Love this song, loved Garden State.

As do I. Oh, good, Frou Frou. This soundtrack rocks.
The Jam - That's Entertainment
(Oct 19, 2006 - 18:09)
Amazing song, as always. Thank you ex-boyfriend John, wherever you may be.
Tom Petty - Square One
(Oct 12, 2006 - 13:56)
Excellent. This was on the Elizabethtown soundtrack last year, great one!
Neil Young - Sugar Mountain
(Sep 29, 2006 - 20:52)
Amazing. Haven't heard that song since...maybe I was still living in NJ at the time.
Alabama 3 - Woke Up This Morning
(Sep 29, 2006 - 19:23)
Oh, I knew I heard this somewhere (I don't have cable, but my folks do).

This song puts me in mind of Jim White's Handcuffed to a Fence in Mississippi.

Francis Dunnery - Too Much Saturn
(Sep 13, 2006 - 18:37)
Yes, still a crack-up after all these months.
The Features - Blow It Out
(Sep 09, 2006 - 21:06)
If you're happy and you know it/turn the volume up and blow it out...

Sound advice if ever there was some!
Manu Dibango - Soul Makossa
(Sep 09, 2006 - 19:54)
Haven't heard this one in about 30 years...OMG...I'm amazed. Thanks, Bill!
The Postal Service - Such Great Heights
(Sep 09, 2006 - 19:43)
I guess I'm just used to the Iron and Wine version from the Elizabethtown soundtrack. It adds a delicacy that the lyrics deserve. Love the song, dislike the production.
OK Go - A Million Ways
(Sep 03, 2006 - 15:01)
Ah such grace, oh such beauty....
Crowded House - Don't Dream It's Over

I can still see that plate breaking at the beginning of the video. This, of course, was back when MTV actually played videos. Yes, I know it's an old and trite statement but I actually used to like watching music videos on MTV back in the day.

I second that one. Amazing video, amazing band; get the Crowded House Recurring Deam cd/dvd collection if you don't already have it. It starts with Mean to Me, which has dear sweet Paul seemingly leading a yoga class on the telly; Neil showing off some windup toys with then-a-toddler son Liam watching; and Nick giving the vital stats on his classic car...a bit which failed to show up when the vid was broadcast on MTV.

The Trash Can Sinatras - Freetime
(Apr 24, 2006 - 11:31)
Nice to hear a lead singer whose voice doesn't seem to recall anyone else. I do love this song.
Cat Power - The Moon

Dull, dull, dull. This girl puts me to sleep.

I respect it for that. It takes me back. I was never a huge fan, but I thank it for the memories.

In a word, the song is "fun."

I think it's fun as well. I like the German vs. English version. C'mon, Bill, if you're willing to go for this one, give your spouse what she wants and play some Monkees! What have you got to lose? LOL
Hoodoo Gurus - Tojo

Sufjan Stevens - He Woke Me Up Again

This song is lovely but has an odd tempo. Still making my mind up about it.
Blind Faith - Can't Find My Way Home
(Apr 20, 2006 - 14:22)
Great song anyway, folks. Definitely a 10.
Thievery Corporation - The Revolution Solution (Feat Perry Farrell)
(Apr 20, 2006 - 13:45)
I like this a lot despite the echo that seems to drive some listeners crazy.
Thea Gilmore - Ever Fallen In Love

(Apr 20, 2006 - 11:50)
Amazing song. The wild thing is, I was listening to this in my car this morning, at about the time it was playing on RP. Coincidence? I think not...
Talking Heads - Once In A Lifetime
(Apr 20, 2006 - 09:44)
What an amazing song. I just LOVED the video way back when as well.
Little Feat - Rock And Roll Doctor
(Apr 19, 2006 - 11:51)
Tasty.
Paolo Conte - Via Con Me

Radiohead - Subterranean Homesick Alien
(Apr 18, 2006 - 11:40)
Frickin' Radiohead. The more I hear them, the less I like this band. Thom Yorke sings like he's in a coma.
Wilco - Jesus, Etc.
(Apr 18, 2006 - 10:25)
Just for a minute I thought this was Jerry Garcia... not necessarily a bad thing.
Zero 7 - In the Waiting Line
(Apr 18, 2006 - 08:35)
Good song, great soundtrack.
Loreena McKennitt - The Mummers Dance
(Apr 18, 2006 - 07:50)
Great recording. Is there another version of this song, same artist? I seem to recall another one being played on local radio.
The Count Five - Psychotic Reaction
(Apr 17, 2006 - 13:38)
I'm too young to have a flashback on this, I think, or maybe I just failed to do enough drugs way back when...but I love the song, great stuff.
Marc Broussard - Home

brickdog wrote:
HOT DAMN!!!

Home
Rolling down the road
Going no where
Guitar packed in the trunk
Somewhere round mile marker 112
Papa started hummin the funk
I gotta jones in my bones before we know
We were singing this melody
Stop the car pulled out the guitar
Halfway to New Orleans

Said take me home
Take me home

Could feel the sun about to rise
When I realized we ad nothing to fear
It's just me and my daddy and a kid named Cope
Making music that nobody would hear
And then the sun let up and it split the night

Said take me home
Take me home
Said take me home
Said take me home

This greyhound is delta bound mama
Baby boy done finally found
Said this greyhound is delta bound mama
Said take me home

Hot damn you should have felt the groove
Like I was swimming in a sea of soul
The sun was rising and the day was hot
And we was all about to lose control
My daddy turned his face up towards the sky
And I knew that there was nothing to lose
I felt the crow breathe in and I closed my eyes
And we disappeared into the groove

Said take me home
Said take me home
Take me home
Said take me home

Straight from the water
Straight from the water children

You don't know nothing about this

Take me home
Said take me home

I've been hearing this for weeks and never knew it was Marc Broussard. Amazing voice, great song!

Joan Osborne - Nobody's Fault But Mine (w/ The Holmes Brothers)

The Smithereens - Blood And Roses

Saw them at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ in the late 80s. They rocked!
Best thing about seeing these guys live is that, very much like Chris Isaak or Peter Himmelman, they lighten up the often somber-sounding material with some great playing, smiles and a few onstage antics.
Cat Power - The Moon

Queen - Keep Yourself Alive
(Mar 15, 2006 - 12:07)
Not their best, but one of my personal favorites. My older daughter thought Freddie was the bomb when she was a little girl. Hard to tell her that he'd died before she was born.

And BTW, the so-called lifestyle the "group" promoted, was just Freddie's (I recall he once said, "I'll sleep with anything"). It's not like he was militant about it; hell, the man didn't want anyone to know about his lifestyle or his illness.

Anyway, great track. Early Queen really is the best. Keep it up Bill!

I have always longed to go to the New Orleans Jazzfest. I have heard about it for years and have talked about going with some friends for a couple of years now.

When, if ever, will the Jazzfest be back? I hear that the fairgrounds where this was held was underwater with the rest of the city. How sad.

The Nevilles are great! :D

I have been to Jazzfest twice and it's an experience like no other. Hot, humid, crazy, fun. Local and national acts, something IMO not to be missed. Want to take my kids there at some point. And miraculously, the show is to go on this year!

As the Young-Holt Trio they had had a hit with the more r&b-flavored "Wack Wack"--here they get smoother and more uptown, anticipating the stylings of Philly soul. What a classic!

Peter is a great artist--I have been priviledged to see him perform a few times within the last few years. He's amazing on stage, because his material can be somber, and he'll just rock out. He's also well-known for creating songs onstage, much to the pleasure (and embarassment) of those watching. However...this has got to be my LEAST favorite album of his; some of the songs are great, but it just doesn't hang together well, and the production is too much and overwhelms the songs in some cases.

Try any Himmelvaults cd (especially #2) or his last two albums, Unstoppable Forces or Imperfect World. Peter's website: www.peterhimmelman.com

This powerful song by Elliot Smith, written (seemingly) from the point of view of a full blown enabler, who may be getting sucked inexorably into their own addiction, practically begs to be drenched in melancholy, heartache, and resignation. Smith's cryptic version, emotions almost robotically held in check, is powerful and moving, but I think Madeleine's version really brings the emotion of the song home. I guess those who prefer Smith's version like the contrast of the emotions of the song with the understated way it is sung. I think if you're going for the melancholy, you gotta go all the way.

Yeah me too.
Death Cab For Cutie - Summer Skin

Does anyone else think their singer sounds like...some OTHER artist?? Like Jack White is starting to sound like Robert Plant? I also think Jeff Tweedy from Wilco sounds like, I dunno, maybe Jeff Buckley.

Judging from the lyrics, someone in the UK has a vivid imagination...
The Smithereens - Behind the Wall of Sleep
(Nov 02, 2005 - 09:13)
Saw these guys on the NJ shore years ago, they were amazing. They offset the melancholy of most of their songs by cutting up onstage. What a great group.
The Cure - Lullaby (extended mix)
(Oct 31, 2005 - 11:04)
Ah, this is the song I was thinking of! Tremendously scary.
Bauhaus - Bela Lugosi Is Dead
(Oct 31, 2005 - 10:57)
Appropriately creepy. But isn't there a Cure song that might fit in here? There must be....
Oingo Boingo - Weird Science
(Oct 31, 2005 - 09:04)
Dead Man's Party would have been a better choice for Halloween.
Finn Brothers - Suffer Never
(Oct 31, 2005 - 07:58)
The more I hear from either of the Finn brothers (especially Neil), the more I like them. Thanks RP!
Big Country - In A Big Country
(Oct 28, 2005 - 09:36)
Great song, great album.
The Shins - Those to Come

I don't totally get it, but the image is intriguging

Gabriel Rios - Ghostboy

Sorry, but I like it. Good stuff, very catchy. And I like Manu Chao too.
Robbie Robertson - Somewhere Down The Crazy River
(Oct 14, 2005 - 11:11)
Love it, love it, love it. Bought a Little Willie John album because of this song.
Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart
(Oct 14, 2005 - 08:59)
Having an 80s flashback...(not always a bad thing).
Crowded House - Into Temptation
(Oct 13, 2005 - 13:33)
I have always loved Crowded House, but hearing them anew on RP has forced me to purchase the Very Best Of. And so it is.
Tom Petty - Crackin' Up
(Oct 10, 2005 - 07:17)
The opening made me think I was going to hear Nick Lowe.
Morrissey - That's Entertainment

More Jam!
Death Cab For Cutie - Your Heart Is an Empty Room

Semisonic - Get A Grip
(Oct 05, 2005 - 14:00)
I wondered what happened to these guys.
Big Country - Chance
(Oct 05, 2005 - 13:15)

If this song fails to move you in some way, check your pulse.

Really great version in the Who movie The Kids Are Alright. As one who never saw them live, that was a real treat.

RIP Keith Moon, you were a MONSTER on that kit!

Excellent song, though starting to be overplayed a bit on commercial radio. Wow.
Massive Attack - Teardrop

That would be correct. Nice.
Apocalyptica - Ruska

I like this, it sounds like it should be used in a soundtrack for the movie Potemkin.
They Might Be Giants - Istanbul Not Constantinople
(Sep 23, 2005 - 11:42)
I know they didn't write this one, but it fits in so well with the odd sensibilities in the rest of their music.
Dead Can Dance - The Carnival Is Over

Sounds like The Blue Nile to me. Any relation?
Manu Chao - Bongo Bong

The Beatles - You Never Give Me/The End
(Sep 21, 2005 - 10:13)
Heck, most times I would be happy (on "rock" radio) if they'd just start with Golden Slumbers. I'm glad my standards are higher now. I do have to add, though, that I very much enjoy Joe Cocker's version of She Came in Through the Bathroom Window.
Guadalcanal Diary - Trail of Tears
(Sep 21, 2005 - 08:52)
Good stuff.
Mark Knopfler - Wild Mountain Thyme
(Sep 20, 2005 - 13:54)
Beauty, eh?
Kirsty MacColl - In These Shoes?
(Sep 20, 2005 - 12:33)
Since this song ends on such a kinky note, I think it should be paired with "You Can Leave Your Hat On", any version.

Roy Orbison - She's A Mystery To Me

Sublime.
Massive Attack - Protection
(Sep 19, 2005 - 09:14)
The EBTG website confirms that Tracey of EBTG did indeed guest on some tracks from Protection by Massive Attack. So I'm not going crazy, at least, not today.
Harry Manx - Shadow Of The Whip
(Sep 19, 2005 - 09:08)
Sure do like Harry Manx, but he reminds me, irresistably, or Mark Knofler. Not exactly a bad thing, though.
Massive Attack - Protection
(Sep 19, 2005 - 09:07)
Is this the same vocalist from Everything But The Girl? Because that's what she sounds like to me.
Zero 7 - Home
(Sep 19, 2005 - 08:30)

The Smithereens - A Girl Like You
(Sep 16, 2005 - 13:51)

Patty Griffin - Long Ride Home
(Sep 16, 2005 - 13:22)
Sad, but lovely.
Peter Himmelman - One Shot
(Sep 16, 2005 - 07:26)
Too bad there isn't more Himmelman played on RP. His songs blend in well. His latest is well worth the cost, great stuff. He's an amazing musician and I'm glad to say I have seen him live several times.
Otis Redding - Hard To Handle
(Sep 16, 2005 - 07:15)
Wow, Chris Robinson totally swiped the vocal... What a great voice Otis had.
Talking Heads - Television Man
(Sep 16, 2005 - 06:52)
I thought this sounded familiar. Time to get the vinyl out & show it to the kids...
Paul Kelly - Won't You Come Around?
(Sep 14, 2005 - 14:26)
Ah, I just love this guy. Great songs, voice a little rough, what else do you need?
Chris Isaak - Dancin'
(Sep 14, 2005 - 13:12)
The song that hooked me on Chris Isaak. The original from the first album, of course. Wow.
Solomon Burke - None Of Us Are Free

I can't help it, but I love this song. I think it's fun and catchy pop and there's nothing wrong with that. And as for the "idiotic" repetition regarding the soul, soldier bit, why is it that so often on these boards, I see people complain about stuff like that? Why must every song contain pulitzer-worthy sonnets set in perfect iambic pentameter?

I can interpret those lines and imagine a particular meaning behind them. They may be simple, but sometimes there's just an easy joy in that. And I think that being easy is refreshing sometimes.

Amen!
Nick Drake - Fly

Thought this was Nick Drake till I checked the playlist.
Lucy Kaplansky - Ten Year Night
(Sep 12, 2005 - 11:17)
Sounds a little like Suzanne Vega (which is meant to be a compliment).
Lucky People Center - Harris
(Sep 12, 2005 - 09:17)
This is why I don't listen to WFMU...

But carry on!
Peter Case - Paradise Etc

"The apocalypse is over but I still owe rent."

Amazing.

The Killers - All These Things That I've Done
(Sep 08, 2005 - 13:00)
Say what you will, I love this band and their cd.
Cigar Store Indians - Get on the Throttle
(Sep 07, 2005 - 08:39)
I love rockabilly (among other things). And musicians have been borrowing from each other since the second generation of musicians was born.
David Bowie - The Man Who Sold The World
(Sep 02, 2005 - 12:27)
Excellent trippy song, I am still trying to absorb its meaning...

I have heard the Nirvana version of this one, but I first heard it years ago from Richard Barone (of the late, lamented NJ pop group The Bongos). His version is amazing as well; you can tell Mick Ronson is definitely one of Richard's guitar heroes.

The Killers - Jenny Was a Friend of Mine
(Sep 02, 2005 - 11:56)
Yes, I agree, very 80s...when my kid tells me she hates the 80s, I tell her that without the 80s we wouldn't have the Killers...
Kirsty MacColl - In These Shoes?
(Aug 24, 2005 - 11:42)
I just love this song. Amazing to hear Kirsty apply her silky voice to such a crazy composition.
The Killers - Mr Brightside
(Aug 22, 2005 - 15:05)
An amazing song by an amazing new group. But they sounded British to me at first.
Beck - Ghettochip Malfunction (Hell Yes)
(Aug 22, 2005 - 09:49)
OK, so this is a white person rapping.....
Blondie - Rapture
(Aug 22, 2005 - 09:45)
Great stuff. I love this song.
Susan Tedeschi - Don't Think Twice, It's All Right
(Aug 12, 2005 - 14:34)
She sings this one like it was written for her. It's effortless, she just sails right through it.
Al Stewart - Roads To Moscow
(Aug 11, 2005 - 13:10)
OMG, first the Battle of Evermore--I was just thinking recently how I've not heard that one forever--and now Al Stewart to bring us another battle. Amazing. This is why I'm hooked.

Not so sure I would allow that but to be honest with you, the lyrics remind me of a song that Prince wrote from Sign O' the Times called "If I Was Your Girlfriend" where he talks about would the girl let him wash her hair, amongst other things.

Well it depends on how much of a guy's feminine side might appeal to a particular gal.

PS: Prince's song "When U Were Mine" states, "I used to try on all your clothes." A little less risky when Cyndi Lauper sang it, I guess...

It's the nighttime baby, don't let go of my love. Great stuff.
Nick Drake - One Of These Things First

George Harrison - Any Road

A genius who is sorely missed. What a sweet soul to be missing from the earth.
Stranglers - Golden Brown

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: when I grow up, I want to be black. Maybe I should amend that to say: when I grow up, I wanna sing like Aretha.

Never imitated, never duplicated. what it is...
Supertramp - Even In The Quietest Moments

Great song. Every day brings another gem like this one. Thanks!
The Pogues - Dirty Old Town
(Aug 04, 2005 - 10:07)
I agree with the last comment. One of the songs that first brought the Pogues to my ears. Is this originally a country song?
Gotta love the album title: Rum, Sodomy and The Lash. Classic.
Nick Drake - Northern Sky
(Aug 03, 2005 - 11:45)
Wow, it's been great discovering someone like Nick Drake on RP. He was a great talent, to be sure.
Kate Bush - The Sensual World
(Aug 03, 2005 - 09:34)
My husband's other favorite redhead. Kate Bush is an original. More than overdue for new music from her.
The Beatles - Hey Bulldog
(Aug 03, 2005 - 07:28)
"Childlike/no-one understands."

Great stuff, very goofy, terrific moment in the film as well.
Madness - One Step Beyond
(Aug 03, 2005 - 06:39)
