Not at all. It's small words and everything. And not a spanking, etiher. You misunderstand.
I think that the creative tension between artist and patron is worth thinking about. If you don't, that's cool. But this is something that commercial artists have to think about, and if they're not then they're not fully aware of their situation.
If this doesn't mean anything to you, then it's OK to move on, but you don't need to insult me, right?
Well thank you for allowing me to think differently than you, despite thinly veiling it as insult. But as you can see, I do not disagree with what you proposed; it was simply your delivery that I was commenting on. As far as insulting you, I think you have probably developed much thicker skin over the years than you let on.
The question, does an artist make music for his soul or his sustenance, makes for good discourse. I suspect that an artist can make music for his/her soul and be financially sovereign when s/he is able to reach others' souls. That may be through effort, perhaps the unsavory necessity of distilling his or her innate musical desires until the audience is reached and then slowly raise them to a higher level of acceptance, or perhaps by accident which, with the advent of mass communication technology is much more likely to happen than previous decades.
Thank you for allowing me to move on, it is almost God like of you to bestow this right. hummmm (see original comments)

Talking Heads - What A Day That Was (Nov 30, 2009 - 06:25) | Marcuse wrote: This "dialog" has prompted me to write my first comment ever. I like the range of music so much that I have spent way too much money on iTunes and I don't even bother to rate tunes. New discoveries are commonplace. I also have watched civility in the comment section decline markedly over the last year or two, and have wondered why so many people feel the need to bash artists they don't happen to like. And then get into Insult Olympics with other listeners who disagree with their opinions. It has turned the comment section into a smelly pit of machismo unfortunately, everybody puttin' up their dukes and slamming each other as best as they possibly can - the angrier the better. One of the great things about RP, which others have repeatedly stated is that there is a great range of musical styles. Odds are that we don't like everything we hear, right? So, uh, so what? Is it that compelling to get on the keyboard and send out that intense hate? Is it really that satisfying? Must be. Quite the playpen of insecurity and a sad need for validation. The contrast of this behavior with the wonderful musical offerings is stark. Oh, and Bill? Thanks for playing Talking Heads, David Byrne, and REM. All great bands/artists IMHO. (And comically predictable magnets for the wrath of the hate posters.) I brace for the onslaught while I climb back out of the pit.
Standing on a soap box of civility while spewing hate over your indignity of opinions stated in a manor you find offensive is still spewing hate. Your brand of bashing is far more offensive than anything I have read here.

Talking Heads - What A Day That Was (Oct 22, 2009 - 07:09) | dmax wrote:
What a fabulous way to deconstruct the concept of the artist. Question: Is the artist beholden to the patron, in that the patron must receive a product that they "like" as a consequence of their financial backing?
Or, since the artist is presumably a visionary, is it more appropriate that the product should be something that satisfies the artist's need to create - and patron be damned?
Robert Fripp has dealt with this question frequently in his diaries. When his audience takes him to task for not creating music that they want, he tells them that it's their time to move on.
However, there is an implied contract that - when I provide the artist with money - that I'll receive something substantive in return. And not "Metal Machine Music" when I thought I was getting something like "Transformer."
So then is the artist a conveyor belt of the same product that the patron demands? Then, are they not artists anymore,. but factory workers?
Therefore...is Bill (the artist) really obliged to manipulate his playlist (his art) to satisfy the patrons (financial supporters), or should he be left to his own devices and - if you don't want to support it any more you should just move on?
Wow, quite the spanking ....and it might just be effective if it did not sound as though you were merely writing to entertain yourself while showing off your astonishing intellect.......(read portentous)
