Morphine - Radar (Nov 02, 2007 - 09:53) | Never heard Morphine till RP. Now a big fan. Most groups that are similar sound like some kinda wannabees. These guys are good.
Ane Brun - Balloon Ranger (Nov 02, 2007 - 09:15) | not again. twice in three days? I thought maybe if I listened to the lyrics this time it would be palatable. Instead, it's dragging out the metaphor painfully.
R.E.M. - Crush with Eyeliner (Nov 02, 2007 - 07:46) | just shows to go you, I bought this a while ago, and was disappointed. Now I'm liking it pretty good.
Queens Of The Stone Age - No One Knows (Nov 01, 2007 - 13:11) | Gryn wrote: This almost sounded like the Beatles.
So I gave it a 1.
you mean, because nobody could, and nobody should? Or because this song sucks? Anyway, not-Beatle like at all. And doesn't really suck, just derivative.
Mumbo Gumbo - Big Life (Nov 01, 2007 - 13:08) | this would be great to hear live in an outdoor bar...but otherwise...
Dave Alvin - Highway 61 (Nov 01, 2007 - 12:23) | stevetheshoe wrote:
What's "canned" about the backup? Dave is one of the best guitarists today.
all same, all the time, nothing unexpected.
Dave Alvin - Highway 61 (Nov 01, 2007 - 12:20) | don't get it...how does a canned backup and dripping cool voice count for a good cover?
The Beatles - Rocky Raccoon (Oct 30, 2007 - 11:47) | Faulplz wrote:
I have to agree here - though it hasn't always been intolerable for me, I do find that I hate it a little bit more every time I hear it. Perhaps it's like hearing your spouse tell the same joke 50 times over the course of your relationship?
Oh, THAT's why....
Til Tuesday - Voices Carry (Oct 30, 2007 - 11:15) | totally unfair to them to follow Stand By Me...this 90s sigh-music is really boring.
Ben E. King - Stand By Me (Oct 30, 2007 - 11:13) | Moormann wrote: Another Tom Dowd-recorded classic. Notice the seperation of the instruments in the mix, especially the bass. Masterful.
thanks for backgr info...yes a real treat to listen to, again and again.

1 Nil Recurring- Robert Fripp at his most intense playing lead on this one. Great instrumental.
ok..nailed being fripp-ers!!!
Lyle Lovett - Friend Of The Devil (Oct 17, 2007 - 11:49) | I am sure that fanatics will send assasins, but I think I'm going to get this album so I can hear some great songs without that guy's whiney nasal voice from G.D.
Golden Earring - Radar Love (Oct 17, 2007 - 11:39) | Am i soft in the head, that I hated this when it came out, but now I don't get the shingles listening to it?
The Durutti Column - Requiem For Mother (Oct 16, 2007 - 10:36) | fretman wrote: Not that all music has to be happy or upbeat, but this stuff is music to inhale exhaust fumes by, or just maybe leave the oven gas on to.
Yeah, its trying for that world-beat thing with the choro guitar style run through a chorus and 6/8 time signature, which are becoming hackneyed cliches of Narada or Windham Hill newage/world music, but it does not convey genuineness or sincerity. Thus, it will be relegated to my musical circular file. Nice try, Mr. Column.
really. I'm switching to one of the excellent CDs I bought because I heard it on RP.
Squeeze - Take Me I'm Yours (Oct 16, 2007 - 09:31) | ok, the lead singer's got a good driving voice, the fuzziness is interesting, but the lyrics SUCK!
Traffic - Glad (Oct 03, 2007 - 08:19) | okay - dating myself - this was one of the few rock albums my older sister has when I was starting high school, and got me into pop music, since I only listened to and played classical, vintage jazz, and folk. I think I wore out the record.
James Gang - Funk #49 (Oct 03, 2007 - 08:01) | I know this isn't a musically critic substantive comment, but I turned up the volume on this.
Arctic Monkeys - Fluorescent Adolescent (Oct 03, 2007 - 07:21) | crockydile wrote: I'm officially over the "isn't it cute to use an accent with regional terms" to get a new sound....
Disagree. Everybody who doesn't do standard London / Midwest is trying to be cute?
Cheeky lyrics; fun.
Aimee Mann - Red Vines (Oct 02, 2007 - 07:51) | is it my imagination, or if you remove the sensuality, her voice is like K. Carpenter (sorry, blanking on her first name)?
Suzanne Vega - Blood Makes Noise (Oct 02, 2007 - 06:58) | I really really liked and listened to her a lot about 10 or more years ago. haven't in a while, and hearing this reminds me how much I like her music.
Liz Phair - Ride (Oct 01, 2007 - 13:34) | who can like cotton-candy 60s ripoff, with little self-involved vocal fillups?
Elton John - Funeral For a Friend - Love Lies Bleeding (Oct 01, 2007 - 13:03) | littlerat wrote:
Yeah, I admit that, as much as I respect and appreciate the talent of Sir Elton John (why are people knighted for being talented?), this song really bores the snot out of me. Especially the spacey synth section. BLAAAAHHH.
Uh, knighted for making enough money to affect GDP.
Niyaz - Nahan (The Hidden) (Sep 28, 2007 - 09:39) | hilarious posts. I don't think Rumi would write poetry about sending missiles to America.
The Derek Trucks Band - Crow Jane (Sep 26, 2007 - 11:23) | jeez, anybody with falsetto is like Prince? I agree, he's a great guitarist, he's great with Allman Bros, and has a great band. Not afraid to mix it up, stylistically.
Jefferson Airplane - Embryonic Journey (Sep 26, 2007 - 09:16) | so good, like what's-his-name, kottke, who does the 12 string. My wife has this album and I've always avoided it because it had such a wanker title. I'll have to check it out.
Metric - Rock Me Now (Sep 25, 2007 - 07:18) | cool. Almost conceited, but it isn't. It works. Starts to have that hypnotic effect of unexpected poetry.
