Talking Heads - Paper (Mar 01, 2009 - 09:11) | Good analysis. How appropriate, then, that this album is titled Fear of Music, although it was published 3 decades ago!
|
Talking Heads - Paper (Feb 28, 2009 - 12:11) | Folks are completely crazy, rating this gem a 1 en masse.
The whole album is a masterpiece.

The Idan Raichel Project - She'eriot Shel Ha'Chaim (Scraps Of Life) (Feb 28, 2009 - 11:48) | Great... Please give us lots more songs in languages other than English! No objection to songs sung in English, of course, but the proportion of 99% to 1% gets tiresome sooner or later. A proportion of 50% to 50% would be much more preferable (even though it would still be very unfair towards languages other than English).
And don't tell me to "go listen to a World Music radio station instead". I'm not in the least interested in "World Music". I dislike radio stations that are sorts of ghettos, specializing in one kind of music only; this is why I believe Radio Paradise is the best radio station of all: because it's unabashedly eclectic. All I'm interested in is good music, and it's more than obvious that 99% of the world's good music is not sung exclusively in English.

Atomic Bomb was anything but boring, it was superb; each song carefully written and performed; and the best song of them all is still virtually unknown: Yahweh.

Talk Talk - The Rainbow (Feb 04, 2009 - 14:14) | Very nice... Now who dared to rate this a 1 as one of the first 3 people to rate the song? (The whole album is great, by the way.)

Jana Kirschner - Na Ciernom Koni (Jan 25, 2009 - 08:26) | lathyris wrote: Unless something has changed, I believe RP will accept as low as 192 kbps.
I mixed that up: 256 rather than 320 kbps are required, while 192 are exceptionally allowed. Well, I'll try to get hold of those songs at 256 or 192.
lathyris wrote:I'd definitely like to hear some more Czech/Slovak stuff, and I'm sure other would too, so please upload if you have a chance!
Most recently I've uploaded the classic (1982) pop ballad Čerešne by Hana Hegerová (written by Jaro Filip and Milan Lasica). Its current approval rating on RP's Listener Review Channel is 80% (4/1), so if you and others support it, maybe it will make it onto RP's main playlist one day.
coolpeople_rule wrote:She's not too hard on the eyes! A former Miss Slovakia contestant wouldn't be. Still only a 7 rating so far from me for this song, though; there are better Jana Kirschner tunes (from her breakthrough 1999 album).

Cardigans - Erase-Rewind (Jan 17, 2009 - 03:28) | Pyro wrote:I'm embarrassed to say, having never LOOKED at this page while this song was playing, I thought it was Madonna. What nonsense. There's no similarity whatsoever either in music or the singer's voice. Cardigans are a great rock band, not Madonna's pop soda, and this may well be their best song ever. A clear 10 if there ever was one.
|
Jana Kirschner - Na Ciernom Koni (Dec 29, 2008 - 07:48) | Great to hear music from one's own country played here, although I only give this one a 7 for now. This isn't a typical Slovak pop (or rock) song by any means, although perhaps that's the reason Bill agreed to include it in RP's playlist. For the best Jana Kirschner songs, I'd go to her earlier, 1990s tunes (huge hits back then!) such as Modrá or V cudzom meste, although those are traditional pop-rock songs and as such might perhaps not seem attractive enough to Bill and a "foreign" audience.
There's lots of great Slovak and Czech rock music from the 1980s (or even 70s) down to today, and I've been meaning to upload the choicest masterpieces to RP's Listeners Channel for a while, but... where to get them at the minimal required rate of 320 kbps? That's a problem for me, but as soon as I get hold of some of those classic Slovak & Czech rock CDs, I'll be uploading a few suggestions.
For example, I think the song Carmen by Stromboli (the Czech Pink Floyd of the 1980s) would fit perfectly into RP playlists, or a Dežo Ursiny or Bez ladu a skladu song from among Slovak artists! See my favourite songs list, continually expanded with lots of (not only) Slovak and Czech classic (or new) rock songs.
PS: This song's title should be Na ciernom koni (or Na čiernom koni if you're a perfectionist), not Na Ciernom Koni. It means On a Black Horse, but only the first letter of song titles is capitalized in the Slovak (or Czech) language.
Erm... sorry about the long post! It's been "bothering" me for a few years now that Radio Paradise is so predominantly English-speaking. If experienced listeners from every country of the world uploaded the best that their country's rock music has to offer, we might end up with something truly unique here on Radio Paradise. Of course RP is unique even now as it is, but it's predominantly focused on music from English-speaking countries. Yeah, the largest amount of the world's best rock music is probably produced in English-speaking countries, but not in this proportion (95 to 5 % or 99 to 1 %). On the other hand, all of us carry our own regional biases, so the Listeners Channel is a good way to sort out the good stuff from among "regional" suggestions submitted from various corners of the world.
End of article!

The Cure - This Twilight Garden (Nov 03, 2008 - 03:24) | Really great music from the time when The Cure were at their best. And the triple album (or is it quadruple?), Join the Dots, is exceptional even in the context of those normally useless box sets, as my predecessor has already noted.
|
Coldplay - Death and All His Friends (Nov 03, 2008 - 02:56) | ArbiterOfGoodTaste wrote: A pretty weak album compared with their last two.
You mean with their first two, those were phenomenal. The third album was a let-down, and the fourth album is not exactly a revelation either.

Death Cab For Cutie - Cath (Oct 31, 2008 - 12:33) | <<Wait, did you just quote yourself?>>
ROFL! I usually argue with myself, but it's nice to see some inner harmony around here. (On-topic: a good song, currently a 7 for me, with 8 not impossible at a later point in time.)
|
Coldplay - Shiver (Oct 31, 2008 - 01:38) | Possibly the best Coldplay song ever. It's so raw and authentic. Coldplay get progressively worse as the time goes by, but the entire album Parachutes is rock music at its finest.
|
The Cure - All Cats Are Grey (Oct 19, 2008 - 03:24) | I'm a fanatic The Cure fan, but most of their songs are 7 at best, just as with any other artist. Let's not get overly excited.

Oh, shut up with that senseless predictable rant. U2 "used to have some good tracks"? Well, Bad is from 1984/5, you can't delve a lot deeper into the band's past, can you?
PS: "Everyone I know likes U2". Are you happy with the powerful way I argue my point?

The Cure - A Forest (tree mix) (May 28, 2008 - 03:21) | Yey! Please play more songs from this great re-mix album by The Cure. I generally hate all remixed stuff, but this album is outstanding, despite all the bashing it receives, even from Cure fans. A particular highlight is the Close to Me remix, of course. Plus, Never Enough is among the all-time best Cure singles.

The Gary Jules version is very good, too, no doubt about it. It's rated 7 by me currently. But the original would be a 10!
|
Gary Jules - Mad World (Mar 31, 2008 - 17:14) | Haha, just as I posted this... Bill slammed the original version...
So, I guess we'll never hear the original here. :-(
Come to think of that, I've never heard any Tears for Fears on Radio Paradise. Why is that? They have a bunch of fantastic, classic songs. My top 2 favourites being Head Over Heels and Everybody Wants to Rule the World.
|
Gary Jules - Mad World (Mar 31, 2008 - 17:12) | Please also play the original Tears for Fears version every once in a while!
This is a good cover, but the original is even better, I believe.

The Cure - Harold and Joe (Dec 19, 2007 - 10:50) | mZk wrote: Faterson wrote:Horribly underplayed. Rating 10.
Are you serious ?
Deadly serious. This is one of the best The Cure songs ever, and I'm a true The Cure aficionado, appreciating their Three Imaginary Boys and Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me and Disintegration albums the most. This song, though, is right up there among their finest. I've felt this to be the case ever since it first surfaced, inconspicuously, over 15 years ago.
Equally misplaced is the bashing, by a preceding poster, of another late song by another great band, New Order. Waiting for the Sirens' Call is an amazing album, and so is the title song. (From the same album, I appreciate Who's Joe?, Krafty, and above all Jetstream even more.) Again, I'd rate these late New Order songs on a par with classics collected on their Substance album back in the 1980s.
Seen in this light, Bill's choice to play these 2 Cure & New Order tunes back-to-back makes perfect sense. Both are great late songs by bands one traditionally associates with the 1980s.
|
Oi Va Voi - Yuri (Nov 20, 2007 - 02:59) | Bill just said in his comments on the song that the song features the voice of the first man in space, Yuriy Gagarin.
I don't think that's true. I speak Russian and the voice at the beginning of the song merely says something like, "Hello, all radio stations in the Soviet Union are currently tuned in to our program."
So, this was no doubt the voice of the original radio announcer who reported on Gagarin's exploit in space. (If there's the actual voice of Gagarin hidden somewhere else inside the song, I apologize.)
Good song, BTW. (A 7 for me right now.)
|
U2 - Love And Peace Or Else (May 29, 2007 - 23:52) | I generally love this band's stuff and this song is great.

|
U2 - One Tree Hill (Dec 14, 2006 - 14:31) | The best song by U2. Enough said.
(There are about 40 other candidates in their discography for that accolade.)
|
The Cure - Close to Me (closer mix) (Dec 11, 2006 - 14:17) | Might well be the best The Cure song ever. Except that there are at least 20 other very good candidates for that distinction.
|
Arlo Guthrie - Alice's Restaurant (Nov 23, 2006 - 15:23) | The most annoying song on Radio Paradise, ever.
I need to switch off RP now.
This probably means something for listeners in the US and their Thanksgiving, but for us here in Europe it seems like a meaningless tune!
(Or I may be in a particularly bad mood right now.)

The Verve - Lucky Man (Nov 06, 2006 - 23:28) | Excellent, really outstanding and cranking up the volume all at the same time.

U2 - With or Without You (Sep 17, 2006 - 09:29) | Darkmatter wrote:The first three songs on the Joshua Tree is in my opinion one of the most breathtaking row of opening tracks on an album ever:
1. Where the streets have no name
2. I still haven't found what I am looking for
3. With or without you
Beat that!
Here's another sequence of opening 3 songs that is equal in quality, IMO. Radio Paradise regulars will hate me for this, but:
1. Control
2. Nasty
3. What Have You Done For Me Lately
from Janet Jackson's 1986 album Control. I passionately hate almost everything Janet Jackson has done since that album, but Control -- the whole album -- is astounding.
Beside the 3 above, there are at least 3 more A+ compositions on Control: The Pleasure Principle, Let's Wait Awhile, and (my personal favorite) When I Think Of You.

Talking Heads - Totally Nude (Sep 11, 2006 - 14:17) | The whole Naked album is absolutely fabulous. I don't think there's a better album by Talking Heads, only ones that are equally good.
Naked, being a late Talking Heads album, is often underestimated. It's great to see it receive the deserved airplay on RP.
If I could recommend other songs from Naked beside 'Totally Nude' and '(Nothing But) Flowers' to be played on RP, they would especially be 'Facts of Life', 'Cool Water' and, of course, 'Blind'.

Don Henley - The Boys of Summer (Sep 03, 2006 - 05:09) | Shesdifferent wrote:We can do without this...please make it stop

Sorry, my position is exactly opposite to yours. Give us more 80s, Bill. (And more 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 90s, and 00s. That's what eclectic radio is all about.)

Alpha Blondy - Cocody Rock (Aug 25, 2006 - 20:07) | Except that in Slovak language, a word very similar to "cocody" means "prick, penis". The song would be banned in this country.

Feist - Mushaboom (Aug 24, 2006 - 04:10) | That sparkling piano ending is feisty indeed!
|
The Pixies - I Can't Forget (Aug 24, 2006 - 03:03) | The lyrics to this Leonard Cohen song could be nominated for the best song lyrics ever.
I like the Pixies but I don't particularly like their rendition of I Can't Forget.

Of course, they're all great songs, but it's a rather untypical sequence of commercially successful superstars here on RP.

Sting - Love is the Seventh Wave (Feb 21, 2006 - 03:22) | In your database for this great album, The Dream Of The Blue Turtles, please correct the release date: it's not 1990 but 1985. After all, the album includes the quintessential Cold War hit, 'Russians'. (Recommended to be included in RP playlist!)
On that note, it has always bothered me that RP's playlists, whether full or mini, never show the song year next to the song title. You need to click on the song title, then on the album title, to learn the (approximate) release year. Would anyone else welcome if years were shown in brackets right there next to the song titles even on the mini-playlist?
I think this would be especially useful for an eclectic station like RP because seeing the years makes it so much easier to appreciate the amazing developments in music played here... Thanks!
