Stevie Ray Vaughan - Texas Flood (Jul 21, 2005 - 11:53) | Ok, flame me. I hate Stevie Ray Vaughan. A great guitarist no doubt but I find his style annoying. There's no soul in bending up to the same piercing note 200 times in a row. Listen to Hendrix - he was great because he knew just where to stop and do something else. His loose sense of rhythm was more sophisticated and his musical reasoning was much better. This is just pale imitation that often sounds painfully naive to me.
Fiona Apple - Red Red Red (Apr 28, 2005 - 11:02) | meh, I kind of liked it. It was interesting but not something I would expect many people would enjoy. The problem with this track is that it _almost_ grooves but just kind of grates in the end. The harmonies on the rest of the album are really dense, don't move in symmetry and don't make much sense unless you're into that sort of thing. I guess I am.
superbeef wrote:
I thought that was one of the better songs on the Album... I like her other albums, but I think the reason Sony hasn't released this one is because it kinda sucks.
Dave Matthews Band - Digging A Ditch (Mar 23, 2005 - 18:00) | This band is a complete waste of a perfectly good bassist and drummer.
There rest of these guys are kind of pathetic and it doesn't help that Dave's songs suck.
Oasis - Champagne Supernova (Mar 23, 2005 - 16:48) | eyelykearrpee wrote: How do you slowly walk faster than a cannonball?
do some 'shrooms.
Ryan Adams - Wonderwall (Mar 23, 2005 - 16:47) | This is so much better than Oasis. Takes out the "Wow I'm soooooo stoned!" childishness and presents the lyrics, which are pretty good, in a tolerable manner. I like this.
Led Zeppelin - The Battle of Evermore (Mar 17, 2005 - 11:37) | coding_to_music wrote: I see hobbits scurrying around the moors...
I agree. I love LZ but this is kind of a silly track. Well done however, if you're gonna do it, go all the way.
Pat Metheny - (Cross The) Heartland (Feb 02, 2004 - 11:31) | I have the same feeling about this as I do about Chuck Mangione band in the '70s. So much talent totally wasted. You have to try hard to make music like this sound so monumentally generic.
Ween - Hey There Fancypants (Jan 16, 2004 - 19:39) | I played my roomate "You $@&!ed Up" when his girlfriend broke up with him. That ruled.
The Cure - Close to Me (closer mix) (Jan 16, 2004 - 19:26) | I hate roomates. But this cut is great. Go kill your roomate.
PattonFever wrote:
totally. it makes me smile. sadly, my roomate has his annoying industrial music on so loudly that i have to hear that, too. hmph.

Lucinda Williams - Righteously (Sep 12, 2003 - 09:38) | This sucks so hard I can't even believe it. And I can't resist it either. What the hell, I give it a 7.
Dave Matthews Band - Tripping Billies (Sep 10, 2003 - 11:01) | It's the drummer that carries the group entirely. He should find a real band. That fiddle player is an embarrasing joke. So's the sax player.
camarkim wrote:You are obviously not a drummer.
Bruce Cockburn - The Whole Night Sky (Sep 10, 2003 - 10:44) | I said it once before and I'll say it again. This is hands-down my favorite Bruce Cockburn album. The track "Bermingham Shadows" blows me away every time.
Jethro Tull - With You There to Help Me (Sep 09, 2003 - 12:23) | tg3k wrote: Not necessarily my favorite Tull song, but it's always a pleasure to hear their stuff.
I've seen them a number of times in concert, but the Thick as a Brick tour took the cake. Ian Anderson said to the crowd "Here's a little song called Thick as a Brick". The band then proceeded to play the entire album, live, non-stop. The audience was breathless when it was all over.
That had to be the friggin' coolest thing ever. I would have killed to be there (and not be 2 years old at the time).
Jethro Tull - Bouree (Sep 08, 2003 - 10:20) | This is great. I was so turned off by the 'Tull of the 80's that I forgot how great they really were. I dusted of "Thick as a Brick" recently and remembered why it's one of my all-time favorite albums up there with "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway"...

Counting Crows - Round Here (Sep 05, 2003 - 07:27) | It tries to hard. That the problem.
skymunky wrote:Seems to me like a record committee was set the brief of arriving at an "indy" or "alternative" band sound, with a quirky yet soulful singer with a heartfelt voice, and all the 'right' ingredients, and they arrived at Counting Crows.
To me, they've just never sounded like "the real deal". Not sure why, all the 'right' ingredients are there, maybe that's just it. I always feel I'm being conned when I listen to them!
IMHO ofcourse. Some people love them.
Prince - When Doves Cry (Aug 22, 2003 - 09:42) | Prince rules. I got dragged to a Bare Naked Ladies show (not a fan of BNL), they covered this and it was the highlight - don't likt BNL but they had the taste to do a really good cover. Ani DiFranco does an ok one as well. This album is great. I wanna hear "Darling Nikki"!

Led Zeppelin - Kashmir (Aug 21, 2003 - 08:50) | I love this stuff. Too bad I got tired of it about six years back and sold all of my Zeppelin. I'm really missing it now.
This Mortal Coil - Song To The Siren (Aug 18, 2003 - 10:28) | At first, prejudice got the best of me: "This Mortal Coil"? "Song To The Siren"? *barf* After getting over that, I have to say: *barf*
Indigo Girls - Closer To Fine (Aug 18, 2003 - 10:19) | I tired quick of their "sound" early on, later as their sound changed I realized it wasn't getting better. Still, this is a great track. Just smart enough to be intresting but not quite "Four years on an English degree and all I got was this crappy band"-grade. It's close however.
Eva Cassidy - Fields of Gold (Aug 08, 2003 - 14:13) | I find this version much more effective than the original. I think it's also more effective when you're familiar with her other work. Also, realize that this recording is not NEARLY as produced as Stings albums so - the "guitar sound sucks" doesnt cut it for criticism. This is a live recording.
Peter Tosh - Johnny B. Goode (Jul 29, 2003 - 13:11) | I never really liked reggae. This included. Can't we hear the real thing? There's nothing intresting about this.
Luka Bloom - Exploring The Blue (Jul 29, 2003 - 12:52) | Originally Posted by tg3k:

Garbage - #1 Crush (Jul 02, 2003 - 10:56) | Chick has got some serious dependency issues. :)
This song is great.
Bob Dylan - Visions of Johanna (Jun 30, 2003 - 14:11) | Like Waits, his voice is an acquired taste. But really, I think that when one hates Dylan it's because everyone's always saying that he's SUCH a genius. Well, I think he's one of the most powerful soungwrites ever, but I also understand that theres no way to shove his music down someone elses throat - they'll just resent it. If you ever have a chance to find him yourself, I highly encourage it.
Bruce Cockburn - Tried & Tested (Jun 30, 2003 - 13:53) | I like Bruce but this album is a little weak. Still decent however. Also, you have to be a bit of a left-winger (like me) in order to not go nuts when you hear the multitude of statements he makes that are substantially naive. You also have to understand that much of his pondering is quazi-Christan and spiritual in nature rather than political. Not being even quazi-Christian I still appreciate the sediment of his music.
Johnny Cash - Hurt (Jun 27, 2003 - 12:29) | Anything NIN described as "moving piece of art"... I don't even know where to start. This is so much more effective than Trent's fake-O pained whining. He's a child compared to Cash. You're sick.

Steve Earle - Copperhead Road (Jun 27, 2003 - 12:09) | Sorry, for this song is synonymous with the red-neck classic rock radio stations in Southwest Virginia where I grew up. Barf.

Merrie Amsterburg - Walking On The Moon (Jun 19, 2003 - 10:15) | I kind of like this cover. I've no idea why the reception is so harsh. I like hearing something other than the back-to-back Calexico played here on Calexicoparadise.

"Ruby In Paradise" is one of my favorites from Victor Nunez. I don't think he has directed anything better since - but "Ulyees Gold" was ok.
Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds - Tripping Billies (Jun 06, 2003 - 09:04) | Nice segway from the Inda Eaton but Dave is just plain bad. Just when I was digging the Eaton it seamlessly slid into this crap. I feel violated.
And I agree, Tim us just painful. He practiced his scales so much he forgot to become a musician.
Joan Osborne - I'll Be There (Jun 06, 2003 - 07:22) | Some harsh comments here. I really like her voice - sounds like there are a number of things to like about her more recent work. I think I pick up her last album...
:)
Dave Matthews Band - Ants Marching (Jun 05, 2003 - 08:45) | These guys failed to get any better. Totally carried by the drummer. That fiddle player is embarrasing. So's the sax. So's Dave.

Joe Satriani - Oriental Melody (Jun 05, 2003 - 07:58) | Faith No More is one of my favorites. To bad they split up a few years back. With the exception of their last album they just got better and better as they went. To bad the quality was inversely proportional to marketability.

:)
Bonnie Raitt - I Feel The Same (Jun 05, 2003 - 07:46) | This is really generic. Plus I've aquired a dislike for artists that write about nothing but anger and discontent. This is one if them. She can go away.

The Hooters - All You Zombies (Jun 04, 2003 - 12:15) | Wow. This would really be saying something if Moses and Noah actually existed. And if the nation of Israel were really something to look up to.
:)
Jethro Tull - Reasons For Waiting (Jun 04, 2003 - 11:58) | Tull at their best. Ian's efforts these days are seriously lacking - I wish he'd just stop. Oh well, '74s "Thick as a Brick" is still one of my favorite albums of all-time. Right after "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway". Yummy.
Portishead - Roads (May 15, 2003 - 11:18) | It's rainy and crappy here in PA (as always). This is perfect. I love this album.

King Crimson - Walking On Air (May 12, 2003 - 10:51) | Wow, I own this album somewhere but I haven't listened to it in years. Looks like I'll have to find it. If it hasn't disappeared mysteriously - freekin' roommates.

Bob Dylan - Visions of Johanna (Apr 30, 2003 - 09:56) | This is some of Dylan's finest. I truly despise individuals that can't get past his voice. Few, if any, songwriters have attained his level of artistry.

Dave Matthews Band - Bartender (Apr 30, 2003 - 08:17) | Oh boy. This band is a wasted effort. Nothing interesting. Pretentious lyrics with no decent musical backing. The drummer carries this group but Dave runs around like he thinks he's some kind of talent. Go soak your head man. This sucks.
Eva Cassidy - Fields of Gold (Apr 28, 2003 - 13:33) | Eva is one of the most amazing singers I've ever heard. I wish she were still around *sniffle*. The few recordings she left are priceless.
Tori Amos - Cornflake Girl (Apr 25, 2003 - 08:04) | Nice to hear something off of "Under the Pink". Most of that album is a lot more inspired than the stuff coming from her today. I guess she's a lot like Don Henley in that her music was more effective when the memories of her life totally sucking where fresh. Sure, it's a bitter, angry album but that's what it's all about. I love Don Henley's early solo stuff as well...
:)
T Bone Burnett - River of Love (Apr 17, 2003 - 12:39) | I never really liked his producing all that much and this is hardly what I would call stellar. I think Sam would have been much better off with a better producer. But since they're married I don't see that she has much choice.
:)
Leonard Cohen - Boogie Street (Apr 15, 2003 - 17:04) | Man, Lenard Cohen is all kinds of cool. One of the most depressing but satisfying songwriters ever.

The Cure - Close to Me (closer mix) (Apr 15, 2003 - 16:42) | I think Cure has been overlooked by a lot of people because of the whole "you listen to the Cure" goth stereotype thing. (I hate goths, I like Cure).
Porcupine Tree - Collapse The Light Into Earth (Apr 15, 2003 - 15:38) | Guess I'm a naysayer. I like this CD. I don't like this track. In fact, while much of the disc is great, the remainder is just a little callow and generally sucky.
;)
Squirrel Nut Zippers - Hell (Apr 11, 2003 - 11:26) | This rules. You cannot hate a song with the line: "This is a place where eternally / fire is applied to their body."
(pimp)
Massive Attack - Everywhen (Apr 09, 2003 - 15:57) | This is great programming music. Orb is my fav for that however. This guy's voice gets on my nerves - he needs to shut up. Good anyway.
:)
Willie Nelson - Blue Skies (Apr 09, 2003 - 15:21) | That was truly wonderful. I recently picked up a CD with the late Eva Cassity singing this Irving Berlin classic. That is an inspiration as well.
Lucinda Williams - Ventura (Apr 08, 2003 - 09:24) | "Lean over the toilet bowl and throw up my confession." Something about her voice saying "toilet bowl" is just disgusting.
Junior Brown - Surf Medley (Apr 08, 2003 - 09:21) | Most things sound like a good idea until you do it: The other day I though it would be a good idea to listen to some tracks off my old (1980s) Anthrax albums. No, not a good idea.
This is the opposite. I thought "Yuck" surf-guitar. But no - surf guitar is a much better idea in actuality than it is in concept. That's a rarity. (pimp)
John Mayer - 3x5 (Apr 07, 2003 - 06:51) | This is not good. Completely without flavor.
Dixie Chicks - Sin Wagon (Apr 04, 2003 - 14:50) | This rules. If you can heap kudos on much of the talentless electro-garbage that gets played here you can appreciate some good performers before going "blech" because they're "chicks" or because it's country. I find thoughtlessness more prevalent in pseudo-intellectual forums like this than I do anywhere else.

Widespread Panic - Traveling Light (Apr 02, 2003 - 11:27) | A great album by WP from ~1988. Over the last 10 years they've been more and more under the influence of the god of suck.
The Moody Blues - Lovely To See You (Apr 01, 2003 - 11:09) | I own a bunch of MB albums and I haven't listened to them in a while (years). I think I'll break them out. The music of their early years was quite dark even when their tunes were light and happy sounding - a creepy combination.
Dave Matthews Band - Grey Street (Mar 28, 2003 - 10:39) | I don't dig. There's way too much youthful pretense in Dave for someone in his 30s. His writing feels self-congratulatory to me. Meh, the only members of the band that are worth anything are the drummer and bassist. The rest are a joke - including Dave.
Fiona Apple - Paper Bag (Mar 28, 2003 - 10:17) | For one so young she's quite a talent. I hope it scales with time and she sticks around. I'd hate to see her disappear - as is often the case with artists that start their career as jailbait (She was 16 when Tidal was released in '96).
Philip Glass - Opening (Mar 28, 2003 - 07:30) | Quite frankly I find most of Glass' music to be amature. There is nothing in this that strikes me as profound or lovely. He never was or will be the composer Steve Reich is when it comes to this repetitive or "minimalist" genre. But then, Reich isn't nearly as impressed with himself as Glass is.

The Beatles - A Day In The Life (Mar 20, 2003 - 14:06) | Anyone that doesnt think that the Beatles are almost single-handedly responsible for the modern "recording artist" is lost.
Alanis Morissette - Baba (Mar 20, 2003 - 13:12) | Wow I like this. I really can't understand why so much schlock can be completely overlooked while this get brutally flamed. Oh well, a flamer's motives should always be suspect.

Ani Difranco - 32 Flavors (Mar 10, 2003 - 10:56) | I really like Ani but I can't help thinking that she must be a sociopath. Having worked in the mental health field for a while, I get that sociopath vibe from her music.

Sheryl Crow - Safe And Sound (Mar 05, 2003 - 07:31) | Good stuff. I like Sheryl a lot. I'm glad my smelly hippie acquaintances don't. Then I'd know something was wrong with her. :)
Tori Amos - Past The Mission (Mar 03, 2003 - 07:10) | This was the last decent Tori album. 1994. She hasn't made anything truly convincing since. Working on 10 years old. I was a college freshman. How depressing.
Thievery Corporation - Indra (Mar 01, 2003 - 18:41) | This sounds right out of the soundtrack for Atom Egoyan's excellent film "Exotica". That said: this song bites.
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Simple Man (Mar 01, 2003 - 18:28) | This song give me the chills on many levels. I like it, but having growing up with "the simple" mentality (whatever that means) in southwest Virginia all I can say is that it all too often results in arrogant stupidity. But not always.
The Orb - Toxygene (Feb 04, 2003 - 09:19) | love me some orb. this is the most "dancy" track on the album. most of it is much better than this.
Dave Matthews Band - Seek Up (Feb 04, 2003 - 08:59) | Wow, I usually dislike Dave. I think it's funny that everyone hates this but now I don't for once. The drummer carries this group when they don't suck. That fiddle player is a joke however. He sure plays those three notes like he means it - which only makes it kind of embarrassing.

Tim Finn - Shiver (Jan 10, 2003 - 10:48) | Something almost David Bowie about this... :)
Soundgarden - Spoonman (Jan 08, 2003 - 12:09) | This rules. Cornell back in the day ('88-92) could flatten a room with his voice. He started blowing it by the time this was recorded (93). Badmotorfinger has some vocals on it that are not even human - I love that stuff.
Rush - The Enemy Within (Jan 08, 2003 - 11:57) | Not the best Rush out there but, hey!
If you want to hear some REALLY embarrasing stuff just listen to Rush's first album. Six words: "By-Tor and the snow dog"!
De-Phazz - Lullaby (Jan 08, 2003 - 11:40) | Works for me as well. As much as I love old stuff as well, this is why I like RP. Oh! Bjork! Gotta go....
Joni Mitchell - River (Dec 23, 2002 - 11:49) | Joni is one of the best. This alum (Blue) minus one or two tracks is wonderful.

Delerium - Myth (Dec 23, 2002 - 10:46) | Enigma did this 13 years ago. It was cool back then.... :???:
Clinic - Harmony (Dec 12, 2002 - 07:57) | I'm surprised that no one has posted that this sounds EXACTLY like Radiohead only not nearly as good. Oh well.

Pearl Jam - You Are (Dec 11, 2002 - 09:30) | Heh, bad morning I guess. I had an ex-girlfiend that worshipped them. Enough said.

I'm a pretty big fan of PJ myself, but have to say their first three albums all sounded roughly the same--in fact, that's what I liked about them--their consistency.
And this song, while pretty cool and nice to hear, is not much of a departure from what they were doing a decade ago--and that's part of what I like about it, too.
Cake - Long Line Of Cars (Dec 08, 2002 - 22:23) | It sucks. I know what they're saying but I still have to drive to work. This song rules but I'm the problem. At least I don't drive an SUV...

Joan Osborne - St. Teresa (Dec 08, 2002 - 21:49) | One of those artists that you just like more and more. She's gone on to "Joan Rules!" status for me...

Jethro Tull - With You There to Help Me (Dec 08, 2002 - 21:46) | This is good. 'Tull was great back in the day (but don't even get me started on Catfish Rising). "Thick as a Brick" remains one of my all-time favorite albums along side "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway".

Bob Dylan - All Along the Watchtower (Dec 08, 2002 - 21:03) | I'm sorry, it's time the old man hung up his hat. He's not getting any better. "Time out of mind" was a good album but a frind of mine put it best when I was complaining that Bob's music and performances just suck these days. He said that Dylan has lost his sense of humor. Too true - he has - sadly. He should make like M*A*S*H and stop while he's still one of the all-time greatest.

Shawn Mullins - Shimmer (acoustic) (Nov 25, 2002 - 09:00) | Shawn Mullins is total garbage. I can tell what he's going for but he could only be an embarrassing attempt to emulate his mentors. This is truly a callow, pathetic and embarrassing attempt to evoke any sort of real feeling. please stop.

Rubyhorse - Evergreen (Nov 19, 2002 - 16:27) | Wow, we should all just stop listening to anything new and resort to the albums we already own. They are the only things that could possibly be any good. Play all oldies! I only like it if I've heard it before! Give me the local Clearchannel classic rock station any time!
But you're right. This song sucks.

I wonder what songs will be burned into my 2003?
Still hanging at #24 on the "Top New Tracks" playlist.
Why Bill? Why?
Thousands of songs to choose from, yet I get to listen to this one almost daily. Music is timeless, but the new-loaded playlists are not.
The Top New Tracks list is nothing more than the music drug packaged in its most efficient form. Yet another profit driven creation of the industry.
Stop pushing, Bill! (please :( )

Pearl Jam - You Are (Nov 16, 2002 - 08:18) | I really have a problem with U2 fans. Never was there a more mediocre group in the history of rock. They are the dubbya bush of music. Pearl Jam, while not a favorite group of mine, is about 1000 times more interesting than U2 even has the collective capacity for. However U2 fans tend to be the most rabid around. At the very least Pearl Jams tries push their own creative limits - and they are often blasted for it. U2 produces schlock that is adored no matter what. Sometimes I wonder if U2 fans are even listening...
oh, and this is great song. Good to hear them again!
