
(Nov 29, 2007 - 08:58)
Its not just her voice... its not just the production ... its how she sculpts the song and when I close my eyes I can see the story she is singing about ...

Who didn’t look at their parent at one time or another in amazement as a child...

God I hope I have done a good enough job as a Dad that my girls think of me that way

Beautiful

Placebo - This Picture
(Nov 29, 2007 - 08:26)
I hear Rush in his voice... am I the only one?
Gordon Lightfoot - The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald
(Nov 28, 2007 - 09:33)
Gordon is the KING of the minor chord ... back in the day ... Canadian radio stations are forced by law to play 1/3 Canadian content ... so back in the seventies this was well overplayed on my hometown AM radio station (this and Ann Murray)

Great tune though
Don Henley - The Boys of Summer
(Nov 26, 2007 - 11:51)
I did not like the Eagles especially the Miami Vice smugglers blues crap. But I have mellowed or something with age... I can now tolerate this

Maybe I get it now? Maybe its just that much better than most of the crap on radio now

Don I think was the most talented from the Eagles... I have to admit this song is very clean and well produced

I give it a 5
Waterboys - Fisherman's Blues
(Nov 26, 2007 - 11:29)
One of the classics ... this will be played for years to come ... some of the best travelling music around ...

I can remember playing this in a car heading out to the Okanagan from Vancouver one summers day... the windows open the air rushing in.. my thumbs tapping thing wheel

it was a magical time

thanks for reminding me of that RP

(Nov 26, 2007 - 11:27)
What a great tune ... very clean sound... nice choice
Erik Satie - Gnossienne No1
(Nov 26, 2007 - 10:50)
Wasnt he like 22 when he composed this or something? I remember reading somewhere he was like a young man when he did his best work
Yello - The Rhythm Divine
(Nov 26, 2007 - 10:45)
Shirley Bassey has a voice that just doesn’t exist anymore ... I can’t stop but think of that way she sang "Gold-Fin-Ga" and how powerful and sexy it is

She doesn’t need to run the scale like these pop stars of today, like some bastardization of a choir gone bad in a southern Baptist church where they all try to out scream each other

She just grabs you by the scruff of your neck and throws you around the room

Total power - total class -

I love this

Manu Chao - Rainin in Paradize
(Nov 26, 2007 - 10:18)
sounded kinda like Tom Petty
Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out
(Nov 21, 2007 - 12:49)
Love the way it transitions at the beginning ... my four year old flips out when she hears this and starts marching like a robot around the front room - its soooo cool to see my kids dig my music

sorry raffy
Yoshida Brothers - Storm
(Nov 21, 2007 - 12:24)
I love this except for the part where they are doing a sort of Mission impossible theme thing ... but the right after that they go into a really cool lick and back to the main riff

very cool - My little girls love it and I have to admit I do too
Silversun Pickups - Three Seed
(Nov 21, 2007 - 11:34)
Funny that people have heard other bands besides the obvious Smashing Pumpkins

I love this stuff... maybe because what they have been influenced by is exactly what I was influenced by as well

Cure, Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth etc...

It has a great sound... but time will tell if its worth listening too years from now

ZZ Top - La Grange
(Oct 17, 2007 - 07:37)
Funny, I remember going to my first strip club as a young man with a mob of friends from my Rugby club / soccer club celebrating my 19th Birthday

For those who like that sort of thing Vancouver BC has probably the best places for it on the planet (not that I go around judging)

This music was playing and an Amazon who looked like a cowgirl (strange enough) was doing about Mach 2 on the pole with her legs horizontal with heels that just clipped my buddies head

It was such a fun stupid youthful time ... I gained an appreciation for red velvet walls and draft beer that night

Specials - Ghost Town
(Oct 16, 2007 - 14:59)
Have to remember they were signing about England in the harsh decline of the late 70's early 80's when it’s manufacturing and industrial centers were basically collapsing under competition.

I remember listening to this and the Clash and Sex Pistols, XTC, Jam, Elvis Costello ... they all had something to say about that time

Interesting to listen to it again now.

Devo - Beautiful World
(Oct 15, 2007 - 12:59)
I was like in Grade 6 or 7 when they came out and I remember seeing a spot about them in Life Magazine with information on the Talking Heads, Joe Jackson and a few other bands that were rattling the cages of the music scene at the time.

I grew up in an isolated fishing & logging town on the West Coast of Canada and had limited exposure to media and music except for "Brave New Waves" a CBC late night radio show that would play music like this and obscure music from Europe and Eastern Canada.

I fell in love with this music then, Gary Numan, Devo, Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark and the list goes on.

Thanks for the great memories RP, Maybe RP can be that igniter of imagination and exposure to new sounds and music that Brave New Waves was to us all huddled around the stereo listening to sounds from the outside world.

Toots & The Maytals - Take Me Home, Country Roads
(Oct 05, 2007 - 13:37)
Why is it I dig this ... It feels warmer to me than the John Denver version maybe its the vision of green lush Jamaican country roads

I like it... I could see my mom (little church lady) digging this ... totally

She would have loved this tune

War - Low Rider
(Oct 05, 2007 - 10:48)
It reminds me of a video I did as a student in a media class where I had my small Jack Russell walking around with some big dogs

I used this as a soundtrack ... it was a very fun project

All the same this song totally reminds me of Cheech and Chong and growing up in the 70's

Very fun music - very funky
The Smiths - What Difference Does It Make?
(Oct 04, 2007 - 10:51)
I’m not sure what the heck Country music has anything to do with the Smiths...

But, there is a connection on singing about dark / ugly subjects

Country (honky-tonk) in particular does speak quite a bit about being left behind, loosing a love, and getting drunk to remove the pain of loss

- That does connect quite a bit with the Smiths

Saying that American made country is a bit of stretch but it does have a huge influence on it, I would say that its the petry dish that connected the Celtic, Hispanic and other types of folk music into what country is

If you can say "Country" as a type of music, that’s like saying "Rock" ... there is about a million types of music that falls under the banner

Interesting ... I never thought about the Smiths and country music having a similar vein until now.

Radio Citizen (feat. Bajka) - The Hop

or is it Phat? Im not sure anymore

My Giggy quota is quite low
Eagles - Seven Bridges Road

Im not an Eagles fan ... but the singing in this song is very tight

very nice

I would totally recommend that if you have that crappy kids music that you for some reason were drawn to like a lemming that you recycle it all into something neat (cd-mobile is nice)

And play this music for your kids ... I have a 6 year old and 4 year old that jump around (pogo style) to this stuff like they are crazed ... I think I enjoy it even more seeing how my little ones react to this stuff

Somebody has to make a cd-collection of good music for kids

Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter - The Dreaming Dead
(Sep 21, 2007 - 12:47)
Is this like a 60's 70's tune that has been redone or something?

Totally reminds me of Jefferson Airplane /Starship Red Octopus album

pretty cool stuff ... little too hippie ... but cool

The Sisters of Mercy - More
(Sep 19, 2007 - 08:13)
all of a sudden I had my Fluevog shoes on and black trenchcoat again

Dave Brubeck Quartet - Blue Rondo a la Turk
(Aug 28, 2007 - 12:18)
Not knowing Dave Brubeck isnt the end of the World... and I love the letter about not knowing this until listening to RP.

I have to admit Jazz isnt my number 1 listening resource, but I love it for background music during a dinner party or for cold winter mornings with the fireplace roaring.

Eddie Harris, Dave Brubeck, Charlie Parker and many many more will never really get airtime in todays commercial radio.

Not unless you listen to a specialty Jazz show on a Sunday morning or something...

Thank you for you great note about learning about Dave .. and thanks to RP for playing

I find this to be a very brave song. I'm American, so I don't have "English pride" but I do know that in todays world if a (white) person expresses any pride whatsoever in having anglo roots, that person is branded a racist. As if the only "valid" race worth valuing is ......some one else's race. I am not a racist, my race is not any "better" than yours, but I AM proud of my roots.

I don’t get the sense that it’s racist at all.... and anyone having pride in their cultural roots (be it white, black, pink or orange) is a good thing.

I do however think that the English are getting a little Karma slap on the as* for what they did to hundreds of cultures that they affected on the colonial conquests of two hundred plus years.

I don’t know ... I will take baseball caps and rap music any day of residential schools and forcing indigenous people to not speak their language or culture (because it’s not British)

Try finding a first nations person now in North America who can speak the native tongue – Let alone find a first nation person in most of the US

Can’t blame it all on the Brits though... France, Spain & England all had a role that is for sure

Patty Griffin - Heavenly Day
(Aug 01, 2007 - 12:25)
Patty is probably one of the most pure voices I have heard in a long time.

My parents are both gone now... and I was listening to her song "Long Ride Home" and I physically lost it and had to pull the car over to sob and cry like a mad man.

It was like I was listening to my parents talking from the grave ... it hit close to home for me and even now when I hear the song I have to look for tissue

Patty... RP .... thanks so much for introducing me to her music and the words that so magically come together in her music... so incredibly powerful
Kate Bush - Army Dreamers
(Aug 01, 2007 - 12:21)
I would let Kate have her way with me... I think it stems from her Babushka video

Kate ... I will allow you to have me as your kept man

its the sacrifice I will make

every now and then you have to step into a fastball to advance the runner
The Smiths - Bigmouth Strikes Again
(Aug 01, 2007 - 10:10)
It was the late 80's when I heard this for the first time and I can clearly remember the hairs on my neck when Johny started kicking it with the guitar.

It was such a dark album... so full of teen angst

All done to a catchy beat - thumbs tapping the steering wheel of your car kind of music.

Those were the days ... when alternative music had something to offer... maybe Im just old and jaded now ... I find it all too poppy now

Punk Pop - stuff... Music seems so calculated for greatest cross-over margins and profitability now - not to convey a message or rile up the masses for change to the system.

Yah... I'm old
Silversun Pickups - Lazy Eye
(Jul 31, 2007 - 09:36)
there is a point in this song that hits you with a wall of sound and fury that is something to behold. Yes I hear influences from Pixies and Smashing Pumpkins

But you know .... thats ok ... it shows these guys have taste

Love this and it shows RP is well ahead of the bell curve as I am just now hearing this on Top40 radio

long after I heard this on RP
Show of Hands - Roots
(Jul 31, 2007 - 08:58)
Funny to hear Brits complaining about how other cultures are affecting their way of life and culture.

Holy Hypocrisy Batman! That’s more than the Pot Calling the Kettle Black ... I can’t think a metaphor that’s even close

Ok - Maybe the Irish complaining about Immigration to Ireland from West Africa is probably close

Talk to the First Nations of America about the effect of forced culture change, or India, or anywhere that the freaking Union Jack was planted.

Good to see the UK take a little influence from other cultures... maybe they might adopt dental hygiene.

I know.. I know ... it’s a long step forward ... but who knows...

I get what the band is saying... but I find it funny coming from the country that has done more to force its will and belief systems on others. Being Canadian … we live next to a giant that forces its will on us daily … one of our most colourful Prime Ministers once said living next to the US was like sleeping next to an Elephant …

Brits should be aware of their glorious culture and accept others … and learn that underneath all the glitz and glamour of other cultures … one must have understanding and appreciation of you own.

Rush - Subdivisions
(Jun 18, 2007 - 13:06)
How can you not do air drumming to this stuff?
RUSH is amazing (early stuff more than newer)

For three men - they probably are the tightest band or one of the top three I have ever seen live in my life

Others for consideration as the tightest band alive
NoMeansNo
SimplyRed
Yes
FishBone

Thank you for making my feet tap and thumbs punch my keyboard with a little more vigor RP

:)
The The - Uncertain Smile (remix)
(Jun 15, 2007 - 12:55)
Soul Mining was for a time was THE album for me... I can clearly remember wearing it out

Thanks for this Bill ... makes me remember a time when I was much younger
Rabbi Shergill - Bulla Ki Jana
(May 28, 2007 - 09:35)
I have to admit when I heard this I wanted to say some stupid remark on what he is saying ... something about IED's or goats or something to be a dink.

After reading the lyrics I feel horrible for even thinking that sort of thing

Thanks RP for keeping me from straying the path of acceptance and understanding ... its amazing how music can build bridges ... All I see in the media of the Middle East is sooo negative

This sort of music (when we understand the lyrics) is vital to changing perceptions.

Nitin Sawhney - Mausam

Talking Heads - Burning Down The House
(May 16, 2007 - 07:02)
I wouldnt say it sucks (like some have stated) but it is dated now ... I can remember dancing to this like a fool 20+ years ago

It may not be a classic for all time, but the Talking Heads did certainly shake up the music industry ... they werent created by a faceless record label or music producer - they were just a good band that stood out.

Hard to find the diamonds in the rough now... thanks to RP we at least have some idea of the type of indie music thats out there that is half decent

(Well until the royalties go up so we are force fed more crap from K-Fed and J-Z)

Maybe Jim should just move to Canada - run it from there ... or go pirate put it on a boat somewhere like the radio stations in the 70's used to do in the UK
Poe - Terrible Thought
(May 09, 2007 - 14:52)
Chrissy Hynde lives again ... at least she isnt singing another rendition of Ohio or Working on a Chain Gang.

Seriously I thought this was Chrissy for the longest time until I looked at my WinAmp and it said "Poe"

Wow...
Chemical Brothers - Let Forever Be
(May 09, 2007 - 14:48)
If you cant dig that bass line and that drum loop... you have no happy bones in your body. I dont care who you are.... if you cant slap your thumbs to the steering wheel listening to this you have no soul.

So very very cool

How come nothing off of "Save This House" is on the RP playlist?

I would have thought that the title track as well as "Home for a rest" would have been shoo-ins...

That said, this is a great, great track off a very strong album.

I would agree ... anyone who has seen the SOTW playing "Home for a Rest" live would certainly have a different opinion of the band. I am surprised on the poor response this band has been getting from the reviews. They are / were an amazing band in their day.
k.d. lang - Save Me
(May 07, 2007 - 14:29)
I can clearly remember her in her cow-punk "turn me round" days ... playing this wierd ska-country music and jumping around like a nut-case.

She was amazing to watch.. her energy was something to behold... even in all the brash noise and chaos of those late 80's

This album, IMO is probably one of the best vocal albums in history.. simply put KD has probably one of the best voices in music

Hands down... I heard her do Constant Craving live and it raised the hair on the back of my neck. She is probably the best export out of Alberta ... except for all the Mad Cows
Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)
(May 02, 2007 - 08:23)
as much as I dont want to like them ... I have to admit this song rocks

These guys and the new pornographers are really the best exports out of Canada for sometime

Jeff Buckley - Lilac Wine
(Apr 26, 2007 - 14:45)
Do you think he listens to Queen?
Nouvelle Vague - Blue Monday
(Apr 26, 2007 - 13:36)
Samba ... Samba ... Love it

Brightens up the whole Manchester feel quite a bit
Love it
The Bad Plus - Flim
(Apr 23, 2007 - 06:59)
Oh MY GOD that drumming is sick ... You have to wonder how much red bull one must drink to reach that level ...

Who is the drummer from this band? OH MY!!!
Johnny Nash - I Can See Clearly Now
(Apr 23, 2007 - 05:41)
I dont know anyone except a Opera star that can hold a note for that many bars...

count them out ... I would black out trying to hold a note that long

truly a great singer ... and a very nice bubbly song to boot ...
The Grapes Of Wrath - All The Things I Wasn't
(Apr 23, 2007 - 05:38)
These guys were the "It" band for a few years back in the late 80's early 90's in Vancouver ... there was huge hopes for them ... they sort of never really took off though.

I believe one went off to work for Network records, another went off to play for Sarah (keyboards I believe) ... All the same they captured that folkie hippie vibe that was Vancouver back then

Grapes of Wrath, 54-40, Sons of Freedom, Spirit of the West ...

Ahh those were the days ... to be young and stupid living in the Wet Coast
Euphoria - Blue
(Apr 01, 2007 - 09:04)
I do remember a big burly guy I worked with that was totally macho and would brag about conquests and all. I can remember him rambling to us all at lunch time how he wanted to de-flower that girl from that band Hanson - that lead singer

I am chuckling even now as I type this as I can remember all 30 of us laughing and screaming so hard on his realization that he was actually talking about a boy.

Mind you now that I have thoughts of Tina Dico... I dont want to be thinking of Home Alone at the same time.

Way to go for messing with my head

Electric Light Orchestra - Fire On High
(Mar 30, 2007 - 10:08)
I believe ELO was the first Band to be caught doing Lip Sync in concert ... can anyone remember that?
Cake - Comfort Eagle
(Mar 30, 2007 - 09:56)
Very cool ... He totally reminds me of Lou Reed (If Lou wasnt soo freaking NY Cool... this is like Lou's funky SanFran cousin

I love the groove and Lyrics
Aaron Copland - Fanfare for the Common Man
(Mar 24, 2007 - 07:25)
I dont know if I want to run a race or light a flame ... or throw christians to the lions

so many choices
Euphoria - Blue
(Mar 13, 2007 - 11:16)
Tina,
Tina makes me feel like all squishy... I have to admit, Tina if you read this post... I will actually submit to your advances and allow you to have me.

Phish - First Tube
(Mar 13, 2007 - 09:09)
Havent ever been a huge Phish fan... I found them to be a young version of the grateful dead in many ways.

But, saying that ... this is blowing me away... this is a great jam

fantastic work RP for changing my mind on a band by playing something I would have never heard on radio anywhere else.
The Real Tuesday Weld - Turn on the Sun Again
(Mar 12, 2007 - 10:07)
Yo La Tengo has done this sort of vibe for years ... dont know if I dig this or not

Ok I guess
Talk Talk - Eden
(Mar 08, 2007 - 17:13)
This album was the end of Talk Talk ... it was a complete dud when released ... and it is a combination of chaos and beauty

some songs are smooth like a silk scarf wrapping around your body ... pulling away gently

Some songs are like a chaotic rage of guitar drums and keyboards

I love listening to this album (I am not sure but I think its out of print now)This is one of my all time favourite albums

it captured my moods as a young man

Carbon Leaf - The War Was In Color
(Mar 08, 2007 - 07:06)

I would like to hear more fathers / grandfathers tell there boys about war and how it wasn’t a nice place.

My Grandfather lied about his age and joined the CEF (Canadian Expeditionary Force) to fight in WW1 - at 16 years of age he was in the Somme, Corselet & Vimy (These for those that don’t know were absolutely horrific battles - some of the worst in human times)

When he came back to Canada he told my Father and my uncle, "When war comes again - neither of you will be grunts - One of you will go Navy, One will go Air force"

Sure enough - My father served from 41 to 45 in the North Atlantic in a corvette chasing subs, my Uncle served and survived the war as a bombardier fighting out of England.

My Father and Uncle were both dramatically affected from the war; both told their children of the horrors of war, what they experienced, what they saw happen to their friends.

Wilfred Owen said it best;

My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est Pro patria mori.

Björk - Bachelorette
(Mar 08, 2007 - 06:46)
I would like to see Bjork do a Bachelorette TV reality show... with like here and a whole bunch of guys ...

Her on like this little island up in Iceland or something ... the guys all getting boated in for the competition

I think it would be better than anything that Falvor Flav could ever think up

Ahhhh Bjork why are you not doing reality tv?
Radiohead - Everything in its Right Place

Love this stuff... this isnt something you listen to at a party, this is something you listen to when your being reflective, thinking, listening, open to new sounds, textures, tempo

It is simply magnificent music

Midnight Oil - Beds Are Burning
(Mar 01, 2007 - 09:19)
I saw them with the house of freaks in the Orpheum in Vancouver; it must have been late 80's

The sound for anyone that has been to the Orpheum is second to none, the sounds they produced some of most crystal clear harmonies and arrangements I have ever heard.

It was nice to hear political messages, with a great beat and catchy chorus. Something that really has vanished from pop music today...

After the concert Midnight Oil traveled to Vancouver Island to show support for a blockade trying to stop clear-cutting over near Tofino... I remember thinking... isn’t it nice to see people put their money where their mouth is and not only preach change... but show up on the front lines as well.

Even though my family comes from logging and forestry, I may have some disagreement with some eco-Nazi tactics... I appreciate and respect this band not only for its political stance, but its dedication and absolute musical talent.

Gary Numan - Cars

New Waves Grand Daddy... I hear Gary's beats in almost every hip-hop library

The hooks he created using synths are equal too Kraftwerk and the music holds it own. True origional using organic and technology like this

Moog Synths in Brain Salad Surgery (ELP) Kraftwerk (Trans Europe Express) and Gary Numan (Pleasure Principle) ... the best ever
Natalie MacMaster - Flamenco Fling Reel for Brenda

She is too cutsey and too Canadian Content for me... the whole Celtic thing from the east coast is done for me. Not to take away from her talents but to be honest the Canadian Content laws is what makes people like this exist.

If those content laws werent around... she would be playing pubs and kitchen parties...

Natalie and her cousin Ashley MacIsaac can do some pretty impressive fiddle work but to be honest its all like British Cooking to me

No Spice, Bland and Over Done

I met him on a ferry between Vancouver & Victoria back in 2004... I was in my suit and looked the total business man, he was sitting outside on the deck in his bare feet and walked up to him and started to thank him for his work.

He looked a little stunned that a guy in a business suit would be talking about the disposable heroes and his poetry... but I mentioned to him that when I was teaching Internet & Media to students at BCIT that I used to use one of his lines in class,

"We are living in a time where Straight teeth in your mouth are more important than the words that come out of it."

that was a good day... You dont always get to meet your mentors... I met one of mine. :)

A woman doing music like this was simply unheard of. Not to mention she was simply perfect to look at as well.

Yes her music is different... but that is what I think attracted me to it all those years ago

....on music as YOU know it? The challenge that I have with your statement is the lack of recognition of the antecedents to those albums that you mention. We can all nominate the five most influential albums, but where do you begin and where do you end?

Aren't all your artists caucasian? Can we really say that Chuck Berry or ( insert name of any noteworthy artist - black or white - that you havent mentioned who pre dates the artists that you mention> didnt influence their successors? There is a line in the film The Commitments where one character says

'Who are your influences?"

Did the artists that you mention spontaneously invent new directions, or is all music necessarily derivative of what came before? I have London Calling on a 12" single and the LPs scattered on the floor around the record player suggest that the Clash acknowledged a debt to The Beatles, The Sex Pistols, Elvis Presley and Bob Dylan.

Fair enough ... add Buddy Holy, Robert Johnson, BB King, Bob Marley & Toots and the Mayhals... Sam Cooke... they all had influences on the influencers (does that sound right?)

Just because the artists I pulled out of my hat are White doesnt take away from the fact that those five albums I mentioned did change how we looked and listend to music...

To say that these albums are not creditable because they came after someone else is silly...

Yes you have a point that someone gave these guys the idea... but the result was pure perfection

This album is probably one of the biggest steps forward in music history...

Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run

Pink Floyd - The Wall

These albums are probably had the biggest effect on music as we know it

I've lived in Quebec all my life. Never experienced Nazism, but know what it is and it certainly doesn't apply to a democratic state that passes voted laws to preserve cultural identity while promoting openly immigration. Yes there are separatists and xenophobes in Quebec as elsewhere but obviously the two figures don't match as we can all read from your post. Or maybe you include the hicks from On an NY as you seem to like 'em too. I have friends who had bad rejections experiences living in Alberta or LA. That's it, maybe LA is a NAZI spot. Come on. I'm not even a separatist myself for the simple reason I don't like political boundaries.

Well as I come from Quebec stock... I wouldnt say Quebec as a whole is racist... but lets be honest nowhere in North America could a politician get away with what Parizeau said back in 95

"What did we loose to? Big Money and the ethnic vote"

The real scary thing wasnt that he said it, it was the crowd cheered when he did.

Crikey if that isnt close to outright racisim I dont know what is ....

That being said ... dont know if Arcade Fire or any other Quebec band should be painted with the same brush. Dont think this is the place to discuss Quebec and racism ... Arcade fire, Sam Roberts... there is so much talent from Quebec is amazing

Its not as naisal sounding as some asian singers have or shrilly like Indian singers can be.

This has some style to it and is taking a page out of Robert Fripp or Brian Eno in a way... I like it

Really it was the first music (I can remember) where I saw Blacks and Whites playing together... sharing in the experience, not one group trying to fit into the others group. It took influences from Jamaican dance hall & toasting ... and mixed it with energy of punk rock. I love it

They came from some of the poorest streets of England; they came from nothing to be where they are today....

What’s the story Morning Glory is still one of the best rock songs of all time...

Yes they brothers are dinks... and they have let it all go to there heads... but you know what if I came from nothing to where they are... I would be probably be as proud of myself and my accomplishments as they are.

They deserve to have a large ego... they worked for it. Where they fall short is showing class about it, just as rappers that have come from the hard streets of the USA still appear to me to be nothing more than thugs even though they have everything in the World.

The Beatles - Within You Without You/Tomorrow Never Knows

I have to admit ... first time I heard this I thought "Oh My" and then I looked at the big hair bands that were popular at the time and thought "They will all be forgotten from this time on"

This album is IMO as important as London Calling, White Album, The Wall or The Unforgettable Fire.

It will be listened to and copied for years to come.

Long ago when I was a young man I fell madly in love with a girl that this song reminds me of completely. She was a beauty that I had never known before; she made me feel safe and strong all at the same time. Her ways brought me from a dark place to somewhere where I had never been before

Her Red flowing Hair and smile and her bubbly way of speaking and living was something so attractive - so seductive.

She will be in my head forever... tucked away in a little place where I keep special memories, special moments that nobody can take away from me.

Thank you for playing this tune... it gave me another reminder of how lucky I was to know her - to be with her.

Maybe because there is no lyrics ... like most french I get along great with them until they open there mouths

Grateful Dead - Casey Jones

Please for the love of things holy and pure ... make it stop

I know all of NoCal is dancing like fir trees in the wind to this crap... but the rest of us need reprise from this Hippie crap

cut your hair and get a job
Talk Talk - I Believe In You
(Jul 26, 2006 - 10:21)
Unfortunately I believe this album was there death knell... as they went from "Its My Life" and the Techno Pop ... to this introspective and very organic / ambient album which I dont think the techno-pop crowd would listen too and radio would never play.

Considering anything else at its time this album reminded me of Robert Frip or Brian Eno or David Byrne - Maybe even Japan.

I remember hearing that it was conceived completely by improv playing and then mastered later... I am not sure if this is true (studio costs would be way too large for any label to cover)

Wonderful album... hard to find in print...

I am so happy that RP gives this album some air play... even though I believe spirit is probably the best song on the album.

Boards of Canada - Aquarius

What the? .... Huh ..... Uhhhh ..... ummmm .... Just a thought here... What the hell is going on?

What does this mean? This shite is messed up... Does Yoko Ono have anything to do with this project?

Italians are just like the french except they rolled over a little later in the game.

Well actually Italians are like the french but have more Moor blood in them (see the movie true romance for a better description) as the Franks beat them up before they could get into france from Spain.

All the same Italian, French, Spanish, Swiss... all the same - really its like driving from Seattle to Utah to cross Europe anyway.

Hmmm...Being a First Nation person (as we refer to ourselves in Canada), I enjoy this music but it cannot compare to the traditional drumming and singing at a ceremony. I also don't understand the dialect (one of many btw we are struggling to keep from being lost)but there's something about the beat of that drum. It represents the beat of the human heart. I accept the fact that you don't understand or enjoy our music. However, to be fair it really should be heard where it was meant to be played. Might I suggest attending a traditional pow wow. Our music as 'primitive' as it may seem is part of a bigger picture. A person can surely not appreciate the drumming or singing without the ceremony it is intended for or without understanding the meaning of both. Most importantly true traditional native music is not to be recorded. Recorded tradtional music hits a sorespot with many traditional Natives. I can understand why now. It has to be understood to be appreciated and respected.

The Drum
In Cree, commonly referred to as "Tawagun".
In Ojibway, commonly referred to as "Tewikan".
In Sioux, commonly referred to as "Chan-che-ga".

Without the drum there would be no Pow wow.

People use different drums for various occasions. The Pow wow drum is a large drum, approximately one metre in diameter. It is the center of the Pow wow celebration that can be used to heal and unify all people. The drum represents the circle of life.

A drum is made of wood and hide, both natural materials. These materials represent honesty and sharing.

The wood comes from a tree. The tree gives life so that we can build the drum. The tree is also telling us where life comes from. Without the sun and the earth there would be no trees - no life. The Anishinabe, the people, were lowered to this earth by the hand of the creator. The tree grows up toward the creator, the source of its life and all of the life on this earth. The hide is from an animal who gives its life for the drum and in this way, represents the gift of sharing.

Once a drum has been made, it is usually given to an individual or a group. Certain people are given the responsibility or instructions in the making of the drum. It is never created as a craft or a toy. Before the drum can be sounded at a Pow wow it must be blessed through a special ceremony led by a elder or a group of elders. Once the ceremony has been completed the drum may be sounded at any Pow wow.

There are usually four or more singers around the drum. A person is usually given the responsibility of caring for the drum. He is called the drum keeper or the drum carrier.

The drumbeat is described as the heartbeat of the people. The drum itself is regarded as a sacred object to be treated with respect. Each drum has a keeper to ensure that no one approaches it under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or shows disrespect by reaching across or setting things on it.

Songs
In Cree, commonly referred to as "Nick gum mowin".
In Ojibway, commonly referred to as " Nagamonun".
In Souix, commonly referred to as "O da wan".

The songs sung are very important! The sound that is made in singing is carried on the breath from deep within us. It is the Creator's breath of life. Elders tells us that the Creator took the earth from the four directions and blew his life-giving breath through the megis shell into the people of the earth so that they might begin their life on earth.

Singing recalls the Creator's breath. When we celebrate through the joy of song, our voice will be heard both in the physical and spiritual worlds. The meaning becomes richer each time the song is heard or sung.

Pow wow songs originate in the Grass Dance Lodge. You will not hear ceremonial songs from other traditional lodges sung at a Pow wow.

Each of the three main Nations in Manitoba, the Cree, the Ojibway, and the Sioux sing different songs. Not only are the songs different because of the language used, but the beat of the drum is subtly different.

Songs are usually passed on orally. Both men and women sing. The men usually lead and the women follow in harmony.

Many Pow wow songs have almost been lost. Many songs come to the Anishinabe through dreams and fasting. Other songs are handed down through generations and these are never changed. The meaning becomes richer each time it is sung. Songs will also be composed by a person with a special gift for creating songs to give special messages and to honour a special person or occasion.

There are songs for special occasions and special dances. For example: if an eagle feather, a sacred symbol, falls during a Pow wow, all music and dancing will stop. The "Picking up of the Eagle Feather Song" is sung, and an elder or veteran will pick up the eagle feather.

Below is a list of songs you may hear and experience at a Pow wow:

Grand Entry Song
Victory Song
Intertribal Song
Friendship Song
Honour Song
Traditional Song
Grass Dance Song
Feast Song
Eagle Song
Flag Song
Give Away Song
Jingle Dress Song
Fancy Dance Song
Hoop Dance Song
Elder's Song
Veteran's Song
Picking up the Eagle Feather Song

Not that I can speak for the relative "ranking" of indegenious music...but most, particularly Native American music, was produced for perhaps diffeerent reasons than todays. Although it may, from the outside, be seen as some form of entertainment...its true nature was ritualistic. It was meant to help stimulate a state of trance for the participants, to take their psyche to another realm, away fromt he everyday mundane...
not to showboat skills of composition or performance. In terms of its goal, its is highly effective. Perhaps, i would imagine, there is also more than meets the ears to the music also...in a purely technical respect.

This I understand ... I can see how this kind of music and tempo could be hipnotic or for trance like states... regardless of its infancy in compisition compared to other indigenous peoples music I can agree with your statements here. You are certainly right that music can be more than entertainment.

Arvo Pärt - Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten
(Jun 08, 2006 - 09:46)
It sounds like a death scene from a movie ... slow-mo of a bunch of people being cut down by gunfire or something

I can’t help but think of platoon when I hear this

Man it’s morbid but beautiful all at the same time

That final note is magnificent

Wow... These lyrics are perfect in capturing the emotion of a hellish relationship and the regret of letting it slide into the abiss.

Not something you want to listen to dinner music on a first date or when you bring home your first child.

But fantastic for those moments where you are ready to scream and tear someone elses hair out.

Welll done RP for this
The White Stripes - As Ugly As I Seem
(May 29, 2006 - 14:21)
I would listen to this a multitude of times versus some of the Hippie stuff that gets played time and time again.

To be honest I find this probably one of the nicest songs that the stripes have done.

Bill you do a good mix of stuff ... keep it up

In all the Worlds indigenous people’s music I find the first nations of North America to be the most unlikable, unimaginative type of singing, rhythms, beats, melody, chorus…. It is a primitive and as basic as it gets

Everyone gather around and beat on this hide stretched over some wood to a 4:4 beat and scream at the top of your lungs in a way that makes no sense or reason.

Are there lyrics to these songs? Or are they just screaming?

When I compare the type of drumming and screaming / chanting that first nations of North America produced and compare that with African tribal music of eastern or central Africa... and there is no comparison. I can listen to Australian, Balinese, Balkans, Indian, African, Nordic, Russian, Arabic heck even Celtic music and all of it makes sense to me in a way

All accept the music from North Americas Indigenous people

The only reason this Robbie Robertson track didn’t receive a 1 is because he used beats and mixes that real first nations music would have never had done.

Someone has finally made this music palatable to listen to....

Too much wobble in her voice
Sounds like someone is playing motor boat and pounding on her back as she sings

or that thing where you wobble your hand up and down on your throat while you talk

good asia minor kinda groove though
Smoke City - Underwater Love

Tina Dico - In The Red
(May 12, 2006 - 14:13)
There is more to the Daines than writing about Ugly ducklings, Lego and making Muslims go freaking nuts.

I love this woman and she makes me feel all squishy

Hopefully the Daines wont do a comic strip about Canadians and piss us all off too

Good Find Bill
Ane Brun - Balloon Ranger

I have to admit I have heard more Scandinavian Singers on RP than anywhere else

I wonder if Bill is looking for IKEA to buy RP from him or something?

Peter Murphy - All Night Long
(May 09, 2006 - 14:26)
Its not - Bella Lugosi's Dead
But its his best album (I think its from about 1992)

Bauhaus was an amazing band that produced some very important music and fashion that has carried over today.

Tones on Tail
Love and Rockets
Peter Murphy

Amazing music and very diverse all from the same band
Thanks RP for playing this
Devo - Freedom of Choice
(May 09, 2006 - 13:17)
One of the first songs I ever played in a rock band.... I must have been 12-13 playing rythm guitar and it absolutely rocked... I will never forget seeing the faces of the kids watching us rock out...

I had such a good time... too bad I sucked at guitar and got interested in girls and parties rather than practice.

Good times... Good Times

Béla Fleck - New South Africa
(May 08, 2006 - 12:49)
I guess this music poses the question:
Does Eclectic music = music that doesnt fit any mold?

I find listening to Bella kinda like listening to Kenny G meets some wierd Jazz / World Music band and to be honest

It does nothing for me... it reminds me of Kenny G and Yahni and John Tesh

No thanks

Stone Roses - Fools Gold
(May 05, 2006 - 08:46)
I found myself driving from Vancouver to Calgary listening to this album / cd in my car.. when this tune came on I found myself going from about 100kmh to about 140kmh

I found it hard explaining to the mountie that it was the music that made me drive faster... he did reduce my fine for my inventiveness

This album has some great travelling music... just insure that you use cruise control

The Clash - The Magnificent Seven
(May 05, 2006 - 08:06)
This album was my first exposure to Rap ... (except for Toasting - from Ska bands)

I can clearly remember Shell Oil used the melody from one of the songs on this album to sell gas. I dont know if the Clash new of this and just liked cashing cheques or not.

All the same this album was full of social commentary and the fears of Russian and the US dropping the gloves and going at it.

I believe it was a double or 4 album set... I guess thats two CD's now

Albums.... are they even made now?
Gomez - How We Operate
(May 05, 2006 - 07:51)
I like the Grit... its got a real anger underneath
then smooths out near the end

I like it
Nitin Sawhney - Dead Man
(May 03, 2006 - 15:19)
How many times have we all had to listen to southern blues mixed with Hindi rythm ... honestly its just so... I dont know ... freaking nuts

Love the idea and the delivery well done RP for bringing us this kind of music

Secret Machines - Faded Lines
(May 02, 2006 - 09:44)
Totally has the New-Wave kinda groove.... kinda poppy but I like it

Live - Lightning Crashes
(May 02, 2006 - 09:18)
For those that dont want this played because it got radio play - back in the day

I could say the same thing about all the lame-ass grateful dead music that gets played on RP
- But I dont

This song is powerful and beautiful in its lyrics and presentation. So many songs are fluffy and nonsense... this one talks about death and rebirth and the circle of life and for me strikes a cord as I remember listening to it on the way to my mother’s funeral

Although it’s just a song… it spoke to my emotions and made me reflect on life and death without making me want to drive the car into oncoming traffic like Morrissey or the Cure can do. Being uplifted by music seems harder to come by of late, this one lifted me and I thank RP for playing it.

Everything but the Girl - The Only Living Boy in New York
(May 02, 2006 - 09:09)
Nice... but basically sounds exactly like the origional

Try to modify (without killing) the essence of the song

RP has shown so many variations on certain songs...
Thanks RP
k.d. lang - Save Me
(May 01, 2006 - 09:53)
One of the best voices (Male or Female) I have ever heard.

I can remember seeing her in the Cow-Punk days at clubs in Vancouver thinking "What the Hell is this?"

However... I believe that she has probably the purest voice I have ever heard.

Regardless of what you think of her looks or lifestyle... she is probably one of the greatest singers ever.
Gorillaz - Demon Days
(May 01, 2006 - 09:13)
Fantastic album... but almost bi-polar in its way of going from this Gospal like track to almost angry chaotic hip-hop sounds

I especially the energy the band has and it reminds me of the racial mixes that Ska bands had in the early 80's

I like it... even though Hip-hop has never been what I would call a favourite music of mine.

Jeff Beck - Going Down
(May 01, 2006 - 08:21)
I can hear this everyday on those (Classic Rock) AM-FM stations...

I am sure there are other tracks from back in the day that we could hear besides this one

Grateful Dead - Scarlet Begonias
(Apr 26, 2006 - 10:23)
What is the appeal of the Dead? ... at best they sound like an OK garage band with OK singing and playing skills

Why is it so may people follow this band so closely?

Midnight Oil - The Dead Heart
(Apr 25, 2006 - 15:49)
One of the most powerful live performances that I have ever seen. Political messages with a good beat and pop sound.

Where are the political bands today?

I had Billy Bragg, The Jam, Specials, Clash, Sex Pistols, Midnight Oil, Public Enemy, Paris, Disposible Heros, Black Flag, Henry Rollins

What political information do teens listen to When they are not emulating a Pimp or Gangster or a White Rapper who wants to be a Pimp or Gangster?

What band sends political information to teens now?

Anyone?
Mich Gerber - Haboob
(Apr 25, 2006 - 15:15)
I wonder if the Taliban get down to this sort of thing?

I wonder if those wing nuts in Hamas start grinding to this sort of thing (with RPG on their shoulders)

I wonder if they will put a Jihad on my white behind for thinking of them that way

Dirka Dirka - Jihad

Medeski, Martin & Wood - Anonymous Skulls
(Apr 25, 2006 - 12:03)
Nope... dont like it

sounds like Nosferatu aerobics music or something

Can you see Nosferatu working it with leg warmers on to this.... I can
Steve Winwood - Different Light
(Apr 25, 2006 - 11:46)
As far as blue-eyed soul ... Steve is probably the best at it

However I agree with the other comments here that he has never hit the pinnacle on being a Major presence in music.... mind you his talent is huge and we forget that he was a teenager when he was playing (and singing) in Traffic

He is phenomenal talent that always puts out good stuff... but never ground breaking stuff

This tune does have a great funk to it though the guitar is punchy and works well with the drums.

The Cars - Moving In Stereo
(Apr 24, 2006 - 14:30)
My first album... Cars - The Cars
My first Love - Phoebe Cates > Fast Times at Ridge Mount High

(for those under 35 - talk amoungst yourselves)

Love this... absolutely love this
Michael Franti & Spearhead - Pray For Grace
(Apr 21, 2006 - 08:46)
I used to love listening to his older stuff "Disposible Heros" I met Michael on a BC Ferry between Vancouver and Victoria and had a chance to tell him how I have used his poetry and sayings when I was teaching.

Here I was a total business man in a suit and everthing talking to him about social change and how his music affected me and I shared it with students.

I will never forget his appreciation and happiness of hearing that "straight teeth in your mouth being more important than the words that come out of it" was being used to push students to be more steak than sizzle

That was a good day
Van Morrison - Precious time
(Apr 20, 2006 - 15:11)
This guy is simply fantastic... How can you not love "Into the Mystic"

Simply perfect blue eyed soul... love it
Belle and Sebastian - Another Sunny Day
(Apr 20, 2006 - 14:59)
I totally hear the Kinks in this ...

Come dancing ....
Nitin Sawhney - Mausam
(Apr 19, 2006 - 13:31)
I am so down with this stuff right now... Indian music / meets UK HipHop and World music

Great stuff... If you ever get a chance to check out a Bhangra party... I would totally recommend it (even though I was the only white guy there... I had a hoot)

Samosas and food out the ying yang
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Dani California
(Apr 19, 2006 - 09:21)
They are showing there age and I think they are showing more of a POP side to this album

Very Polished sound with the background vocals and overal smooth feel to the tune. A far cry from the days of them touring with Fishbone doing Freaky Stylie tunes with nothing but socks on there naughty bits

Hey everyone grows up and everyone changes... I dont mind it.. I wont stage dive to it... but I still like it

Sam Roberts - Hard Road
(Apr 19, 2006 - 09:16)
Sam has some good stuff... but the Canadian (eastern media) has certainly put this guy into the spotlight

His music is OK but not Godlike by any means.

Some good tunes... but no divine messanger or anything like that
Metric - Police and the Private
(Apr 18, 2006 - 13:35)
Metric is one of those bands who have some pretty cool stuff but just havent gotten it together hit-wise

They are from Canada but many canadians think they are British or American

They have a real funky and quite attractive lead singer who makes parts of my body feel funny

I love songs like "Combat Baby" for example which is a great song that I thought would have break them out

The Jam - Town Called Malice
(Apr 17, 2006 - 13:36)
There is a Brand loyalty that happens when you are in your early teens... you become attached to music and culture at this age (this is why companies focus so heavily on kids of this age as this will determine buying paterns at the later stages of life)

I grew up listening to The Jam, Specials, Clash, XTC, Joe Jackson etc... and hence have become attached to it for the rest of my life...

Needless to say my kids think I am insaine when I jump around listening to this stuff... but no matter what this music brings back so many crazy memories of chasing girls and doing stupid things that I would die from trying now

thanks RP for this...
Sufjan Stevens - Casimir Pulaski Day
(Apr 17, 2006 - 08:56)
Anyone who has had a close friend / lover die from something like cancer can relate to this... I feel it (its something I dont like remembering... but I get it)

Death sucks... there is no good way to go

Good song... has a emotional impact - I think you have to be open to this to appreciate it. If your not ready to think of these things it could be considerably depressing to listen to.
Fun Da Mental - Ja Sha Taan
(Apr 12, 2006 - 15:07)
This isnt Arab .... its Indian ...
Bhangra parties are a big thing and big big money

I have never seen so many people (grannies and grandads) out on a dance floor before in my life

All the fine looking ladies in Sari's

All the young men out of their skulls

All the samosas you can stuff in your face
and chicken tandori with pan bread

Smokin good time

Gorillaz - Dare
(Apr 12, 2006 - 13:21)
Love this stuff.... good groove
The Tea Party - Winter Solstice
(Apr 11, 2006 - 12:29)
this is when the Tea-Party were like some sort of Doors sounding - LedZeplen tribute band

They have gone into their own sound and honestly I like the fact they went their own way rather than follow (what they think) people want to hear

good on them... making a living doing music is a rare thing
Subdudes - All The Time In The World
(Apr 07, 2006 - 12:47)
Good drinking music ... great BBQ music
some real good blue-eyed soul there
Midnight Oil - Blue Sky Mine
(Apr 07, 2006 - 10:58)
I remember seeing these guys in a opera house in Vancouver with the "House of Freaks" ... it was excellent (Diesel & Dust) ... Loved it

Was good to see that a band can deliver political statements

Seems that torch has been dropped by most... too many booty shakin and thug mentorship going on in music for the youth right now

Where are the political angry musicans that teens listen to?
Social Distortion - Ball And Chain
(Apr 07, 2006 - 10:48)
Nope ... doesnt do it for me
Ryan Adams - Easy Plateau
(Apr 06, 2006 - 15:25)
I have to admit Ryan has grown on me (not like a mullet... more like a nice shiny toenail)

He is quite the artist
Alejandro Escovedo - Castanets
(Apr 06, 2006 - 15:11)
"She turns me on like a pickup Truck"

- What the hell? Gas or Diesel?
Colin Hay - Down Under
(Apr 06, 2006 - 14:10)
The guitar work in this is fantastic and very funky I didnt even really listen to him ... I was trasfixed on the guitar behind

Very nice work whomever that is
Rachid Taha - Barra Barra
(Apr 06, 2006 - 13:54)
Well its nice to know they can rock out... even though they burn buildings when they see a comic strip or want to behead someone for switching to another religion

I know its a broad paint brush ... but I am really tired of it all

Funky rock tune though... good beat
The Wailin' Jennys - Arlington
(Apr 06, 2006 - 09:54)
I bought the album... some songs are beautiful and the lyrics are tight and with perfect pitch...

But some of the tracks (like any album I guess) grate and just sound too fluffy

Specifically the Neil Young cover of Old Man starts nice but doesn’t have a grit that I would want to hear in that song.

They are magical and I would recommend this album for those who want some nice music to relax to... but I think that you will find that (like most albums) needs to be changed after about 7-8 songs as it starts to all sound the same.

Arlington by far is the best track...

Thanks RP for this

Our Lady Peace - Are You Sad?
(Apr 05, 2006 - 15:08)
StarSeed is the only song from this band that I can listen to...

I wish they were not considered "Canadian Content" so we canadians have to hear them again and again to meet CRTC regulations.

Maybe this is why I listen only to RP now!!

Bill please only star seed if you are going to play these guys ... yuck
Zero 7 - Home

Sorry I have to say it...love the music though
Bruce Cockburn - Wondering Where the Lions Are
(Apr 03, 2006 - 12:19)
I have a 5 year old that loves dancing with me to this .... she normally has her toy lion with her and joins in with the Chorus with quite a bit of vigor

Wondering where the lions are ....

I love being a Dad

Isnt that interesting how lyrics done right can do that

Then I blinked and I was back infront of my computer working

Oh well at least its Friday
Paolo Conte - Via Con Me
(Mar 31, 2006 - 08:31)
I feel like wearing a barret and a striped shirt and surrendering to the Germans when I hear this song

Rolling Stones - Wild Horses
(Mar 31, 2006 - 08:21)
This is the first song I learned on the guitar
I played this over and over and over on the 8-track (people under 35 talk amoungst yourselves) until my brother came into the room and ripped it out of the deck

Too funny ... me in my toughskins playing this on a replica Fender Strat with a little radioshack Amp
Billie Holiday - Speak Low (Bent Remix)
(Mar 30, 2006 - 14:59)
I hear Shirley Bassey kinda groove to this
& Sweet and Low should be buying this for marketing

The Cardigans - You're The Storm
(Mar 30, 2006 - 14:55)
She is the Sexiest thing to come from Sweden since the Ikea soft ice cream machine
Iguanas - Flame On
(Mar 27, 2006 - 13:52)
No
NO
NOOOOOO
Béla Fleck - Big Country
(Mar 24, 2006 - 13:58)
Dont care for this ... kinda like KennyG meets the Hill-Billys

Its the Alto sax that kills it for me
(at least I believe its an Alto Sax)

Feist - Mushaboom
(Mar 24, 2006 - 13:08)
Why does canada produce so many girl singers?
It seems like every lady that sings is canadian

I find my head bobbing along to this and my work mates are looking at me like I have gone nuts

... modern office spaces without cubes ... what can you do

Moby - Raining Again
(Mar 24, 2006 - 10:46)
I grew up a 100 miles north of Vancouver BC and we grew up in what seemed to be constant rain. I grew up with a rain coat and gum-boots as someone in the Artic would grow up with warm clothes...

To be honest... I miss the rain, the sound of rain on the window, on the roof

Funny how you can get used to an enviroment
Howard Jones - No One Is To Blame (Acoustic)
(Mar 23, 2006 - 13:08)
I found this perfect... totally reminded me of my early teens, chasing girls and trying to fit in with the others

I would not re-live my teenage years for all the tea in China...

Its funny how music you listen too as a teen sticks with you through the rest of your life.

Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros - Bhindi Bhagee
(Mar 22, 2006 - 12:57)
I like this ... Joe is / was such a talent
Tom Waits - Step Right Up
(Mar 22, 2006 - 12:23)
I am in Marketing for a living and this song and "I'm the Man" by Joe Jackson are my Mantra

I love it
Dar Williams - Empire
(Mar 22, 2006 - 11:02)
I find this wonderfully spoken....

We kill a million of their races

But when our people torture you its just a few random cases...

It’s hard to look into the mirror and see what you have done wrong.

This song will never see the light of day on AM/FM radio as it is so un-sexy to be against the government right now....

I thank her for the great song and how it’s delivered... Disagreeing with the War doesn’t mean that you dont love your country or support your troops... It simply is a disagreement on the validity and reason for doing something that has caused the death of untold thousands of Iraq civilians.

Thanks for the song Dar ... it makes me look into the mirror a little more closely

Radiohead - Creep
(Mar 22, 2006 - 10:18)
I have to say for the first time I like the clean (radio version) over the one that has him swearing, "So Fu##n special"

I dont know why... I just didnt need to hear the Fu in the song

Some songs its needed... some it isnt

I love the sound this song has ... its like being hit with a tidal wave of sound and then lifted gently by his voice and put down softly

Very nice
Dobie Gray - Drift Away
(Mar 22, 2006 - 09:09)
I am in elementary school again
With my ToughSkins pants (Aqua-marine)
and my hockey stick with a 3 pound super-blade attached and my NorthStar runners

With a Snoopy (Joe Cool) sweater

I love this - thanks RP
Rubyhorse - Evergreen
(Mar 21, 2006 - 15:17)
This reminds me of Jesus Jones when he was good
The Be Good Tanyas - Light Enough to Travel
(Mar 21, 2006 - 14:57)
Totally reminds me of the Artsy fartsy girls of Vancouver

All the hair colours and 6 strings

too funny... They have the white girl groove down though... I will give them that

pretty nice stuff...
Roxy Music - Avalon
(Mar 21, 2006 - 14:49)
Who else lost their virginity listening to this album?

Man I am grinning like an idiot right now

Air - La Femme D'Argent
(Mar 21, 2006 - 14:28)
Pretty funky for the French...

French dont seem funky to me... the whole snob thing doesnt work with being funky

but this is funky

The Beatles - Tomorrow Never Knows
(Mar 20, 2006 - 14:12)
I love this stuff ... I really loved the Yellow submarine as a kid and wanted to go as a blue meanie for Halloween

Nobody knew who I was except for the teens (this was the 70's)

It was too funny

Talk Talk - Eden
(Mar 07, 2006 - 08:58)
Talk Talk broke it wide open with this album and I hear this album in Radiohead and many other bands that followed.

I remember how poorly this was recieved initally but now in retrospect I find this album to be one of the best in my collection (and its very hard to find now as its out of print)

Fantastic to hear this on RP... it shows what taste RP has and how I enjoy this station so much

Thanks

Charlie Parker - My Little Suede Shoes
(Mar 03, 2006 - 13:08)
How cool is this?
Question how old was he when he died?
The Delgados - The City Consumes Us
(Mar 01, 2006 - 10:03)
I am guessing she doesnt like her hometown
Maybe she came from Powell River as well

It may not be the As* hole of the world .... but you can certainly see it from there
Holly Cole - Little Boy Blue
(Feb 28, 2006 - 09:35)
Holy Cole has been in Canada for sometime - I would strongly suggest her Johny Nash cover of "I can see clearly Now"

She has a great trio that used to go coast to coast about twice a year it seemed.

Beautiful and talented and very very slick
Just as Dianna is

I have no idea why she didnt catch on like Dianna did (maybe because Dianna got huge fans like Clint Eastwood right out of the gate)
Waterboys - Fisherman's Blues
(Feb 27, 2006 - 13:58)
The best Celtic / Rock band EVER... Fishermans Blues and Bang on the Ear are probably two of the best songs I have ever heard (for Celtic Rock)

This album came out when the airwaves were full of Sh*t and it made listening to music interesting once again.

I have in my will that the song, "When you go away" play at my funeral.

Perfect for its time, but still great to listen to. I remember seeing the movie, "Waking Ned Devine" and this song was being played and it fit perfectly

All those that dont like it... thats fine... its awsome to me and stirs my soul.
Manu Chao - Me Gustas Tu
(Feb 27, 2006 - 10:07)
Sorry for my lack of knowledge of Espanol... but what is he talking about?
Nitin Sawhney - Dead Man
(Feb 23, 2006 - 08:10)
I dont know how many times I have had to listen to a band with Southern Blues mixed with Hip Hop back beats and east asian lyrics all backed up by a country twang vocal track.

wait a minute ... what the heck? that actually sounded funky ... dont know if a whole album would grate after about the third of fourth song

good effort for doing something different though
.... at least its a new idea
Gary Numan - Cars
(Feb 09, 2006 - 13:46)
New Waves Grand Daddy... I hear Gary's beats in almost every hip-hop library

The hooks he created using synths are equal too Kraftwerk and the music holds it own. True origional using organic and technology like this

Moog Synths in Brain Salad Surgery (ELP) Kraftwerk (Trans Europe Express) and Gary Numan (Pleasure Principle) ... the best ever
Jimi Hendrix - Crosstown Traffic
(Feb 09, 2006 - 13:43)
I would have loved to see him work with Sly and the Family Stone...

I think people like Jimi and Buddy only come around one a lifetime

True talents taken way way to quickly
Johnny Cash - A Boy Named Sue
(Feb 09, 2006 - 13:34)
I Love this Tune .... My Dad played that album and Ray Charles over and over and over again

Oh and Sink the Bizmark ...
Bruce Cockburn - Burden of the Angel-Beast
(Feb 09, 2006 - 12:53)
This totally reminds me of Welcome to the Machine or Delicate Sound of Thunder

I never thought of Bruce and Pink at the same time before... interesting

Maybe we should call this Bink Cloyd music or Bruce Floyd or Pink Cockburn (well actually that is something that happens to naughty boys)

I like Bruce Floyd
Yes
Its Bruce Floyd

Kula Shaker - Tattva
(Feb 06, 2006 - 09:39)
Rather not listen to this actually ... I am sure that alot of people "Dig" what these guys are doing

... I for one do not

Monte Montgomery - When Will I
(Feb 01, 2006 - 09:25)
Guitar Good - Singing Bad
Men At Work - Overkill
(Jan 31, 2006 - 15:26)
Wow I had a grade 8 flashback ... the red shirt and leather tie...

Listening to this and Hughie Lewis and the Boy album from a new band called U2

It seems so long ago ... wait it was
Gary Jules - Mad World
(Jan 31, 2006 - 12:20)
Wow ... so few covers actually sound or make you feel the effects of the lyrics better than the original

This one is one I like much better than the original

Solomon Burke - None Of Us Are Free
(Jan 31, 2006 - 09:59)
This is wonderful music... love the bass tones and the harmonies ... truthful and punchy.... very nice selection of the sea of crap that we could here

Nice Bill... Really Nice

Bomb The Bass - Empire (w/ Sinéad O'Connor)
(Jan 31, 2006 - 07:56)
So this is a love song then?

Shawn Mullins - Blue As You
(Jan 30, 2006 - 14:49)
Great Voice ... hopefully he can do something to keep the money flowing in besides lullaby that was played to death on those soft rock stations

Good luck Shawn

Björk - Come To Me
(Jan 30, 2006 - 14:03)
She is so freaking wierd
I love it ....

I would love to have dinner with her to find out what kind of crazy Icelandic stuff will come flying out of her mouth after a few glasses of wine

It would be an awsome blind date show
Eddie Harris - Listen Here
(Jan 30, 2006 - 12:20)
Wow .... I would love to play this to a Kenny G fan (then beat them silly for listening to KennyG)

Or play this when I am beating them silly

Well done RP
Nice stuff - this with the peanuts theme would be perfect

Thanks
Dar Williams - Empire
(Jan 27, 2006 - 12:29)
I wonder who she is singing about?
Would it could it be US?
Beethoven - Moonlight Sonata
(Jan 27, 2006 - 07:21)
Timeless perfection
This will be played and enjoyed until the end of time

When I die I really want to meet this guy... maybe play some ping pong or something

He was amazing
Barenaked Ladies - What A Good Boy (Live)
(Jan 27, 2006 - 07:13)
I can remember seeing these guys at the Town Pump in Vancouver ... it must have been late 80's

Doing a Rap and beat box thing... we didnt know who they were then ... they were really funny and made quite a few great cracks about a buddy of mine and his really bad jacket he had on (sort of like a Thriller Jacket)

It was a good night... they were still Indie and you could tell the talent they had was extreme

Good for the BNL to go so far and make such an impact
Dave Brubeck Quartet - Take Five
(Jan 26, 2006 - 09:22)
All Hip Hopper who think they are cool
Can’t touch this level of coolness

This is like the Dali Lama level of cool
The Chuck Yeager level of cool

Words really can’t describe how cool this song is and how it makes you feel
Simply perfect.. The breathy sax and snappy drumming and base line

Timeless piece of music …

The Wailin' Jennys - Arlington
(Jan 25, 2006 - 15:31)
This by far is the best song on the album... They are so incredibly tight with lyrics and they make it sound simple but they are so very talented at singing in harmony

Simple perfect pitch, pace and melody
Amazing

Chemical Brothers - Let Forever Be
(Jan 25, 2006 - 12:14)
One of the best Music Videos ever created... love the bass line ... love the drums

Great tune... however they hit thier stride when Techno was on its way down

too bad
Pulp - Common People
(Jan 24, 2006 - 14:36)
I loved it when the lead singer of this band jumped up on the stage at the Brits when Micheal Jackson was doing some stupid artsy fartsy production where he was curing blind people or hugging Jews and Arabs or something like that

All the same when he got up on the stage and started dancing around like an idiot I totally laughed my head off

Ashley MacIsaac - Sleepy Maggie
(Jan 24, 2006 - 14:01)
Nuttier than a squirrels fart
But the boy can play

Too bad he destroyed his career by being a horses a**

The Chieftains thought he was truly insane when he toured with them

The Bad Plus - Flim
(Jan 23, 2006 - 13:59)
I was trying to listen to see if it was a drum machine or duplicate beats laid ontop of one another

If it is a man... or woman... they are fantastic and need to be put into a spotlight

reminds me of the first time I really listened to Rush or the Police

Man o Man ... try to keep up with that

Stevie Wonder - Don't You Worry 'bout A Thing
(Jan 23, 2006 - 13:32)
He is amazing .... simply .... amazing
Secret Machines - Nowhere Again
(Jan 23, 2006 - 13:16)
Who are these guys? that was great!!! MOre of these Guys RP
Ekova - Siip Siie
(Jan 23, 2006 - 08:29)
I can just see the peoples of Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands ... all the way down to North California dancing around like fir trees in the wind

All the Hippies of the left-coast would totally be digging this sort of thing...

Kinda funky... Kinda silly in the same way she isnt singing real lyrics ... more like scat from the early Jazz days

Dance Hippie Dance
Traffic - Dear Mr. Fantasy
(Jan 20, 2006 - 14:33)
Wasnt Steve Winwood like 8 when he joined this band or something....

That or he is a vampire and is actually 300 years old because he looks exactly the same as he did back in the days of Traffic

Wierd... I think Steve and Dick Clark are masters of the black arts...
Rolling Stones - Stray Cat Blues
(Jan 20, 2006 - 12:50)
I have the other album cover with the rolling stones dressed in Victorian clothes on the inside sleeve.

I remember thinking how raunchy this song was when I was little, and really it must have been very risky to play something like this on the radio back in the day.

Love the album front and back (oops dating my self) like the MP3 of this recording very much

Way to go RP for playing this tune

World Party - Hollywood
(Jan 20, 2006 - 08:09)
Doesnt do it for me ... sounds like some background music during a latin soap opera or baywatch
Nick Drake - Three Hours
(Jan 20, 2006 - 07:49)
I was introduced to Nicks "Pink Moon" song from of all places a Volkswagon commercial

For once marketing did something right and converted me into a fan

Great music... reminds me of Cat Stevens, but more refined
Crosby Stills Nash & Young - Country Girl
(Jan 20, 2006 - 07:40)
Some of the best music samples I have ever created have come from this album...

The best part is when you play back a beat to a younger person who doesn’t know CSNY they are amazed

This album is so amazing in so many ways... I think more than anything it bridged the country sounds and melodies with counter-culture movement.

I think it was one of the first "Hippie" albums that my father and mother played religiously...

It was this...Ray Charles and Johnny Cash

Björk - Jóga
(Jan 18, 2006 - 14:21)
that little eskimo can shure punch the notes
and man I would love to sit down and try to figure out exactly what the hell goes on in her head

She is just wild... I love it
Radiohead - Everything in its Right Place
(Jan 17, 2006 - 15:23)
God I just found myself in a trance.... this sounds so good on the headphones its amamzing

Thanks RP
Grateful Dead - Uncle John's Band
(Jan 17, 2006 - 13:33)
Unlike most of you Free Hippie love types dancing around like fir trees in the wind listening to RP

I can not understand the popularity of the dead

I am a child of the 60's and honestly I dont understand why the hippies love these guys soo freaking much.

I am sure they are nice people ... and probably smoked dope like it was a cure for cancer

Man... I just dont get this bands popularity
The New Pornographers - The Bleeding Heart Show
(Jan 17, 2006 - 12:37)
Best thing to come from Vancouver BC in a long long time... inventive and catchy...

Thanks goodness some of the indie bands from the left coast are starting to make money

great stuff thanks for this RP
Sonic Youth - New Hampshire
(Jan 04, 2006 - 13:57)
They are soooo NewYork

I dont think I am hip enough or cool enough to like these guys... its like only a certain club can get the truth they are dropping

Cool Thing... Sitting with a Ki-Ty

Neil Diamond - Oh Mary
(Jan 04, 2006 - 13:38)
I believe this is the CD that SONY decieded to put a trojan horse into so if you upload it onto your computer it adds a real nice Trojan virus to stop you from copying the song onto your MP3 player etc...

http://www.sonybmg.com/indexmediamax.html
Great Big Sea - When I'm Up
(Jan 03, 2006 - 09:08)
Boys from the Rock that have done good. the whole Maritime Celtic thing can get a little too much from time to time (not as bad as French Canadian music…my God how does that get any airplay) but its nice to see that someone from the rock is making money.

GBS - way to go
They should have done more work with the Irish Celtic bands like the Chieftains etc...

Eva Cassidy - Fields of Gold
(Jan 02, 2006 - 15:31)
Wow... she was amazing... that is a true loss
At least she was able to put something like that disc so even when she is gone she can still move people.

At least she accomplished immortality in one way

Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill
(Jan 02, 2006 - 15:20)
You know... If Kate needs a boy toy... I am available
She can have her way with me and everything

I wont fuss
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Over And Over Again (Lost and Again)
(Jan 02, 2006 - 15:12)
If I want to listen to the talking heads from the early days I will throw one of thier albums on. Why do these guys try sooo freaking hard to sound like them

I wonder if he wears a big white suit and has black rimmed glasses as well

No no no no
The Specials - Message to You Rudy
(Jan 02, 2006 - 14:56)
I can remember the early 80's and nothing like this had been heard before in Canada... I remember having brave new waves on and hearing this for the first time it must have been around 80 or 81

Ska was such a great thing to see... it was really the first time I saw White and Black boys playing music together and all grooving to it

Not like the black guy trying to fit into the white peg or vice versa.

The ska movement was the best... great drinking and jumping around music...

Monkey Man is still one of my favourites to this day... my little girls think I am insaine when I jump around the kitchen making breakfast to it.

They are so square
10,000 Maniacs - Hey Jack Kerouac
(Jan 02, 2006 - 14:52)
I dont mind the maniacs for about three - four songs in a row... then I look for a clock tower and my 30-30 Screaming, "Daddy didnt let me play first base - Daddy didnt let me play first base!!"

Belle and Sebastian - Another Sunny Day
(Jan 02, 2006 - 14:51)
I thought the Kinks had come back from the dead
Neil Young - No Wonder
(Jan 02, 2006 - 13:17)
As much as I can only take Neil in small doses... I have to admit he is always changing and never stays down one path for two long.

And the fact that he is a train buff is another thing I love about the guy

Who doesnt like a steam engine?
Talk Talk - I Believe In You
(Jan 02, 2006 - 12:51)
This is probably the best album they ever released.. I used to play this when doing design work through my headphones...

I love this album and how it was accomplished....

Thank you RP for playing it

Yoshida Brothers - Storm
(Jan 02, 2006 - 12:40)
I love this stuff... I had a homestay student from Japan that was playing this stuff over and over and over again.

Kind of grows on you like Mission impossible with a Kung Fu kinda flavour
Rusted Root - Ecstasy
(Jan 02, 2006 - 12:37)
This has a wicked bass line ... However it reminds me of Hippie music (some sort of half naked hippies dancing to the greatful dead or something like that)

Doesnt do it for me (Visions of old hippies dancing like trees blowing in the wind doesnt do it for me)

Son Volt - Afterglow 61
(Jan 02, 2006 - 12:26)
Sort of like the Tragically Hip
I dont know if I like it or not yet....

Totally reminds me of the hip
Afro Celt Sound System - Colossus
(Jan 02, 2006 - 10:35)
I can just see all the Hippies of the Pacific North West dancing around like Fir trees in the wind...

kinda funky ... celtic and fun all at the same time

Mike Scott - Bring 'em all in
(Dec 22, 2005 - 12:14)
The Waterboys were probably one of the best of the Celtic bands to ever come out into the mainstream. Bang on the Ear is still one of my favorite tunes of all time.

Mike has tried hard to re capture the "Fisherman’s Blues" vibe since but really doesn’t come close to it.

Love the organic rhythm of this track though...

Sinéad O'Connor - Wake Up And Make Love With Me (w/ The Block)
(Dec 22, 2005 - 09:35)
Dont Women get it... We men just want to cuddle and talk about our feelings

We are tired of being treated like objects...
Foo Fighters - Times Like These
(Dec 21, 2005 - 14:30)
I love them because the Fight The Foo... but lets be honest ... too few lyrics here

Because you have to give and give again

Maybe somebody could have given a few more versus for him to sing rather than the chorus
The Tragically Hip - Fiddlers Green
(Dec 21, 2005 - 14:10)
We had this playing at a friends funeral.... it was awsome... it felt like he was OK and it was just like the old days... It was like he was sitting with us

it was really nice, and I remember this older lady mentioning the song about fiddlers green and how it was beautiful...

she thought it was some country singer

James would have laughed at that...
The Doors - Riders On The Storm
(Dec 21, 2005 - 13:07)
One time I was working with too much contact cement in a tight space...

And I came out of the room and had Jim Morrison like poetry coming out of my mouth

All I needed was leather pants and beads and I would have been jiggy wit it.
Kate Bush - How to Be Invisible
(Dec 21, 2005 - 13:00)
If Kate Bush is reading this... I am willing for you to take me as your Boy-Toy... I will even allow you to have your way with me and everything.

Neil Young - One of These Days
(Dec 20, 2005 - 13:35)
I love Neils music he has always tried to break the mold and try new things...

However... RP does play
Neil Young
Elvis Costello
Grateful Dead

Far more than needed
Just a little... snippett here or there is all we need

Thanks

The Bad Plus - Flim
(Dec 20, 2005 - 08:36)
this is great stuff... I would like to build things to this kind of music

in a woodshop doing some funky stuff

I remember my dad doing great stuff in his workshed to the peanuts theme and take five
Deep Forest - Marta's Song
(Dec 20, 2005 - 08:24)
I am down with Folk music (especially Eastern European & Celtic folk music) I find it beautiful but Honestly this techno folk - ambient stuff reminds me of that french group that everyone listend too about ten years ago

No thanks
The Stone Roses - I Am The Resurrection
(Dec 19, 2005 - 13:44)
Manchester sound ... funky white boys on way way too much mind altering drugs
Yello - The Rhythm Divine
(Dec 19, 2005 - 12:24)
Shirley did "Gold Finger" theme song ... she has to be around 70 - 80 now!!

Man she can punch the notes - what a voice
A Perfect Circle - The Noose
(Dec 19, 2005 - 11:30)
I will never forget hearing "Sober" from Tool for the first time and how my wife (who grew up on country music) was shocked by the sound and thought it sounded horrible...

I remember relating her the lyrics and how it talks in first person as a drug addict who will do anything to suck you in so they can get what they need.

It changed her opinion to metal from that point on (not that it doesn’t play in the house unless I am doing it) but at least she is looking beneath the surface at the music

Perfect Circle is a great side project from Tool and I love the fact that Radio Paradise can be so bold to play this sort of combinations of music.

Leo Kottke - Jack Gets Up
(Dec 19, 2005 - 07:31)
I like it ... it was a great transition from David Bowie... I would like to see Leo with Bruce Cockburn

Some great guitar playing
Patty Griffin - Long Ride Home
(Dec 13, 2005 - 12:20)
I was moved... this is probably one of the best songs I have heard on this station in months
Tracy Chapman - Change
(Dec 13, 2005 - 11:27)
It was nice to see Tracy enter tne big-time during all the other types of music at the time were so different (especially for a black female signer)

I would like to say though I do believe she gets a larger share of air time on RP than other artists

But hey! thats the Program Directors right
Bob Dylan - Like a Rolling Stone
(Dec 12, 2005 - 15:43)
I remember my Hippie Sister thought this guy was the voice of her generation... Then I remember the Bank of Montreal using his songs to promote RRSP's or some financial feature...

Then I thought... What a sellout

What would Neil Young say to Him? would he kick his ass?

I would pay-per-view to see Neil Young kick Bob's mumbling ass
Rolling Stones - Back of My Hand
(Dec 12, 2005 - 15:41)
Reminds me of the Beggars Banquet album (cat scratch fever ET all)

Was really the first of the Rolling Stones I really really liked and could play along with my guitar

For the longest time I thought they should hang them up until I heard this... this works for me... and its nice to hear them do what I always thought was perfect for them

The blues

Subdudes - Angel To Be
(Dec 12, 2005 - 15:38)
I was thinking Steve Windwood in his early days... then I though NO... Los Lobos... then No...what the?

Nice...
The Cardigans - The Road
(Dec 12, 2005 - 15:29)
They are the best thing to come from Sweden since IKEA, Vovlo (cross country station Wagons)

I like most of the Swedes who play in the NHL too but they where those stupid looking Jofa helmets with the big visors and stay out of the corners too much.

Sons & Daughters - Red Receiver
(Dec 12, 2005 - 15:22)
There is much better / cleaner / sharper music out there.

Though I have always had a weekness for the ladies from Scotland (the accent is killer)

but they always ending up drinking you under the table and head butting you on the dance floor.

Heaven forbid you are a Rangers Fan when they are a Celtics fan.

Dont care for the tune... Radio Paradise could select much better material
Kate Bush - Nocturn
(Dec 12, 2005 - 15:18)
I still love Kate and she is one of the first women of music that I found not only incredibly sexy but also someone that has always pushed the envelope of music and the place for women in it.

However, I think Kate might want to try something new... I find this song really interesting but goes nowhere by the end I want it just to end.

Kate you can do much much better. You are still a Goddess, Alas this song isn’t stellar.

Peter Gabriel - Biko
(Dec 12, 2005 - 14:21)
I remember listening to this on CBC - Brave New Waves around 1am in the morning back in the early 80's.

I remember looking into who was stephen Biko and what was the issues at hand in South Africa.

I lived in a very small fishing / logging town on the BC coast and Africa (anyone of any colour) was rare except for the First-Nations kids that would kill us everytime we played Lacrose.

This song opened my eyes to Racial issues more than almost any other single event
(except for Dr.Seuss's Sneetches)- That is vital for childrens reading
Philip Glass - Target Destruction
(Dec 09, 2005 - 09:10)
This doesnt work for me... maybe flight of the bumblebee or something else ... but not this

I feel like its a soundtrack to a 70's cartoon or something like that
Dar Williams - Play the Greed
(Dec 09, 2005 - 08:54)
Nice Lyrics... boppy beat with a message... now only if someone could put this kind of intelligent lyrics into a Rap tune that the majority of the lazy youth would hear on thier MTV.

My Morning Jacket - Gideon
(Dec 09, 2005 - 08:44)
I wonder if they have listend to U2? Ummmm maybe

Dirty Vegas - Days Go By (acoustic)
(Dec 09, 2005 - 07:42)
I like this version ... at first I thought it was one of the Finn brothers singing then I heard the chorous and I got what it was / who it was

Very nice... shows that they more talent I gave them credit for
The Wailin' Jennys - Arlington
(Dec 08, 2005 - 15:44)
Wow... this is tight tight lyrics ... you dont get this good in a day
Joe Jackson - Fools in Love (Live)
(Dec 08, 2005 - 11:42)
Joe's best song ever is "I'm the Man" ... I used to get threats from the ape who lived below me that I played it too loud

Man I used to turn that up something serious

(just before I moved out I put the speakers face down and played it cranked)
Thea Gilmore - Ever Fallen In Love
(Dec 08, 2005 - 11:15)
Alright ... Its driving me nuts WHO DID the origional?

I love this version but its making me try to figure out who did it initially
Cowboy Junkies - The Stars of our Stars
(Dec 08, 2005 - 10:58)
I remember my rocker friends freaking out hearing for the first time a Dinosaur Junior tune being covered by the Junkies.

I remember there eyes opening to a new world of music.

Very cool band... I saw them and Blue Rodeo a long time ago it was a wonderful night.
Venus Hum - Soul Sloshing
(Dec 08, 2005 - 09:48)
I hear Yazz upstairs at erics, or old Erasure, OMD some great retro Synth going on there

Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc.
(Dec 08, 2005 - 09:45)
I have to admit I like it... you got to go to the UK to get any Hip-Hop that has any imagination or intentness.

Besides it breaks up all the Hippie stuff that I constantly hear on this radio station.

All you No-Cal hippies smoking blunts and living in geometric domes can do with a little Hip Hop to keep you honest

Björk - Bachelorette
(Dec 08, 2005 - 08:32)
She is probably one of the most inventive women in music there is

Not to mention she can punch notes that very few women can do from low to high with such strength and conviction...

Try that J-low!

Three little women of music that amaze me; Bjork, Sinead & Christina (I dont care for her music but her voice is amazing)

I would love to see a video with Missy Elliot and Bjork...

Pearl Jam - Given To Fly
(Dec 07, 2005 - 14:57)
Eddie ... dont go anywhere without your life-vest
Kings of Convenience - Homesick
(Dec 07, 2005 - 14:48)
I love it... folky 60's stuff reproduced to the generation that will never own an LP or know what a 45 is or looks like.

Man... this is funny to listen too

in 30 years maybe they will reproduce Rage Against the Machine and display it as new
Sufjan Stevens - Jacksonville
(Dec 07, 2005 - 11:49)
I have heard this song quite a bit on Radio Paradise... it does get plaid I thing a little too much (there is alot out there that is better)

Music programming isnt easy it can be repetative... but I think this song can be put back in the sleeve and put back on the shelf for a while
The Tragically Hip - Courage
(Dec 06, 2005 - 10:47)
I love the video ... I want a Boston Bruins sweater just like it

Especially with like Bobby's #4 on the back
The Tragically Hip - Courage

Lost at Last - Diamond Body
(Dec 06, 2005 - 10:21)
Jra wrote:
If I hear one more woman with a half-decent voice singing ridiculously spacy and lame lyrics to a repetitive electronic background, I'm gonna go find her and throw an acoustic guitar at her. Or maybe a book of Bach sheet music... ?!

I agree... I can see all the hippies of Pacific North West dancing around like fir trees in the wind to this crap... all the draft dodgers that lived in my home town would totally be grooving to this stuff...

Break out the crystals and pyramids and incense
Tori Amos - Winter
(Dec 06, 2005 - 09:32)
Kate Bush Jr.
Love and Rockets - All in My Mind
(Dec 06, 2005 - 09:16)
Now we need Ying & Yang & FlowerPot Man - Tones on Tail to finish it off

Peter Murphy / Love & Rockets - all in the morning
Very nice collection
California Guitar Trio - Caravan
(Dec 06, 2005 - 09:00)
No.No.No
Please GOD No.

Why has thou forsaken me?
Steve Earle - Copperhead Road
(Dec 06, 2005 - 08:33)
This song has such a pure sound... the drums on the into very very crisp and punchy.

Very well produced and sound is pure

Too bad Steve liked the needle as much as he did... it took him so long to get that monkey off his back that his career may never totally recover
Arctic Monkeys - Fake Tales Of San Francisco
(Dec 06, 2005 - 08:23)
Reminds me of the Jam or early Elvis Costello
Sheryl Crow - Redemption Day
(Dec 06, 2005 - 08:02)
I love Sheryls work ... but for some reason I dont care for this one (1-out of 100) isnt bad
Peter Murphy - Cuts You Up
(Dec 06, 2005 - 07:55)
I remember the days of BAUHAUS... all dressed in black with burgundy hair, pointy black shoes and far far too much of the hemp (and I was the sober one)

When Peter when off to create Love Hysteria, it totally changed how I look at him and his music

The sound is still similar, but I love it still after all these years

Here’s to Bella Lugosi's Dead

Thanks Radio Paradise

The Killers - All These Things That I've Done
(Dec 05, 2005 - 14:41)
I love it... its so nice to see artists that can actually play, write and sing songs

Kinda has an 80-90's feel to it (Cure... Echo... etc)

Jerry Douglas, Russ Barenberg & Edgar Meyer - The Hymn Of Ordinary Motion
(Dec 02, 2005 - 12:19)
I think any young person thinking of playing the guitar should listen to this before thinking of being an "axe man"

This music is absolutely fantastic to work to
Sinéad O'Connor - Downpressor Man
(Dec 02, 2005 - 12:18)
My God can she punch the notes... for such a small person she hits notes with such strength....

She is a goddess... and I would gladdly take her with all her faults over 1 million of the pop queens that are covering the radio and video plays of the World

Linsay, Britteney, Jessica - all of them sit down shut up

let a real artist perform
Derek and the Dominoes - Have You Ever Loved A Woman
(Nov 25, 2005 - 12:37)
That totally reminds me of a blues bar we used to go to after work ...

awsome jam sessions and down right hurting lyrics about getting messed up by a woman
Stone Roses - Fools Gold
(Nov 25, 2005 - 11:58)
Manchester sound ... doing raves on mind altering drugs ... dancing with half naked women with a "Cat in the Hat" hat on my head

for some reason it all seemed very cool...
My god to be young again...

four beer now and I need a nap
Sons & Daughters - Dance Me In
(Nov 25, 2005 - 11:56)
Please dont play this anymore ... it reminds too much of sloppy indie bands of the punk days
Khachaturian - Sabre Dance
(Nov 21, 2005 - 14:42)
Totally reminds me of when I was about 18 and came home after a long night of mind altering drugs that rhyme with (placid)

I remember my mom running around the house cleaning and getting breakfast ready for my dad before he left for work.

I remember humming this music to my self and giggling like an idiot while she rushed around.

I know that my synapses weren’t firing correctly but man it was funny... I think I talked to my dog about it for a good 4 hours later

Ahhh to be young again (with brain cells to waste)

Mich Gerber - Zumurud
(Nov 18, 2005 - 10:14)
Reminds me of Peter Gabriel's Passion soundtrack
there is another guy from Morroco called UCef that is pretty cool as well

I like it great to work too
The The - Dogs of Lust
(Nov 18, 2005 - 09:45)
He is really one guy that hires guns to help out "Jonhny Mar" from the smiths comes to mind

That aside I think "Giant" from Soul Mining album by far is one of the best tunes from the 80's

the beats at the end have been ripped off by almost every hip hopster since

Berlin - The Metro
(Nov 18, 2005 - 09:08)
God I was in love with this lead singer when I was a new-waver so long long ago

Reminds me of early Gary Numan, early INXS
ahhh the 80's
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Over And Over Again (Lost and Again)
(Nov 17, 2005 - 15:08)
I wonder if they have heard of a band called the talking heads?

Do you think?
Maybe?
Lucinda Williams - Righteously
(Nov 17, 2005 - 10:10)
Is this twang fake or what?
It sounds fake or forced to fit the rhyming structure

I like the beat, session musicians are awsome but the lyrics sound fake and forced

Silly sounding
and no I dont have a stick up my A**
The Tragically Hip - Scared
(Nov 15, 2005 - 12:11)
I like the Hip, and love the early work that they did (Road Apples especially) is a magical album

They dont seem as relevant to me anymore but I would have loved to see them land commercial success in the US for all their hard work trudging through tours in Canada for years.

Alas, they aren’t pretty, and in the music industry (especially now) strait teeth in your mouth are more important than the words that come out of it.

Love the hip though
Bruce Cockburn - A Dream Like Mine
(Nov 14, 2005 - 14:59)
Great finger picking...probably one of the best and I met him years ago at the Stein Valley festival (north of Whistler) and he was really really nice to hang around with....

I do find his topics of choice pretty dark (I normally dont turn on Bruce when I want to forget problems)

His voice can drain after a while, but he is probably one of the best artists Canada has ever created (next to William Shattner doing Simple People, or Lucy in the Skies with Diamonds)
Sons & Daughters - Dance Me In
(Nov 14, 2005 - 07:15)
Sounds really Indie.... They need to clean the sound and tighten up the whole package a little

Nice... but to be honest there is a lot better out there that Radio Paradise could play

Kinda reminds me of early 80's punk in Vancouver at the "Smiling Buddah"
Rusted Root - Magenta Radio
(Oct 20, 2005 - 08:54)
Wow... sounds like "Spirit of the West"

Kinda like English cooking - Mushy, Overdune & Bland
Rusted Root - Magenta Radio
(Oct 20, 2005 - 08:54)
Wow... sounds like "Spirit of the West"

Kinda like English cooking - Mushy, Overdune & Bland
Powderfinger - My Happiness
(Oct 20, 2005 - 07:47)
This song reminds me of my little girls (4 & 2) running to me after I have been away on business... and how they are so excited to see me when I return home..

That time between road trips is magical and we are living life burning the candle at both ends trying to get as much time
And how they react when I have to leave again...

Love the song.. totally reminds me of my girls everytime I think of it...
AfroCelts - Ayub's Song - As You Were
(Oct 19, 2005 - 14:44)
I love the blend of styles.... very cool

Buddy Holly - Not Fade Away
(Oct 19, 2005 - 11:47)
What an amazing talent and the most tragic case where he had more talent and creativity of most of the MTV talent pool combined.

The more I listen to Buddy Holly or Johnny Cash the more I realize how lucky we all are to have such talent recorded for our listening pleasure.

Air - La Femme D'Argent
(Oct 19, 2005 - 10:08)
I never knew the French to be sooo Funky ... I normally hate french music ...
But this stuff rocked
Like a sniffer of good ice-wine on a quite winters night
very very smooth sound

Poi Dog Pondering - Bury Me Deep
(Oct 19, 2005 - 07:35)
I kinda hope that Radio Paradise would bury this song deep... deep into the archives never to be seen or heard again

kinda like Waterboys .... but not as refined or polished vocally

you can hear better in any Nova Scotia bar or Newfoundland kitchen
The Tragically Hip - Pigeon Camera
(Oct 18, 2005 - 13:29)
I remember them in the Town Pump in Vancouver... I remember our mouths dropped when they started doing new material from Road Apples... I thought, "My GOD what is this we are witnessing?"

It was one of the most intense and powerful shows I have ever seen...

Big Daddy - Once In A Lifetime
(Oct 14, 2005 - 13:33)
Love it Love it Love ... what a great version... I just need my big oversized suit and jump around

The American Analog Set - Hard to Find
(Sep 30, 2004 - 15:07)
Toe Tapping ... Head Bobbin and I think it they used a vibe to hit those single notes to finish the melody.... very very nice tune...

Breathy soft and melodic.... very nice music to sort of grove to while working....

Appliance - Pacifica
(Sep 30, 2004 - 15:02)
I have to admit ... reminds me of music from my teens of the early new wave days ... Like the hook on the bass... very catchy

Echo and the Bunnymen sort a thing... very very cool
