Triggerfinger - I Follow Rivers
(Aug 14, 2012 - 06:38)
Before RP I never heard of this song, now I have heard two versions. I like them both but the other is outstanding.

Bat For Lashes - Glass

Again this song comes on and I am pounding away on my desk. WHAT A DRUM BEAT! Cool it is a female drumer.

Porcupine Tree - Waiting
(Jul 11, 2012 - 12:18)
Crazy! Porcupine Tree+Bongos!  Did not ever imagine the two together.

Lykke Li - I Follow Rivers
(Jul 10, 2012 - 06:16)
Great song! Digging the sound effects.

Pearl Jam - Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town

Pear Jam was questioned why nearly all of their song titles where only one word long. Eddie gave the title in reaction. LOL

Check out me doing this song on YouTube:

Incubus - Drive
(Jun 29, 2012 - 06:42)
AMAZING SONG! Check out me playing/ singing it on YouTube. :)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvlPvFgnZP4&feature=plcp

Pink Floyd - Coming Back To Life
(Jun 14, 2012 - 09:23)
SCREW "THE WALL" and screw Roger Waters. This is the best work by Pink Floyd, only the close-minded disagree. This is probably the best song ever by them.

Van Morrison - And It Stoned Me
(Jun 05, 2012 - 09:41)
Anyone explain to me the "stoned me just like jellyroll"? I never did have a clue about this.

Bat For Lashes - Glass
(Jun 01, 2012 - 13:29)
I love her voice, but the awesome drum beats in this song overpowers everything. Great stuff

Billy Preston - Outa Space

LOL good call.

I am so glad that this instrument is never used anymore. It sounds ridiculous!

Guster - Ruby Falls
(Apr 25, 2012 - 09:53)
This is the song that turned me onto Guster. Never stopped loving it. Although I like their other work, nothing else compares to this one.

Porcupine Tree - Disappear
(Apr 18, 2012 - 05:10)
Wait, this version is different, never heard it before. Is this newer or older?

Indigo Girls - Share The Moon
(Mar 12, 2012 - 11:59)
Indigo Girls with a male vocalist? What gives? His voice sounds familiar, is he in another band that is played here in RP? Perhaps Iron and wine?

The Monkees - Daydream Believer
(Mar 02, 2012 - 08:08)
Awesome! The Monkees on RP. Regardless of who REALLY sang the songs, I loved their work.

Remy Zero - Gramarye
(Feb 27, 2012 - 11:57)
Great tune. Totally forgot about this one. Thanks RP!

Etta James - Welcome To The Jungle
(Feb 27, 2012 - 11:04)
Make it stop!!! I wish I woulda never heard this song, ruins my impression of her. She was one of the great ones.

Dan Mangan - Road Regrets
(Feb 22, 2012 - 11:51)
Took me awhile, but I like this guy and love this song

Elbow - Mirrorball
(Jan 11, 2012 - 11:02)
Thanks RP for turning me onto Elbow. I love all his work, especially this one.

Heck, he even has a song in a video game. DiRT2 :)

Agreed!

Peter Gabriel - Burn You Up Burn You Down
(Jan 04, 2012 - 09:08)
Gabriels best song IMO. I would have never heard this song were it not for the game MYST: URU. Great game-great song

The Raconteurs - Many Shades of Black (w/ Adele)
(Dec 08, 2011 - 08:37)
NICE!! her amazing voice with a great band, throw in a little 50s rock beat in there.

Sarah Jarosz - The Tourist
(Nov 18, 2011 - 20:27)
EPIC FREAKING FAIL!!!!! Any artist attempting to cover Radiohead needs to work harder than this. The Tourist is a beautiful song, ruined by the obnoxious banjo and fiddle in this rendition. Ever wonder what the difference is between violin and fiddle? The crap in this song is not considered a violin.

Porcupine Tree - Disappear

Adele - Rolling In The Deep
(Jun 15, 2011 - 11:39)

How could anyone hate this song? It has a pure, vintage sound with some great vocals.

Johnny Cash - Hurt
(Mar 09, 2011 - 10:26)
I absolutly hated this song when it first came out, thinking it was an insult to the NIN song. But as the years go by i find that this is a beautiful representation of stressing the guitar work in the song. The first time I picked up my guitar to sing and play this, I realized that he did great with the translation of this song to an acoustic guitar.

I live on 50 densely wooded acres in rural Ottawa, capital of Canada. One warm summer night as I was going to sleep listening to a score of bullfrogs croaking in the pond, I heard a loud, repetitive screech. I knew all the owl sounds, and this was not among them. It went on for many minutes, so I got a 15,000,000 candlepower lantern and went on a search for this new animal sound. The sound did not diminish as I approached the tree from which the sound arose. Finally, I saw the source of that strange sound: a humungous porcupine (female, as I was to soon find out) screeching to attract a male porky, who was hot to trot over from the next tree. They soon found each other, and the screeching began to mount—pun intended. Thereafter, that popular poplar became known as the Porcupine Tree.

Great story, it does make me wonder where the band name came from even more.

GOD I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!
And I totally disagree with the negative thoughts on the direction of the advances in technology. With an increasingly overpopulating planet I think it will be best to dwell in a virtual environment. Yes it may be a little less personal, but who cares IMHO, I am anti-social anyways. And think of it as preparation for the "Space Age". Folks lets face it, one day this planet will not be fit for humans. If the race will survive, we will be traveling in vehicles for long periods, not going to shopping malls, parks, etc. And sure this wont happen overnight.

Possibly, but its looking quite likely that it contributes to psychosis in individuals with a predisposition. I worked in a psychiatric hospital for 4 years and young acute males were helping to make themselves even worse by smoking as much as they could without restrictions. There seems to be evidence that it can lead to Schizophrenic behaviour. But its the individuals choice... I used to smoke as much as i could then started getting really paranoid and now am very forgetful. I don't really care what people do to themselves as long as they don't harm me or my friends/family.

Oh that is true, over consumption is not a good thing. Furthermore, I do not think it is a good idea for a teenager to use this, since they are already without the ability to think rationally (psychology 101). Me personally, I see it helps me focus, which is hard at times having ADHD. Would I use it at work, no. And as far as harming you or your family, I cant see how marijuana would do it, as opposed to alcohol. Cigerettes and alcohol kill people, marijuana just alters thoughts.

horstman,

Sorry to hear that your mother still smokes tobacco.  But glad to hear that you 'matured' out of pot a few years ago.  Been a good boy for a few months here and abstinence definitely helps get things done, do more physical exercise, sleep better over the long run, etc.

Funny, I was around my parents on several occasions after having smoked hashish. They never suspected a thing. I showed up for my 15th birthday dinner so stoned on black Afghanie hashish I could hardly make out details on the dining room wall.  No suspicion, not a word.

Incidentally, I had 'smoked up' earlier that day in a friend's home next door to the prime minister's executive assistant's house. This was during the FLQ crisis—where the Front de liberation du Quebec kidnapped the British trade commissioner James Cross and the provincial minister of Labour—and the place was crawling with uniformed, gun-toting Canadian soldiers.  For young adolescents, it was all very trippy.

I'll bet experiences similar to yours and mine were being played out all over North America during that period. It's a good reminder that reasonably well-educated and otherwise 'liberal' folk can get just as hysterical as anybody else.

BTW, did you ever watch the cult-classic film Reefer Madness?  As a senior high school student, I remember (I really do!) going to a showing at Carleton University in Ottawa.  The entire audience was stoned and laughing so hard, it was impossible to hear the soundtrack.  Cathartic.

SCREW THAT!!!!! Gonje never HURT anyone. If there is one solid reason  that it is illegal it is for the simple fact that it is (when grown naturally and not smoked) very good for the human body. Whats my point? Alcohol is very legal and very welcomed by your government for the simple reason that it kills people and makes others get killed by it (DUI, OD, etc.). If you think that governments dont want population control, then you are fooling yourself! Another note is that THC allows the average person to use parts of their minds they would not normally use. So if the masses had an open mind of perception, these suppresive government styles (such as our crappy Democratic Republic in the US), would be overthrown.

Ok I am done with the vent.

When it first came out, I heard the reviews of this from some top UK magazine, "Earth shattering and life saving" I was thinking it was an exaggeration, but it was not. Gnarls Barkley - Crazy
(Sep 26, 2008 - 11:05)
Fun song. You all will think I am "crazy" when I say that I thought this was Aritha Franklin when I first heard it. LOL

R.E.M. - World Leader Pretend
(Sep 26, 2008 - 07:33)
I agree. If you look at music historically in interpretation, you will see that eventually everything is repeated over time. Artist cannot totally change their style, inspirations etc. There are only so many chords, pitch, ranges, and octaves at an artist's disposal.

Soundgarden - Fell On Black Days
(Sep 24, 2008 - 08:36)
AHHHH YES I love Soundgarden. I listened to the CD soooo many times when it was new and years following, that when that song ended I was listening for the next song on the album.

Soundgarden and Rage Against the Machine should regroup as their own bands again!!!

Violent Femmes - Crazy

I think the Femmes are Crazy for doing this. Kinda funny though, I thought it was Richard Cheese at first.

The original cannot be touched, because Gnarles just has a humourous touch in his voice. Don't know how to explain it, but it has a happy feel to it.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Otherside
(Sep 19, 2008 - 09:36)
First time hearing the Red Hots on RP. I can dig it!

This band just keeps on rocking.{#Guitarist}

GRRRRRREAT SONG!!!! I love her lyrics. Not your typical country style. I guess she gets shoved into the "Country" music genre because there are steal guitars and stand-up bass?

I was rejected
But I came back for more

He grew up with abusive or negligent parents.

And my ashes fall over all the things we've said
On a box of photographs under the bed

And my ashes find a way beyond the fog
And return to save the child that I forgot
And my ashes fade among the things unseen
And a dream plays in reverse on piano keys

Then he dies (commits suicide?).  Then his spirit (his ashes), falling over the world, reviewing his memories, finds a way to go back in time, and rescue the child that he was.

Maybe it's a literal time-travel and rescue; or maybe it's just a reconciliation with himself after death.

The term for such a song is called an "earworm" (lovely imagery, huh?) and you're right, this song is incredibly annoying. A -2 from me as well.

earworm eh? I like it. Nice to have terminology for this. Thanks.

Groovy tune, even if it does sound like Ms. Elton John.

What??!! No banjo? Why is that part cut out. I always hated the banjo until I heard the Gomez song How We Operate.

Interesting thought on what the lyrics mean, I'd be curious to know for sure. For me, I recall listening to this when I heard on the radio that the shuttle Columbia had crashed. The "60-ton angel falls to the Earth" and "radiant blur" lyrics just seemed too perfect. All in all the song seems a somber reflection of a memory of a love at a certain time and place specific to him.

What I like most about SW's song writing here is his ability to be slightly familiar/slightly vague while painting this wonderful imagery with words, and evoking an emotion regardless of understanding where he's coming from. And of course the music is just brilliant.

Agreed with the wonderful imagery. My favorite style of writing is one that has the listener thinking. SW is truly great.

Supergrass - Tales Of Endurance

This totally rocks. The guitarist must have a Les Paul to sound so much like Jimmy the Page.
Frank Black - (Do What You Want) Gyaneshwar
(Jul 10, 2008 - 06:11)
MAKE IT STOP!!! PLEASE MAKE IT STOP!!!! This is one of those songs that gets stuck in my head, eventhough I despise it.

Rating = -2
The Magic Numbers - Forever Lost

Great tune with a sexy voice in the melody. Quite fitting that the dudes look like primates and sound like The Monkies.
Kent - Musik Non Stop

Any Deftones fans out there???? If Chino Moreno spoke the language this is what he would sound like.

I have no clue what they are saying, but THIS...ROCKS!

I have always loved this song. The guitars are great and her voice is soooooooo sexy.
Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill
(Jul 09, 2008 - 10:32)
This song stunk in the 80's and it has yet to improve, even when played in elevators.
Arcade Fire - Keep The Car Running

The last time PT played Cincinnati they ate at a restaurant very close to the club called The Holy Grail. This tour we decided to go there for dinner and hope for the best, and about 20 minutes after we got there Wes came in to eat dinner with some local friends. We chatted with him for a few minutes and took a couple of pics and then left him in peace to enjoy his dinner

He's an amazingly friendly, gracious, warm guy.

And the show that night was to die for

All the guys in PT are very friendly and normally they hang around outside the tourbus to chat with fans after every show unless one of them is sick or something Steven Wilson is a very sweet, charismatic guy that seems genuinely perplexed but extremely happy that people love his music so much. Kind of the absent minded professor type

Gavin tends to be a little more shy

Amazing, just amazing. I somehow have become even more fond of these guys. Didn't think it was possible.

I always thought of the over usage of G-D-C as a guitarist. But what about the fourth? A (major) I am thinking. When you break music down there is only so many directions that you can go. Non standard tuning was the only escape, but in the past two decades, the drop D tuning has become the same with over using.

BTW. Porcupine Tree is one of the best all time bands. Mr. Wilson has given me new life as a guitarist.

By the way, let me apologize to all Germans and foreigners here at RP and explain that Texas is not really part of the U.S. Texas actually invaded the U.S. in 2000, and ever since we Americans have been living under the Texan occupation as well as we can. Sorry about that.

Thats funny.
The Decemberists - Summersong

Nice song. This guys voice reminds me of someone in the 80s. Anyone know who?
Donovan - Sunshine Superman

SWEET! I love the Monkies!
Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter - The Dreaming Dead

AHHH I love the vintage sound. Her voice is not the greatest, but the music is great. Phil Wandscher has such an awesome guitar style.

Excellent observation there. I also thought of Gavin's style to be similar to Neil Peart.

This is such a relaxing song. What the heck could Lips of Ashes mean? Is it necrophilia?
Better Than Ezra - In the Blood

What happened to this band? I always liked their work.
Tom Petty - Feel A Whole Lot Better
(Jun 26, 2008 - 13:30)
I would "Feel A Whole Lot Better" if ol' Tom would go ahead and retire. Since this song was released a long time ago, he has gotten pretty dull.
At least he sounds less like Bob Dylan these days. The only problem now is he is sounding more like Bullwinkle! yuk-yuk "Hey Rocky, watch me pull a song out of my hat".

Bush - Letting The Cables Sleep
(Jun 26, 2008 - 11:36)
My all time favorite Bush song. Sadly, it got very little airplay when it was released. Could this be why it is so good? :hehe:
Paloalto - Breathe In
(Jun 26, 2008 - 11:07)
Good call. Sounds much like Petty, Radiohead, and Bono. I first heard this on streaming audio when it the song was new. I think it was Spinner. Great song!

Porcupine Tree - Sentimental

How can so many dislike this band. Their music is TIMELESS. Not allot of bands could have this said about them....at all.

Spoon - Rhythm & Soul

ANYONE THAT DOES NOT LIKE SPOON, DOES NOT HAVE A PULSE!!! no apologies for the caps either :)
Porcupine Tree - Halo
(Jun 25, 2008 - 13:46)
Due to many video game referneces in PT songs and in "Lightbulb Sun" there is "XBOX is a god to me", I conclude that this song was inspired by the game Halo. This was actually the first song that I heard by these rock gods. I was very fond of Halo PC for many years, so this caught my attention.
Porcupine Tree - Trains
(Jun 25, 2008 - 06:55)
I dont think that this song is political at all. I interpret this as a train that crashes (Scars in the country=remnents of the wreck); and the train nearly hit the (first person) of the story (When I hear the engine pass, im kissing you wide, the hissing subsides, Im in luck). Anyone else get the same?

This song rocks, especially with the unique riff of A7-Am-C-C7. What a talented song writer Mr. Wilson is. A very fun song to play and sing too. =)

I am not a Coldplay fan... but this isn't bad. The background vocals are reminiscent of cheesy 80's pop (anyone recall Baltimora's "Tarzan Boy"?). Sadly, this will be overplayed & I will tire of it soon enough (and the Mac ad won't help)...

LMAO...Tarzan Boy. Good call. I actually forgot about that song. Now thanks to you it will probably take over and get stuck in my head for a decade or so. But, I like the backing vocals. I saw them perform at the music awards and I thought to myself, "Dude, please don't dance and get back behind that piano and stay".
