Gorillaz - On Melancholy Hill
(Apr 08, 2011 - 10:35)
 anisbet wrote:
one the best albums from 2010

Definitely one of my favourite albums.
And perhaps the best from the Gorillaz.
I like that it can take many listens to form an opinion on their tunes.
Great live show too!

Coldplay - Don't Panic
(Jan 20, 2011 - 10:40)
I was really into this album when it first came out.
But Coldplay seemed to head in a direction that no longer spoke to me.
I never play their music anymore,
But I don't mind hearing the occasional track from this album.

Mavis Staples - Wrote A Song For Everyone
(Jan 16, 2011 - 11:55)
 Dancing_banana wrote:
Love this - sounds like The Weight

Nice song... maybe a little too much like The Weight.

Pink Floyd - Learning to Fly
(Jan 03, 2011 - 09:08)
I've always been a Floyd fan (or so it seems)
But I rarely listen to anything after The Final Cut.
It just sounds a little watered down without Waters... get it?  wink wink...
Not that I think this is bad... just not great.
And I do listen to Waters solo stuff... which I like... but still not as much as the Floyd days.

Radiohead - High and Dry
(Dec 30, 2010 - 17:59)
 horstman wrote:

Most people? You've been in touch with most people? Sorry but I have to disagree, The Bends was by far the best album this band has done. Everything thereafter was downhill in comparison.

Kind of like U2 and the Joshua Tree.

I love Radiohead; and that includes everything from album one to their last release.
And I gotta say that they keep getting better and more interesting with time.
Though I will admit that The Bends offers some of their most radio friendly music.
But "radio friendly" does not always equal "best".

Bob Dylan - Love Minus Zero/No Limit
(Dec 22, 2010 - 09:41)

This song is good for the ears...

Although I agree...
That constantly use description is wearing me out!

Flaming Lips - Turn It On
(Aug 06, 2010 - 10:26)
YAY!

Love this album!

Takes me back to my school days.

Turn it on!  And turn it up!

Dire Straits - Water Of Love
(Aug 05, 2010 - 14:34)
A real J.J. Cale feel to this.
Which is ok in my books.

Broken Bells - Your Head Is On Fire
(Aug 05, 2010 - 14:30)
I have been listening to this album a lot lately.
Really good stuff!

Eurythmics - Here Comes the Rain Again (acoustic)
(Aug 04, 2010 - 12:32)
I love the original version so much!
This really doesn't live up to it.

The Black Keys - Tighten Up
(Aug 04, 2010 - 11:45)

Great stuff!

Gonna see these guys tonight.

R.L. Burnside - Glory Be
(Aug 04, 2010 - 11:31)
This is such a cool album.
Lot's of fun stuff on that disc.
I realize it's essentially all remixes, and released after his death,
But it's terrific and totally worth spending the money on.

Pete Yorn - Strange Condition
(Aug 04, 2010 - 10:48)

I really enjoyed this album when it first came out.
Saw him live as well... good show.
It's been a while... I think I should give that disc another spin.

Screaming Trees - More or Less
(Jul 29, 2010 - 17:42)

Never really paid attention to the Screaming Trees before.
Sounds alright.
Parts of this song remind me of Neil Young's Heart of Gold... is it my imagination?

Beck - Golden Age
(Jul 29, 2010 - 12:35)
 stickers11 wrote:
Fair to say Beck is a genius?

It is completely fair to say that.

He keeps putting out amazing music.

Gorillaz - On Melancholy Hill
(Jul 29, 2010 - 09:50)

Plastic Beach is one of my favourite albums of the year.
So creative, and keeps sounding great with frequent listening.
I guess, it's not for everyone... but what do I care, as long as I like it!

Radiohead - Black Star
(Jul 28, 2010 - 16:10)
 miahfost wrote:
Why don't they make music like this anymore? Thom Yorke has to be so damn precious and obscure these days, its really tiresome.

Sheesh!
I actually think their latest record is fantastic.
I can't stop listening to it.

Beck - Guess I'm Doing Fine
(Jul 28, 2010 - 13:32)
Haunting and wonderful.
Beck is one of the best in music today.

Flaming Lips - What Is the Light?
(Jul 27, 2010 - 14:33)
Man I love this album!
Just saw the FLips for the 4th time a couple weeks ago.
Such a fun band.

The Soft Bulletin is definitely one of my favourite albums of all time.

John Prine - Please Don't Bury Me
(Jul 27, 2010 - 13:55)

Love it!
This song has great memories attached to it for me.

The Black Keys - I'm Not The One
(Jul 27, 2010 - 07:53)
I've got my tickets to see these guys.
Lookin' forward to it!

Broken Bells - Citizen
(Jul 24, 2010 - 20:32)
 Bocephus wrote:
Not a bad song on this album. Great collaboration that brings out the best in both.

Totally agree.
One of the better albums to come out this year.
Even though this isn't one of the strongest songs on the record, it's still very good.

Coldplay - Shiver
(Jul 24, 2010 - 20:23)
 rp1125 wrote:
honestly, is there anyone out there that can stand this band?

There was actually a time that I liked this album (when it first came out).
My then girlfriend and I would listen to it a lot.
But eventually I realized that these guys were going nowhere fast, and the charm was gone.

Eddie Vedder - Society

I thought the movie was great until I found out how much of it was lies to make a more interesting story. Thankfully the music is truthful.

I think you are making too much out of that.

I've read the book "Into the Wild".
It gives more of the story than a movie can,
And yes, the movie adjusts the story a little.
But movies almost always have to do that in order to tell the story in a short period of time.

The film still does the real life story justice.

Radiohead - High and Dry
(Jul 24, 2010 - 16:58)
I am so thankful for Radiohead!

Ween - Transdermal Celebration
(Jul 24, 2010 - 16:27)
Wow... never heard this Ween track before.
I like it!

Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros - Get Down Moses
(Jul 24, 2010 - 12:56)
Such a cool song.
I wonder if he rest of that album is as good?

Grateful Dead - Not Fade Away / Goin' Down the Road Feeling Bad
(Jul 23, 2010 - 13:03)
This track(s) was always one of my favourite GD recordings.
Love it!

Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter
(Jul 16, 2010 - 12:32)
It still amazes me just how perfect this song is.
This is rock'n roll at it's best.

Radiohead - Subterranean Homesick Alien
(Jul 15, 2010 - 14:15)
Thank you Radiohead for your commitment to awesomeness!

Crowded House - When You Come
(Jul 12, 2010 - 15:23)
The music ain't bad.
But this has to be some of the worst lyrics I have ever heard.
Yikes!

I'll be nice and give it a 5

Pink Floyd - Sheep
(Apr 13, 2010 - 12:29)
Always been one of my favourite Floyd tunes.

And I think it's some of the best guitar work Gilmour has done.
It's loose and improvised sounding.

Super cool!

I like Beck's music despite the fact that he's a scientologist.  Religious tolerance is all fine and good, but the scientology organization has caused a lot of people a lot of pain and hardship.  Being a member doesn't mean you enjoy inflicting this on others (hell, it doesn't even mean you are involved in the despicable things that go on).  However, one of the requirements of being in scientology is giving the organization lots and lots of money, which allows them to continue their ways.

I don't want to turn this board into a political or religious flame war, so I won't cite sources.  Wikipedia and the first page of Google results have information for those that want to know more.

You could be describing just about any religion on the planet!
Regardless... Beck is awesome... and his recent music is his best ever.

And I can live with the fact that he is a Scientologist... no matter how silly it is.

Pink Floyd - Obscured by Clouds
(Feb 05, 2010 - 12:24)
This album deserves more attention than it gets!

Great stuff!

Metric - Satellite Mind
(Feb 05, 2010 - 12:11)
Very cool song.
This whole album gets pretty regular play on my iPod.

Yay Canada!

:)

Til Tuesday - Voices Carry
(Jan 27, 2010 - 15:14)
I liked this when I was young.
It still holds some nostalgic goodness for me.

Pink Floyd - Pigs (Three Different Ones)

Yikes.

Coldplay - Warning Sign
(Jan 26, 2010 - 10:19)
This goes back to when I still liked Coldplay.

But now I just can't seem to care for them.

Grateful Dead - Bertha
(Jan 26, 2010 - 09:34)
Oh Yeah!

{#Dancingbanana}

Neville Brothers - Fire On The Mountain
(Jan 26, 2010 - 09:31)
Seems strange when not sung by Jerry.

It's ok, not great though.

Spoon - Written In Reverse
(Jan 25, 2010 - 16:15)
I'm diggin' it!

The Flaming Lips - Silver Trembling Hands
(Jan 25, 2010 - 16:13)
Dare to be different!

I'm still loving this song.

People play Brown Sugar at weddings?
That's fu**ed up!
At any rate... Gimme Shelter rocks the universe!

Radiohead - All I Need
(Jan 25, 2010 - 12:27)
Very good song.

I freakin' love this album!

It challenges for my fave Radiohead record.

It gets better with every listen.

Flaming Lips - What Is the Light?
(Jan 18, 2010 - 14:03)
One of my favourite albums (and the best the Lips have released)

Very nice song choice.

Interpol - Untitled
(Jan 16, 2010 - 13:46)
Totally dig this song... and the album.

Good stuff.

Cracker - Loser
(Jan 12, 2010 - 13:33)
It's ok... but a little uninspired.

J.J. Cale - Travelin' Light
(Jan 12, 2010 - 12:10)
Really like this tune a lot.

Good album... gotta love J.J. Cale!

Grateful Dead - Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo
(Jan 12, 2010 - 06:49)
This was always one of my favourites by the Dead.

The Cult - She Sells Sanctuary
(Jan 11, 2010 - 20:39)
So freakin' cool!

Reminds me of sitting on the school bus listening to my walkman.

Radiohead - There There
(Jan 11, 2010 - 18:23)
I had this at a 9...
But I think I was wrong... it needs to be a 10!

Rolling Stones - Paint It Black
(Jan 11, 2010 - 15:19)
Perhaps I've heard this song so much that it is losing some luster.
But it's still worth a 10.

It also takes me back to Tour of Duty... great show (well, for a little while anyway).

March of the Mannequins - Tender Murderer

wow... the first Beck album you ever heard?!
That's surprising.  But you sure picked a good one to start with.
This whole disc gets regular play in my headphones.

You have a lot more awesomeness to discover in the world of Beck!

Grateful Dead - Franklin's Tower
(Jan 08, 2010 - 13:08)
Always been one of my favourites from the Dead!

Pearl Jam - Nothing As It Seems
(Jan 08, 2010 - 11:45)
Love this song!

Definitely one of my favourite PJ tunes.

The Doors - Peace Frog/Blue Sunday
(Jan 08, 2010 - 11:30)
Definitely one of my favourite Doors songs.

Fleet Foxes - Blue Ridge Mountains

Goldfrapp - Strict Machine

I totally dig this tune.

Sounds great on my headphones.

Couple of even better songs on that album though.

Radiohead - Reckoner

aww, c'mon! It's Radiohead, therefor it's ok, but there's nothing that special about it.

Actually, I think it is a very special song.
These guys have some serious creativity.
This song is great... this album is one of the best to come out in the past 10 years.

Please do.  I used to have this album and that was one of my favorite tracks.

I would also like to hear the Jane's Addiction version of Ripple from this album.
It was a real highlight from that record (or cassette in my case).

Ray Charles - Night Time is the Right Time
(Jan 07, 2010 - 14:24)
I think the Cosby Show has forever tainted my appreciation for this song.

My Morning Jacket - The Way that He Sings

The fact that James' voice is a little flat is one of the reasons I like it so much.

When he performed that Goin' to Acapulco tune in the Bob Dylan movie, it gave me goosebumps!

Haven't heard this in a long time!

It takes me back.

Cool stuff.

Ratatat - Wildcat
(Dec 23, 2009 - 13:03)
I kinda like the tune.
I once tried listening to the whole album... but it got tedious.
But this one track, once in a while, is alright.
Good enough for a 6... for now.

Deodato - Also Sprach Zarathustra
(Dec 22, 2009 - 13:28)
This is so awesome!
I'm feeling all nostalgic!

I had a record when I was a kid called Star Wars.
But it was all sorts of sci-fi tv and movie theme songs - jazzy/disco versions.
I listened to it soooo much!
This song was on it, along with versions of Six Million Dollar Man, Star Wars, Star Trek, Superman etc.

Love it!

AC/DC - You Shook Me All Night Long
(Dec 18, 2009 - 13:36)
I've always loved AC/DC
I prefer the Bon Scott era though.

Anyone else think that being the drummer for AC/DC must be a really boring job?

I enjoy the Guess Who... but you gotta admit, that is one dorky looking album cover!

Jerry Garcia & David Grisman - The Thrill is Gone
(Dec 17, 2009 - 07:02)
The Garcia and Grisman album that this song came from was one of my favourites back in university.
Everyone that I played it for became an instant fan.

I have never met anyone in "real life" that didn't like it.

I guess the interweb is a whole different story.

U2 - Where the Streets Have No Name
(Dec 16, 2009 - 10:33)
Some of the comments in here baffle me!

This song, and many others from the early U2 albums are fantastic.

I like stylish notes played by Gilmour, but guitar doesn't always have to be the same.
Edge did some cool stuff and really perfected that sound that has become so identifiable with U2.
Bono's voice has always been powerful, while rough and strained sounding.
He may not have the voice of his younger self, but it was a great part of the band.
Too bad they have run out of great song ideas.

Fleet Foxes - Blue Ridge Mountains
(Dec 15, 2009 - 10:56)
I keep thinking of My Morning Jacket when I hear these guys.

Which isn't a bad thing...

Beck - Youthless
(Dec 15, 2009 - 10:38)
Great tune!
Awesome album!

Like a fine wine, Beck gets better with age!

Neil Young - Words (Between The Lines Of Age)

Great song.
Never really paid close attention to Fleetwood Mac until recently.
My girlfriend is crazy about them and their solo projects, and will travel great distance to see them live.
I got to see them play in Toronto recently... very good show.

Radiohead - Reckoner

Fleet Foxes - Mykonos
(Nov 21, 2009 - 20:23)
I don't know much by these guys.
But every time one of their songs come on, I think I'm hearing My Morning Jacket.
Considering I like MMJ, it might be a good thing...

Doves - Compulsion
(Nov 21, 2009 - 19:35)
I listened to their earlier stuff quite a bit.
First time hearing this song... kinda surprised it's Doves.
I like it though... gonna check out the rest of this album.

I feel kind of bad saying so, but I can't help it.
Perhaps it's just a matter of what your used to?

John Coltrane - Naima

I like the jump you just did from Pink Floyd's Shine On... saxophone ending into this.

Alabama 3 - Woke Up This Morning

This song is pure coolness!

MC 900 FT Jesus - The City Sleeps

The more I hear this, the more I like it.
Cool groove.

J.J. Cale - Lies

One of my favourite albums!
Love this song.
Groovy!

Bedouin Soundclash - When The Night Feels My Song
(Nov 11, 2009 - 14:01)
The first couple times I heard it, I thought it was fun.
But after a thousand times hearing it in various media, I want it to go away forever.
Sure, it's a cute song, but there isn't enough substance to make it last.
This song needs to be buried in a deep hole in the ground.

I'll be nice, and give it a 4.

Pink Floyd - Hey You
(Nov 11, 2009 - 13:40)
I'm a Floyd fan.
I love this track.
I love this album.

It may not be the best record the band came out with.
But I think it is arguably the best produced album of all time.
It has so many layers and textures that flow seamlessly from one song to the next.
It's a masterwork!

Dire Straits - The Man's Too Strong
(Nov 11, 2009 - 11:14)
This is such a fantastic song.
One of the greatest albums of all time!

Neil Young - Throw Your Hatred Down
(Nov 11, 2009 - 09:22)
I think I might have to bump my rating from an 8 to a 9.
This is a great rock tune.
It ranks up there with his Crazy Horse days.

Neil Young + Pearl Jam = awesome!

Moby - Natural Blues
(Nov 11, 2009 - 09:16)
I love this style of Moby.
I don't pay much attention to the "techno" stuff.
But this, and his other more chilled out tunes, are terrific.

David Bowie - Starman
(Nov 10, 2009 - 13:42)
Hell Yeah!

Beck - Earthquake Weather
(Nov 09, 2009 - 11:17)
Love it!

How does Beck manage to continually produce such awesome music?
He keeps sounding better with every record.

Coldplay - Green Eyes

I've been a fan of their past albums.
This is sounding good to me.

J.J. Cale - After Midnight
(Nov 09, 2009 - 08:30)
J.J. Cale!
One of my all time faves!

Big Audio Dynamite - The Bottom Line
(Nov 08, 2009 - 11:32)
I remember being a big fan of this album back in the day.
This song is alright, but there are other, much better, songs on the record.

Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms

This song is a perfect 10.

The Tragically Hip - Nautical Disaster
(Nov 07, 2009 - 10:16)
Awesomeness!

Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - Killing The Blues
(Nov 06, 2009 - 10:01)
I really like this song.
I'm a big fan of the album.
Nothing earth shattering about it.
But it's just so easy on the ears.

Radiohead - Nude
(Nov 05, 2009 - 12:47)
This song is outstanding.
In Rainbows is the best album I have heard in the last few years.
Fantastic from start to finish.

Beck - Go It Alone

The Band - The Weight (With The Staples)
(Nov 02, 2009 - 12:30)
The deserves an 11

The song is absolute greatness to begin with.
But this version with the Staples gives me shivers of delight every time I hear it.
I can't imagine why anyone wouldn't love it.
It's one of the best things I have ever heard!

Midnight Oil - Beds Are Burning
(Nov 02, 2009 - 10:42)
His voice may grate a bit during the verse,
But it's perfect once the chorus kicks in.

I don't know if it's nostalgia or not... but I have to give this song an 8.

Grateful Dead - New Speedway Boogie
(Nov 02, 2009 - 10:34)
Oh yeah!
Love this song!

Wolfsheim - Approaching Lightspeed
(Nov 02, 2009 - 10:00)
There isn't much about this song that is interesting.
Bland.

Steve Earle - Copperhead Road
(Nov 01, 2009 - 10:29)
I saw Steve Earle about 10 years ago in a little pub in Galway, Ireland.
It was a rather "unplugged" set, spending much of the night being backed up by an Irish folk band.
Very cool experience.

My Morning Jacket - The Way that He Sings

One word of advice...

If you see them live... bring earplugs.
They play loud!

Coldplay - Clocks
(Oct 30, 2009 - 11:59)
I once liked these guys (first and second album... third was crap).
But their entertainment value is not long lasting.
I have become bored by them.
And, to me, a good band is one that stands the test of time.

Bob Dylan - Black Diamond Bay
(Oct 30, 2009 - 11:46)
One of my all time favourite albums!
Pure GOLD!

Cardigans - Erase-Rewind
(Oct 28, 2009 - 17:55)
This is my first time hearing this song,
and I think it's pretty cool.

I had never paid attention to The Cardigans,
but for some reason I picked up their last record "Super Extra Gravity" a few years back.
(I must have read a positive review somewhere)

I gotta say, it's one of the more enjoyable albums I have purchased in recent years.
Nothing ground-breaking about it.  It's just good solid rock'n roll.

Perhaps I should investigate some of their other material.

The Who - Baba O'Riley
(Oct 28, 2009 - 17:07)
Awesome? - yes
Overplayed? - yes
Am I ok with that? - yes

Pearl Jam - Just Breathe
(Oct 28, 2009 - 13:15)
One of the best songs off the new record.
While the whole album may only rate a 6.5/10 for me,
This song is easily an 8.

Funny how this one, and "The End" (also from Backspacer) are two of my faves from the disc,
Yet they both sound like Vedder solo material from "Into the Wild".

The Good, The Bad & The Queen - Green Fields
(Oct 28, 2009 - 11:56)
I'm a fan of this album.
There's nothing mind-blowing about it.
But I find the sounds easy to hang out with.
It's somehow comforting.

Interpol - Narc
(Oct 28, 2009 - 09:09)
I really enjoy this band.
Pretty simple, yet catchy tunes.
And I like the singers voice.
This is a good album.

I came across Muse in Ireland about 10 years ago right with their debut album "Showbiz", and have been listening to them ever since. It's a love-hate relationship; the music is infectious the lyrics are horrendous —but that's what makes pop music so irresistible sometimes. As much as I enjoy listening to them, there is this un-relatability to their music that keeps them just outside one of my hearts favorites. This is one of their best albums in my opinion; its fun, catchy and the lead singer finally got the chance to unleash some of his more "symphonic" creations.

I agree with you.
They do have some catchy pop-rock tunes.
But their lyrics are some of the worst I have ever heard.
I happened to see the old Twisted Sister video for "We're Not Gonna Take It" the other day.
As I was watching I started to think:
These could be Muse lyrics!

Little Feat - Dixie Chicken
(Oct 27, 2009 - 11:31)
This is the album that introduced me to Little Feat.
And this song in particular really made me take notice.
Love it!

Neil Young - Long May You Run
(Oct 27, 2009 - 10:04)
One of my favourite Young songs!

So good

The Clash - The Magnificent Seven
(Oct 26, 2009 - 16:06)
Only a 7.5 rating???!!!

This song is pure awesomeness!

Pearl Jam - Yellow Ledbetter
(Oct 26, 2009 - 13:09)
Some people seem to have a bit of hate on for this song, simply because of the Hendrix association.
Bottom line is... this is a very cool song that gives me goosebumps when I hear it!

lyrics (though I don't guarantee accuracy):

Unsealed, on a porch a letter sat
Then you said I wanna leave it again
Once I saw her on a beach of weathered sand
And on the sand I wanna leave it again yeah
On a weekend I wanna wish it all away yeah
And they called and I said that I want what I said
Then I call out again
And the reason oughta leave her calm I know
I said I know what I wear not the boxer or the bag Ah yeah can you see them
Out on the porch yeah but they don't wave
I see them round the front way yeah
And I know and I know I don't want to stay Make me cry I see ooh I don't know why there's something else
I wanna go my own a-way
I said I don't I don't know whether I was the boxer or the bag Ah yeah can you see them
Out on the porch yeah but they don't wave
I see them round the front way yeah
And I know and I know I don't wanna stay at all

- Lyrics seem to vary from different sources... and even different performances by PJ.
There is some interesting info about the song on Wiki.

Agreed... Z is a terrific album.
That said, the first record I purchased from them was Okonokos (live album).
MMJ are so good live, and that album not only shows off their skill, but it gives a good selection of songs.
It includes the best from Z, as well as other work.

OK Computer may have been perfection.
But that's not to say they didn't produce some great music after that.
There are some wicked trax on Hail to the Thief.
And "In Rainbows" is an incredible album.
It battles OK as my favourite Radiohead record.
No matter how much I listen to Rainbows, I can't seem to get bored of it.

They continue put out fantastic music.
Even Thom Yorke's solo album was one of my favourite albums of that year.
I can listen to it over and over again.
What talent!

U2 - I Will Follow
(Oct 24, 2009 - 12:57)
Definitely one of my favourite U2 songs.
The Edge's guitar work in this so cool!

Johnny Cash - The Mercy Seat
(Oct 24, 2009 - 12:53)
The whole American series will be regarded as essential listening for decades to come.
Brilliant!

Henry Mancini & His Orchestra - The Pink Panther Theme
(Oct 24, 2009 - 12:22)
One of my favourite songs as a kid.
This brings back memories.

Queens of the Stone Age - Make It Wit Chu
(Oct 24, 2009 - 11:59)
This band is kinda strange to me.
I like a lot of the songs I hear,
But then there are some that drive me nuts!

This one is pretty cool though.

Interesting...
As a big fan of Beck and The Flaming Lips, I'm surprised I never noticed it before.
But you have a point... definitely some similarities there.

Still, both are great tunes in their own way.

Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - Nothin'
(Oct 24, 2009 - 10:17)
Surprisingly good album!

Talking Heads - Girlfriend Is Better
(Oct 23, 2009 - 14:51)
As someone who didn't spend much time listening to the Talking Heads (there's a joke in there somewhere), I like that RP seems to enjoy playing their music.  I've now become more familiar with them, and I think I will have to go invest in some albums.

Good stuff

Grateful Dead - U.S. Blues
(Oct 23, 2009 - 12:19)
Good times!

Bad sweater...

U2 - Bullet the Blue Sky
(Oct 23, 2009 - 10:11)
Great tune!
Back when they were awesome!

Television - 1880 Or So
(Oct 22, 2009 - 15:39)
Never heard this before...
But I'm very intrigued!
Gonna have to check out more from them.

Pink Floyd - Fearless
(Oct 22, 2009 - 14:36)
Freakin' love this song!
The fact I'm a soccer fan also helps in my love for this tune (though not necessarily a Liverpool supporter).
But I was a Pink Floyd fan first!

Beck - Soldier Jane
(Oct 22, 2009 - 14:21)
Very good song from a very good album.

I believe 100% that Beck is getting better with age.
His last few albums are his best work!

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Zero
(Oct 22, 2009 - 13:21)
I like what I'm hearing!

My Morning Jacket - The Way That He Sings (Live)
(Oct 21, 2009 - 19:34)
MMJ are great!
This song is awesome!
I think he is one of the best voices in rock today!

They kick ass live!

Vivaldi - The 4 Seasons: Summer
(Oct 21, 2009 - 19:22)
I love this!

And to think I only really got into it because of a youtube soccer video!

This is what made me take notice of this piece:

I was thinking that or the Dexter intro.

David Bowie - Station To Station
(Oct 21, 2009 - 08:14)
I really dig this!

I love that it's not a straight forward song... it's got variety and interest.

I don't listen to this album much... I'll have to put it on again.

Neil Young - Long May You Run
(Oct 20, 2009 - 13:49)
Love this song!

One of my Neil Young favourites!

Fleet Foxes - Your Protector
(Oct 20, 2009 - 11:02)
Good song.
Kinda reminds me of My Morning Jacket.

Muse - Resistance
(Oct 20, 2009 - 10:45)
I've quickly grown tired of these guys.
No doubt they have some musical talent.
But I find there ideas just sound too borrowed from better artists.
And there lyrics are ridiculous!
How many songs must they have that talk about "fighting the man", "resisting oppression" or some sort of intergalactic struggle?

Cheese!

It's ok.
The whole album is "ok".
But I know they can do better.
There are a couple of songs on the album I really like.
But they seem more like Vedder solo songs, like those from the Into the Wild soundtrack.
(Just Breathe, The End)

Muddy Waters - I Can't Be Satisfied
(Oct 19, 2009 - 15:23)
Always great to hear Muddy Waters!

I remember when I was in my early teens, and pretty much the only stuff I listened to was metal.
My father was a potter, and I remember his apprentice listening to some interesting music.
So I asked him to make some tapes for me.
The first handful of cassettes he gave me consisted of The Grateful Dead, The Band, John Lee Hooker, and Muddy Waters.
From my first listen, I was hooked on all of them.
I recall listening to that Muddy Waters over and over again as I rode the bus to school.
That stuff changed my life!

Let's ignore their recent albums for a moment.
This song is awesome!

Black Sabbath - Paranoid
(Oct 17, 2009 - 09:59)
wow
This caught me off guard.

Nice!

Bruce Springsteen - I'm Goin' Down
(Oct 17, 2009 - 09:45)
Cool.
Haven't heard this in a long time!

Bryan Ferry - Goin' Down
(Oct 17, 2009 - 09:43)
This isn't working.
Stick with the JJ Cale version!

Pink Floyd - Summer 68
(Oct 15, 2009 - 14:33)
OMG Yes!

I love RP!

This is one of many awesome Floyd tunes you never hear on FM radio!

Jerry Garcia & David Grisman - The Thrill is Gone
(Oct 15, 2009 - 10:09)
Nice!
The Garcia/Grisman album is one of favourites to relax with.
Though I haven't listened to this soundtrack... but this tune is on the G/G record they put out.

Turin Brakes - Other Side
(Oct 14, 2009 - 15:21)
First time hearing this song.

The music is ok, but the lyrics kinda suck.

This version should not have been recorded.

If I had never heard the original, I may have given this a 6.
But this will go down as a failed cover song.
- 3

The Flaming Lips - Vein of Stars
(Oct 13, 2009 - 23:32)
Very nice song.
AWWTM is probably my 4th or 5th favourite Lips album.
They have a great selection of cool albums.

But maybe it's not as bad as I thought... not great though.
It gets a 4 from me for the moment.

But, yes, the album art is nice.

Eddie Vedder - Society
(Oct 13, 2009 - 09:14)
Stellar song and album!

I hope Vedder does more projects like this.

My Morning Jacket - Golden

I love this earlier material.

Johnny Cash - Hurt
(Oct 12, 2009 - 09:52)
It still astonishes me that someone with such a long career could cap off his life and music with some of the best work in all his years.

Stunning rendition of this song... stunning album(s).

Bob Dylan - Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again
(Oct 12, 2009 - 08:42)
I realize that Dylan singing is not for everyone.
But I totally dig it.
It's that cracked-voice honesty that really brings it home for me.

This is a great song from an incredible album.

Orbison may have had the most impressive voice in popular music.
It's the kind of music that makes me want to sit back with my eyes closed and soak it all in.

Dire Straits - Ride Across The River
(Oct 11, 2009 - 12:05)
so nice!

Brothers in Arms will remain one of the best records ever (in my books at least).
Not one weak track on it.

It's funny though that, to me, Money For Nothing (as good as it is) seems out of place on this album.
The feeling I get from Ride Across The River is more in tune with the vibe I get from whole disc (aside from MFN).

Miles Davis - Concierto De Aranjuez
(Oct 11, 2009 - 11:04)
I don't listen to a lot of Miles Davis... or a lot of jazz for that matter.
But I quite enjoyed this.
I'm really into the more abstract sounds (perhaps I should spend more time with Miles playing on the stereo).
The new Flaming Lips album kinda feels like Miles Davis on acid with the distortion cranked up.
Time to explore...

Rolling Stones - Bitch
(Oct 11, 2009 - 09:16)
I need to listen to more Stones.
I didn't own too many of their albums over the years.
So I was only familiar with maybe half of their tunes.
This song has reminded my that I need to delve deeper into their catalogue.

Grateful Dead - Jack-A-Roe
(Oct 11, 2009 - 09:07)
I've loved this album for a lot of years.
Some better songs on it than this... but there is no bad track on it.

Emory Joseph - Brown Eyed Women
(Oct 11, 2009 - 08:53)
I've been a big fan of the Dead for a lot of years.
This is the first time I've heard this version of the Brown Eyed Women.
It's pretty good.... maybe not as good as Jerry, but I like it.

Moby - Pale Horses (w/ Amelia Zirin Brown)
(Oct 11, 2009 - 07:49)
hmmm... seems to be a lot of people who don't care much for this.

I like it... but I like most of the chilled out Moby stuff.
And for that reason, I like this album.

Neil Young - Like a Hurricane
(Oct 11, 2009 - 07:45)
NEIL!

Such a great song.
I love how raw and gritty this song is.
Not hard figure out why, as a Neil Young fan, I became such a huge fan of "grunge" back in the day.
It was a natural transition.

Neil Young - Throw Your Hatred Down
(Oct 10, 2009 - 21:18)
Big fan of this song.
It may not be Neil at his best... but even that is better than most.

Fela Kuti - Ako
(Oct 10, 2009 - 20:30)

Oh so cool!

true.

He is a rather bland musician.

My girlfriend says that anytime she sees that album cover she wants to punch JJ in the face.

I don't feel quite as strongly as her, but I will settle with giving this a 3.

Coldplay - Speed Of Sound
(Oct 09, 2009 - 17:15)
I enjoyed these guys when their first album came out.
The second was ok for a while.
Then, all downhill.

Their music just isn't interesting.

Neko Case - Buckets of Rain

What the????!!!!

I've never heard this before... It's awesome!

I am definitely gonna do some research on this guy.

Radiohead - There There
(Oct 09, 2009 - 11:26)
Man I love this song!

This album doesn't get enough attention...
there is some really terrific stuff on it.

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
(Oct 08, 2009 - 14:29)
Pink Floyd are one of my all time faves.
And I do think this song is great, but there are so many others I would rather hear from them.
I'm just so used to hearing this song come on the radio and thinking,"Oh of course they're playing this one".
But that's alright.
I've heard RP play some Floyd tunes that you never hear on local radio stations... so it all balances out.

Warren Zevon - Werewolves Of London
(Oct 08, 2009 - 13:24)
great fun!

Billie Holiday - Speak Low (Bent Remix)
(Oct 08, 2009 - 11:16)
Really good remix.
I'm a big fan of all the Verve Remixed series.
Even better when you buy the two-disc albums...
(one disc remixed and the other is the same songs in original version)

David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust
(Oct 08, 2009 - 11:07)
Rock God!

Bob Marley - Could You Be Loved
(Oct 08, 2009 - 10:55)
I have to dance whenever this song is played!

Perfect!

... now I go dance...
btw... this version sounds a little different from what I'm used to... hmmm...

Crazy World Of Arthur Brown - Fire
(Oct 08, 2009 - 10:42)
I didn't know this song until seeing Hot Fuzz (great film btw)

I get such a kick out of this tune!

Good fun.

Kind of makes me think of a groovier version of Alice Cooper (the band, not the solo artist)

The Killers - This Is Your Life
(Oct 08, 2009 - 10:28)
I really started growing tired of The Killers.
But this is the first time I've heard this song... it's a little different... not bad.

I can sorta see that.

The Cure - Just Like Heaven
(Oct 08, 2009 - 09:43)
Not my favourite Cure song... but awesome nonetheless

Dire Straits - Sultans Of Swing
(Oct 08, 2009 - 09:34)
I never get tired of hearing this song.
One of the best ever!

John Lee Hooker - Dimples
(Oct 08, 2009 - 09:27)
Hell yes!

Morcheeba - Public Displays Of Affection
(Oct 08, 2009 - 09:05)
Nice song... not sure if I have heard it before.
But most things I hear by Morcheeba have been very good.

Nick Drake - Hazey Jane
(Oct 08, 2009 - 07:38)
so good.

I always feel so chilled out and happy when I hear Nick Drake.

Cowboy Junkies - I Saw Your Shoes

I hope the similarity is intentional.
If so, I can understand, and perhaps see it as a bit of an homage.
If not... well then it's just not very well conceived.

Danger Mouse & Sparklehorse - Revenge (feat. Wayne Coyne)

NPR streams the whole album from their website.

I did some searching and came across the NPR site.
I guess I should have just scrolled down and saved some time! :)

I'm really curious about this album.

Danger Mouse & Sparklehorse - Revenge (feat. Wayne Coyne)
(Oct 07, 2009 - 20:21)
wow... this is great.

I'm a Wayne Coyne/Flaming Lips fan... and I dig what I've heard from Danger Mouse.

This is one heck of a collaboration.

I need to check out the rest of that project.

Beck - Orphans
(Oct 07, 2009 - 18:34)
As good as this song is, the album as a whole is even better.

Rolling Stones - Midnight Rambler
(Oct 07, 2009 - 18:20)
oh yeah!

Elvis Presley - Burning Love
(Oct 07, 2009 - 18:10)
This is great!

Elvis was the first musician I became a fan of when I was a very young child.

I haven't heard this song too often...  it's good fun.

John Lee Hooker - Boom Boom
(Oct 07, 2009 - 17:13)
Super cool

I'm so glad I got to see John Lee Hooker perform.

Such great music.

Collective Soul - Listen
(Oct 07, 2009 - 16:01)
not bad.

Though something about the guitar riff reminds me of Cherub Rock by Smashing Pumpkins.

Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond
(Oct 07, 2009 - 14:59)
Perfect

The Smashing Pumpkins - Disarm
(Oct 07, 2009 - 14:31)
This song, and the whole album actually, always seems to transport me back to '94.
Bridging the gap between high school and university.
I wasn't a huge Pumpkins fan, but I listened to that album a lot back then.
Hearing anything from it instantly casts a wave of nostalgia over me.

Love it!

David Bowie - Always Crashing in the Same Car
(Oct 07, 2009 - 13:40)
totally dig this song.

Bowie is a unique kind of awesomeness!

The New Pornographers - The Laws Have Changed
(Oct 07, 2009 - 13:23)
Really good tune.
One of Canada's better bands.

Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter
(Oct 07, 2009 - 12:56)
I think this could be the best song the Rolling Stones ever recorded.
And it's one of my favourite songs of all time!

Perfect 10

This is a very good song!! Is this really the name off their album: new-2009?

It's a new single that was offered for download.
Not from any album.

That said, it would have fit in nicely with their last album In Rainbows.
One of the best albums they have ever released!

Placebo - Never-Ending Why
(Oct 07, 2009 - 12:45)
Sounds a little too cheese for me.
It's ok, but I would be fine with never hearing it again.

Beck - Beautiful Way
(Oct 07, 2009 - 12:15)
Beck almost never does wrong.
Good tune.

Aretha Franklin - Think
(Oct 07, 2009 - 11:36)
One of my favourite tunes ever!

Pink Floyd - Pigs (Three Different Ones)
(Oct 07, 2009 - 09:02)
I freakin' love this song!

Pearl Jam - Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town
(Oct 07, 2009 - 08:27)
Yup... great song.

Pearl Jam - Off He Goes
(Oct 06, 2009 - 16:03)
Terrific song.

Vedder's voice works so well with these folk-type tunes.

Pink Floyd - Sheep
(Oct 06, 2009 - 14:58)
Man, do I ever love this album.
So good to hear this song.
One of my favourite Floyd tunes.

Moby - Signs Of Love
(Oct 06, 2009 - 14:23)
Such a good song!
The whole album is simply wicked.
This "chilled out" Moby is my favourite.
His upbeat techno stuff is decent, but I love zoning out to this stuff.

Mark Knopfler - So Far From The Clyde

OK, I'll be first.   This guy just doesn't really change.   Same tempo, same guitar notes.    This style was great for the first 10 years.  Now it is just repetitive to my ears!

I guess that's true.
But it's a pretty reliable sound.
At least he's sticking with a good thing.

Vieux Farka Touré - Dounia
(Oct 06, 2009 - 13:44)
Great song from a very good album.
I have many Ali Farka Toure albums,
so I was excited when Vieux came on the scene.

I was lucky enough to attend a very small, intimate concert by Vieux Farka Toure in Toronto.
He was even better live.  He really turned it up a notch... much more electric, and a bit funkier.

J.J. Cale - Chains of Love

truth.

There is so much from him that I love... but sometimes he seems to phone it in.

Radiohead - These Are My Twisted Words
(Oct 06, 2009 - 10:36)
These guys would really have to try hard in order to make bad music.

Another great song from a brilliant band.

Bruce Cockburn - Night Train
(Oct 06, 2009 - 10:07)
One of many great songs from Bruce.

Owl City - Fireflies

haha... yeah, I've seen some of those recently.
Perhaps if people make fun of it enough, it will finally go away.
Cher brought it to the masses way back when... it was catchy and slightly cool...
But it should have ended right there.

Most things can be interesting the first few times... but after the millionth time... not so much.

Owl City - Fireflies
(Oct 06, 2009 - 10:01)
Is that Auto-tune I hear?

Please... {#Silenced}

The Cure - Pictures of You
(Oct 06, 2009 - 09:51)
this song is simply terrific!

Talking Heads - What A Day That Was
(Oct 06, 2009 - 09:40)
I quite like this.
I never paid close attention to the Talking Heads, but whenever I hear them, I enjoy it.

Nick Drake - One Of These Things First
(Oct 06, 2009 - 09:14)
oh so good!

Pink Floyd - Free Four
(Oct 05, 2009 - 14:41)
OOoohhhh!!!!

Thank you!!!

It is so refreshing to hear a Floyd song like this.
Don't think I ever heard this on the radio in my life.
I've always been a fan of this album and this era.

My Morning Jacket - Gideon
(Oct 05, 2009 - 14:28)
Yes! YEs! yES!

Mudcrutch - Bootleg Flyer
(Oct 05, 2009 - 13:18)
I think this song is decent.
The album as a whole is pretty good.
If you like Petty, it's hard not to find some enjoyment from this record.
Not fantastic... but makes for enjoyable listening.

The Clash - Clampdown
(Oct 05, 2009 - 13:02)
London Calling is one of those rare records that could be considered perfect!

Great tune.

The Who - The Real Me
(Oct 05, 2009 - 12:58)
I'm so picky about what I like from The Who.
But this is on my list of Who awesomeness!

Beck - Jack-Ass
(Oct 05, 2009 - 12:49)
Great song!

The amazing thing about Beck... he actually gets better with every album.

His latest stuff is my favourite.

Nina Simone - My Baby Just Cares For Me
(Oct 05, 2009 - 12:34)
Remarkable musician... incredible song!

The Smashing Pumpkins - 1979
(Oct 05, 2009 - 12:25)
Man, do I ever love this song!
One of the best tunes by the Smashing Pumpkins.

Stevie Wonder - Living For The City
(Oct 05, 2009 - 11:46)
Can't say anything bad about this song.

Tinariwen - Cler Achel
(Oct 05, 2009 - 11:45)
I'm really digging this!

Such a cool sound.
Kinda makes me think of Ali Farka Touré (who's music is fantabulous!)

Muse - Uprising
(Oct 05, 2009 - 11:38)
I like Muse for the most part.
Seeing them live was fun.
I too got a Dr. Who vibe from this tune.

My only issue is that the more I hear Muse, the more I find them a little too camp.
But I haven't heard much from this album... I will give it a chance.

Pearl Jam - The Fixer
(Oct 05, 2009 - 11:13)
A decent song from a wicked band.
The album is quite good, with some tracks certainly better than others.
I miss some of the angst from their earlier work.
"The End" and "Just Breathe" are great songs off this album.

Radiohead - Reckoner
(Oct 05, 2009 - 11:10)
Such a great song from an awesome album!
Radiohead are one of the best bands today.

Beethoven - Moonlight Sonata

Not much can top a live Lips show!

My Morning Jacket - The Way that He Sings
(Oct 05, 2009 - 09:48)
MMJ are one of the best contemporary bands out there!
Outstanding song writers, and incredible live show!
I love this song!

Jim James is up there in my favourite singers list.
His rendition of Going to Acapulco in the Bob Dylan film I'm Not There was freakishly good!
