This is about the most boring thing I've ever heard and I've been listening to music for over 40 years. I've heard bland religious campfire songs with more verve.

The two albums from this period, this one and American Beauty, are my favorites of theirs. Not a lemon on either one. Great tunes to suit just about any occasion.
Wore out a lot of vinyl on those 2 back in the 70's
The Grateful Dead songs dealt quite a bit with mortality, and Workingmans Dead album maybe more than any other. These are non-trivial songs that express a coherent and powerful world view, which is why there are so many "deadicated" Deadheads, and why the Dead have been relevant for nearly half a century. This is a timeless all-American album whose sound will never be dated, and certainly isn't more than 40 years after its release.
"Their walls are filled with cannonballs/Their motto is 'Don't tread on me...'" A mere four years after their first album and subsequent forays into extended psychedelia, this album was astonishing for its simplicity, beauty, and lack of hippie-dippie pretension. I was caretaking a student housing co-op, which was otherwise closed for the summer—uber creepy—when I first heard this on, I think, KSAN. Rushed out and got the album the same day—which wasn't difficult since the record store was on the next block—Euclid Avenue on Berkeley's north side; back then a tight little community and a lot of fun.

yeah, yeah they were a Jam band and not such great tunesmiths but this one and Friend of the Devil are damn good songwriting and this one especially brightens my mood!
Listening to this, it came to me that there's a lot of African influence in this piece. Not a Deadhead, but this piece is nice and brings back good memories.
I always loved this album though other tunes moreso than this one. But never mind hearing this one or them, in general. Those were some electric times...
