Arcade Fire - Half Light II (No Celebration)

These guys just don't do it for me.

Peter Gabriel - The Rhythm of the Heat
(May 24, 2013 - 06:34)
The man is a musical GOD.

Merrie Amsterburg - Walking On The Moon
(Nov 11, 2012 - 05:00)
I like this cover :)

Foo Fighters - Everlong
(Nov 11, 2012 - 03:37)
ick.  Why does Bill think this hideous crap is appropriate for 6:37 on a Sunday morning?  :mute:

Elvis Costello - Peace, Love and Understanding
(Nov 10, 2012 - 11:46)
Gawd I hate this version.  {#Doh}

Tracy Chapman - Smoke And Ashes
(Sep 07, 2012 - 06:51)
-7 points for way to many "baybayyyyy"s

Elbow - Mirrorball
(Feb 18, 2012 - 05:22)
Can't believe I had this rated as a 7.   —->  8
LOVE this tune.

Lemonheads - The Outdoor Type
(Feb 04, 2012 - 05:18)
I like it.

Reed Foehl - Once An Ocean
(Feb 04, 2012 - 04:52)
Nice song, but WOW.  Blatant CSNY ripoff...
"Find the cost of freedom,
buried in the ground"...

The Chemical Brothers - Hanna's Theme (w/Stephanie Dosen)
(Feb 04, 2012 - 04:47)

Florence and The Machine - Shake It Out
(Dec 29, 2011 - 06:19)
There's something intriguing about this band.
She's not a singer though, she's a shouter.
I like hearing them but I don't think I could ever listen to more than one song at a time; couldn't imagine listening to an entire disk.
A solid 6, maybe even a seven after a couple beers.

Travis - Eyes Wide Open

Though, Trick of the Tail, and Wind and Wuthering weren't bad albums...

Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
(Dec 12, 2011 - 15:32)
The old Genesis stuff always makes me perk my ears up and head for the rating page.
A solid 9.

Loudon Wainwright III - The Swimming Song
(Sep 16, 2011 - 07:26)
An awesome songwriter on a par with John Prine.

Ray LaMontagne - Repo Man
(Aug 25, 2011 - 10:05)
Ray is maturing nicely.

The Raconteurs - Yellow Sun
(Aug 25, 2011 - 10:04)

Elbow - High Ideals
(Aug 23, 2011 - 09:14)
Love these guys.

Shannon McNally - Down and Dirty
(Aug 11, 2011 - 08:40)
Totally thought this was Joan Osborne.

Bottle Rockets - Coffee Monkey
(Aug 11, 2011 - 07:55)
Awesome.  I kicked that particular monkey off a couple years ago, but this perfectly describes the feelings.

Mocean Worker - Shooby Shooby Do Yah!
(Aug 08, 2011 - 12:22)
Oh yeah, in the groove baybeeee!!!

Otis Redding - Hard To Handle
(Aug 08, 2011 - 11:51)
The Grateful Dead's Rod McKernan did this song better than anyone else ever did.

Sigur Rós - Untitled Track 4
(Aug 07, 2011 - 07:32)
Christalmighty, if I want to hear someone singing one word over and over I'll get on grooveshark and put on some hare krishna chanting.  What is this crap?

Catherine Wheel - Black Metallic
(Aug 07, 2011 - 07:10)
3 chords and two lines of lyric, repeated over and over and over and over and over........

would be uber-boring if it wasn't so annoying.

Florence and The Machine - Cosmic Love

 Alafia wrote:
I'm sorry Florence.  I've tried, I've REALLY tried, but I just can't make myself like your voice.  Maybe a couple voice lessons?

I've finally figured out what it is; she doesn't really sing, she YELLS.  Every line is exactly the same, very little variation in tone or volume.  It annoys me.  Hopefully with time she'll learn some control.  She definitely has potential.

Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick

I'm not as big a Jethro Tull or Who fan as Bill is, but I can give this advice for both: If you don't listen with the volume turned up as loud as you can stand it, it's not possible to appreciate this sort of pompous rock at all. That's not to say that you will appreciate it that way, but if you treat it as background music it can only drive you crazy.

It is demanding music, incredibly complex and many-layered.  Commands your attention.  I respect that.  I can see why some of our younger listeners might not appreciate it though.

Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick
(Aug 02, 2011 - 07:57)
An awesome classic I never get tired of.  Great to hear it in its entirety.  Thanks Bill!

Not Drowning, Waving - The Magician
(Aug 01, 2011 - 11:00)
Hmm...  cool stuff, I like it.

Guster - Dear Valentine
(Jul 29, 2011 - 06:14)
Ditto {#Arrowd}  I like Guster, but this one is ponderous, tedious and boring.  Not their best effort.

John Hiatt - Walk On (live)
(Jul 21, 2011 - 08:49)
I mean, I know he's an awesome songwriter, and all that, but GAWD, his singing sucks.  And his guitar playing ain't much better.

Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)
(Jul 21, 2011 - 07:44)
Wow.  Possibly one of the most inane songs I've ever heard.  Seriously.
3 —> 2

Florence and The Machine - Cosmic Love
(Jul 21, 2011 - 03:12)
I'm sorry Florence.  I've tried, I've REALLY tried, but I just can't make myself like your voice.  Maybe a couple voice lessons?

Mumford & Sons - White Blank Page
(Jul 20, 2011 - 06:43)
I like a lot of M&S, but THIS one made me get down off the ladder, come into the other room to give it a 1.

Kristin Hersh - Echo
(Jul 17, 2011 - 08:40)
I like it.

Band of Horses - Factory
(Jul 15, 2011 - 12:16)
My rating for this song drops every time I hear it, and I've been hearing it WAAAAAYYY too much.

Bruce Springsteen - Brilliant Disguise
(Jul 08, 2011 - 08:11)
Kitschy pop not worthy of the Boss, or RP.

Built To Spill - Gone
(Jul 05, 2011 - 07:01)
Lesse, ponderous, jerky, repetitive, flowless pounding...
Yep, Built to Spill alright.

Duke Ellington - How High The Moon
(Jul 02, 2011 - 16:48)
I love that RP has this kind of stuff in the mix.

Keren Ann - My Name Is Trouble
(Jul 02, 2011 - 04:44)
Kinda nice.  I like it.

Death Cab for Cutie - Doors Unlocked and Open
(Jul 02, 2011 - 04:22)

Robin Trower - Bridge Of Sighs
(Jun 15, 2011 - 12:13)
"THIS one goes to eleven."

The Church - Metropolis
(Apr 11, 2011 - 15:03)

Sounds like some cheesy pop rock band from the 80s.

The Peter Malick Group - Heart Of Mine (w/Norah Jones)
(Mar 21, 2011 - 15:19)
Nice.

Built To Spill - Traces
(Mar 21, 2011 - 13:26)
This band ranks right up there with, say, Foreigner.
Slightly more pleasurable than having my teeth drilled on by the dentist.

EDIT:  cool album cover though.

Elbow - The Birds
(Mar 21, 2011 - 13:05)
Hmmm...  I like it.

Otis Redding - Hard To Handle

Me, I like this version, mostly because the Black Crowes ruined it for me, before I every knew they ripped it off.

I have yet to ever hear a better version than PigPen's.  He OWNED that song.

David Bowie - Golden Years
(Oct 26, 2010 - 05:21)
One of the few DB songs I really like.  Great segue from the Stevie Wonder tune too!

Stevie Wonder - As
(Oct 26, 2010 - 05:18)
ELEVEN.

Prince - Kiss
(Oct 15, 2010 - 06:56)
Ick

Tracy Chapman - Smoke And Ashes

King Alafia's new decree:

All pop musicians from this moment on shall receive 1 lash with a barbed-wire cat-o-nine-tails for every "Baybyyyyyy" in each song they write.

EDIT:  Addendum to the new decree:

1 lash each also for the words "Mama" "Uh-huh" and "Yeah"

David Lindley - Tuna Fish Blues
(Sep 16, 2010 - 11:00)
David Lindley rocks my smelly socks.

Neville Brothers - Fire On The Mountain
(Sep 05, 2010 - 12:33)
Really nice version

T Bone Burnett - It's Not Too Late
(Aug 20, 2010 - 07:16)
A great disk. Surprised at the low rating on this one.

The Sisters of Mercy - More
(Jul 26, 2010 - 13:45)

Travis - Eyes Wide Open

Genesis - Firth Of Fifth
(May 28, 2010 - 16:08)

I wish I'd gotten the chance to see them in this era.  Must've been mind-blowing shows.

Chris Smither - The Devil's Real
(Jan 04, 2010 - 09:37)
My wife's comment about Chris Smither after seeing him live was, "The most physically-unattractive man I've ever fallen in love with."

Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)

 Hannio wrote:

Yes, that is a characteristic of music.  The repetition of a sequence of notes to establish a melody and a mood, and to build thereon.

Very unimaginative and monotonous usage of the repetition characteristic.  Establishes in me only the mood of impatience for it to be over.

The Smiths - There Is A Light That Never Goes Out
(Dec 10, 2009 - 14:23)
I like a lot of the Smiths I've heard here.
Never really listened to the words to this particular song before; now I wish I hadn't.  Utterly stupid.

Anouar Brahem - Stopover at Djibouti
(Nov 30, 2009 - 14:10)
Very cool.

Willie Nelson & Calexico - Señor (Tales Of Yankee Power)
(Nov 18, 2009 - 07:08)
Too bad he sings this great song so flatly and without feeling.  With his voice it could have been so much better than this.

Chris Rea - Nothing To Fear
(Nov 17, 2009 - 09:14)
Cool guitar.

Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)
(Nov 16, 2009 - 09:25)
very repetitive

Built To Spill - Good Ol' Boredom

Florence and The Machine - Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)
(Nov 12, 2009 - 07:49)
this woman's voice gives me a headache.

Son Volt - Afterglow 61
(Nov 12, 2009 - 07:00)
guy can't sing for shit.

Spinning Jennies - Three Minus One
(Nov 10, 2009 - 08:45)
3 minus 1?  Equals what I should give it, a 2.

Kinda catchy though, so it gets a 3.

Talking Heads - Pulled Up
(Nov 09, 2009 - 09:21)
meh.  LOVE the THs, but this is not one of their better efforts.

Lucinda Williams - Hot Blood
(Oct 28, 2009 - 15:36)
Can't believe this only has a 5.7 average.

Aretha Franklin - Chain of Fools
(Oct 28, 2009 - 14:46)
STILL the best version of this song.

The Wailin' Jennys - Take it Down

Florence and The Machine - Girl With One Eye
(Oct 19, 2009 - 05:10)
I like this song less every time I hear it.

Nick Drake - Pink Moon
(Oct 18, 2009 - 08:55)
I'm becoming a very-belated Nick Drake fan.

Grizzly Bear - All We Ask
(Oct 17, 2009 - 14:18)
Haven't really like a lot of GB's stuff I've heard here, but I like this one.

XTC - Dear God
(Oct 17, 2009 - 13:48)
Can't believe this has a 7.5 average.

Sweet - Love Is Like Oxygen
(Oct 15, 2009 - 08:39)
The cheese factor makes this almost enjoyable.  A solid 4.

There's something I can't quite define about this group.  I just like them; I don't know why.

Kings Of Leon - I Want You
(Oct 01, 2009 - 14:59)
At least I can stand to listen to this one.  All the other KoL songs, I have to instamute.

Porcupine Tree - Time Flies
(Sep 21, 2009 - 08:58)
Repetitive and monotonic.  Not up to PT's usual standards.

It was OK the first couple times, but each time I hear it I like it less.

Eric Clapton & Steve Winwood - Can't Find My Way Home (Live)
(Sep 11, 2009 - 15:36)
This is an AWESOME version.

Pixies - Where Is My Mind
(Sep 05, 2009 - 14:48)
I kinda like this song, but for that screechy guitar thing.

Audioslave - Like a Stone
(Aug 31, 2009 - 03:02)
Not a bad song, but the stupidest "guitar solo" ever.

The Tea Party - Winter Solstice
(Aug 30, 2009 - 03:30)
Very Jimmy Page-ish

Foo Fighters - Everlong
(Aug 30, 2009 - 03:25)
This song is the musical equivalent of having my teeth drilled at the dentist's.

Kaki King - Second Brain
(Aug 27, 2009 - 16:01)
I think I must get this disk.

Patty Griffin - One Big Love
(Aug 18, 2009 - 15:13)
One of my fave Emmylou songs.  This version is pretty cool.  Like it.

Patrick Watson - Close to Paradise
(Aug 18, 2009 - 10:20)
Voted "Most likely to rip off David Gilmour", senior year in high school.

Bob Seger - You'll Accompany Me
(Aug 17, 2009 - 13:44)
There are much better tunes on this disk than this one...

Beat Farmers - California Kid
(Jul 25, 2009 - 15:11)
Now that's what I call eclectic.

Dead Reckoners - Rocky Road
(Jul 23, 2009 - 07:54)
I like it.  More of this group please!

Ekova - Siip Siie
(Jul 08, 2009 - 16:53)
The kinda stuff I listen to RP for.

Frank Zappa - Willie The Pimp
(Jun 22, 2009 - 06:54)
Yeah.

Oh, yeah.

Foo Fighters - Times Like These
(Jun 18, 2009 - 17:02)
I've tried to like this band.  Really tried.  Just.  Can't.

Silversun Pickups - The Royal We
(Jun 17, 2009 - 05:29)
This band isn't too bad, but all their songs sound alike to me.

Scorpions? On RP?
How about a little Ratt, and Poison, while we're at it?

Louis Armstrong - Skokiaan (South African Song)

I would also argue that the rather high overall rating for this song suggests that many RP listeners are like me and enjoy Bill's sparing playing of Queen.

Second time this week for this one, I'm pretty sure.
I think once a month or so would be sufficient...

Renaissance - Mother Russia
(May 20, 2009 - 04:07)
Nice to hear Rennaissance again. Been a long time.
I was into them back int the late 70s early 80s.

Breaks Co-op - The Sound Inside

Spare, sparse and powerful.  A minimalist masterpiece.

Waifs - Lighthouse

NUMBER ONE.  On my must-see-live list of musicians.
Whenohwhen will they ever come to the Eastern US???

1989... Get over it already.

Afro Celt Sound System - When You're Falling (w/ Peter Gabriel)

I hold very, very few musicians in the same regard as I do Peter Gabriel.
In fact, maybe nobody else...   He is unique in the world.

George Winston - The Venice Dreamer

Pretty darn good for a Sunday morning in Maine too...

Always liked George Winston.

Reminds me of Annie Haslam and Rennaissance.

Habib Koité & Bamada - I Mada

Holy mackerel, if you ever get the chance, DON'T pass it up.

Hank Dogs rocks.  I'd love to see them live.

The Charlatans - Blackened Blue Eyes
(Feb 10, 2009 - 13:37)
I would not be sad if I never heard this one again...

Morphine - Whisper
(Feb 03, 2009 - 15:53)
I'm not a huge fan of a lot of their stuff, but I love this tune.

Patti Smith - Because The Night
(Feb 03, 2009 - 15:51)
Wow, I've been slacking off; I should've 1'ed this LONG ago...

(Feb 02, 2009 - 17:29)
This song does not belong in the Radio Paradise playlist.

Jean-Luc Ponty - Ethereal Mood

One of my faves from University.  Good memories.

Bruce Lash - Psycho Killer
(Jan 13, 2009 - 15:17)

Frank Zappa - Dirty Love

Yeah.  Frank.

Pete Yorn - For Nancy
(Nov 13, 2008 - 16:02)
Pete Yorn's preference for endless repetitions of massively-distorted power chords do not endear him to me...

Ani DiFranco - Smiling Underneath
(Nov 12, 2008 - 08:15)
Don't get me wrong; I LOVE Ani.  I think she is one of the best singer/songwriters to come out in the past decade.  But this song is not up to her usual standard.  The music is weak, the lyrics feel awkward and strained.  I hope the rest of the disk is better than this.

Midnight Oil - Underwater
(Nov 12, 2008 - 05:21)
I can't stand most of this band's music,
but I really like this tune.  Great groove!

Willie just sounds.... uninspired. And Calexico... lackluster for them. Jerry's version is lightyears more compelling.

Er, okay lets review. There is no synthesizer, and no drum machine. These are real people playing real instruments, in realtime. I dont' know if this was dubbed or not, I kind of doubt it, considering this is 1975, and people tended to walk into studios and record for 3 days straight.

What you're hearing is an electric piano, a real drummer, an awesome bass player, and of course Beck on lead.

This is real music. This is waht the drum machines and synthesizers were trying to reproduce - and, for the most part, failed miserably.

While this song, and Prince (or whatever he's called now) do deserve respect, I always pray for some good songs to come on after this song, and get it out of my head...
Antje Duvekot - Dandelion

(Jun 01, 2006 - 09:39)
I like Fleetwood Mac before they got all "Nicks-y"

Don Ross - Afraid to Dance
(May 30, 2006 - 10:49)
Wow.
Another to add to the must-have list...
Oasis - Champagne Supernova
(May 23, 2006 - 06:16)
yup.

still a 1.

Sucko-Barfo :puke:
Trout Fishing In America - Not Fade Away
(May 18, 2006 - 04:56)
most excellent groove!

EDIT: how's the rest of the disk? anyone have it? similar tunes or what?
Suzanne Vega - Gypsy
(May 10, 2006 - 06:02)
I'm of mixed opinion on most of her stuff: some of it is extremely facile IMHO, but I've always liked this one a lot.
Cowboy Junkies - Sweet Jane
(May 09, 2006 - 08:56)
Utterly unremarkable and forgetable.

Tom Petty - It's Good To Be King
(May 09, 2006 - 05:18)

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
(May 05, 2006 - 09:06)

It makes for all-night dancing. We used to do just that in West Africa when I was in the Peace Corps. You just get into the groove, and before you know it, 8 hours (and sometimes as many beers) have gone by. It can be very trance-inducing.
The music of West Africa is one of my favorite genres. Mali in particular has spawned a style like nowhere else.
Cowboy Junkies - Black Eyed Man
(May 04, 2006 - 05:11)
Hey! It's a Cowboy Junkies song that doesn't immediately
send me into a somnolent daze...
I knew there must be a least one: nice to have finally found it!
Tom Petty - Yer So Bad
(May 02, 2006 - 12:16)
TP is at least as good as, say, Bob Seger, or Steve Miller.
Grateful Dead - Me & My Uncle
(May 02, 2006 - 04:50)
Used to dance my ass off to the "Tex-Mex" sets whenever they would play them...
I remember so fondly those desert shows in NM, AZ and NV: the warm sun, the dust, spectacular sunsets, the smell of herb in the air...

Aaahhh... *drifts off into contemplative reverie...*
Tom Petty - Wildflowers
(Apr 14, 2006 - 07:43)

Sonic Youth - Hits of Sunshine (For Allen Ginsberg)
(Apr 04, 2006 - 06:16)
like the groove...
Grateful Dead - Help On The Way/Franklin's Tower
(Apr 03, 2006 - 10:02)
LOVE this album, and this song combo used to be one of my favorites to hear at shows...
Hank Dogs - 18 Dogs
(Mar 31, 2006 - 11:03)
This one has moved from the 'must get' list to the 'have' list, and spends a lot of time in the CD player. Lots of good tunes on it.
Meghana Bhat - Really Really Happy
(Mar 24, 2006 - 05:34)
I LIKE this...
Dobie Gray - Drift Away
(Mar 22, 2006 - 09:06)
...and this is "eclectic"---- HOW???

not a bad song, all-in-all, but I don't want to hear it on RP, thanks.
The Beatles - A Day In The Life
(Mar 10, 2006 - 04:20)
This LP changed my life...
Toots & The Maytals - Pressure Drop (w/ Eric Clapton)

The Ditty Bops - Ooh La La
(Oct 23, 2005 - 07:38)
Just saw them w/ Nickel Creek: enjoyed the show a LOT. Lots of fun. In a word- Quirky. (but very talented- and friendly- they hung out after their set chatting w/ folks and pimping their CD. I bought one!)
EDIT: a word of warning though, to potential CD-buyers; this song IS very different from a lot of the other music on the disc...
Melissa Etheridge - Bring Me Some Water
(Oct 18, 2005 - 05:18)
Melissa Etheridge makes my teeth hurt...
R.E.M. - Strange Currencies
(Oct 16, 2005 - 12:33)
Possibly their worst song ever.
Elton John - Levon
(Oct 14, 2005 - 16:25)
I dunno... Loved this album back in the day- guess I've just heard it too many times, (and was subconsciously hoping to not hear it here on RP)

David Copperfield by Dickens...

"From Wikipedia"
The character is notable for his cloying humility, obsequiousness, and general insincerity. His constant references to David as "Master Copperfield" are repeated so often by Dickens that they quickly seem insincere. He is the central antagonist of the later part of the book. David first meets him when he is living with Mr. Wickfield and his daughter Agnes. Uriah works as Mr. Wickfield's clerk and because of Mr. Wickfield's alcoholism Uriah controls most of his life and business. He eventually succeeds in having himself raised to being a full partner in the business. His eventual ambition is to marry Agnes and gain control of the Wickfield fortune. Like most of Dickens' villains, greed is his main motivation. Heep is eventually stymied by Mr. Micawber, Thomas Traddles, with help from David and Agnes. Once his fraud and treachery is unmasked, he persists in hounding Micawber and Copperfield. He is sent to prison where he is a model prisoner.

I can understand why some people would avoid it, though it seems not to be the way I'm made. I took a break, and when I was thinking about opening myself up that way again, it was terrifying. It still is scary, but also exhilarating (not that I'm involved in anything- just the prospect that it could be a prospect is a big step).

Having children is terrifying, too. To have such love and such responsibility.....

I'll stop now.

I miss the journals.

Yep. And for me the children thing is for my next life, after I've made more progress myself...

Some thoughts for your morning/afternoon coffee:

Love, like truth and beauty, is concrete. Love is not fundamentally a sweet feeling; not, at heart, a matter of sentiment, attachment, or being "drawn toward." Love is active, effective, a matter of making reciprocal and mutually beneficial relation with one's friends and enemies. Love creates righteousness, or justice, here on earth. To make love is to make justice. As advocates and activists for justice know, loving involves struggle, resistance, risk. People working today on behalf of women, blacks, lesbians and gay men, the aging, the poor in this country and elsewhere know that making justice is not a warm, fuzzy experience. I think also that sexual lovers and good friends know that the most compelling relationships demand hard work, patience, and a willingness to endure tensions and anxiety in creating mutually empowering bonds.

For this reason loving involves commitment. We are not automatic lovers of self, others, world, or God. Love does not just happen. We are not love machines, puppets on the strings of a deity called "love." Love is a choice -- not simply, or necessarily, a rational choice, but rather a willingness to be present to others without pretense or guile. Love is a conversion to humanity -- a willingness to participate with others in the healing of a broken world and broken lives. Love is the choice to experience life as a member of the human family, a partner in the dance of life, rather than as an alien in the world or as a deity above the world, aloof and apart from human flesh.

Carter Heyward
Passion for Justice

Sounds pretty right on to me...
Implied but not stated is the terrifying risk and vulnerability that accompanies the attempts to perform those activities. I say "attempts" because for me it's been something I have struggled with and will probably continue to struggle with my entire life (we're not automatic "risk-takers" either). The choice has to be made over and over and over... I think it's the reason so few people are successful at finding real "love".

That is the Maine I'm from. I have yet to meet in person anyone from RP. I have to say I have mixed feelings about the eventual occurrence, but from what I've seen of the recent meetups I think overall the odds are good I'll get along with most folks from here. This song is quite intelligent, actually. I admire the reference to Samuel Beckett's Waiting For Godot. Here's one of the passages from Godot where we hear about the gravedigger:

Astride of a grave in a difficult birth. Down in the hole, lingeringly, the grave-digger puts on the forceps. We have time to grow old. The air is full of our cries. (He listens.) But habit is a great deadener.

Such a dark message for such a bouncy tune.

There is a young boy who works for Godot by taking care of sheep. His brother takes care of goats. And according to Matthew 25: 31-46, sheep go to heaven and goats go to hell.

There are other religious references in Cake songs.
