|
Alabama 3 - Woke Up This Morning (Sep 29, 2006 - 19:23) | Oh, I knew I heard this somewhere (I don't have cable, but my folks do).
This song puts me in mind of Jim White's Handcuffed to a Fence in Mississippi.

The Features - Blow It Out (Sep 09, 2006 - 21:06) | If you're happy and you know it/turn the volume up and blow it out...
Sound advice if ever there was some!
|
The Postal Service - Such Great Heights (Sep 09, 2006 - 19:43) | I guess I'm just used to the Iron and Wine version from the Elizabethtown soundtrack. It adds a delicacy that the lyrics deserve. Love the song, dislike the production.

I second that one. Amazing video, amazing band; get the Crowded House Recurring Deam cd/dvd collection if you don't already have it. It starts with Mean to Me, which has dear sweet Paul seemingly leading a yoga class on the telly; Neil showing off some windup toys with then-a-toddler son Liam watching; and Nick giving the vital stats on his classic car...a bit which failed to show up when the vid was broadcast on MTV.

In a word, the song is "fun."
I think it's fun as well. I like the German vs. English version. C'mon, Bill, if you're willing to go for this one, give your spouse what she wants and play some Monkees! What have you got to lose? LOL

Marc Broussard - Home (Apr 17, 2006 - 11:23) | brickdog wrote: HOT DAMN!!!
Home
Rolling down the road
Going no where
Guitar packed in the trunk
Somewhere round mile marker 112
Papa started hummin the funk
I gotta jones in my bones before we know
We were singing this melody
Stop the car pulled out the guitar
Halfway to New Orleans
Said take me home
Take me home
Could feel the sun about to rise
When I realized we ad nothing to fear
It's just me and my daddy and a kid named Cope
Making music that nobody would hear
And then the sun let up and it split the night
Said take me home
Take me home
Said take me home
Said take me home
This greyhound is delta bound mama
Baby boy done finally found
Said this greyhound is delta bound mama
Said take me home
Hot damn you should have felt the groove
Like I was swimming in a sea of soul
The sun was rising and the day was hot
And we was all about to lose control
My daddy turned his face up towards the sky
And I knew that there was nothing to lose
I felt the crow breathe in and I closed my eyes
And we disappeared into the groove
Said take me home
Said take me home
Take me home
Said take me home
Straight from the water
Straight from the water children
You don't know nothing about this
Take me home
Said take me home
I've been hearing this for weeks and never knew it was Marc Broussard. Amazing voice, great song!

Pink Floyd - Mother (Mar 31, 2006 - 08:46) | This song is creepy and the album is thoroughly depressing (which is, I guess, its point).

Incubus - Drive (Mar 29, 2006 - 11:04) | I admit, I'm a little surprised to hear this song on RP, but what the hell, variety means just that--playing all sorts of music. And for the record, I like this one too.

George Harrison - Crackerbox Palace (Mar 24, 2006 - 11:25) | Brilliant! I actually have this lp. Maybe not his biggest or best, but this song is certainly lovely (and I think the video and certainly, the album photos, were shot at Harrison's estate).

The Smithereens - Blood And Roses (Mar 24, 2006 - 09:59) | Saw them at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ in the late 80s. They rocked!
Best thing about seeing these guys live is that, very much like Chris Isaak or Peter Himmelman, they lighten up the often somber-sounding material with some great playing, smiles and a few onstage antics.

Cat Power - The Moon (Mar 24, 2006 - 08:38) | This was quite a yawn...getting a little sick of it. Needed to wake up. The Pretenders will help. C'mon, let's get a little rowdier!

Queen - Keep Yourself Alive (Mar 15, 2006 - 12:07) | Not their best, but one of my personal favorites. My older daughter thought Freddie was the bomb when she was a little girl. Hard to tell her that he'd died before she was born.
And BTW, the so-called lifestyle the "group" promoted, was just Freddie's (I recall he once said, "I'll sleep with anything"). It's not like he was militant about it; hell, the man didn't want anyone to know about his lifestyle or his illness.
Anyway, great track. Early Queen really is the best. Keep it up Bill!

The Nevilles are great! :D
I have been to Jazzfest twice and it's an experience like no other. Hot, humid, crazy, fun. Local and national acts, something IMO not to be missed. Want to take my kids there at some point. And miraculously, the show is to go on this year!

As the Young-Holt Trio they had had a hit with the more r&b-flavored "Wack Wack"--here they get smoother and more uptown, anticipating the stylings of Philly soul. What a classic!
I agree. Awesome.

Peter Himmelman - Fly So High (Jan 26, 2006 - 14:48) | Peter is a great artist--I have been priviledged to see him perform a few times within the last few years. He's amazing on stage, because his material can be somber, and he'll just rock out. He's also well-known for creating songs onstage, much to the pleasure (and embarassment) of those watching. However...this has got to be my LEAST favorite album of his; some of the songs are great, but it just doesn't hang together well, and the production is too much and overwhelms the songs in some cases.
Try any Himmelvaults cd (especially #2) or his last two albums, Unstoppable Forces or Imperfect World. Peter's website: www.peterhimmelman.com

Madeleine Peyroux - Between The Bars (Jan 26, 2006 - 14:02) | aflanigan wrote: This powerful song by Elliot Smith, written (seemingly) from the point of view of a full blown enabler, who may be getting sucked inexorably into their own addiction, practically begs to be drenched in melancholy, heartache, and resignation. Smith's cryptic version, emotions almost robotically held in check, is powerful and moving, but I think Madeleine's version really brings the emotion of the song home. I guess those who prefer Smith's version like the contrast of the emotions of the song with the understated way it is sung. I think if you're going for the melancholy, you gotta go all the way.
Bienvenue encore, Madeleine!
Oh yes, amazing. Emotional, but not overblown. I guess the Billie Holiday comparisons are going to stick with this one.

The Specials - Message to You Rudy (Jan 06, 2006 - 12:24) | huebdoo wrote: I can remember the early 80's and nothing like this had been heard before in Canada... I remember having brave new waves on and hearing this for the first time it must have been around 80 or 81
Ska was such a great thing to see... it was really the first time I saw White and Black boys playing music together and all grooving to it
Not like the black guy trying to fit into the white peg or vice versa.
The ska movement was the best... great drinking and jumping around music...
Monkey Man is still one of my favourites to this day... my little girls think I am insaine when I jump around the kitchen making breakfast to it.
They are so square
Yeah, kids today, huh? I personally don't care, I know I'm cool. I remember this time too, I have some live soundtrack (can't recall the name of it just now) that had all sorts of great live tracks from the great ska bands of the time. It just ain't what it used to be, eh?

Joe Jackson - Fools in Love (Live) (Jan 06, 2006 - 12:18) | Essbee wrote: MORE JOE JACKSON!
Oh yeah! Saw him while he was touring in preparation for the Big World album--amazing.
|
Kan'Nal - Gypsy (Jan 06, 2006 - 11:27) | I like this one better every time I hear it.
|
Supergrass - Low C (Jan 06, 2006 - 10:18) | Sounds like a lost Lennon track, for sure. How else would I know it's Supergrass?
|
Nick Drake - Pink Moon (Jan 05, 2006 - 14:46) | Ender43 wrote: Beck to Cream to Drake...
Real nice vibes going on here, real nice...
Oh yeah! Wonderful, just wonderful.
|
R.E.M. - Sitting Still (Jan 03, 2006 - 14:03) | Great song, lyrics make NO sense, but oh well.
I agree, amazing day today, thanks Bill!
|
David Bowie - Sound and Vision (Dec 30, 2005 - 14:16) | Yeah, sounds an awful low like D'yer Mak'er at the very start. Dunno why I never noticed that before.
|
Nick Drake - Fly (Dec 30, 2005 - 12:46) | Who needs meditation (medication??) when you can hear:
Even in the Quietest Moments
Blackbird
Fly
time for my nap now...but in a good way.
|
Curtis Mayfield - Superfly (Dec 30, 2005 - 12:25) | This is the first 45 I ever bought with my own money, I hate to say how many years ago. At that tender age I was unaware of Curtis Mayfield's importance in music; I just liked it and still do.
|
Neil Finn - Anytime (Dec 30, 2005 - 10:28) | First time hearing this one. His voice just grabs me right away. I love this man.
|
Björk - Human Behavior (Dec 23, 2005 - 12:07) | I knew this was Bjork before she even started singing--it's that type of recording.
|
Psychedelic Furs - Pretty In Pink (Dec 19, 2005 - 14:41) | pdhski wrote:
this is the original version, not the soundtrack cut with additional overdubs. Kinda neat & raw.
Yes, it's fun to try and figure out which is which. The one released on the soundtrack is just a little bit smoother on the vocals, a little more amped up on the guitar.
|
Coldplay - Don't Panic (Dec 19, 2005 - 08:33) | I really like this song. My daughter (almost 12) really likes it as well, we had to steal the Garden State soundtrack to get it back from her.
|
Led Zeppelin - Travelling Riverside Blues (Dec 13, 2005 - 10:34) | Wow, that opening riff must be the one echoed on the John Mellencamp song Stones in My Passage. Amazing. God, I love Zep. Great music never changes.
|
Thea Gilmore - Ever Fallen In Love (Dec 08, 2005 - 11:16) | huebdoo wrote: Alright ... Its driving me nuts WHO DID the origional?
I love this version but its making me try to figure out who did it initially
Pete Shelley and the Buzzcocks. They used to call themselves "the Beatles with power chords."
|
Thea Gilmore - Ever Fallen In Love (Dec 08, 2005 - 11:15) | LPCity wrote: This song would probably have a much wider audience if the lyrics were "ever had sex with someone you shouldn't have had sex with".
Well, as we used to say back in college, "Never sleep with anyone crazier than yourself."
|
Led Zeppelin - Trampled Underfoot (Dec 06, 2005 - 08:27) | Love it, love it, love it. A bad track from Zep almost always beats out a "good" track from pretenders to the throne.
Yeah, I grew up in the 70s. Wanna make something of it?
|
Dire Straits - Industrial Disease (Nov 30, 2005 - 08:36) | Still one of my favourite tracks from Dire Straits. Very clever songwriting, a funny and insightful protest song.
|
Love - Alone Again Or (Nov 22, 2005 - 07:14) | JTRox8 wrote:
Yes, I definitely like Calexico's version better. In fact, it's what introduced me to Calexico as a band...this is just..ok...
D'oh! No wonder it sounds familiar. Great song regardless.
|
Joe Cocker - Darling Be Home Soon (Nov 15, 2005 - 09:46) | Vogelfrei wrote: I'm awfully fond of the Lovin' Spoonful's original rendition, and this certainly can't replace it, but I give Cocker credit for bringing his own unique signature to this, and to any tune he sings.
By the way, what's the second-to-last line of the chorus?
My guess has been that it's "since I toddled" and I can almost make sense of that, but I don't know.
You're right about that line.
This song is a beauty, and Joe Cocker puts a great spin on it--a little less white-bread, a little more soulful.
|
Modern English - I Melt With You (Nov 15, 2005 - 08:50) | Darlington wrote: Original would be a 7 or an 8.
This one's merely a 4.
I gave this version a 6, and would agree with the above. Whassup?
|
Tom Petty - Breakdown (Nov 14, 2005 - 08:44) | After all this time, that song can still make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
|
Oasis - Wonderwall (Nov 09, 2005 - 09:08) | Personality-wise they're tossers, but this album is great. And nice segue from Walking 2 Hawaii... seamless in fact.
|
The Shins - Gone for Good (Nov 03, 2005 - 14:33) | anniebear wrote: 8O ....the shins?!?!? Well frell, I thought this was Wilco, go figure
Yeah me too.
|
Death Cab For Cutie - Summer Skin (Nov 03, 2005 - 12:42) | Does anyone else think their singer sounds like...some OTHER artist?? Like Jack White is starting to sound like Robert Plant? I also think Jeff Tweedy from Wilco sounds like, I dunno, maybe Jeff Buckley.
|
Split Enz - Six Months in a Leaky Boat (Nov 02, 2005 - 09:51) | Lazy8 wrote:
I'll second the 'great song' comment, but where do they mention the Faulklands?
Judging from the lyrics, someone in the UK has a vivid imagination...
|
The Smithereens - Behind the Wall of Sleep (Nov 02, 2005 - 09:13) | Saw these guys on the NJ shore years ago, they were amazing. They offset the melancholy of most of their songs by cutting up onstage. What a great group.
|
Finn Brothers - Suffer Never (Oct 31, 2005 - 07:58) | The more I hear from either of the Finn brothers (especially Neil), the more I like them. Thanks RP!
|
The Shins - Those to Come (Oct 28, 2005 - 09:05) | A kiss on your molten eyes
I don't totally get it, but the image is intriguging
(spelling?).
|
Gabriel Rios - Ghostboy (Oct 27, 2005 - 10:37) | Sorry, but I like it. Good stuff, very catchy. And I like Manu Chao too.
|
Crowded House - Into Temptation (Oct 13, 2005 - 13:33) | I have always loved Crowded House, but hearing them anew on RP has forced me to purchase the Very Best Of. And so it is.
|
Big Country - Chance (Oct 05, 2005 - 13:15) | I bet I haven't listened to that album in more than 10 years. What a great record and a great band.
|
Manu Chao - Me Gustas Tu (Oct 05, 2005 - 11:55) | Yamson wrote: ...Y me gusta esta canción, pero quiero más "Bongo Bong!"
Absolutely!
|
The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again (Oct 05, 2005 - 10:38) | If this song fails to move you in some way, check your pulse.
Really great version in the Who movie The Kids Are Alright. As one who never saw them live, that was a real treat.
RIP Keith Moon, you were a MONSTER on that kit!
|
They Might Be Giants - Birdhouse In Your Soul (Oct 04, 2005 - 11:21) | marz_cat wrote: Lincoln and Flood, too close to call for me.
"When I was driving once I saw this painted on a bridge..I don't want the world, I just want your half."
Oh yeah! I have them both. Clever doesn't begin to describe TMBG.

English Beat - Save It for Later (Oct 03, 2005 - 11:14) | thewiseking wrote: the 80s werent so bad after all.
That's what I keep telling my kid, but I don't think she believes me. LOL
|
Anna Nalick - Breathe (Oct 03, 2005 - 08:59) | Excellent song, though starting to be overplayed a bit on commercial radio. Wow.
|
Apocalyptica - Ruska (Sep 23, 2005 - 11:51) | I like this, it sounds like it should be used in a soundtrack for the movie Potemkin.
|
Manu Chao - Bongo Bong (Sep 21, 2005 - 10:54) | A total crack-up for sure. We have this on a Putomayo (sp???) kids' album. Great!
|
The Beatles - You Never Give Me/The End (Sep 21, 2005 - 10:14) | psycholynx wrote: Just play the whole damn album, why don't cha!
No, seriously, I'd like to hear the whole album.
Actually, yeah, that'd be great! But at some point we'd have to get up and go somewhere....
|
The Beatles - You Never Give Me/The End (Sep 21, 2005 - 10:13) | Heck, most times I would be happy (on "rock" radio) if they'd just start with Golden Slumbers. I'm glad my standards are higher now. I do have to add, though, that I very much enjoy Joe Cocker's version of She Came in Through the Bathroom Window.
|
Kirsty MacColl - In These Shoes? (Sep 20, 2005 - 12:33) | Since this song ends on such a kinky note, I think it should be paired with "You Can Leave Your Hat On", any version.
|
Crowded House - When You Come (Sep 19, 2005 - 10:17) | flandersdog wrote: smashing, burning, exploding...all the ingredients of a good love song!
You got that right.
|
Massive Attack - Protection (Sep 19, 2005 - 09:14) | The EBTG website confirms that Tracey of EBTG did indeed guest on some tracks from Protection by Massive Attack. So I'm not going crazy, at least, not today.
|
Harry Manx - Shadow Of The Whip (Sep 19, 2005 - 09:08) | Sure do like Harry Manx, but he reminds me, irresistably, or Mark Knofler. Not exactly a bad thing, though.
|
Massive Attack - Protection (Sep 19, 2005 - 09:07) | Is this the same vocalist from Everything But The Girl? Because that's what she sounds like to me.
|
Peter Himmelman - One Shot (Sep 16, 2005 - 07:26) | Too bad there isn't more Himmelman played on RP. His songs blend in well. His latest is well worth the cost, great stuff. He's an amazing musician and I'm glad to say I have seen him live several times.
|
Chris Isaak - Dancin' (Sep 14, 2005 - 13:12) | The song that hooked me on Chris Isaak. The original from the first album, of course. Wow.
|
The Killers - All These Things That I've Done (Sep 13, 2005 - 13:26) | annanyc wrote: I can't help it, but I love this song. I think it's fun and catchy pop and there's nothing wrong with that. And as for the "idiotic" repetition regarding the soul, soldier bit, why is it that so often on these boards, I see people complain about stuff like that? Why must every song contain pulitzer-worthy sonnets set in perfect iambic pentameter?
I can interpret those lines and imagine a particular meaning behind them. They may be simple, but sometimes there's just an easy joy in that. And I think that being easy is refreshing sometimes.
Amen!
|
Nick Drake - Fly (Sep 13, 2005 - 10:48) | Um, did I stumble into another forum by mistake?
Aah, there you are, Nick. Thanks.
|
David Bowie - The Man Who Sold The World (Sep 02, 2005 - 12:27) | Excellent trippy song, I am still trying to absorb its meaning...
I have heard the Nirvana version of this one, but I first heard it years ago from Richard Barone (of the late, lamented NJ pop group The Bongos). His version is amazing as well; you can tell Mick Ronson is definitely one of Richard's guitar heroes.
|
Al Stewart - Roads To Moscow (Aug 11, 2005 - 13:10) | OMG, first the Battle of Evermore--I was just thinking recently how I've not heard that one forever--and now Al Stewart to bring us another battle. Amazing. This is why I'm hooked.
|
Josh Rouse - It's The Nighttime (Aug 11, 2005 - 12:01) | beatlechick wrote:
Not so sure I would allow that but to be honest with you, the lyrics remind me of a song that Prince wrote from Sign O' the Times called "If I Was Your Girlfriend" where he talks about would the girl let him wash her hair, amongst other things.
Well it depends on how much of a guy's feminine side might appeal to a particular gal.
PS: Prince's song "When U Were Mine" states, "I used to try on all your clothes." A little less risky when Cyndi Lauper sang it, I guess...
It's the nighttime baby, don't let go of my love. Great stuff.

U2 - Surrender (Aug 05, 2005 - 14:25) | brandog wrote: :mute:

|
U2 - Surrender (Aug 05, 2005 - 14:25) | What an amazingly mature work, yet full of youthful passion. It's held up well; my 11-yr-old wants her own copy of this album.
|
Aretha Franklin - Rock Steady (Aug 05, 2005 - 14:01) | melissa wrote: what it is , is soooouuulllll baby!
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: when I grow up, I want to be black. Maybe I should amend that to say: when I grow up, I wanna sing like Aretha.
Never imitated, never duplicated. what it is...
|
The Pogues - Dirty Old Town (Aug 04, 2005 - 10:07) | I agree with the last comment. One of the songs that first brought the Pogues to my ears. Is this originally a country song?
Gotta love the album title: Rum, Sodomy and The Lash. Classic.
|
Nick Drake - Northern Sky (Aug 03, 2005 - 11:45) | Wow, it's been great discovering someone like Nick Drake on RP. He was a great talent, to be sure.
|
Kate Bush - The Sensual World (Aug 03, 2005 - 09:34) | My husband's other favorite redhead. Kate Bush is an original. More than overdue for new music from her.
|
The Beatles - Hey Bulldog (Aug 03, 2005 - 07:28) | "Childlike/no-one understands."
Great stuff, very goofy, terrific moment in the film as well.
|
Madness - One Step Beyond (Aug 03, 2005 - 06:39) | Wow, college radio station flashback! I really loved these guys, what amazing musicians.
|
The Shins - We Will Become Silhouettes (Aug 01, 2005 - 14:05) | rainfairy wrote: Overall I prefer the original by The Postal Service. There are moments of folkiness that I began to enjoy but it just wasn't satisfying enough.
See, on the other hand, I like this one better. In fact, when I heard the Postal Service version I was confused--didn't realize there was more than one.
|
Ryan Adams - Let it Ride (Aug 01, 2005 - 11:23) | Good song. I only have the album Gold but might consider this one as well. Right after a whole bunch of others....
|
Elvis Costello - Beyond Belief (Mar 14, 2005 - 10:56) | truly an amazing song, just like the rest of the album. I also love the album "Trust," lots more clever songs.
