At Woodstock, the original opening guy was too freaked out to go on first in front of 400,000 +, so the promoters begged Richie Havens to go on FIRST.  He said no way, but eventually caved.  He said, ok, but just for a couple of songs.  He played for 90 minutes with 2 encores....  Great performer

Quite the opposite.Lots of plectrum, but his left hand always drags IMO and throws things out of conventional syncopation, that's why some folks don't get it.(unless he's lefthanded,in which case it would be his right)

At any rate, I like the guy, but he leans on the open tunings a little too much for me, but then again he has huge hands.

No matter what you think of the artist or of his rendition, Richie Havens brings back memories of 1969-era radio, when you could hear anything from James Brown to Led Zeppelin to, well, Richie Havens.
