Surely you mean The Band's The Weight:
Take a load off Fanny, take a load for free;
Take a load off Fanny, And (and) (and) you can put the load right on me.
I think the Band had the jump on Van, but I also think these songs are from the same era.
(Just checked, The Weight was released in 1969, And It Stoned Me in 1970... but who knows when they were written? I know that, years later, Van appeared with the Band for the filming of The Last Waltz)

Funny how early Van is so much better than the late stuff....maybe the distinctive voice gets boring after a while?.....

Dislike the lyrics and his whiny voice . . . his otherwise musical genius notwithstanding.

its true that Van has had some miserable decades of corny, un-listenable junk. But this song, this whole album, in fact is so choice. It reminds me of hitchhiking across Ireland, too and i've never done it.

maybe playing it caused you to fall asleep at the wheel which resulted in the car wreck.
I love the song though, reaches a higher plain definitely. |

Good song but it sounds like he is trying so hard to make the lyrics fit the song, like there isn't room for emotion in there. The same sound (horns and all) comes through in the two longs songs on St Dominic's Preview, the title cut and Listen to the Lion, but Van has room to growl and groan and emote (in the good sense). Try those instead sometime.

Always reminds me of hitching my way through Ireland. Mystical indeed.

You are thinking of "The Weight" by the Band,...and its "Take a load off Annie,..." Anyway, both songs are classics! (pimp) |

Reminds me very much of Otis Redding. The horn arrangements especially.
Nice, moody and soulful. Imagine when a song like this is played when your sailing on a lake in sunny wheather, or something like that. Perfect.

This was one of the first songs I ever heard played on a Virgin Vinyl album and a killer sound system in a sereo/head shop. Still remember thinking this was an under rated tune then (probably what, 15 years ago) and I still think so today. |
