Butthole Surfers - The Shame of Life
(Mar 07, 2009 - 10:22)
"This is the Central Scrrrrrrrrutinizer!!!"

Coldplay - Viva la Vida
(Jan 10, 2009 - 10:36)
Satriani's original rocks.

This sounds like a crappy Christmas single.  Why are we hearing it in January (or indeed at all?)

Portishead - Glory Box

Trouble is, Portishead's 'oeuvre' is pretty slim, up until this summer only 2 albums in the best part of a decade. There are few songs of theirs that don't get a lot of airtime, though it has to be said that songs from Dummy are more often heard than those from their eponymous first album (the 'Shirley Bassey' album, as I always think of it).

Actually, their eponymous album was their second (1997), Dummy was their first (1994).

You have to eat the meat (Roger's lyrics) before you can have the pudding (David's solo).

RIP Rick.

Why for why has this guy (and PT) never made it big in the UK - I hear they had a spot on BBC radio.

Really? I can't see them on Radio 1 now that John Peel's sadly passed on. PT are way, way too sophisto for the clanging dumbed-down McMusic that gets airtime on R1. I gave up listening to that channel ages ago once Peelie died.

PT were in session a couple of times on Mark & Lard's evening show back in the mid 90s, about the time they became a full band.

More recently, SW was interviewed and a couple of tracks played shortly after the release of Fear of a Blank Planet on Bruce Dickinson's Rock Show on BBC 6 Music.

Hey!  You cut of the "tiddley-POOM!" at the end!

The Dandy Warhols - Talk Radio
(Oct 08, 2008 - 09:36)
A touch of Type O Negative in there too...

Snow Patrol - Run
(Oct 05, 2008 - 10:38)
Not a bad song actually, but it has suffered from overplay on British radio.

And like too many cooks spoil the pot, so may too many ingredients.....

But like a good cook, SW knows that even though you have a large inventory of ingredients at hand, you don't use them all at the same time.

"Honestly disgusted"? Have you thought about writing to your local MP/congressman/relevant political representative in your part of the world to complain in the strongest possible terms?

Just the intro sounds like No Quarter. The rest of the song is different. Yet you rate 10 to Portishead's Glory Box which makes heavy use of Isaac Hayes' "Ike's Rap III" and 9 to Massive Attack's "Safe from Harm" which makes heavy use of Billy Cobham's "Stratus"?

"Mardy bum" is colloquial ( northern ) English slang and translates as an affectionate term for a close friend who is being short tempered or angry. The word 'mardy' means (sort of) angry, and the addition of the suffix 'bum' reduces the impact of the adjective and adds a degree of familiarity to the phrase.

The girl in the song is angry at the man for being late and his litany of excuses cut no ice with her. He is acknowledging her feelings and trying not to provoke her further.

In my experience, the phrase is mainly used in Yorkshire. I used to live in Sheffield and one of the joys of listening to this band is the unashamed use of local references which take me back to when I used to live there.

Isn't learning about another culture a journey of discovery?

Some people don't seem to understand... with reggae, it's all in the groove...

Coldplay - White Shadows

Even though it always bugs me that Porcupine Tree don't get the mainstream attention that Coldplay get despite being vastly superior, I still don't feel the need to go on a silly little tirade like some folks round here and automatically rate every track as sucko-barfo.

Edit: Actually, this is one of their better tracks. Bumped up to .

The Beatles - Within You Without You

Heh! after Bill mentioned "80s cheesy flashback" I recognised this by the second drum hit!
Bob Dylan - Subterranean Homesick Blues
(Oct 25, 2005 - 10:54)
Heh, there was a spoof news article on the UK TV show "The Day Today" in which some recently discovered footage (over-dubbed with a good impression!) "proved" that this was originally performed by George Formby in the 40s!

I'm warming to Dylan as I get older...
Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms
(Oct 24, 2005 - 10:52)
For a few seconds, before the guitar came in, I thought this was something from Bowie's "Low"

Last album I ever bought on vinyl... (Edit: Brothers in Arms, that is.)

David Bowie - Helden
(Oct 21, 2005 - 11:34)
Heroes im Deutsche? Kühl!

Porcupine Tree - Fadeaway
(Oct 01, 2005 - 17:28)
Hmmm... this the re-recorded version? I've got the original when PT was pretty much just Steve Wilson by himself, and used sequencers and drum machines. This sounds fuller, especially the drums.
The Stranglers - Always the Sun
(Sep 20, 2005 - 09:20)
Youcancramalotmorewordsintoeachlinethanisnormallyfeasibleinasong
- if you're mad enough!

Kathleen Edwards - In State
(Sep 17, 2005 - 12:02)
Something gives me the urge to start singing "If you're going to San Francisco"...
Chambers Brothers - Time Has Come Today
(Sep 16, 2005 - 12:09)
"The cowbell as a symbol of unbridled passion" - Frank Zappa

It's old, never heard it before in my life, but it kicks!
The Smiths - Stretch Out and Wait
(Sep 16, 2005 - 10:07)

Yep, THIS is why I've never cared for Morrissey and The Smiths. Could someone PLEASE tune that guitar? And stop that caterwauling. Sorry, just not any good in my opinion.

In some ways I can understand why people don't like The Smiths and Morrissey, as I felt like that until about a year and a half ago when something just clicked. I'm all too happy to hear them now!
AfroCelts - Ayub's Song - As You Were

"Flattley Michael, I don't Riverdance"
The Killers - All These Things That I've Done
(Sep 13, 2005 - 12:14)
The guitar reminds me of early 80s Scottish band Big Country. Not sure whether that's a good or bad thing.
Muse - Endlessly
(Sep 12, 2005 - 10:47)
(Checks out other Muse tracks...)

Hey! Why isn't "Butterflies and Hurricanes" on RP? :-k
Delays - Nearer Than Heaven
(Sep 03, 2005 - 16:57)
Nice... it's just the guitar part in the chorus keeps reminding me of something... but what??? :-k
Porcupine Tree - Mellotron Scratch

Quite simply, they're not called "Coldplay". :(

PT are just about my favourite band, good that they get played on on RP
Echo & The Bunnymen - The Killing Moon
(Aug 30, 2005 - 11:45)
E&tB's finest moment! Great!

Also dig their cover of "People are Strange", which actually out-Doors the Doors version with its extended instrumental break.
