I was taking issue with the fact that here it is used as a measurement of time rather than the distance it actually represents. As far as a measurement of time, a light year is still just a year. Just wanted to clarify. :)

I think birdland is referring to the idea that people who suffer from depression may well be able to understand joy on an intellectual level, but they are not able to feel it emotionally; they are not really able to infuse it into their being. The certainty that the joy exists makes the inability to feel it all the more unbearable.
Nicely recovered depressive here...maybe I've simply projected my idea onto this comment. Either way, I hope it has at least some small degree of relevance.

This whole rating system somehow works, I guess.  Here's a listener who praises the song and says, "pretty good song..." but rates it as a 5.  Others won't give anything less than a 10, unless it's something they despise and then they slap it with an 8.  But overall the average rating seems to arrive where it ought to be. Personally I tend to ignore the suggestions of Bill and I go back to my school days.  If it's a 6, it fails.  If it's a 7 it's OK, it passes.  *8 is good, 9 is excellent, 10 is outta this world perfection.  That's what make the 1 a great designation.  You send it to the trash heap.

Not much pre-Bob reggae out there unless it is Ska: and Ska is not really reggae.  Bob Marley is the representative because he invented it...  An no, he did not invent it like Al Gore invented the internet: many contemporaries were dabbling but there is not doubt it was Bob Marley who made Reggae what it is and others followed...

You will not get much of an argument on this from any of Bob's peers or those who thrive performing their own reggae today.

I saw Bob live in Philadelphia in 1978: he is and will always be the man when it comes to Reggae.

Cheers.

One day someone will explain to me why this guy gets to be the cream of reggae.

Okay, he has written a couple of decent tunes.

Nobody in their right mind could call him a great singer.

I rather suspect it’s an “okay for white consumption” thing; the dumbing down of protest reggae for popular consumption.

Music doesn’t get much more middle of road than this but I suppose middle of the road is where the money is.

What a shame that Bob Marley has become the representative of a great music genre.

Truth is - it is without melody-harmony (the real thing),
no rythm, rather stupid lyrics and this femalish voice.

Believe it - I have been a "fan", when I was below 20,

From yahoo answers...

The expression "Massi téladi" is definitely not French; it is Bamanankan, one of the national languages of Mali; a land-locked sub-Saharan country in West Africa, once a French colony. It would appear looking at the lyrics of the song, by Amadou Bagayoko & Mariam Doumbia, most of which I have been able to translate into English. The phrase ("Massi téladi") in relation to the lyrics, seems to point to the possibility that it could, and this is a stab in the dark because it makes sense because of the relationship, mean "unlucky" - it seems to fit. Unless we have somebody in this community who reads, writes and speaks Bamanankan then we will not get a definitive answer.

Note: The original lyrics were written bi-lingual, part French, part Bamanankan

Well, they're not American or European; they're African. African music is primarily percussive, which includes even stringed instuments being played with a percussive technique. This has been happening for years - when the Who came out with "Who Are You?" most radio stations weren't required to censor it.  Gradually, though, the FCC started becoming (or catching flack from) the moral majority and implemented strict rules on what could and could not be allowed on the air.

Los Lobos - Angel Dance
(Aug 13, 2010 - 07:35)

Love this song!
I do like Robert Plant's new cover with his Band of Joy which I had the pleasue of seeing live in Mobile recently. Robert's covers are always such a homage to the artists. He has such a good time presenting the music from which his original inspirations were drawn many years ago with Zepp (yes, I know this song had not been recorded at that time). His version is a little bouncier.
That being said, I think this Los Lobos original is superior, but not by much. {#Sunny}

Plant says the same thing. {#Shhh}

Edit: Plant was still in a wheelchair, the result of a car accident in Greece, when this was recorded.

I happen to disagree. Personally, I would rate your contribution to the planet - by that comment, specifically, but apparently others you make given the snarky attitude you display here - as a '0'. I strongly suggest you find some way to contribute something positive - or keep your mouth shut and hands off the keyboard. In return, I promise not to trash something you like as though I've just uttered something that ought to have been obvious to you without my help.

For me, the creative energy on display - how many bands create multiple arrangements of a hit song - to play live and keep things interesting for both themselves and their audience? Not many. This is the only I know of. Besides, Jack Cassidy's bass playing on this song runs rings around the melody without ever failing to define the rhythmic punch the song needs - my OPINION, of course, with which many will quite reasonably and freely disagree.

PS: to Zep - I bet you have no musical talent, either. Might explain your cavalier attitude to criticism.

Ok, I'll bite... While Prince himself is not to my personal tastes, physically speaking, there is something enormously attractive about a man who is supremely confident in his own sexuality and wears it on his sleeve; he knows he knows how to please a woman and we know it, too. We can hear it in his voice, see it in his eyes, in the way he walks even. Women want to tame something like that. We want to be the one that satisfies him. Same for Brand... who is actually also a very classically handsome man, by the way.

I used some of the words of this song as part of my blessing on the marriage of my daughter and her husband.  They are making their home with one another.  I cannot hear this version without wistful tears of joy welling up, missing my daughter, but rejoicing in her adventure.

Home is where I want to be
Pick me up and turn me round
I feel numb - born with a weak heart
I guess I must be having fun
The less we say about it the better
Make it up as we go along
Feet on the ground
Head in the sky
It's ok I know nothing's wrong . . nothing

Hi yo I got plenty of time
Hi yo you got light in your eyes
And you're standing here beside me
I love the passing of time
Never for money
Always for love
Cover up and say goodnight . . . say goodnight

Home - is where I want to be
But I guess I'm already there
I come home - she lifted up her wings
Guess that this must be the place
I can't tell one from another
Did I find you, or you find me?
There was a time Before we were born
If someone asks, this is where I'll be . . . where I'll be

But I'm sure Michigan's Canadian Governess would be able to match Texas' unemployment and billions in surplus budget with her socialist policies. . . . someday. . . maybe if the Feds give her more money. Same goes for California, New York, Illinois. . . Why, if the "Evil Republicans" are so bad, are the only states not running broke those run by Republicans?

Obama: Bringing you the failed policies that extended the Great Depression!(Oh, wait. . . he is backing off all those promises already, and he hasn't even gotten the Electoral college confirmation yet)

I think I got a little spit on me there.

Saw them in Asheville, NC a couple of weeks ago. It was a terrific show! Amazing energy. Plant is a master showman who knows just when to pull back. Alisson is ethereal. From Wiki...

"God's Gonna Cut You Down", also known as "Run On", is a traditional folk song which has been recorded by numerous artists representing a variety of genres…

… The song has, in the past, been modified to fit the boundaries of genres like country, folk, gospel and techno. As "God's Gonna Cut You Down", it was performed by Odetta on Odetta Sings Ballads and Blues (1956) and Johnny Cash on the posthumously released American V: A Hundred Highways (2006). As "Run On", it was recorded, among others, by Elvis Presley. A version featuring vocals by Bill Landford & The Landfordaires was remixed by Moby and features on his album Play."

This song is so amazing!!!

John Lennon said the melody line in the beginning of "I Am The Walrus" came from the horn siren of a passing British police car... Just goes to show that imagination and inspiration is all around if you keep your senses tuned!...

(Feb 27, 2007 - 07:45)

My son is grown now and plays sax in a jazz band. So much for early infuences, eh?
Robert Plant - Big Log
(Jan 26, 2007 - 10:56)
The popular explanation for the title of this song is completely innocuous. It's been said that when this song was being written, the flames in the fireplace were dying. Someone suggested they get it going again and this time "Use the 'big log'". Seriously.

Tons of little goodies, some previously unreleased stuff, and a nice DVD documentary with interviews with Robert and some friends.
