Robert Plant made an honest effort to sing in a style that was similar to the odd middle eastern scales that are routinely used in the indigigenous music of those places. He was advised by some of the local musicians, during the sessions, that he was not singing the scales "right" and they offered to teach him. Robert declined the offer politely saying that it would muck up his own expression, sort of throwing a wrench into a fun thing. I'm sure these scales are not easy to learn for a grown man who has been raised on modern "tonal" music which features semi-tones and whole tones, etc etc. The music that Plant was trying to incorporate featured what we call micro tones. Those are quarter tones and smaller intervals. I say good for him for trying and for doing as much as any one else to expose westerners to these great worlds of music. A for effort.
Here's a little snippet for Zeps Kashmir. Seems appropriate
"Talk and song from tongues of lilting grace, whose sounds caress my ear
But not a word I heard could I relate, the story was quite clear
Oh, oh.
Oh, I been flying... mama, there ain't no denyin'
I've been flying, ain't no denyin', no denyin' "
yes, very tribal sounding. this post is very informative and yes A for good effort. so good I wouldn't even recogonize who sang this but what would be a real relief is if the sore listener could actually be jolting into the song kashmir right afterwards. :?

as much as I like this song, being from a later generation, I wanted to dig a little deeper into the origins of these people and fell in love with the music of buffalo springfield myself. I very much wished buffalo springfield could of held on to what they had.

Nah, everybody's still trying to get over the shock. I like a complete makeover on a cover now and then.
Even though they play Ozzy's version afterwards I still feel like his is out of place here
........it was an egg.......

Gaelic Storm - Johnny Tarr (Sep 29, 2003 - 10:14) | Is everyman's name in Ireland Johnney? or was he a very very famous man cause he's the only one spoken about in Irish songs. Anyone Irish? Whats the story?

Radio Paradise actually plays DCD and Anggun, another mystery singer. Yippee!
Do you mean everyone brought in their own music? I would never hear anything but fm radio songs from people around here.
Teitur - Amanda's Dream (Sep 21, 2003 - 22:43) | I like it too. Kinda feel like I'm floating between a Paul Simon and......hmmm....maybe a James Taylor song.
Neil Young - Sun Green (Sep 21, 2003 - 03:36) | Thanks for the opportunity to hear one (or maybe more) of Neil's songs from his new album. I like it.
Sting - Send Your Love (Sep 18, 2003 - 18:04) | I don't know. I guess I expect more from him. He has sooo much talent.

I think it has a religious feel to it for her. Not bad. I heard her cover of "stairway to heaven" also. It was worth checking out for me.
Annie Lennox - Don't Let It Bring You Down (Sep 16, 2003 - 11:54) | I've never heard this until today. Nice. At first I thought it was Neil. She almost has the same pitch. The first time I ever heard this song from Neil was live from the 1971 bbc concert I saw on tv (which I have now). I really like how his guitar was tuned.
Phish - Waste (Aug 25, 2003 - 18:09) | I don't really listen to Phish but this is a good tune. Should I give this an 8 just so it's in my list and I can remember it was ok? Kinda wish we could view all our ratings.
Rheostatics - P.I.N. (Jul 23, 2003 - 21:17) | For a second there I thought I heard David Bowie singing! :p
Cyril Pahinui - Panini Pua Kea (Jul 10, 2003 - 17:29) | This did remind me of something from Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti also. Someone said something about slack key? I guess thats a good way to describe the way it sounds. :)
Merrie Amsterburg - Walking On The Moon (Jul 09, 2003 - 20:28) | I like this song by the police but I also like the tempo on this. Every once in a while a slowed down tempo works. Even I do that with my favorite songs when it gets stuck in my brain. :D
The Ocean Blue - Cerulean (Jul 09, 2003 - 15:43) | I only knew songs from their first album and uploaded a couple. Thanks for introducing me to some of their other stuff.

That was nicely put cause I never got into supertramp but just remember the hits from breakfast in america. From the sounds of this song sounds like something I would find worthwhile checking into.

Can we play more prog rock from other less familiar bands?

U2 - Until the End of the World (May 26, 2003 - 01:21) | I had a dream about the end of the world once
When I woke it was a kinda trick or treat thing.
Just before the final moment I closed my eyes really tight.
I almost forgot to pray so I began to pray for what seemed like forever before I began to slowly open my eyes.
The trick was what my mind played on me as I tried to prepare myself for my final moments.
The treat was to find the extremely bright light entering my eyes as I opened them with curiosity of what afterlife would be was the morning sun of another day.
Took me couple days to recover from that dream. :???:
Nick Drake - River Man (May 25, 2003 - 14:53) | I loved the way he tuned his guitar and the way he wrapped his lyrics into the melody. Some of his songs, no matter how many times I listen to it, find it hard still to sing along with. It's the weirdest thing.
Joe Henry - Trampoline (May 22, 2003 - 16:15) | I just came in from moving the trampoline. Hate trying to find that flat spot in the yard everytime it gets moved and mowed under.
Joseph Arthur - In The Sun (May 22, 2003 - 09:21) | Going to give this a high rating. It wasn't the music that grabbed me on this one....it was the lyrics.
The Church - Under The Milky Way (May 22, 2003 - 09:04) | This song caused me to by the "cassette" and fell in love with the whole thing. It became my favorite and so did the next after that....and the next after that. The last one would be the "Sometime Anywhere" cd.
Radiohead - I Might Be Wrong (May 22, 2003 - 08:53) | Finally, I thought to myself, a radiohead song I like. But then I realized that it was just the music part I liked
Goldfrapp - Human (May 22, 2003 - 01:40) | I have to hear this again. All I remember was a first impression of her sounding like a JB (Widespread Panic) female version.

Coldplay - Trouble (May 20, 2003 - 07:32) | this song sounds like another song on the album. "In My Place" I think. But maybe they wanted it to. All the same or not still a nice listen.
Alice In Chains - Don't Follow (May 13, 2003 - 17:23) | oh wow! didn't expect to hear this one from the album. And what a good album it was

Tori Amos - Thank You (May 06, 2003 - 08:19) | ok, well my comment is that I don't think this is "better" than the original but I am a fan of both. I don't think she "trys" to make it better but that some songs she relates to and expresses in her own way just comes out with a different perspective.

Walked around in an altered state of mind listening to this cd through the parks speakers Was very surprised when this came on and was the last song on the cd. Later went out and bought the cd.

You know good question. Sad thing is the beat and rhythm is a first impression with me. Not that I don't eventually listen to lyrics.

Well I read that wrong. '95 and nice album title come back after the '71 album. :D

Bruce Cockburn - Night Train (Apr 12, 2003 - 12:49) | someone commented that this has a nice lolloping feel to it.

Wow everybody is right!!! I guess it DOES sound like Stephen Stills.
Tracy Chapman - Fast Car (Apr 11, 2003 - 01:27) | I think this song came out during a time when a bunch of good new songs were coming out. Sinead, The Church, Eddie Brickell. I bought them all including Tracy's. It added such a fresh new change to the music being played at the time.
Porcupine Tree - Trains (Apr 11, 2003 - 00:16) | I was just playing this in winamp when I saw it was being played on RP also

I didn't think this was a passable song to upload (silly me)....I forgot how well U2 is liked here :D

Johnny Cash - One (Apr 09, 2003 - 00:46) | first time hearing it and I am already going to rate it and comment on it before it even barely gets a chance to begin. Why? Cause it's Johnny Cash and I have not heard one remake of a song I hated by him yet. So there!
Led Zeppelin - In The Light (Apr 08, 2003 - 15:43) | when I was in High school I hated what was coming out on the radio (mostly big hair bands) so I listened to as much classic rock as I could and then there was Led Zeppelin. Especially this song (the entire double album) I listened to them all and swore there was no other band for me.
Oh man I forgot to thank you! This is a great song
David Bowie - Ashes to Ashes (Apr 08, 2003 - 14:01) | I know this may kill some people but Tears For Fears did this cover and I really like their version :D
Buster Poindexter - Hot Hot Hot (Apr 08, 2003 - 13:44) | hahahaha........I can't believe I heard this on here! Another 80's blast from the past. Boy we're getting them left and right lately
Chicane - Andromeda (Apr 08, 2003 - 02:26) | I think I was just hypnotized hope there was no bad subliminal messages in that
Coldplay - In My Place (Apr 08, 2003 - 02:19) | Well....I don't know why but I like a majority of the songs of their new album. I know all the songs sound like they are coming from the same band but they are coming from the same band.
The Alarm - Strength (Apr 08, 2003 - 01:05) | Yeah I like this 80's thing going on hear lately but at one point in this song I keep wanting to start singing " two hearts.....beat as one....." by U2
I remember liking their "rain in the summertime" more.
Porcupine Tree - Trains (Apr 08, 2003 - 00:36) | We need the album version uploaded. We are totally missing the definitive dreamy guitar and clap part.
Beta Band - Quiet (Apr 08, 2003 - 00:13) | I don't get it. I've heard this on here before but I swear only once and already I feel like I know it well. Thing is.. when I looked I wasn't familiar with the band at all. I think my ears hear something familiar but I can't place it.

I do. Among others I picked up their "Saturine Martial & Lunitic" album which consisted of b-sides and other songs that never made their albums. On it is a remake of a Robert Wyatt song called the "sea song" along with other cool songs. I also like the "Elemental" album.
Dada - Dizz Knee Land (Apr 07, 2003 - 22:39) | sheez....bring back a song with a little presidential history in it and it still works!!!!
Blue Man Group - Persona (Apr 07, 2003 - 13:21) | hmmmm......I seem to hear this alot now. It grows on me though. Not sure if by choice. It's not a bad song since I tend to listen to music with a kind of depressing mood to it. Kinda one of those songs that would get your attention depending on mood swing.

I remember when this came out and thought it was a cool mix with Tori. Thanks for playing it
Pork Tornado - Guabi Guabi (Apr 03, 2003 - 00:48) | it's got my vote. I checked out this cd and glad someone uploaded this song. you can play "All American" again too. that was the song that caught my attention :D
Rolling Stones - Heaven (Mar 28, 2003 - 06:23) | I never heard this tune from the Stones before until I started listening to RP.
I really like this song now. It's one of my favorites. Its too bad I never heard it before on any radio station.
Incubus - Aqueous Transmission (Mar 20, 2003 - 13:41) | wow!
I love the seasick description. I didn't even think it could make me seasick until I read that!
Very interesting though.
So interesting that I have come back today to up the rating a notch ;)
Jimmy Page & Robert Plant - Nobody's Fault But Mine (Mar 19, 2003 - 12:28) | :) Just had to stop and make a comment. Was thinking to myself how this sounded like an earlier version by somebody else then smiled cause I realized I recognized the voice. If anyone should remake your song why not do it yourself. Besides he always had great blues roots. It was a pleasure to hear it.

Oh man, I hear you as far as trying to get a radio station in that played something better than what you COULD get in. I lived in a remote area so I fell back on classic rock but I longed for non repititious forms of music I had never heard before. And Aparently still do and thats what brings me here.

The Beatles - Happiness Is A Warm Gun (Mar 16, 2003 - 15:18) | Well if this song is about heroin I'm not for that but I sympathize for the mistakes made by some people and I like this song (or respect it whatever the case may be). Has anyone heard Tori Amos's long rendition of this song?
Big Head Todd & The Monsters - Tangerine (Mar 10, 2003 - 12:47) | Well I have been listening on and off all day today and this is the only song today that strikes me enough to have to say something about it. What was I going to say...:???:
:p Oh yeah, I like many BHT&M songs. I also listened to as much Led Zeppelin as I could when I was younger and this was one of my favorites songs. I'm impressed and it fits them well.

Though I'm a sucker for GL, I thought this was a gutsy and passionate rendition. I think this speaks to the SONG, not necessarily the group performing it. Not sure I would have thought to cover "Sundown" via hip-hop, but it maintains its integrity here.
Kudos to Bill for exposing me (us) to yet ANOTHER group and day filled with songs I'd NEVER hear elsewhere.
Damn! I love RP!
Nicely Said.
But still.........

Solas - Clothes Of Sand (Mar 03, 2003 - 19:10) | Very brave!!!!!!
Not sure if anyone should be remaking Nick Drake songs and I rather like this song too.
but I guess if your going to do it then make it your own because there is no way to make it sound like he does.
Even though the AMG guide doesn't recongize this on the Solas page click here

It's A Beautiful Day - Hot Summer Day (Feb 26, 2003 - 08:55) | sounds like something from the psychedelic era. I love the sound of this and the diversity here on radio paradise!!
the music bounces me back and forth through genres kinda like this......
The Church - Destination (Feb 26, 2003 - 08:46) | I'm glad to hear some good comments. I loved this album and continued to follow listening to them for probably the next 8 years. Even went back with them on their earlier stuff. Thanks for playing one of the less radio populated songs.
Lucinda Williams - Righteously (Feb 26, 2003 - 08:33) | ok. this sounds nothing like "Down With That". She reminds me of...oh what's her name from "Hole"
Porcupine Tree - Lips Of Ashes (Feb 21, 2003 - 11:07) | Wow!! I guess I'm not the only one who hears CSN. I was just wishing the other day for someone to "Carry On" that great sound they had. :)

Now I have to hear this version by snoop dog. I agree with pimpbot5000. This must have been very popular on the net because I have seen it under the name of widespread panic but after introducing myself to them decided it couldn't be. I've seen it under the name of many sorts but still nobody had the right band. Thanks for the info.

Julie Miller - All My Tears (Feb 16, 2003 - 15:34) | Ok. I thought this sounding familiar. It's because it's on my Emmylou Harris "Wrecking Ball" cd. I guess Emmylou did a few backing vocals for Julie Miller in '93 and then did her own version with Jimmy Scott in '95. It was still a nice change. I really like Emmylou's voice though.
Wow! Thank You
Three songs later they played Emmylou's "Going Back To Harlem"
Fairport Convention - Come All Ye (Feb 15, 2003 - 18:31) | I knew this was Sandy Denny. I just had to come in and check. Might as well post a comment while I'm at it. Never heard this one but I definitely like it.
Hank Williams - Ramblin Man (Feb 14, 2003 - 10:42) | I never gave a song a rating of 10 before. I just didn't think with all the music out there one deserved a God like rating until now.
I don't think I have to explain my reasoning.
Porcupine Tree - Trains (Feb 13, 2003 - 18:34) | I discovered Porcupine Tree way back when the came out with "stars die". Great band and the more I hear this song the more it feels like a familier song. As if it came out before it came out.
