Why compare them? They're both wonderful!!

Perfectly said, thank you!

I love both Kate's and Chrissie's oeuvres.  As artists they're very, very different from each other — but each is an amazing one-of-a-kind.  No comparisons apply.

The Shins: yet another wonderful product of New Mexico — like GREEN CHILES!!

Hear, hear!

(And some tracks from Todd's Rundgren's "Faithful" albumn would also be nice . . . . )

Shawn Colvin - One Cool Remove

Is this woman gay or does it just seem like it?

Who gives a flyin' f*ck with whom she makes love?  Shawn Colvin is a brilliant musician and performer; I'm grateful that she has shared her talents with us for so long.  Beyond that, it's her personal life and she can live it as she wants.

The Beatles - You Never Give Me/The End

Maybe it's because they were way before my time or something else, but I never quite *get* the Beatles. To my unsophisticated ear, there is no rhythm or melody here to like. Did you have to "be there" to like this? Please enlighten me - and I say that quite seriously. I really want to know. What should I be noticing here?

You find The Beatles' music to have no rhythm or melody?  Really?!?  That's so obviously not true!  I'm sorry for you that you're cursed with such a disability, friend. {#Sad}

Ben Folds Five - Alice Childress
(Aug 23, 2010 - 17:03)
Rundgrenesque, definitely.  Also reminiscent of Joe Jackson.  Me likey.

XTC - Summer's Cauldron

Todd Rundgren's production and engineering also ad to the greatness.

Absolutely!  Todd also did some re-arranging and, according to reliable rumor, played some of the acoustic guitar tracks, too.  This album wouldn't have succeeded without his input . . . well worth the $500K that he was paid for his services.

Ledward Kaapana - Radio Hula
(Jul 27, 2010 - 13:56)
I'm privileged to live where Led lives . . . my friends and I get to see him at Kona Brewing Company in Hawai'i Kai most weekends.  He's an amazing slack key virtuoso, and a really nice guy to boot.

Peter Gabriel - Solsbury Hill
(Jul 26, 2010 - 19:41)
In 1977 this song was an integral part of a major change in my life: it was playing on the cassette deck of my Alfa convertible when I stopped to give a ride to a motorist whose car had broken down on the road from Taos to Santa Fe.  She had heard Genesis, but not PG solo — and she was taken with him and with Solsbury Hill.  I, in turn, was immediately taken with her.  After arranging for a tow truck we stopped for dinner at The Compound, shared a bottle of wine, and ended up spending hours together soaking in a bubbling hot tub at Ten Thousand Waves with a myriad of stars twinkling down on us.  We stayed together until breast cancer took her away from me in 1999.  Hearing this song is bittersweet for me — but much more sweet than bitter.

Every corporate drone in America with a used car and a mortgage was once a teenager staying out too late on a Tuesday night with a group of friends speeding down their town's main strip with the windows open and the radio loud, and when I was that teenager, "So" was the album in the tape deck. I sat in the passenger's seat with my right foot dangling out the window as my best friend drove. The girl he pined for sat in the back with the boy she was dating, my other best friend, and it felt more like a romantic triangle among true comrades from a French movie than the angst-riddled tripe you see on "One Tree Hill." When you love the guy your girl is dating as much as you love the girl, it's the definition of "bittersweet." Whenever "Mercy Street" started trickling through the speakers of that old Grand Am, with its tender, discordant synths followed by the triangle, the atmosphere in the car was hushed. My pal turned the stereo up so loud we couldn't even hear the wind rushing through four open windows. Today, reinhabiting the boy I was, my heart swells like a sponge cake in my chest to remember how happy and at peace I was. We all knew the words by heart, had all read Anne Sexton just to better understand the song, and the unfiltered sadness we experienced from the beginning to the end of that song made us feel magnificently alive and vulnerable, and connected to each other. What I'm trying to say is, I'm never going to finish this report my boss wants by 4:30. Not with "Mercy Street" playing...

  Very well said.  Thanks for posting this.  I'd rate Mercy Street at 20 if it were possible — it's one of the best songs ever written, and it was performed brilliantly.

10 CC - Dreadlock Holiday

Superb!  10cc was one of the most talented bands of the 70s.  I saw them in concert at a small venue with excellent acoustics (Popejoy Hall at the University of New Mexico) in 1977 or '78 . . . it was one of the best performances I've ever seen.  Were there any other RPeeps there?

Reminds me more than a little of Adrian Belew . . . . that's a good thing!

Psychedelic Furs - Love My Way

Brilliant production by Todd Rundgren.  As usual, he knew how to get the best out of the band (even if the band didn't enjoy the process!)

The Trash Can Sinatras - All the Dark Horses

Frank Zappa - Willie The Pimp
(Mar 02, 2010 - 19:24)
Frank Zappa died so young (53), and so needlessly, from prostate cancer — a disease that can nearly always be detected at a curable stage with a combination of PSA blood testing and a digital rectal exam.  It's a shame that so many men are phobic about a having a doctor's gloved-n-lubed finger briefly up their butts, even if only once every couple of years; many lives could be spared if that attitude were to change on a large-scale basis.  {#Sad}

Calexico - House Of Valparaiso
(Mar 02, 2010 - 18:47)
A friend of mine who lives in Valparaiso, Chile, lost his house in the recent earthquake . . . literally "carried to dust" . . . . {#Cry}  Fortunately, his wife and son got out with only minor scrapes and bruises, and my friend wasn't injured at all.

Shivaree - Goodnight Moon

I can't help but think of lovely Uma when I hear this . . . .

XTC - Senses Working Overtime
(Mar 02, 2010 - 18:19)
I enjoy this one — but Skylarking was their best album, IMHO.  Todd Rundgren's production genius really shone through, despite the constant clashes with and defiance from Andy Partridge.

Thanks, Bill — very, very nice for New Year's Day on Kaneohe Bay! {#Yes}

Aloha,

Stevie Wonder - Don't You Worry 'bout A Thing
(Dec 29, 2008 - 15:20)
I don't think Stevie sang "Chevrolet" . . . it's most likely "chévere," an expression used by Cubans, Puerto Ricans, Venezuelans and other Latinos as an affirmative acclamation of approval — sort of like "cool" or "groovy" or "it's all good" in contemporary English. Goes along with the song's theme, "don't you worry 'bout a thing."  {#Cool}

Kate Bush - And So Is Love
(Dec 29, 2008 - 11:58)
Sublime.

Joan Armatrading - Love and Affection
(Dec 28, 2008 - 19:04)

Cha-cha-cha indeed, Mr. Starr!

Halloween Alaska - Call it Clear

Very nice!

Does anyone know anything about this group?  The lead singer's voice sounds familiar, but I can't place him.

Patti Smith - Frederick
(Nov 03, 2008 - 12:05)
No, it's not a punk track.  "Frederick" was heavily influenced by Todd Rundgren's slick production skills; he's responsible for the pop hooks.  Patti resisted, but ultimately relented.  Both she and Todd hoped that Wave would get wider airplay than her previous releases.  It was a partially-successful effort.

Patti Smith - Dancing Barefoot
(Nov 02, 2008 - 18:49)
Todd Rundgren's superb production skills on Wave made Patti much more accessible to then-contemporary listeners.  I loved this album back then, and I still do.  9 {#Dancingbanana_2}

Not just Scottish - bagpipes are common throughout Europe (click here). What's singularly Scottish is the drone created by the 'chanter' which AFAIK you don't find with other types of bagpipe, and which can irritate some folk.

This number is strange: celtic sounds from the bagpipe, played by a Spanish (?) geezer, with electronica backing. Hmm. Dunno. Intriguing enough for an initial 6.

José Ángel Hevia Velasco is from the Principality of Astúrias, a beautiful province in north-central Spain adjoining the Atlantic. The instrument he plays isn't a Scottish bagpipe, it's a gaita.

Most native astúrianos of antiquity were ethnically Celtic -- and the Celt population in the region remains substantial to this day. In fact, there's substantial evidence that Celts populated the Iberian Peninsula well before they migrated to Scotland, Ireland and England (I'll NOT call them the "British Isles"!)

XTC - Grass
(Jun 20, 2008 - 15:33)
Jeff Partyka said it best:

"XTC have given us many more fine songs since Skylarking, but they've never again succeeded in crafting such an evocative, enjoyable experience of an album. I'm a huge fan of the band's but, as much as I would like to believe that XTC could make an album like this in their sleep, it's obvious that producer Todd Rundgren deserves a great deal of credit for Skylarking's achievements. Stories of Partridge's volatile working relationship with Rundgren are legendary in XTC fan circles, but for us listeners any strife was well worth it. As much as I love the rest of the band's output, I don't think they've ever made an album so pure, so bereft of filler, as this one."
