Van Morrison - Baby Please Don't Go (Mar 22, 2013 - 07:34) | This number surely must go down as one of the most outstanding tracks of pop ever made if I can call it pop, more like 'The Blues' and I fully agree with joelbb's comment as Vans musical ability has never stood still embracing Jazz to Blues to Rock.n Roll .. And it still sounds in vogue and as fresh as the day it was cut. When 'George Melley' died he left a gaping hole in the music entertainment world that I believe VM is filling.

Time and the river... In the early 1980s this band seemed quite unique, hardly derivative of anything. Nothing, if "predictable". Their own promoters didn't know what to do with them! (You could often catch Oingo Boingo as an opening act for Reggae bands like Steel Pulse, Killer Bees, or the Twinkle Bros.) Not exactly "new wave", not at all "reggae", not prog rock. They were strange and you had to be a little beyond the norm yourself to ever be in a space where you'd discover them. I don't think they were trying to be "quirky" or "edgy", that part came naturally. I think they tried hard to be *big*. There were 9 or 10 performers credited on the '80 EP. I knew about this band because a friend of mine pointed out the Strawberry Alarm Clock connection, and insisted that I go see them in concert (which was quite amazing — they are as much *performers* as they are *musicians*.)

Your original comment was: It is 'Bolero'' and a very good rendition of it as well I doubt very much if Ravel would dislike it. Perhaps I misunderstood your meaning. You capitalized "Bolero" and attributed "it" to Ravel in the same sentence, implying that Zumurud is something like a cover version of Ravel's Bolero, which it is not. I agree with you that it's a bolero (lower-case "b"), but it's not Ravel's... different melody, lacks the key change near the end, etc.
What I am trying to get accross is like a conductor of an orchestra he will interpret the peice which may be entirely different to another conductor who has interpreted the piece tottaly different, and yet both are reading from the same score sheet.

Miles Davis - It Ain't Necessarily So (Oct 10, 2012 - 04:29) | Sasha2001 wrote:
It's hard to argue with a statement like this because it's your opinion and because Miles was so HUGE. However, for all of music, much less jazz in particular, this view is problematic. Miles was never the guy who invented new styles or genres, he really was a genius at observing what was going on around him musically and than trying to bring that to a more main stream audience - as was the case with "Kind of Blue" which didn't invent modal jazz, but it brought it into the living rooms of the Frank Sinatra set. Also remember, without Bill Evans on Piano, there is no KOB.
As far as musicians go, I think even Miles would admit that he stood on the shoulders of giants like Armstrong, Parker, and Gillespie.
But perhaps your central point has more to do with Miles' vast and unique career as a one-of-a-kind collaborator. To that point he arguably stands alone among 20th century musicians - but than all music has an element of collaboration. Can you see why your statements are problematic?
Appreciate your comment and taking the time to reply...but... you have totally missed what i was saying .. he Delved into all genre's of music I did not say he created them He did not stay in the one genre but experimented with all kinds with Jazz being the main theme. this he continued all his life never standing still stuck in one form of music. And as for saying the Bill Evans made the Album 'Kind Of Blue' that is not an appropriate statement Bill played piano, Miles played trumpet and together they created the Album so to take either away there of course would be no Album, and I dont agree that they created the Album to target the Frank Sinatra etc. market now that statement to me is 'Problomatic' But you are entitled to your opinions ...and thanks to Bill (RP Bill) I have now dug out the 'Porgy & Bess' Album and am taking it with me on a road trip today. Good listening to all. °º©©º° KJ

I'm accustomed to hearing the new music that Bill and Rebecca find from new bands that we've never heard of, and we appreciate the old treasures that have passed us by over the years, which RP dusts off and plays.
We enjoy most everything, and the occasional song that doesn't do anything for us, or grates on our nerves, doesn't deter us from listening. It's still better than any FM or XM station that I know of.
That said, I think that RP could use the occasional Enrico Caruso masterpiece now and then. ;-)
Very well said sici my sentiments indeed,,, and like you an occasional nerve grater but I just hit the mute button for that artist and track until its over.. no good running around with musical Blinkers on and complaining. Correct me if I am wrong here but I am led to believe it is not yodelling but a Native call that is used in the Cameroons, and a comment I read said that this is Hypnotic which is not far from the truth as these Natives use this call/sound when having taking some magical mystic drug that is required to enable them to enter the spirit world and contact their ancestors. I am amazed at the negative comments which is beyond me as this sound/track in fact the whole album couples the Gallic rythmns with the drum beats of Africa intertwining as if they were one, or perhaps they are. But - I just don't like them much - not a lot of range, in almost every sense, melodically, rythmically, vocally, instrumentation. In fact the very chameleon like aspects of Bowie's career that I love so much seem to be absent in these guys.
If you disagree, set me straight.
Thats why DB chose them as they are as repetetive non inspiring, playing/reciting continuous monotonal drivel as he does... sorry friend but DB is not one of my favourites.

Ummmm such negative comments I'm reading here... Can I just draw your attention to a significant observation and I'm sure I will be backed up on this and that is that 99% of Classical musicians worldwide choose Modern Jazz as their second Genre of music and to take a break from playing classical they play jazz for fun as its so interlocked with the great composers.. But that could well be a highbrow statement.

Aided by nearly two dozen guest musicians, this effort from the Afrocelts (aka the Afro-Celt Sound System) veers off in a slightly different direction from previous releases. Still present are the multi-culti layers of sound, the club-friendly beats, and the ethereal vocalists. What's missing is some of the hyper-kinetic energy and heavy drum presence that helped the first few Afro-Celt releases grab their audiences; in their place is a gentler, more soothing feel. Fiddler Eileen Ivers and flamenco guitarist Jesse Cook both make major contributions to the colorations of this new sound, while never quite upstaging the core bandmembers. http://www.allmusic.com/album/seed-r632581

Some older folk here may recognize it from the early 1970's when FM harbored progressive radio and the DJ actually picked what was played. The sets are then mixed together into what you hear on Radio Paradise and you'll see them repeated intact because of that.
Bill programs his automation computers to play what he wants when he wants. Inserting live programming into a streaming setup is not as easy as doing it with conventional radio automation so you'll rarely hear anything done in real-time.
I full agree with that RadioDoc ... not an easy task, I love the way he folds one Genre into another gradually sliding into another similar mood. He gets my full admiration, and I am always passing this station on to all my friends here in the UK not just for the ad free but the way Bill constructs his Programme.

Cantat admitted to hitting her 4 times, however prosecutors argued that it was in fact 19 times in all.<14> He later alleged she had fallen and hit her head on a radiator,<15> becoming unconscious from this impact, not his blows directly. Mavis Staples - You Are Not Alone (Mar 25, 2011 - 06:25) | calypsus_1 wrote:The fact that we all really like the RP, does not mean having ceased to be critical sense. I refer to some of the extracts of music and musical styles, which are not properly appreciated and valued by the listeners. And here there is some responsibility for production, that is constantly "channel" the attention, too much, for so-called "soft-rock" (that is trendy screams), and then when you try to "inject" more authors who require hearing demanding, people are surprised. And then if they are not well known authors, there exists a "shock" on the assessments and ...... same time that the production tries to arouse people's attention to authors in the areas of folk, ethnic, african, latin, world music, celtic, country, jazz, blues, etc., the ears of the some listeners seem to suffer a panic attack and momentarily fade ..... Well, it seems that the programming "ideal" would be to give equal exposure proportional to all types of music (even at the expense of losing some listeners usual, but make many others). As an author before composing a new song, has no guaranteed recipe for success, so the radio also does not know the right recipe. Still, I have to acknowledge (and thank) for the RP is probably making more effort to the criterion that just spur, on the international radio stations. And you have no illusions, the majority of interested listeners, are not even registered and have never written a single line in the comments on these pages and never given a score to a song. Listen, enjoy or "stand up" in silence the arrival of "their song" and never protest.Well said calypsus, as you say a lot of thought has gone into the menu of this Radio Programme and I for one appreciate and listen with an open ear and especially artists I have never heard before, RP is responsible for widening my knowledge of music and to others that I recommend via the artists sites or AMG. And as you say, the moaners seem to have a limited/blinkered ear. My appreciation and thanks go to the Hosts and compilers of an excellent RP.

It's bolero-ish (lower-case 'b'), but not Ravel's Bolero (upper case 'B'). A bolero is a music form. Zumurud definitely has the "look and feel", but let us know our music history.
Yes exactly I wasn't disputing that, So Ravel never heard a '' Bolero'' before writing his piece ???
Boléro epitomises Ravel's preoccupation with restyling and reinventing dance movements. It was also one of the last pieces he composed before illness forced him into retirement: the two piano concertos and the Don Quichotte à Dulcinée song cycle were the only compositions that followed Boléro.
P.S. So in view of your comment mread ALL Bolero compositions will sound exactly if not Identical to 'Ravels' as all waltzes and other forms of dance music will sound identical, ???
