Tom Waits - Heartattack And Vine (Jan 16, 2008 - 07:57) | Now we're talking...I don't dig those covers of Tom that were played just before this.....This is the real deal....ya just can't replace this with a sweet smooth voice, it just doesn't cut the mustard in my opinion.

Beck - Beautiful Way (Jun 13, 2007 - 14:05) | PopKombo wrote: Tell me more about Beck ... what is the best album for the uninitiated?

since the postal service did the original, that's how i heard it first and was turned off by the iron & wine version. i think the likability of the song all depends on which one you hear first, the original or the cover. however, in this instance, both can very well hold their own.
Actually it's the entire sound of this version that i don't dig, that whole digital feel just doesn't give the raw emotion that I&W has...it's just my opinion obviously, Sam Beam thought it was worth re-working.....
|
Tom Waits - Jockey Full of Bourbon (Mar 08, 2007 - 13:25) | We need a lot more Waits in the rotation! There's so many great ones I've never heard on here....but of course, any of his tunes are always welcomed...

|
Santana - Black Magic Woman-Gypsy Queen (Mar 06, 2007 - 07:00) | Anyone who says they don't like this because it's so commercially overplayed and that Carlos built a career off the same sound is overly concerned with musicians not making it big and thinks they should be starving artists....it's re-god-damn-diculous! This tune is amazing!!
|
The Postal Service - Such Great Heights (Mar 05, 2007 - 14:24) | I'd much rather hear Iron & Wine's version....just can't get into this elctronic dribble....Sam sings and plays it with so much passion, especially compared to this.

I can't wait till August, when I get to see them play at The Gathering of the Vibes Music Festival!!!!
|
Grateful Dead - Scarlet Begonias (Feb 28, 2007 - 07:46) | Well, I aint always right but Ive never been wrong.
Seldom turns out the way it does in a song.
Once in a while you get shown the light
In the strangest of places if you look at it right.
If that verse doesn't state what make The Grateful Dead so great to you, then, "May the four winds blow you safely home"
|
Pearl Jam - Indifference (Feb 28, 2007 - 07:19) | I usually don't like Pearl Jam (do they really jam things out live??? I mean, could they pull off a decent improv???) songs but this one has grown on me...The live version I've heard with Ben Harper singing is truely amazing. People who always say Ben is not a good singer should listen to that...he frickin wails on it!

Sometimes it's the space in between notes that really makes a song.....If you want to listen to people who clutter up every second of a song with notes just because they can maybe you should try some Slayer or something....I rather enjoyed this, especially right now at 9:30 AM, east coast time....

Their output remarkably, superficially, parallels the Floyd. With this, they left behind their Meddle/Atom Heart etc stuff to a bold different sound. It was followed by their Wish You Were (Kid A) and then their Animals (Amnesiac).
Interesting arc.
Are you nuts???? Radiohead's mediocrity doesn't compare to the genius of Pink Floyd....

I guarantee you, 99.99% of the people here (myself included) can't tell and don't give a damn if you somehow consider it "poorly conducted." I'm just happy that a little Beethoven snuck into my day.

I DON'T LIKE SUFJAN STEVENS! Not this song, and not any of his songs that I've heard.
I don't understand why he's the critics' darling, or why they awarded him "Best Indie Album" last year. I've given him several chances, thinking maybe I just wasn't in the right mood or it wasn't the right song. But I've come to the irrefutable conclusion: YUCK. He reminds me of so many treacly 70s male singer-songwriters with wispy voice and ethereal sound, and it just does NOT work for me.
End of rant.
P.S. I wrote this before reading anyone else's comments. After reading a few, I see I'm not alone.
