I sort of agree... But then this single lyric redeems it for me:

I learned as a child not to trust in my body
I've carried that burden through my life
But there's a day when we all have to be pried loose

Powerful!

I think this was the first song I ever heard from Mr. Bruce, and what a fine introduction. Thank you RP. 9

Close, but no cigar. It was about the Contras in Nicaragua, who were fight the Marxist government in power. (I thought fighting Marxists was a good thing.) And, lo and behold, when the people of Nicaragua were finally given a chance to vote in an honest and fair election in 1990, they threw Daniel Ortega and his other Stalin wannabes out on their ear ... courtesy of the Contras that the U.S. supported.

I saw Bruce at the Great New York State Fair about 10 years (right after Jerry died) with Bob Weir, Bob Wasserman and Michelle Shocked. Bruce really set the crowd up for the Bobs. He is an awesome stage presence.

Hey, Sean, I think "Rocket Launcher" is a rail against the U.S. supporting the Iran/Contra garbage.

This is a great song by Bruce. I haven't seen a Bruce show in about 3 years, and I am acin to see him live again. If you get the chance to see him, do it. Whether he's solo or with a band, he puts on a great show, although I must say I prefer seeing him with his backing band.

When I first got this CD, I listened to this song about a hundred times, over and over, just because of the whole ambiance of the song. Oh, and the words... Especially now, they hold a special significance. I wonder if the victims of Katrina might be asking themselves the same thing: "If this was the last night of the world, what would I do?"

It sets priorities in order in the most basic of ways - one of the things that I love about Cockburn's music.

After I finally got past "Last Night of the World," I gave myself a break and listened to "Isn't That What Friends Are For?" because of the sheer starkness of his images - there's even a reference to the bird next door doing his best rendition of squealing brakes.

Love Bruce Cockburn's music. My favorite song is still "Lovers In A Dangerous Time" which has been covered by the likes of Bare Naked Ladies and Dan Fogelberg (another of my favorites, from 'way back.)

This is a great album. I never give his guitar playing much thought but when I've seen him live I'm always really impressed with his ability.
