More lyrics

for those who think this is song is dated take off your rose colored glasses
and put your armor on and come down to the bad side of any major city

The Rat's own dream guns him down
As shots echo down them hallways in the night
No one watches when the ambulance pulls away
Or as the girl shuts out the bedroom light
Outside the street's on fire
In a real death waltz
Between what's flesh and what's fantasy
And the poets down here
Don't write nothing at all
They just stand back and let it all be
And in the quick of the night
They reach for their moment
And try to make an honest stand
But they wind up wounded
Not even dead
Tonight in Jungleland

The Clash - Straight To Hell
(Nov 01, 2009 - 07:08)

Like those of many songs by the Clash, the lyrics of "Straight to Hell" decry injustice. The first verse refers to the shutting down of steel mills in Northern England and the alienation and racism suffered by immigrants despite their attempts to integrate into British society. The second verse concerns the abandonment of children in Vietnam who were fathered by American soldiers during the Vietnam War. The third verse contrasts the American Dream as seen through the eyes of an Amerasian child with a dystopian vision of American reality. The final verse considers the plight of immigrants throughout the world. Due to this difficult subject material, as well as the slow, aching beat, the song is one of the most downbeat tracks in the Clash's history.

You're not alone.  Jazz puts me in a bad mood.

For those who preach the eclectic thing: I am all in favor of that, more than you'll ever know. It's a little rude to presume that just because someone doesn't like Jazz, then they are close-minded.  I have tried many times, but I have never connected to a Jazz piece.  Besides, this station is not all that eclectic.  There is no Rap, for instance. I don't buy, not in a million years, the notion that all rap is bad and does not deserve air time.  I just think the RP community (myself included) does not care much for rap. Maybe Jazz should be treated like Rap. (wishful thinking)

This is an insightful and itelligent way to explain why you don't like this song and Jazz in general and while i disagree with you ,  it also  makes your opinions more valuable to me.

This is not an insightful and itelligent way to explain why you don't like this song and Jazz in general and it makes your opinion less valuable. less less valuable in fact. Sigh. It's so hard to talk to people with no critical thinking skills.

So let's start today's lesson here: I have twice as many songs rated "8" as I do "1." I also have almost twice as many 7s as 1s, and almost twice as many 9s as 1s. Got that? Good. Sort of renders your point — well, pointless. Sort of like your existence, no doubt.

Now let's continue with Sturgeon's Law and the Radio Paradise Corollary: Anyone who has more 10s than 1s probably isn't thinking very hard. This is especially true, I'll venture, when that someone is 30 or so and his favorite music is apparently dinosaur acts like Pink Floyd and Simon and Garfunkel (Simon and Garfunkel!!). You're already such a bore that I almost hate to think what you're going to be at 40 — you'll undoubtedly already be waving the cane around telling the kids to turn down that damn noise.

holborne the self important troll finds it important to take a crap in every comments thread

Looking at the history of your comments makes one wonder why it is you leave a trail of crap wherever you go...  perhaps you should look into that.

Well, your dazzling rhetorical jabs, such as "such a load" and "his music was so underground" sure have me convinced!

And no, I'm not taking it personally at all, although it does irk me when people insist on worshipping a tin god like Zappa even though there are lots of decent musicians they could be paying attention to instead. Sorry, but since Zappa died, his stock has done nothing but fall, for good reason. It will continue to fall, and soon enough he'll be on the scrap heap with all the other overrated, self-proclaimed geniuses. Lucky for him he had a family who continue to pimp his reputation, because otherwise no one would remember him as anything other than the guy whose weirdly-named daughter sang the novelty song "Valley Girl."

Siberia is a 2005 studio album by Echo & the Bunnymen. The album garnered generally positive reviews, with some commentators calling it their best work since Ocean Rain, despite it being the first to not reach the UK Top 75.

The track "Of a Life" is noteworthy because the chorus has the line, "I want a song to learn and sing / of a life requited", which name-checks their 1985 compilation album Songs to Learn and Sing.

Led Zeppelin - What Is And What Should Never Be
(Jan 24, 2009 - 10:28)

Jimmy Page is of course known for being a guitar master

He is also one of the most overlooked underated Producers as well in my opinion. I know others have the same regard for him but i feel the need to point it out here after hearing this song again and reading the comments that relate to the production and arrangement. Jimmy knew what he wanted and he also knew very well how to achieve it.

 from Jimmy's wikipedia article ...

Page has explained that he had a very specific idea in mind as to what he wanted Led Zeppelin to be, from the very beginning:

"I had a lot of ideas from my days with The Yardbirds. The Yardbirds allowed me to improvise a lot in live performance and I started building a textbook of ideas that I eventually used in Zeppelin. In addition to those ideas, I wanted to add acoustic textures. Ultimately, I wanted Zeppelin to be a marriage of blues, hard rock and acoustic music topped with heavy choruses — a combination that had never been done before. Lots of light and shade in the music

Blue Man Group is most noted for wielding the trademark Sledge-O-Matic. they shower audiences with the pulverized remains of apples, orange, lettuce, cottage cheese, pound cakes, Big Macs and of course, terribly generic music. No show can end without the Watermelon Finale. Show-goers turn up already wearing plastic raincoats, goggles, sunglasses, umbrellas and windshield wipers and refer to the front of the theater as Death Row.

Uakti (WAHK-chee) is a Brazilian instrumental musical group, whose members are Marco Antônio Guimarães, Artur Andrés Ribeiro, Paulo Sérgio Santos, and Décio Ramos. Uakti is known for using original musical instruments, built by the group itself. In the period between 1981 and 1987 they established themselves in Brazil.

The group's leader, Marco Antônio Guimarães, studied music at the Universidade Federal da Bahia in Salvador. There he met and took classes with Walter Smetak, who passed on to him his passion for constructing musical instruments. In the years following his training, Marco Antônio played cello with the São Paulo and Minas Gerais symphony orchestras. During the same period he constructed, in the basement of his house, various instruments out of PVC, wood, and metal. In order to have musicians to play these instruments, in 1978 Guimarães had the idea of bringing together some of his colleagues from the Orquestra Sinfônica de Belo Horizonte, to meet at the Foundation for Artistic Education of Belo Horizonte. Various musicians took part; among them were the percussionists Paulo Sérgio Santos and Décio de Souza Ramos, the flutist Artur Andrés Ribeiro, and the cellist Cláudio Luz do Val. These musicians learned how to play the instruments, and the group Uakti was formed. Marco Antônio Guimarães became the principal composer and arranger, although all the participants frequently contributed their own compositions.

The group's first recording was of their participation in the soundtrack of the 1979 film Cabaré Minei

Yes - Close To The Edge
(Sep 14, 2006 - 13:04)
According to the band's official website, Yesworld, the song is inspired by Hermann Hesse's book Siddhartha, an explanation which can cast the cryptic and mysterious lyrics in a new light, tracking the awakening of Hesse's character "close to the edge" of a river (and, symbolically, of the serial lifetimes of his soul) where he experiences a spiritual awakening.

From the Lyrics -> He thought that some of these faces might be right for him....And
that through the years, by keeping an ideal facial structure fixed in his
mind....Or somewhere in the back of his mind....That he might, by
force of will, cause his face to approach those of his ideal....The
change would be very subtle....It might take ten years or so....
Gradually his face would change it's shape....A more hooked nose...
Wider, thinner lips....Beady eyes....A larger forehead.

Dunno if it's still common, but back in the days when this album was recorded, lots of recording studios used a variety of speaker configurations for mixdown, including mono and stereo car speakers. Sorta strange seeing a megabucks mixing console with a 6" x 9" oval car speaker in a cheap plywood box sitting on top of it.

thats correct- the massive speakers mounted in the wall at the front of the control room aren't used for critical listening so much. Most sessions will have 2 pairs of skrs on the console 1 of which will be the engineers prefered set - studios typicaly have many types or the engineer will bring their own high end studio monitors. And .. will also have 1 cheapo in the middle for listing in mono on small 4-6" speaker.

Seemed like it was impossibly hard -- tape hiss (noisefloor) just below his barely audible voice - we were banging our heads on the table. trying to be nice "stay close to the mic? ok? sounds great !"

David Bowie - Fame
(Oct 06, 2005 - 14:47)
Bowie and John Lennon with Carlos Alomar- "John was hanging out. It was one of those hanging-out sessions so much a part of the '70s," Bowie told the News. "He said 'Hey, why don't we do something?' I said 'OK, you're on.' Then I (thought) 'Oh (damn), what do we do? How do you write something with a Beatle?'"

Bowie guitarist Carlos Alomar had come up with a riff they'd been doing in a cover of the old '50s Flares tune, Foot Stomping.

"We immediately started doing that. John was just playing along with it, and every now and again he'd go 'AYYMM!!' And I said 'I got it, I got it!' And I just put an F in front of it Fame! We were off and running from there."

Lennon wrote the chords, Alomar the roaring guitar line and Bowie filled in the lyrics and the lower guitar parts.

"I really wish, obviously, in hindsight that we'd done more work together. It was such a joy being in the studio with him. I wonder what we would have done," he said. "But we were having too much of a laugh. Most of the time we spent together was pure stupidity. There wasn't much work going on at all, as you can imagine."

posted for your infotainment

DECLAN MCMANUS'S father was a jazz bandleader, and he was often given copies of the popular records of the day, which he passed on to his son. It was these recordings by the Beatles, the Kinks, the Who, and the stars of Motown that instilled in McManus a love of rock and roll and laid the foundation for his own musical style. When he graduated from high school in Liverpool, he found a day job as a computer operator (a profession that placed such a strain on his eyes that he began wearing his now signature glasses) and played clubs at night. In 1974, he moved to London and became front man for a country-rock group called Flip City. As the group's songwriter, he was soon recording demos, which he began sending to British record companies in hopes of landing a deal for himself. The only taker was Stiff Records, an emerging label in the punk and new wave scene. There he met Nick Lowe, who would become his longtime collaborator, and Jake Riviera, who would later become his manager. It was Riviera who gave McManus the idea to change his name: "Elvis" was chosen as a challenge to the rock establishment, and "Costello" was McManus's mother's maiden name.

Costello was given only twenty-four hours of studio time to record his first album, and was backed by an American country-western bar band named Clover (their lead singer at the time, who didn't participate in the sessions, was Huey Lewis). Two singles, "Less Than Zero" and "Alison," were released with little fanfare. In a desperate attempt to secure a distribution deal, Costello strapped a Pignose amplifier on his back and played in front of the Hilton in London, where a CBS Records international convention was taking place. He was soon arrested, but he signed with the label.

His first album, titled My Aim Is True, was released in 1977 on Columbia, and was immediately hailed as one of the finest debuts in rock history. It was embraced by the new wave and punk underground scene for its energy and scathing, cynical observations on relationships and sexual misadventures (Costello said at the time his motivation came from "revenge and guilt"); critics loved it for its literacy and eclectic musical ideas, and went so far as to vote it "Album of the Year" in Rolling Stone's annual poll. Costello assembled a backing band called the Attractions and began touring America, where he managed to anger the staff of Saturday Night Live by replacing "Less Than Zero" with "Radio, Radio" (the band played the opening strains of the former and without stopping, launched into the latter, a scathing indictment of radio, the music industry, and for that moment, U.S. network television).

The Beatles - Got To Get You Into My Life
(Sep 14, 2005 - 09:58)
JOHN 1980: "Paul. I think that was one of his best songs, too, because the lyrics are good and I didn't write them. You see? When I say that he could write lyrics if he took the effort-- here's an example."

PAUL circa-1994: "I'd been a rather straight working class lad, but when we started to get into pot it seemed to me to be quite uplifting. It didn't seem to have too many side effects like alcohol or some of the other stuff, like pills, which I pretty much kept off. I kind of liked marijuana and to me it seemed it was mind-expanding, literally mind-expanding. So 'Got To Get You Into My Life' is really a song about that. It's not to a person, it's actually about pot. It's saying, 'I'm going to do this. This is not a bad idea.' So it's actually an ode to pot, like someone else might write an ode to chocolate or a good claret. I haven't really changed my opinion too much, except if anyone asks me for real advice, it would be stay straight. That is actually the best way, but in a stressful world I still would say that pot was one of the best of the tranquilizing drugs. I have drunk and smoked pot and of the two I think pot is less harmful. People tend to fall asleep on it rather than go out and commit murder, so it's always seemed to me to be a rather benign one."
