since the postal service did the original, that's how i heard it first and was turned off by the iron & wine version. i think the likability of the song all depends on which one you hear first, the original or the cover. however, in this instance, both can very well hold their own.

Actually it's the entire sound of this version that i don't dig, that whole digital feel just doesn't give the raw emotion that I&W has...it's just my opinion obviously, Sam Beam thought it was worth re-working.....
Tom Waits - Jockey Full of Bourbon

Santana - Black Magic Woman-Gypsy Queen
(Mar 06, 2007 - 07:00)
Anyone who says they don't like this because it's so commercially overplayed and that Carlos built a career off the same sound is overly concerned with musicians not making it big and thinks they should be starving artists....it's re-god-damn-diculous! This tune is amazing!!
The Postal Service - Such Great Heights
(Mar 05, 2007 - 14:24)
I'd much rather hear Iron & Wine's version....just can't get into this elctronic dribble....Sam sings and plays it with so much passion, especially compared to this.

I usually don't like Pearl Jam (do they really jam things out live??? I mean, could they pull off a decent improv???) songs but this one has grown on me...The live version I've heard with Ben Harper singing is truely amazing. People who always say Ben is not a good singer should listen to that...he frickin wails on it!

Good lord, some of the snobbery around this place never fails to astound me! But no, one of the "Joe Pro" snobs has to chime in even for this. I guarantee you, 99.99% of the people here (myself included) can't tell and don't give a damn if you somehow consider it "poorly conducted." I'm just happy that a little Beethoven snuck into my day.

OK, I've held it in too long and I'm gonna say it:

I DON'T LIKE SUFJAN STEVENS! Not this song, and not any of his songs that I've heard.

I don't understand why he's the critics' darling, or why they awarded him "Best Indie Album" last year. I've given him several chances, thinking maybe I just wasn't in the right mood or it wasn't the right song. But I've come to the irrefutable conclusion: YUCK. He reminds me of so many treacly 70s male singer-songwriters with wispy voice and ethereal sound, and it just does NOT work for me.

End of rant.

P.S. I wrote this before reading anyone else's comments. After reading a few, I see I'm not alone.
