Loch Lomond - Wax & Wire
(Dec 03, 2011 - 19:23)
I love this song.  Both here and in one of the coolest bicycle videos I've ever seen.  If you've never heard of Danny MacAskill, check this out.

The Vaccines - All in White
(Sep 10, 2011 - 18:31)
My wife says it sounds like Mumford & Sons.  I kind of agree with the Interpol post.

The National - Ada
(Oct 11, 2010 - 16:49)
I saw them a week ago here in Indianapolis and I have to ask.....

Is this guy a complete train wreck?  He seemed barely able to stand for a lot of the show and was pretty much rambling between songs.
Or is it all an act?

Wow, 3.6?  Seriously?  This is good.  Evocative, emotional, heartfelt, and well rehearsed.  The composition is clever and satisfying, and the musicians know their work, clearly.

I don't get it.  What is there not to like here?

I'm with you on that.  The ratings surprised me a bunch.  I mean, it's not a 10 but it's a good solid 8.

Muse - Neutron Star Collision
(Jun 20, 2010 - 17:17)
Somebody is sure channeling Freddie Mercury.

Jason Lytle - Brand New Sun

Deep Forest - Sweet Lullaby
(Mar 28, 2010 - 16:22)
I'm what, about a minute and a half into this song?  What an utter load of dung.  Deep?  maybe in their own minds.  Forest?  Yeah, just about as impenetrable.

The Smiths - How Soon Is Now

Same thing with the commercial "new" music station in San Francisco.  "Live 105" or something to that effect.  Every year they would have a countdown like that and this was their #1 for at least a couple years.

It's a good song but in my opinion it sounds a bit dated now.

If it only sounds a "bit dated"after 26 years, that's a hell of a lot better than Kajagoogoo could accomplish.  I call that high praise.

Amanda Palmer - Astronaut (A Short History Of Nearly Nothing)
(Mar 26, 2010 - 19:12)
I was half listening and I  could have sworn I heard Robert Smith.  That's not a knock, I like this a lot.

It do go on a bit

The Cat Empire - Fishies
(Aug 14, 2009 - 15:53)
This is so fun!  It reminds of a mix of Arctic Monkeys and Squirrel Nut Zippers.

Michael Jackson - Thriller

Thank you Bill.

RIP Michael

Millenia Nova - Nothing Left to Fear

David Byrne - The Revolution

Well, that sure was Beatle-esque. I liked it though.
Waldeck - Memories

I got to see them in Cincinnati back in 1987, I think.
People were throwing coins at Lydon (which made him a bit snarky) and I got to shake his hand. All in all a great show.

Well, THAT was a rather surprising click to rate this song.
The Audreys - You & Steve McQueen

What would Steve McQueen do if he heard this song?
(a) Nod and say, "Not my style, man, but it's cool you're doing your own thing."

(b) Punch the musicians in the face

(c) Jump on his bobbed Triumph and cruise into Salinas looking for chicks.

Edit: After reading their Wiki, I was mistaken. They were a bit before The Blackeyed Susans.
Not Drowning, Waving - The Magician

I rated this as a 5 then I saw the release date in the comments and bumped it to an 8. Elvis Costello gets some serious props for keeping the feeling.
Rick James - Super Freak

The simple fact that I would NEVER dream of saying a single one of these things about any woman I've dated explains why he's freakin' Rick James and I'm not.
Tracy Chapman - Fast Car
(May 28, 2008 - 13:05)
Flashback 20 years ago. My ex and I were walking through town after playing chess and drinking coffee at a local cafe. I was pushing our 8 month old son in a stroller. This same weekend was a national Women's Music Festival. The Tracy Chapman concert had let out about 30 minutes ago and as we were walking I heard three concert-goers yelling "RAPIST!" at me from across the street. Tracy Chapman will forever be linked to hatred and intolerance in my eyes. It's a shame, because I might otherwise enjoy the music.

Now, this morning, Bill played it while I was writing a message in a card to pack in her luggage. We're three months into her four month re-assignment hundreds of miles away. Because one thing war is good for is profits. Well, that and re-election unless, of course, you lie about the reason you are there and are at your term limit anyway. In that case, war is a brilliant tool to dump on your successor. Sort of like having the baby fart on your lap and knowing the diaper is full then handing him to your spouse saying, "He wants fed."

Some things should stay on vinyl. I don't mean that as an insult to this...quite the opposite. The ritual of unsleeving an album, handling it oh so carefully, cleaning it, making sure the tone arm is balanced and finally you get to sit back with eyes closed and listen.
Concept or prog rock albums of the past lend themselves so well to this and just lose that bit of magic when all you have to do is push a button or two.

Historically, men have fought many wars and fought them. Alexander and Napoleon to name the two most glaring examples.

And for some, war is the most pleasurable activity imaginable. Some men revel in war, glory in it, bath in it, weep bitterly when it ends.

And I'm not saying that because I love war. War is horrible, and should be avoided at all costs. But the men who star wars often fight them, and the men who fight wars often love them. If we're going to protest war, lets at least be intellectually honest about the human condition.

Funny how wrong and ignorant you are. During the 90s it was radicals who were at the forefront of campaigns against dictatorships in Iraq (politically and financially supported by Western powers, natch), Zimbabwe (ditto), South Africa (ditto), and many, many others. It was the Pilgers and Chomskys and Thomases of this world who were constantly drawing attention to 'human rights abuses' in forgotten areas, and regimes both 'sympathetic' and 'unsympathetic' to the West . It was Left activists who were banging on about the Taliban and violence against women in Afghanistan long before Monkeyboy Bush turned his radar on that benighted hole, and whilst Afghanistan was still an 'ally' of the West with Bin Laden a 'freedom fighter'. I could give chapter and verse of many, many other instances, but I dare say it would go in one of your eyes and out the other without leaving any trace of its passing. This is an interested question and it has generated good feedback. Personally, I hated the 80s music scene. It was vapid, overly-simple, drum-machine, pseudo-disco crap (the past three songs are a great example...Prince, The Smiths, Fine Young Cannibals), IMHO. On the good side, it did drive me to the 60's and early 70's blues-rock. Thank goodness grunge killed the 80's style of music and hopefully it will never re-surface.
My two cents.

THIS song is overly simple, drum machine pseudo disco?

Fair enough. OK, I don't like this song because when it first started I thought, "Oh! It's (insert any of a half dozen prior artists that sound like this.)" Therefore, this style of vocal delivery has been done to death. If the artist's vision involves being baking soda in the fridge and smelling like last week's leftovers then he's a success.

(Jun 21, 2007 - 18:53)
I know they are the darlings of the avant-pop and NPR and all that but, for some reason, they just leave me cold. They're very talented to be sure and are quite good at story telling. I'll give them that. I just can't get behind them for the same intangible reasons I can't get behind so many bands that all instincts tell me I should like. I wish them much success, but sorry guys, they aren't going into my stack of cd's anytime soon.
Paul McCartney - Only Mama Knows
(Jun 20, 2007 - 13:10)
The older I get, the more Paul McCartney feels like he's about my age. It's the same kind of thing that always amazes me when I realize how close in age '80's punk rockers are to me. Paul has aged gracefully, though he surely has aged....7 for this.
Sixteen Horsepower - Coal Black Horses
(May 29, 2007 - 19:12)
I first heard them on All Things Considered many years ago. The album Sackcloth 'N Ashes had just come out. I rushed out and bought it and haven't looked back. They just blew me away with that album. Shame they've split up.
Apocalyptica - Ruska
(May 17, 2006 - 18:47)
Certainly more upbeat than Midnight Syndicate or Godspeed You! Black Emporer but in that same vein. Add this one to the list of things to bitch about the local record stores not carrying.
