Actually, their eponymous album was their second (1997), Dummy was their first (1994).

PT were in session a couple of times on Mark & Lard's evening show back in the mid 90s, about the time they became a full band.
More recently, SW was interviewed and a couple of tracks played shortly after the release of Fear of a Blank Planet on Bruce Dickinson's Rock Show on BBC 6 Music.

"You know, the Deer Hunter..."

It was innovative, moving, funny and, ultimately, quite philosphical. And the hero is well fit, as we say over here!!!

Still, I kind of prefer the more laidback and soulful grooves of the first two albums over the somewhat dreary darkness of Mezzanine.

Arctic Monkeys - Mardy Bum (Nov 06, 2006 - 18:37) | Paul_in_Australia wrote:
"Mardy bum" is colloquial ( northern ) English slang and translates as an affectionate term for a close friend who is being short tempered or angry. The word 'mardy' means (sort of) angry, and the addition of the suffix 'bum' reduces the impact of the adjective and adds a degree of familiarity to the phrase.
The girl in the song is angry at the man for being late and his litany of excuses cut no ice with her. He is acknowledging her feelings and trying not to provoke her further.
In my experience, the phrase is mainly used in Yorkshire. I used to live in Sheffield and one of the joys of listening to this band is the unashamed use of local references which take me back to when I used to live there.
Isn't learning about another culture a journey of discovery?
I wish Massive Attack would do the same thing and use expressions like "'ark at 'ee", "allrights me luvver" and "gurt lush".

It confounds me that someone can get bored with a band with such varied output as PT. Reminds me of this scene in the British "alternative" sitcom, The Young Ones:-
KING: You know, living in a world where nothing boring ever happens can be a real pisser.
MINION: Sire, the man in the time machine has just returned with the actual video of the birth of Christ. Would you care to-
KING: Not now, minion!
MINION: Also, next door, the Rolling Stones are making a new album, while two hippopotamus make love underneath the theatre.
QUEEN: The king is bored with interesting things, minion... and so am I.
KING: What I want is to meet someone who is totally and utterly mindnumbingly boring. But I suppose I never will.
--INT: KITCHEN
NEIL: I suppose it's because I'm so mind-numbingly boring that I never get to meet any interesting people.

Is it just me, or does anyone else here The Doors in there. ...must be the organ...
You should check out their version of People are Strange... it has an extended instrumental break which the original lacks, ironically making it more "Doorsy" than The Doors version.

I keep thinking "Synesthesia" by Porcupine Tree - it's that plinky synth riff. It's not on RP though.

Semisonic - Get A Grip (May 27, 2006 - 12:54) | So am I the only one who noticed the Hendrix lift there? Nice though.

Hooverphonic - You Love Me To Death (May 22, 2006 - 08:47) | Are other vacuum cleaner manufacturers catered for musically? Has anyone thought about calling their band "Dysonphonic"? They'd be better because they wouldn't lose suction.

I'm always rather amused when I see an advertisement on TV for someone's new album, and there is a quote from a review stating "a stunning return to form". Basically the polite way of saying that the previous album was crap.

Thirteen Senses - Do No Wrong (May 10, 2006 - 12:00) | Actually, I don't hate Coldplay. They're OK, just not brilliant. I'd rather hear them than a lot of stuff plugged by the popular media.
|
Zero 7 - Futures (May 10, 2006 - 10:24) | Interesting demo. All they really need to do is clean up those loops.
|
Matisyahu - Youth (Apr 29, 2006 - 09:26) | "Young man, control is in your hand, slam your fist on the table and make your demand."
Young man needs to learn some manners...
Was also going to put a silly comment "my name's Matt, but I'm no yahoo" but I found out that Matisyahu is in fact the original Hebrew version of Matthew...
Actually, I quite like the rock/reggae crossover feel of this. Gets a 7 from me.

The Prodigy - Skylined (Apr 27, 2006 - 09:47) | I'd like to hear "Voodoo People" but that would probably result in broken furniture, limbs etc.

Thank's to RP I thought it was about time to get Abbey Road...
I didn't realise how much synth there is on this track! I wonder if they'd stayed together a couple more years they might of experimented with some synth only tracks and catalysed that area of music a few years earlier.
Interesting how this contrasts to the proto-doom metal of "I Want You/She's So Heavy" before it on the album.
