Yep, same here... I'd be happy if LZ went way completely. I'm just glad that AC/DC isn't in rotation!

Black Sabbath - Planet Caravan (Sep 13, 2009 - 13:29) | dawndays wrote: Pantera does a good job with this too :) Again, not what you'd expect.
Agreed.
I like the Pantera cover better, although the rest of the album ("Far Beyond Driven") on which said song appears is pretty much junk. Having said that, |Sabbath| >> |Pantera|.
|
Frou Frou - Flicks (Jun 28, 2009 - 20:04) | A bit too much fluxing around with the vocals... but still fun.
|
Silversun Pickups - Rusted Wheel (Jun 28, 2009 - 19:47) | I'm always surprised at how much I like these guys. Solid 8, likely to move up.
Although, at first, I thought this was going to be a Kate Bush song....

Led Zeppelin - Thank You (Apr 30, 2009 - 07:03) | I could happily go the rest of my life without hearing another Led Zeppelin "song".
|
Madrugada - Majesty (Live) (Apr 13, 2009 - 17:42) | This live version is, IMHO, the best song of all time.
Self-indulgent? Absolutely — that's what makes it so important, because it's an accurate reflection of real life and real feelings.
|
Madrugada - Hands Up - I Love You (Apr 13, 2009 - 09:56) | I had been playing an Madrugada Majesty MP3, over and over so I thought "I'm tired of this, let's see what's on RP..." I find this the song currently playing... Funny how some bands set the theme to your life at certain points.

"In Rainbows" is certainly mood music.
Imagine you're a struggling graduate student, trying desperately to finish your dissertation, juggling girlfriends, watching the snow slide down the windows of your broken down car... it's absofuckinglutely perfect.

This is one of those songs that really sticks.
How's the rest of the album??

Third World - Jah Glory (Oct 11, 2007 - 12:26) | bluedot wrote: geez.
why do reggae songs get such low ratings on rp?
For the same reason other music gets low ratings. People don't like it and/or feel like they're hearing too much of it.
Not everyone has the same musical tastes. For me, occasional reggae is okay, but I feel that it's generally overplayed on RP compared to other "world music" (aka non-American) genres. I don't hear much Samba, Beijing Opera, monks chanting, etc. So why the heavy reggae rotation?

Air - Talisman (Oct 09, 2007 - 20:31) |
The entire album is really quite good. There's only one song that I could care less for, but even that is not bad.

Iron & Wine - Jezebel (Jul 29, 2007 - 13:03) | moonbat wrote:
Sigh. Smooth out your panties, folks. Let's recap, shall we? My original comment: "History depends on which side wins and who lives to tell the tale" was pointing out the fact that in any conflict, especially one that happened long ago, history is written by the winners. Since the Hebrews' version of history has survived for millennia, while the Phoenician culture is long gone, the Hebrews won that particular propaganda battle (not unlike the Tudor historian Holinshed, who depicted Richard III as an evil crookback and usurper. The good people of York would have strongly disagreed, but hey, the losers were out of power or long dead or both and nobody cared what they thought). My comment raised the ire of Ploafmonster (sorry, can't buy that he's a master of anything, not even ploaf), who snarked: "Yes, I'm sure we'd all agree that the Jews were the winners of history."
That was his comment, not mine. My answer: "The Jews' version of history spawned three important religions. I guess they won after all" was in response to his snarkasm. Perhaps if I had said "The Hebrews' version of history..." it would have been taken as a clearly historical reference and not as an anti-Semitic comment. I do think, however, that both you and Ploafie are looking at a glass half empty. Sure, the Jews have been persecuted throughout history, but still they've been able to have an enormous influence on our world. The Old Testament and the Ten Commandments are accepted as the Word of God by millions of people. Many of the greatest minds in the history of the world have been Jewish. Their contributions to medicine, science, arts and entertainment, literature, philanthropy and civil rights, not to mention religion, have been incalculable. Contrast this with another long persecuted group, the Romany, who have given us Django Reinhardt and fortune telling and not much else. Their standing in the world is on the sidelines, at best. They got bupkis. That the Jewish people are still able to serve humanity despite being hounded and persecuted for centuries is amazing and inspirational. BTW, have you heard about that new Phoenician deli on 5th Avenue? Me neither. Now luze mer up.
Hi, how are you?

Pearl Jam - Black (Jul 28, 2007 - 18:12) | The best PJ song of all time.
Edit: I just read the lyrics, and realized that my own lyrics are *completely off* haha... well, it's still a great song.
What I heard:
"She's an empty canvas, under sheets of glass, her legs spread out before me, as her body once did." (awkward, I know)

Silversun Pickups - Lazy Eye (Jul 28, 2007 - 18:07) | 7->8 ... It's one of those songs that really makes you *feel it* --- reminds me of Smashing Pumpkins, only slightly more smooth.

Led Zeppelin - Bron-y-aur Stomp (Jul 28, 2007 - 13:06) | Just stopped by to make sure I still had this as a 1... Yep.

Peter Gabriel - A Different Drum (Jul 28, 2007 - 11:27) | flyboy wrote: Usually I seem to agree pretty much with the consensus rating for songs on RP, with a few exceptions. The one guy that I just totally can't understand why everyone likes him is Peter Gabriel. I see his name and it's almost a guarenteed 1. The thing is is that I don't think I know anyone who does enjoy his music, let alone would give it a 10. I just don't know what kind of person does give Gabriel a 10. Apparently there were 75 people who did for this song. I just would like to know who this appeals to.
Clearly you don't appreciate music from the "vocalist" perspective. Peter Gabriel's feature is his voice and how he uses it as an instrument, rather than a weapon or noise device. His music is typically very well produced and a hallmark of quality amongst audiophiles.
Despite my deep appreciation of PG, I wouldn't simply rate all of his songs a 10 in some sort of "sheeplike" worship of his music.

On Acclaimed Music.net which compiles many music reviews from many different rock critics from decades,Queen is # 113 but The Beatles are rightfully at # 1!
I don't think anyone is claiming that Queen is better than the Beatles -- they're a lightweight/fun rock band. If you take Queen "seriously" you're completely missing the point.
Queen also happens to typify the sound of ROCK in the 70s, distinct from disco. I was born in the 70s, and I'm not an expert, but I like Queen. Some of their songs are fun, some are cheesy, some are stupid, some have meaning. I also like the Beatles: some of their songs are fun, some are cheesy, some are stupid, some have meaning. In terms of raw musical talent, Beatles win, no contest.
But enjoyable/pop music and talent aren't always connected, are they?

Metallica should cover this song. Speaking of which, I never hear Metallica on RP... what's up with that?
If Bill can play Reggae, he can certainly play Metallica. Their "Astronomy" cover is good, as is "Turn the Page".

I second that. LZ is probably the most overrated, overhyped, overplayed "band" in the history of rock.
Add another 1 to the stack.

Soft Hearted Scientists - Diving Bell (Jul 25, 2007 - 16:34) | I enjoy a good conversation in the middle of a song.

OK, now I don't hear it so much, oh wait, now I do...
Were some instruments recorded through a Leslie speaker?
What the hell is going on???
Yeah, put my headphones on after my last comment and noticed what you did, the rapid L-R shifting. Peter Gabriel does that on Solsbury Hill -- it's okay on speakers, but it's really annoying with headphones (unless you like that sort of thing).

Janis Joplin - Summertime (Jun 22, 2007 - 13:53) | I once heard Janice Joplin's singing compared to "dragging a thousand cats across a chalkboard".
I disagree completely. It is, at the very least, ten thousand cats.
Why the hype?

Arcade Fire - Keep The Car Running (May 11, 2007 - 20:34) | This song is in the rotation a little too much (or I'm listening to RP too much).
It's a decent song, I agree with the "darkside" comment below. It certainly has that feeling to it. Evokes a Bruce Springsteen feeling too.
Favorite Line: "The same place animals go when they die..."
reminds me of when my childhood kittycat ran away to die in a field... almost like she was trying to spare us the pain.
|
Richard Buckner - On Traveling (May 11, 2007 - 20:30) | Not sure how to feel about this... his singing has a certain weakness to it, and the vocals are too much in the foreground. The slight warble he puts into it sounds forced and a little fake. Sometimes he's just whispering.
I like it better when he just sings. Guitar sounds good, clean, crisp.

Led Zeppelin - In The Light (Mar 07, 2007 - 11:43) | Quite possibly the worst Led Zeppelin song, ever. Boring, rambling, stupid, and typical.

This song is a 7, but I always give an extra point for the dead.
|
Led Zeppelin - Rock And Roll (Feb 05, 2007 - 16:38) | Led Zeppelin deserves less than a 3.
Overplayed, overhyped, overrated, no depth, no meaning, no emotion. Just raw "stupidity and noise", such as is favored by meatheads.

Aaron Copland - Fanfare for the Common Man (Feb 05, 2007 - 16:31) | Is it just me or is Cincinnatti missing an ending "i" on the album cover picture that's shown here? When I click on it, it's okay... maybe just a funny way my browser displays the picture.
Anyway, a powerfully moving song... has lots of "images" embedded in it from various popular associations, still, a 10 in my mind.

The Who - Love, Reign O'er Me (Feb 04, 2007 - 11:55) | My first 10 rated song. An absolute classic in every sense of the word.
This song is about real love. Not the BS Celine Dion love.

The Cardigans - Live and Learn (Feb 04, 2007 - 11:52) | A mixture of Sheryl Crow & Johnny Cash & Neko Case & ... anyway, great voice, decent emotion, awesome lyrics, a strong 8.

The Weepies - Painting by Chagall (Feb 02, 2007 - 11:31) | Yeah... I fell asleep listening to this one. It's a little tiny bit interesting. There's a notable lack of "passion", which should be present in this type of song IMHO. Imagine the same song with Natalie Merchant singing it... that would be interesting!

For once, and probably only once, I agree with Physics Genius.
I hate Led Zeppelin, with a slight amount of passion. I really don't know why though. They rub me the wrong way, much the same wrong way that AC/DC does (the only band who I absolutely detest). I guess it's the specific culture that I associate with them, rather than the music itself.
If i'm being completely objective, some LZ songs aren't too bad. This song is not so good, even approached somewhat objectively.
|
The Coral - Dreaming of You (Jan 16, 2007 - 08:22) | This song only makes sense if you're going through what he's describing. I am. I love it.
|
Caravan - Golf Girl (Jan 15, 2007 - 11:21) | This song is half weird and half boring. It's Beatlesesque in the playful lyrical styling and melody + Jethro Tull-ish with the excessive fluting and long interludes but not edgy enough to really win me over or make me feel something.
|
Big Head Todd & The Monsters - Please Don't Tell Her (Aug 31, 2006 - 09:42) | aron wrote: I will donate $50 to never again heard Big Head Todd on RP.
Hahaha... Big Head Todd reminds me of my ex-girlfriend. She loved them and Toad the Wet Sprocket. So I kinda detest them already! I'm not sure i'd waste $50 on the memory. ;-)
Also my 2 cents on the lyrics: I will swear up and down that he's saying "please don't SELL her" I have a very nice pair of headphones and I cranked up the volume... no matter how closely I listen, each time he is definitely saying SELL, despite the title and the not-making-sense part. :) If he is indeed singing 'sell', that definitely pops the song back into the eclectic category, rather than the pop category where it belongs!
