Foo Fighters - Everlong (Nov 11, 2012 - 03:37) | ick. Why does Bill think this hideous crap is appropriate for 6:37 on a Sunday morning? :mute:
|
Elbow - Mirrorball (Feb 18, 2012 - 05:22) | Can't believe I had this rated as a 7. —-> 8 LOVE this tune.
|
Reed Foehl - Once An Ocean (Feb 04, 2012 - 04:52) | Nice song, but WOW. Blatant CSNY ripoff... "Find the cost of freedom, buried in the ground"...
|
Florence and The Machine - Shake It Out (Dec 29, 2011 - 06:19) | There's something intriguing about this band. She's not a singer though, she's a shouter. I like hearing them but I don't think I could ever listen to more than one song at a time; couldn't imagine listening to an entire disk. A solid 6, maybe even a seven after a couple beers.

Bottle Rockets - Coffee Monkey (Aug 11, 2011 - 07:55) | Awesome. I kicked that particular monkey off a couple years ago, but this perfectly describes the feelings.
|
Sigur Rós - Untitled Track 4 (Aug 07, 2011 - 07:32) | Christalmighty, if I want to hear someone singing one word over and over I'll get on grooveshark and put on some hare krishna chanting. What is this crap?
|
Catherine Wheel - Black Metallic (Aug 07, 2011 - 07:10) | 3 chords and two lines of lyric, repeated over and over and over and over and over........
would be uber-boring if it wasn't so annoying.
|
Florence and The Machine - Cosmic Love (Aug 03, 2011 - 04:31) | Alafia wrote: I'm sorry Florence. I've tried, I've REALLY tried, but I just can't make myself like your voice. Maybe a couple voice lessons?
I've finally figured out what it is; she doesn't really sing, she YELLS. Every line is exactly the same, very little variation in tone or volume. It annoys me. Hopefully with time she'll learn some control. She definitely has potential.
|
Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick (Aug 02, 2011 - 08:02) | hcaudill wrote: I'm not as big a Jethro Tull or Who fan as Bill is, but I can give this advice for both: If you don't listen with the volume turned up as loud as you can stand it, it's not possible to appreciate this sort of pompous rock at all. That's not to say that you will appreciate it that way, but if you treat it as background music it can only drive you crazy.
It is demanding music, incredibly complex and many-layered. Commands your attention. I respect that. I can see why some of our younger listeners might not appreciate it though.
|
Guster - Dear Valentine (Jul 29, 2011 - 06:14) | Ditto I like Guster, but this one is ponderous, tedious and boring. Not their best effort.
|
John Hiatt - Walk On (live) (Jul 21, 2011 - 08:49) | I mean, I know he's an awesome songwriter, and all that, but GAWD, his singing sucks. And his guitar playing ain't much better.
|
Band of Horses - Factory (Jul 15, 2011 - 12:16) | My rating for this song drops every time I hear it, and I've been hearing it WAAAAAYYY too much.
|
Built To Spill - Gone (Jul 05, 2011 - 07:01) | Lesse, ponderous, jerky, repetitive, flowless pounding... Yep, Built to Spill alright.
|
Built To Spill - Traces (Mar 21, 2011 - 13:26) | This band ranks right up there with, say, Foreigner. Slightly more pleasurable than having my teeth drilled on by the dentist. EDIT: cool album cover though.
|
Otis Redding - Hard To Handle (Mar 19, 2011 - 16:15) | alanthecowboy wrote: The Black Crowes' version is just a rip off of the Grateful Dead version, which rocked the song up a bit. If you like their version better, credit the Dead, not the 'Crowes.
Me, I like this version, mostly because the Black Crowes ruined it for me, before I every knew they ripped it off.
I have yet to ever hear a better version than PigPen's. He OWNED that song.
|
David Bowie - Golden Years (Oct 26, 2010 - 05:21) | One of the few DB songs I really like. Great segue from the Stevie Wonder tune too!
|
Tracy Chapman - Smoke And Ashes (Sep 27, 2010 - 08:28) | King Alafia's new decree:
All pop musicians from this moment on shall receive 1 lash with a barbed-wire cat-o-nine-tails for every "Baybyyyyyy" in each song they write.
thatisall EDIT: Addendum to the new decree:
1 lash each also for the words "Mama" "Uh-huh" and "Yeah"

|
Chris Smither - The Devil's Real (Jan 04, 2010 - 09:37) | My wife's comment about Chris Smither after seeing him live was, "The most physically-unattractive man I've ever fallen in love with."

Grizzly Bear - All We Ask (Oct 17, 2009 - 14:18) | Haven't really like a lot of GB's stuff I've heard here, but I like this one.
|
XTC - Dear God (Oct 17, 2009 - 13:48) | Can't believe this has a 7.5 average.

|
Kings Of Leon - I Want You (Oct 01, 2009 - 14:59) | At least I can stand to listen to this one. All the other KoL songs, I have to instamute.

It was OK the first couple times, but each time I hear it I like it less.
|
Foo Fighters - Everlong (Aug 30, 2009 - 03:25) | This song is the musical equivalent of having my teeth drilled at the dentist's.
|
The Old Ceremony - Poison Pen (Jun 16, 2009 - 16:44) | Tragic. This song has contracted that rare rapid aging disease, Progeria. It's getting old fast...

I would also argue that the rather high overall rating for this song suggests that many RP listeners are like me and enjoy Bill's sparing playing of Queen.
Second time this week for this one, I'm pretty sure. I think once a month or so would be sufficient...
|
Renaissance - Mother Russia (May 20, 2009 - 04:07) | Nice to hear Rennaissance again. Been a long time. I was into them back int the late 70s early 80s. Saw them once in Boulder and enjoyed it a lot.
|
Kathleen Edwards - In State (May 13, 2009 - 05:12) | Can we hear some other songs of hers? I like this one, but it's starting to get old...
|
Blue Oyster Cult - Don't Fear The Reaper (May 07, 2009 - 17:06) | I was psyched to hear this tune come up in the playlist just because I immediately knew the comments were gonna be a hoot, and I was not disappointed...
MORE COWBELL!!!
EDIT: and O M G, LOOK at that album cover! Did we really LOOK like that back then?
|
Waifs - Lighthouse (May 07, 2009 - 14:46) | NUMBER ONE. On my must-see-live list of musicians. Whenohwhen will they ever come to the Eastern US???
|
Habib Koité & Bamada - I Mada (Apr 13, 2009 - 05:26) | Just saw these guys Friday night. Holy mackerel, if you ever get the chance, DON'T pass it up. They are utterly amazing live!
|
Genesis - Firth Of Fifth (Apr 13, 2009 - 05:04) | This song sounds funny without having the rest of the disk played in front of it.
|
Moe - New York City (Apr 05, 2009 - 16:06) | Just saw them for the first time, in Boston last night. Holy wow, they ROCK. Check 'em out live sometime (try to ignore the over-medicated 20-somethings...)
|
ZZ Top - I'm Bad I'm Nationwide (Mar 19, 2009 - 10:10) | The last ZZ disk I paid any attention to. Listened to it nonstop Freshman year in University.
They went downhill after this, IMO.
|
Mari Boine - Vuoi Vuoi Mu (Mar 14, 2009 - 15:56) | THIS is why I listen to Radio Paradise!
SO cool to hear music from around the world, opening my ears to things I would never hear otherwise.
Thanks to the uploader, and to Bill and Rebecca.
More "world" music please!

Iron & Wine - Jezebel (Mar 03, 2009 - 07:40) | Saw Kris Delmorst do a nice cover of this at Stone Mountain Arts Center a couple weeks ago. Great song!

Euphoria - Delirium (Feb 12, 2009 - 04:48) | I like this tune; I've downloaded it and put it on a mix.
|
Morphine - Whisper (Feb 03, 2009 - 15:53) | I'm not a huge fan of a lot of their stuff, but I love this tune.
|
Pete Yorn - For Nancy (Nov 13, 2008 - 16:02) | Pete Yorn's preference for endless repetitions of massively-distorted power chords do not endear him to me...

Oh, to have been there, with Tower of Power, and the Feat in their prime...
|
Ani DiFranco - Smiling Underneath (Nov 12, 2008 - 08:15) | Don't get me wrong; I LOVE Ani. I think she is one of the best singer/songwriters to come out in the past decade. But this song is not up to her usual standard. The music is weak, the lyrics feel awkward and strained. I hope the rest of the disk is better than this.
|
Midnight Oil - Underwater (Nov 12, 2008 - 05:21) | I can't stand most of this band's music, but I really like this tune. Great groove!
|
Cake - Comfort Eagle (Nov 11, 2008 - 09:17) | He knows about your party He is calling you DOOOOOOOD!

Kings Of Leon - Closer (Nov 10, 2008 - 06:24) | After actually listening to it, it doesn't suck TOO bad, at least for a Kings of Leon song... Upping it to a 3.

|
Peter Tosh - Mystery Babylon (Oct 22, 2008 - 14:37) | There are many good reggae musicians out there, but for ME, Tosh's voice will always be THE voice of reggae.
|
Kings Of Leon - Sex On Fire (Oct 21, 2008 - 14:18) | I'm sorry, but for the life of me, I can not figure out what people find so appealing about this band. I have not heard a single song from them that I like (and I've tried!).

James - Getting Away With It (Live) (Oct 06, 2008 - 17:25) | 2

Built To Spill - Traces (Aug 29, 2008 - 06:11) | Every song I hear from this band just sounds repetitive, jerky and unimaginative.
|
Kings Of Leon - True Love Way (Jul 10, 2008 - 09:35) |
"Kings of Leon: taking suckage to a whole new level."
This band's suckage is off the suck scale.
|
Interpol - The Scale (Jun 16, 2008 - 07:49) | Does this band play any songs that AREN'T repetitive, jarring and strident?
|
The Waifs - Crazy Train (Mar 05, 2008 - 11:04) | LOVE the Waifs.
Can't believe I never heard of them before RP.
Are they still together? Touring?
EDIT: I bought this double live set over a year ago, and it's still one of my most-played. The whole thing is FANTASTIC.

Annie Lennox - Waiting In Vain (Feb 14, 2008 - 16:30) | Overproduced.
She has a voice that could have done this song well,
but she should've kept it simple, like the original.
|
Refreshments - Banditos (Feb 14, 2008 - 15:43) | I was on the verge of turning this off 'til the chorus caught my ear, and I started listening to the words.
Excellent.

|
Sinéad O'Connor - Mandinka (Feb 07, 2008 - 16:08) | I had to look and see what everyone's comments on this song were, and was interested to see all the "I don't like her music, but I like this song" comments. I like her music a lot, but this song sucks.
|
Swati - Blackjack (Feb 07, 2008 - 15:33) | A nice song, but
Bill, you're overplaying it.
|
Willie Nelson & Calexico - Señor (Tales Of Yankee Power) (Jan 29, 2008 - 14:58) | When you look at the song and artists, in the songlist, you think, "this is gonna be something..."
and then, somehow, everybody involved seems to miss the mark.
Willie just sounds.... uninspired. And Calexico... lackluster for them. Jerry's version is lightyears more compelling.

Last time it played, I didn't catch which song it was in the playlist, and I've been wondering who the musician is ever since. Glad I heard it again.
If the rest of the disk is this good, it's DEFINITELY going on to the 'must get' list.

What you're hearing is an electric piano, a real drummer, an awesome bass player, and of course Beck on lead.
This is real music. This is waht the drum machines and synthesizers were trying to reproduce - and, for the most part, failed miserably.
Excellently put!

Jeff Beck - Freeway Jam (Nov 16, 2007 - 07:14) | Man.

Prince - When Doves Cry (Nov 02, 2007 - 05:32) | While this song, and Prince (or whatever he's called now) do deserve respect, I always pray for some good songs to come on after this song, and get it out of my head...

It makes for all-night dancing. We used to do just that in West Africa when I was in the Peace Corps. You just get into the groove, and before you know it, 8 hours (and sometimes as many beers) have gone by. It can be very trance-inducing.
The music of West Africa is one of my favorite genres. Mali in particular has spawned a style like nowhere else.

David Copperfield by Dickens...
"From Wikipedia"
The character is notable for his cloying humility, obsequiousness, and general insincerity. His constant references to David as "Master Copperfield" are repeated so often by Dickens that they quickly seem insincere. He is the central antagonist of the later part of the book. David first meets him when he is living with Mr. Wickfield and his daughter Agnes. Uriah works as Mr. Wickfield's clerk and because of Mr. Wickfield's alcoholism Uriah controls most of his life and business. He eventually succeeds in having himself raised to being a full partner in the business. His eventual ambition is to marry Agnes and gain control of the Wickfield fortune. Like most of Dickens' villains, greed is his main motivation. Heep is eventually stymied by Mr. Micawber, Thomas Traddles, with help from David and Agnes. Once his fraud and treachery is unmasked, he persists in hounding Micawber and Copperfield. He is sent to prison where he is a model prisoner.
SPOILER!
It's about the only Dickens I haven't read- I was gonna go check it out this weekend....

Ray, I liked this quote for the truth it applies to so many types of love. I agree with you about the terror of the vulnerability of risking again, in terms of personal love. I can understand why some people would avoid it, though it seems not to be the way I'm made. I took a break, and when I was thinking about opening myself up that way again, it was terrifying. It still is scary, but also exhilarating (not that I'm involved in anything- just the prospect that it could be a prospect is a big step).
Having children is terrifying, too. To have such love and such responsibility.....
I'll stop now.

Bobby Bare Jr. - The Monk At The Disco (Oct 06, 2005 - 06:49) | betterdaze wrote: Some thoughts for your morning/afternoon coffee:
Love, like truth and beauty, is concrete. Love is not fundamentally a sweet feeling; not, at heart, a matter of sentiment, attachment, or being "drawn toward." Love is active, effective, a matter of making reciprocal and mutually beneficial relation with one's friends and enemies. Love creates righteousness, or justice, here on earth. To make love is to make justice. As advocates and activists for justice know, loving involves struggle, resistance, risk. People working today on behalf of women, blacks, lesbians and gay men, the aging, the poor in this country and elsewhere know that making justice is not a warm, fuzzy experience. I think also that sexual lovers and good friends know that the most compelling relationships demand hard work, patience, and a willingness to endure tensions and anxiety in creating mutually empowering bonds.
For this reason loving involves commitment. We are not automatic lovers of self, others, world, or God. Love does not just happen. We are not love machines, puppets on the strings of a deity called "love." Love is a choice -- not simply, or necessarily, a rational choice, but rather a willingness to be present to others without pretense or guile. Love is a conversion to humanity -- a willingness to participate with others in the healing of a broken world and broken lives. Love is the choice to experience life as a member of the human family, a partner in the dance of life, rather than as an alien in the world or as a deity above the world, aloof and apart from human flesh.
Carter Heyward
Passion for Justice
Sounds pretty right on to me...
Implied but not stated is the terrifying risk and vulnerability that accompanies the attempts to perform those activities. I say "attempts" because for me it's been something I have struggled with and will probably continue to struggle with my entire life (we're not automatic "risk-takers" either). The choice has to be made over and over and over... I think it's the reason so few people are successful at finding real "love".

But really, when you get up to New England it is just such a mess. How can you call that little piece of map a state? Here in Texas that might qualify as a county. A small county.
Exactly why I live in Maine, having come from the west; it's really the only state up here that really has any elbow room...

And no wonder many of us are confused. Here in Missouri there are cities and towns with names like Paris, California, Mexico, Louisiana, Versailles... the list goes on!
I live about 20 mins from this sign, which points to different towns in Maine

Thats about it really.
Just make sure to bring your hiking boots! The parks are a living nightmare unless you're willing to walk more than 3 or four miles from the parking lots. Once you get out away from the crowds you'll see some truly amazing stuff...

Did you try the All of Europe option. Apallingly I scored 51%. I can do the big countries, but I can't quite place Lithuanea, Latvia, Etheopia, Macedonia, Slovenia, etc etc
I got an 87%. That's a fun website; I'm gonna send the URL to our history/geography teachers- I bet they'll love it.

Of course. But you're dealing with a sample size that assures some outliers, and the proximity/easy border crossing makes it more likely the "challenged" will show up there. For a Brit to show up in Vancouver requires a little more savvy, so you're getting more of the cream of the crop there.
I do think in general Americans are not too well educated geographically though... I remember a study a few years back in which something like 50% of American adults couldn't even identify the United States on a world map.
EDIT: Hi Lynne!

Yeah, early-season heavy gloppy crap that froze overnight. It's actually really pretty and not real cold (altho last night the wind was blowing), but the first blast of the season is always a shocker.

Since you can't seem to leave each other alone, could you just get a room elsewhere? There are people trying to enjoy this little closet, free of politics and/or bashing.
Please? Pretty please?
Note, CB that I am not in my normal STFU mode....will it help, is the question? (i.e. will you contain yourself for just a few more days?)
Ya know, I've had the word "Brobdingnagian" stuck in my head since yesterday. I wonder why? It's just such a FUN word. I've been trying to think of a way to get it into a sentence...

Sorry, out for a bit.
I got the pic. but not with the resolution I hoped for.
Funny thing was, there was a man with a piece of cardboard
with a hole in it. The eclipse projected through the hole onto
the sidewalk perfectly. A 2cent piece of cardboard vs my $600
camera, cardboard wins hands down.
Maybe you should have taken a picture of the projection onto the cardboard...
Alternatively, maybe you could have hand-held some kind of smoked glass in front of your camera to dim the light...

I thought the job was going better since you won your battle with the Powers That Be.
Yep it is, I was just sweating through a massive software glitch that was making it impossible to run a testing program they run every kid in the district through twice a year. I think we have it sorted out now *crosses fingers*...
Alafia praying to all the deities of the universe that the rest of his week goes more smoothly and the glitch really is fixed...
EDIT: enjoy your coffee! think I'm gonna go do the same.

The Grateful Dead did a fantastic cover of this song as well. And, of course - the Black Crowes... well, their version is fun.
:nodhead: Pig Pen doing it live is still my favorite...

The Ditty Bops - Ooh La La (Sep 01, 2005 - 09:45) | Whoa. COOL. Never heard them before this.
Yet ANOTHER for the 'must have' list...
More of this band please.

Cake - Sheep Go to Heaven (Jul 01, 2005 - 14:00) | mark wrote:
This song is quite intelligent, actually. I admire the reference to Samuel Beckett's Waiting For Godot. Here's one of the passages from Godot where we hear about the gravedigger:
Astride of a grave in a difficult birth. Down in the hole, lingeringly, the grave-digger puts on the forceps. We have time to grow old. The air is full of our cries. (He listens.) But habit is a great deadener.
Such a dark message for such a bouncy tune.
There is a young boy who works for Godot by taking care of sheep. His brother takes care of goats. And according to Matthew 25: 31-46, sheep go to heaven and goats go to hell.
There are other religious references in Cake songs.
Whoa. Namaste Brother

Pearl Jam - Alive (Jun 29, 2005 - 07:28) | Hmmmmmm... I never used to like Pearl Jam at all back when they were popular. somehow it sounds ok to me now hearing it on RP (and not just this song either)
|
Grateful Dead - Althea (Jun 28, 2005 - 11:50) | What'd the two deadheads say when they ran out of drugs?
"Dude.
This band SUCKS."
As a deadhead I'm allowed to tell that joke. I think I saw them ~75 times. I gave this a 10 - makin' me happy right now...

Greg Ellis - Form 1 (May 26, 2005 - 07:33) | I KNEW I heard Mickey Hart in there somewhere!
Most Excellent.

Angelique Kidjo - Voodoo Child (Slight Return) (May 03, 2005 - 15:39) | I spent two years in the Peace Corps in Benin, where Angelique is from. I have unfortunately never seen her in concert but hear that she puts on an absolutely mind-blowing show. I listen to this and think, "She comes from one of the 30 poorest countries in the entire world." I know well the area where she grew up. THAT blows my mind. More power to her!

Tama - Ta'aba (Apr 14, 2005 - 05:18) | Oh yes, more music from all around the world please!
