Richard Thompson - 1952 Vincent Black Lightning
(Dec 04, 2007 - 09:37)
Goes without saying, a great song writer and performer but it doesn't hit home just what a great guitar player he is until you hear him live. The first time I heard him live I realized all the songs I thought were 2 or 3 guitars was just him and to top it off, it hardly looks like he moves his arm or fingers. All this while he's delivering songs with verses that are different each go around.

One of my favorites.
Emmylou Harris - Goin Back To Harlan

This is the cut, that I listend to on RP, that made me go look at our Emmylou collection, to discover we didn't own it, and in turn I proceeded to buy the CD.

No regrets.

What!!!??? You bought something because you heard it on an Internet Radio station? That can't be. Internet Radio stations don't lead to people purchasing music. That's why they need heavy fees in place to make sure the money goes back to the poor record companies that scrape to make ends meet.

Sarcasm off

I worship at the temple of Emmylou. Like many others her voice conveys so many different things to me all at once. I see her every time she steps close to Chicago. Got my tickets for September at Ravinia already.">

John Prine - Living In The Future
(Apr 11, 2007 - 13:12)
"There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes" Those are the first lyrics from John Prine that smacked me in the face and made me pay attention. I've been a fan ever since.

Another fine product of the Old Town School of Folk Music.
Lucinda Williams - I Lost It
(Aug 15, 2006 - 13:32)
Saw her with Steve Earle in Newport a few years ago. Absolutely fantastic. Great performer.

When peeps say these are the exceptions to not liking Country I think this IS Country. The stuff on most country radio is some amalgamation of singers and writers with the bottom line first and foremost in their minds as they pander to whatever the most popular thought of the day is.
The Beatles - Two Of Us
(Jun 21, 2005 - 12:13)
When I listen to my favorite Alternative Country bands like Son Volt and others I can't help but think this song in particular of the Beatles has impacted and inspired them all.

Two of Us = Alternative Country Music?
Elvis Costello - Spooky Girlfriend
(Jun 21, 2005 - 10:44)
Wow, can't believe the negative responses here for Elvis Costello. Saying you don't like his voice is one thing, but implying he has no talent screams I want to insult someone that's accomplished because it'll make me look cool.

Say what you will about his voice, I like it and think it's unique but I can see how someone wouldn't like it, but there is little doubt to his ability to write great songs. His long career is a testament to this. Besides that, anyone that has seen him in concert knows he leaves nothing on the stage. He gives you every dollars worth for your ticket and then some.

I'll add one more thing, in a time where many musicians seem to think they're the next coming of a god, Elvis is down to earth and a quite likable fellow despite his sparkly boots that scream otherwise.
:D
Richard Thompson - Walking The Long Miles Home
(Jun 06, 2005 - 12:27)
Richard Thompson is an incredible song writer and an even more amazing guitar player. I've seen him play many times and the things he does on the guitar while singing would be a challenge for many guitar players focussed only on playing.

One of his shows is where he does music from the middle ages to the present. It's over 2 hours of non stop music that flies by way too fast. Often he ends it with an incredibly halarious and technically impressive version of Whoops I Did it Again.

This an amazing talent that flies just under the radar. Thanks for playing RP.
The Pretenders - Back On The Chain Gang
(Jun 03, 2005 - 13:22)
Classic.

Chrissy Hind has always had my number.
Ray Charles - UnChain My Heart
(Jun 03, 2005 - 09:02)
I absolutely go nuts for the back up vocals on this tune.
Uncle Tupelo - Still Be Around
(Jun 01, 2005 - 14:11)
More please.
Pearl Jam - Yellow Ledbetter

Is this little wing? Oh, no, it is just Pearl Jam stealing Jimi's music. Sorry...

It's an obvious tribute to Hendrix. :|

Greg Brown - Just A Bum

To you:

I'm allowed to dislike this song. I'm allowed to think it is not sublime. It does not make me wrong. It does not make you wrong. It's MY OPINION.

I hate most Reggae, but I don't hate you, so you don't have to attack me for my opinion.

When I say this song is "Sucko-Barfo," I haven't insulted you (or you need some help). I haven't been insensitive to Marley's memory or the Carribean people.

It's not that I "don't get it." I simply don't enjoy it. In fact I loath it. I'm not saying I AM right, but that to dislike this IS my right.

Yo.

YOU'RE WRONG.

HA! I couldn't resist.
Miles Davis - It Ain't Necessarily So
(Jun 01, 2005 - 10:59)
I think godlike applies to very few induviduals in the entire history of the world but it is more than appropriate to describe Miles.

Great artist. One that bared his soul in everything he played.
Nickel Creek - House Of Tom Bombadil
(Jun 01, 2005 - 09:59)
Nice playing and anyone that writes a song about Tom Bombadil is aces in my book
Elvis Costello - Monkey To Man
(May 31, 2005 - 13:54)
Great performer
Great song

I've seen him several times in concert and Costello gives you lots of bang for your buck.
Ben Folds - Annie Waits
(May 31, 2005 - 13:08)
I saw Ben Folds at Ravinia last year. I hadn't really gotten into his music much, but I went to the concert to give it a go. I must say, I really couldn't understand what the fuss was about. Honestly I thought he was a sloppy musician bordering on a hack. He did a hell of a sales job but it didn't do anything for me.
