I was looking for the "true" account of the song - the most popular urban legend that most people know is this is about a young woman who was kidnapped leaving a punk concert, raped and tortured, but by gaining the trust of her captor was able to finally escape. Snopes.com doesn't have an official stance either way, though Wikipedia backs this up, citing the book Come as You Are: The Story of Nirvana.. More disturbing is a note by Cobain in the liner notes of Incesticide which read "Last year, a girl was raped by two wastes of sperm and eggs while they sang the lyrics to our song 'Polly,"
Sorry to disturb any of you who may be offended by the song origin. Though it may spark an interesting debate on whether one can like an piece of artistic expression (like a song) based on its merits and not the beliefs it expresses/behaviours it may induce.
This is a very confusing story...how can the origin be about a crime that was committed while singing the song??????

I liked the band, until KC's idea of an "alternative" radio station was to
"alternate" between the Chilli Peppers and the Beasty Boys. Very very tiresome.
|
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Under The Bridge (Jul 01, 2008 - 10:52) | You are all wrong, the song is about living under a bridge, as all the heroin adicts end up there.
I also could easily never hear this one again.

Big Brother And The Holding Company - Piece Of My Heart (Jul 01, 2008 - 10:46) | lee_sf wrote: Maybe I've heard it too many times, over too many years. Maybe it's the 60's flavor. Maybe I just never grokked Janice. In any case, I'd be OK if I never heard this song again.
Me And Bobby McGee... better.
It's a woman thing.

XTC - Dear God (Jun 30, 2008 - 12:52) | sdn wrote:
As an atheist who finds "In God We Trust" offensive, let me respond.
I find it offensive because it is an attempt to speak for me. The phrase is on our currency in an attempt to present the United States as a religious nation, and to say that we-as-a-whole trust in God.
Well, I don't. And I find it offensive that certain people wish to speak for me. Sure, majority rule and all that, but religious conviction is a personal statement, not a collective one. I'd find it as offensive if it said "We Trust Republicans" when the Republicans have a majority in Congress, and "We Trust Democrats" when Democrats do. It's a silly phrase, a waste of time, and an attempt to speak for each individual.
I don't feel strongly enough to sue to have the phrase removed, but hey -- more power to those who are suing.
I don't think that the words will make me suddenly become a believer, nor that they have any power over my beliefs, nor over the beliefs of anyone else. It's just an offensive public statement of a personal belief -- one that millions of Americans don't share. The Great Pumpkin is silly as well, but nobody's trying to tell me I trust in the Great Pumpkin.
Bravo

Before then, you can only believe or disbelieve on FAITH. I have faith that god as currently taught by Christians is a big fallacy. But who am I to say. But I ain't going to go kill myself just to learn the truth. God will just to have to wait. Meanwhile I'll just have to live life by the golden rule of treating other people like I myself would like to be treated and hope that I don't botch it very often, which is what I'm prone to do. Often. God Bless. Or Not.
Good Job!

most of the time , I would agree with you, but you can't do that with a song that lasts more than 10 minutes. And you don't fool me , you have things that irritate you too!

That borders on sacrilege! The amount of praise that continues to be heaped on Jack White just amazes me. He's not bad, but come on...as good as Zeppelin? What's so earth-shattering about what he's doing? This song isn't bad, but it's not amazing...a solid 7. Hardly better than "Stairway", "Ramble On", "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You", "Heartbreaker"...should I continue?
I am with you on that!

I didn't care for sailing shoes , but sneakin' sally is good!

This is why there is a rating function. make your rating, but you don't have to post unless you have something to say. And post away, who cares if other's don't like your posts?
