Simon & Garfunkel - America (May 18, 2013 - 09:59) | WonderLizard wrote: Does it say something about us as a culture that a song about lost youth has become a touchstone of sorts? I mean, you don't have Leonard Cohen crooning, "We're off in search of Canada..."
Leonard Cohen may not have done the "off in search of Canada" thing, but lots of other Canadian performers have, including Gordon Lightfoot, Stompin' Tom Connors and Ian Tyson. For what it's worth, I do not know whether Stompin' Tom ever mentioned Lightfoot by name, but he was disdainful of those Canadian singers/songwriters who went south of the border to seek fame and dollars. He felt they were not true Canadians.
Take care.

Vienna Teng - Blue Caravan (May 09, 2013 - 05:50) | I heard the other day that Vienna Teng has taken up residence in Ann Arbor while she is working on a degree master's degree in global sustainability at the University of Michigan.
I'll have to look for her at the football games.

I've tried with my two children but they are lured away by the nonsense that their friends listen to. Am working on them subliminally, playing them RP whilst they sleep!! Any suggestions from other parents welcomed!
Two suggestions:
First, have it on as background noise in a central part of the house. They'll pick up bits and pieces. My kids love the shallow pop that they hear on the radio, but I watched with amazement the other day as my younger daughter strolled through the kitchen singing "Wish You Were Here."
Second: Challenge them to listen to a song and then have them compare it to what they are hearing on the radio today. I was in the car with one of the daughters recently when "Brass In Pocket" came on the radio. I asked her to compare the desperate emotion in Chrissie Hynde's voice to the AutoTuned music she hears today. She got it.
We as "old people" are never going to win the battle. All we can do is hope the next generation can discover deeper, richer, more rewarding music on their own.
Best wishes.

The Beatles - Eleanor Rigby (Apr 09, 2013 - 07:19) | I heard William Shatner's version of this on the radio last Saturday. After all these years, his interpretation remains ... special.

Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart (Mar 16, 2013 - 12:55) | Remember Captain and Tennille, "Love, love will keep us together"? The story I heard on the CBC the other day said that this song was written in direct response to Captain and Tennille's bouncy yet insipid hit.

It was a moment tinged with both pride and pain.

Joan Baez - Diamonds and Rust (Feb 19, 2013 - 13:30) | Joan Baez, a New York City native, was a fixture of the Northeast folk scene in the 1970s. This was released in 1975, just as New York's punk scene was taking off. After listening to this yet again, it's easy to see how a new generation of New Yorkers could reject this in favor of simplistic three-chord songs played fast and loud.

Neko Case - Star Witness (Feb 06, 2013 - 10:03) | My one and only complaint with RP: When songs overlap in transition and the first few notes of the next song mingle with the final few notes of the song that is ending. On most songs it doesn't matter. On this one, to me at least, it does.

Beth Orton - Call Me the Breeze (Jan 02, 2013 - 07:34) | Sugaring Season? Okay, here's a question for you: What's the difference between a maple syrup maker in Vermont and one in New Hampshire?
The Vermonter goes out to gather the sap, opens the lid to the bucket on the tree, finds a dead squirrel in the sap, looks around to see if no one is looking, removes the dead squirrel and collects the sap.
The New Hampshire maple syrup maker goes out to gather the sap, opens the lid to the bucket on the tree, finds a dead squirrel in the sap, looks around to see if no one is looking, rings out the dead squirrel and collects the sap.
Thanks to my friends in New England for that one!

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here (w/ Stephane Grappelli) (Apr 17, 2012 - 04:21) | I dunno...
The original — or the one that I am certainly most familiar with — is plaintive enough. Grappelli's violin certainly adds a new aspect, but I can't say that it takes this to a new level. To me, it's more distracting than anything else.
I think if I were to mess with this today, I'd bring in Yo-Yo Ma and his cello and have him tap into the sweet yet melancholic vibe he created on his recording of "Songs My Mother Taught Me."

Moe - New York City (Jul 28, 2011 - 07:13) | Although I like the song, I'm not sure it captures New York City. The rhythm of the falling rain? I've been to New York, Bangkok, Reykjavik, Paris and elsewhere. Falling rain sounds the same in every city. A 5 a.m. cab ride? I could take a 5 a.m. cab ride in Cleveland. Manhattan goddess with your Levi's and curls? The women I've known in Manhattan wouldn't go near a pair of Levi's!
New York City is special because of its manic, neurotic grandeur. Although the composer was trying to portray an intimate relationship, I think the lyrics are just too generic to accurately reflect a love affair with a city that is unlike anyplace else.
My two cents.

Built To Spill - Hindsight (Oct 08, 2010 - 09:57) | TwinEngine wrote: It's true: in Canada, morning comes in freight ships while you're sleeping. This has some downsides. In 1993 there was a horrible Nautical Disaster in which it seems a morning freighter was, indeed, Built to Spill. Off the British Columbia coast, morning spilt from the damaged vessel across the country, reversing the natural order in which those in the east wake up first. Many of us in the west were traumatized by having been woken up much too early, during deep REM sleep. Greenpeace members, who would have been the first to point out the inherit dangers of shipping morning, were too dazed to organize themselves. The morning industry has only grown since then, controlled by a few Japanese exporters whose red-sun flags remind us who controls whom. And while there have been no other incidents, many Canadians go to bed nervous each night, not knowing which would be worse: if morning never came, or if it came too soon.
Rust Never Sleeps.

John Lee Hooker - Boogie Chillen (Oct 29, 2009 - 14:05) | "When I first came to town, people, I was walkin´ down Hastings Street, I heard everybody talkin´ ´bout the Henry Swing Club."
Hastings Street was the center of black life in Detroit from the 1920s to the 1950s. One particular section was called "Paradise Valley" for its collection of bars and clubs that could rival anything in Harlem.
John Lee Hooker arrived in Detroit in 1943, and quickly made a name for himself.

Joe Jackson - Steppin' Out (Apr 12, 2008 - 14:56) | Perhaps someone else has mentioned this in the past, but the cover drawing of Jackson at the piano evokes the art of the great Al Hirschfeld, whose work ran in The New York Times for nearly 75 years. The lines are simple, fluid and uncluttered, and emphasize shape and texture. All we need is "Nina" hidden in a couple of places! Sunday mornings just are not the same without Hirschfeld's work on the cover of the Arts and Leisure Section...

Steely Dan - Aja (Apr 02, 2008 - 09:55) | This is the answer to 2 Down in today's NY Times crossword puzzle.
|
Steely Dan - The Royal Scam (Mar 20, 2008 - 07:52) | I understand that these guys have now moved down to Florida, where they wear their pants above their waists, go to the early-bird dinners and complain about the government.

Neko Case - Buckets of Rain (Mar 20, 2008 - 04:42) | Judging by the distinct lack of comments this morning, it would appear I'm the only one awake in the Eastern Time Zone.

Crosby Stills & Nash - Southern Cross (Mar 18, 2008 - 19:02) | I had wanted to see the Southern Cross since I was a kid.
I got my chance on a 1992 trip to Phuket Island, Thailand, but was disappointed - it was just too hazy every night.
After dinner on our last night on Phuket, my wife and I took a walk down the beach and the sky cleared. There it was! The Southern Cross!
We found a couple of chairs and we sat under the dark sky, and I poured my heart out about how much this moment meant to me. This was one of the special moments of my life.
I sat quiet for a moment waiting for my wife to speak. Finally I heard from her. It was a long, loud snore. Yes, she had fallen asleep.

Prince - When Doves Cry (Mar 13, 2008 - 06:35) | Anybody else see Stephen Colbert mime this song at the Smithsonian? Funnier than hell.

The Who - Cut My Hair (Feb 12, 2008 - 09:21) | To those who do not like:
Okay, this may not be your favorite tune or album, but to call it "self-indulgent" and "tripe" misses the point.
This entire album refects what artists and playwrites call "the human condition." Yes, it is viewed through one character's eyes, but it still reflects the world around him -- and us.
Much of the highest-rated music on RP refects the human condition: "The Boxer", "Wish You Were Here", "A Day in the Life". Every genre of music today reflects the human condition. But I cannot think of a single artist or band in the past 20 years that had the balls and the intellect to tackle a subject like teen angst and alienation with as much boldness and insight as this.
Rock and roll is not a genre that lends itself to deep insight. What can you possibly say in 3:20 to people with short attention spans? That's why an effort like this is so special.

Cake - I Will Survive (Feb 05, 2008 - 09:25) | He should have changed what kind of lock? Is that a name brand?

Beethoven - Symphony No.5 - Allegro Con Brio (Jan 06, 2008 - 18:30) | Yes, this movement is allegro con brio, but Von Karajan conducts as if he just had a Jaegerbomb or something. But that's one of the wonderful things about this kind of music -- it is so open to interpretation and exploration that it continues to sound fresh even though it was written 200 years ago.
